New Tokyo Marina Reviews
The food was great as was the service. We will be back
We ended up here by accident, and so glad we did. This is a family owned place and had excellent service! We ordered miso soup, had plenty of tofu! California roll, wonton soup which were both large portions and tasted delicious! Now, I truly loved my yellow tail sushi, super fresh and full of flavor. And ... spicy yellow tail roll and spider roll were just amazing! Everything was fresh and satisfying 😌 We were so glad we ended up here by accident! Our dinner couldn't have been any better! Sadly, our vacation ends tomorrow but will definitely bookmark it for our next visit
Delicious, fresh food and a warm, homey atmosphere! My family was looking for some noodles and soup to warm us up, and New Tokyo did not disappoint in the slightest. We ordered: • pork cutlet - it was big but cut nice and thin for ease of dipping into sauce • ramen with BBQ pork - a solid bowl of soup noodles that was just the right size • butter and corn ramen - personally as a corn fan, this hits the spot!! • katsudon - the sauce was so good, and the chicken was very tender. • tempura udon (Not pictured) - one of the best tempura I've had in a while. It wasn't too oily, and it was still light and fresh. Definitely a work of art ♡ • sashimi platter - each cut of seafood was fresh and delicious For those lovers of hole-in-the-wall mom-and-pop shops, New Tokyo is the epitome of that out here in the heart of Marina. P.S. wish I tried the chirashi 🥹
Everything was delicious! I swung by before heading back home, and eating here was honestly the highlight of my trip to Monterey! If I ever go back, it'll be to eat here.
The takeout sushi I just got was excellent. I just came back from Japan where I learned Japanese food is all about attention to detail even if the dishes seem simple and this sushi was better than a lot of sushi I had in japan. The fish, ginger, and other ingredients were so fresh and well prepared. Definitely worth the 21 dollars for 8 rolls of generous size. My only complaint is the can of coke was 2.50 which seems steep. But this is a high quality place overall. Ate my sushi in the nearby park and had a good time.
Food was, excellent. I never liked miso soup, but there's was perfect and so was their food...I had curry chicken with steamed rice and they serve you a little cabbage before the meal, oh, yea I also had me their tempura shrimp and veggies not sure what my friend had but bomb looking...must try!!!
First time last night....fast, super friendly, fair prices....we had an egg roll missing issue and they took care of it right away! And we saw a really good friend going there for his family too! Will do again for sure! Thank you New Tokyo!🍤
The ultimate Japanese comfort food, love their sushi & donburi rice bowls. The owner is so sweet too!
Awesome food! A little old facility but worth it for the price
I went a few days ago but because of covid there is still no indoor dining but when it opens up everyone needs to try this place out . Their teriyaki chicken is the best in town and their sushi really is simple but tasty just the way it should be !

Whenever we are in Marina, we always stop by for lunch or dinner. Usually Chirashi is my very favorite with all the wasabi I can have. Their ingredients are very fresh. There's a good selection of sushi, hand rolls and lunch box. Here we had tuna, spicy tuna, yellowtail, eel and shrimp tempura.
Sushi is very tasty and the price is very reasonable for a small family run restaurant service is always great
Seemed very fresh, the staff is very friendly and the service was excellent. Very reasonably priced as well. I will definitely eat here again
Thank you for satisfying my craving for “Midnight Diner: Tokyo stories”. The katsudon donburi was perfection. Wonderful humble joint.
Stunning food and not expensive My new sake and beer joint and funny owner
Ohhh!!! This is a great place to eat!!! I love the people and their food. Definitely will be back here if we visit the place again soon!!! Harigato!!! 🫶🏻
Beautiful little spot. Food is delicious and affordable. I real gem.
I’ve been coming here for 10 years and in that time the food has always been exceptional, delicious, and they provide such kind service. Truly a gem hidden and I will continue to support them as long as they are open! The bento boxes are highlights but the sushi is also very tasty!
Staff was friendly and attentive. Hand rolls were amazing! Fish was fresh and tasty. Udon was made with love.

A pleasant dining surprise... It's a no-frills plaza restaurant with very tasty sushi at a great price. Lots of roll, sashimi, and nigiri options to choose from plus other Japanese bento/meal options. The hosts/owners are very friendly and attentive. I'd definitely come back.

The food was delicious and well presented. However, the place feels rundown and somewhat disorganized. I noticed boxes of soda on the floor and that the carpet was a bit dirty. The dishes were being washed in plain view, and I wasn’t able to finish my tea because the rim of the cup appeared dirty. Hopefully, the owner will consider investing in new dishes and improving the overall upkeep.

Yikes. I usually only write reviews that are for good places, but for once, I was compelled to write this one for the opposite reason. I should've been skeptical when I noticed this was the only sushi place in the area, which may be why it received all these wonderful reviews. I've had bad sushi experiences before, but this was next level. The exterior of the restaurant should have indicated that this was not going to be a quality experience. And the interior was even worse. Chinese restaurant? This would've still been pretty bad for that standard, but for a Japanese place, unacceptable. Incredibly dingy and unwelcoming. Then came the food. The order was taken by what I assume to be the owner or co-owner. Perfectly pleasant lady, and after she took the order, she went behind the sushi counter to make it herself. Still ok by my book. Mom and pop restaurants are many times the best. We ordered a chirashi and a cold soba noodle. Chirashi is a bowl of seasoned sushi rice with various ingredients scattered on top, typically various slices of sashimi and perhaps some other things like vegetables or egg. No seaweed, typically. Well, I watched as she place a fairly large mound of sushi rice in a sushi boat, placed squares of seaweed directly on the mound of rice, placed the fish all around it, topped it with a piece of cooked eel...and then proceeded to pour vast amounts of unagi sauce (a dark, thick sweet sauce) over the WHOLE thing, eel and all. You can see the pools of it in the boat in the photo. I was curious at first, then mortified. Of course when I finally ate it, all I had was mouthfuls of sauce that had perfectly covered up and destroyed the taste of the raw fish. When I did manage to take bites of the fish without the sauce, the fish was decent. The sushi rice, not so much, but I realized I had just been introduced to a new dish: chirashi teriyaki. Never again. The soba noodles were decent, but the dipping broth was so salty, we had to dilute it with water. Not exactly traditional either. Service was fine, I can't knock that. But unless you are hankering for a memorable sushi experience (and not in a good way), I'd avoid!
