Grey Whale Bar and Cafe Mendocino Reviews
The food here is delicious. I had the Filet Mignon and it was so tender and juicy. The cinnamon ice cream with the apple beignets was so yummy 😋
Ordered the heirloom tomato caprese, fried chicken, and grilled Painted Hills steak—each dish was perfectly prepared and bursting with flavor. Every bite was a delight. Our server was warm, attentive, and made the experience even better. Highly recommend this spot for a memorable meal.
I had an Excellent dining experience here. The duck breast, filet mignon and cookie taco are amazingly good!
Salad with avocado toast was super fresh and delicious! Service was a little slow but great atmosphere. Went here again for dinner, great food again! The Manhattan Noir cocktail and the Grilled Peach Napoleon desert were amazing!
We had a very good dinner while staying here at the inn. For cocktails my wife had the Green Goddess (spin on a gimlet) and I had the Pandemic Sour (couldn't resist the name). We had the cheese plate appetizer, followed by a good beet salad. The mains were the duck confit and the pasta special (housemade fettuccini with trumpet mushrooms and chicken). All were very good. This was one of our top two meals during our stay in Mendocino. All the dining was outside under a covered tent, with heaters. (Heads up if you stay at the inn they aren't serving breakfast yet)
Celebrated an anniversary here and had great time here. Our waiter was very helpful and knowledgeable. Best dish we had was their scallops appetizer, delicious! Every course was perfectly heated to that just right temp, sounds small but makes a difference. Nice seating options, can see sunset. Also save room for dessert if you can, their ice cream was yummy.
Came in mid day needing to charge my Electric Vehicle. They have a Tesla Destination Charger, and is available for guests, but they don’t serve lunch. I asked if I could charge my car, they suggested if I made a reservation for dinner. Deal! Spent next few hours walking the cliffs and town with my dog, while racking up electrons into my electron tank. Bar opens at 5pm, dinner starts at 5:30. Staff is super friendly and this Inn is smack in the middle of town near coffee shops (but they all close near 4ish).
Someone in town recommended this place to us. We had noodles and fillet steak and they were so good. I like the ambience here with a beautiful architecture. Also, the staff were very friendly.
We had a wonderful breakfast there so decided to come back for dinner. Totally amazing!

Had a sensational meal here last night. Everything was on point from the appetizer with edible flower petals on the cheese trio plate to the cocktails that were nothing short of exquisite. I had the roasted acorn squash and could not have been more pleased with my meal. It was absolutely phenomenal. The staff were helpful and didn't rush us as we enjoyed our meal and conversation. If you're in the area stopping here for a meal is a must.
Great atmosphere, helpful staff, and the food was top tier. My wife got the ahi tuna and I got the filet mignon. The steak was cooked perfectly, very tender as you'd expect from a filet. Dessert was delicious. All in all, looking forward to returning.
Very home-y meals but with insane high quality ingredients. Freshest salad I had in a long time, and the duck was amazing. The service was top notch and the staff were so friendly to us.
The food is great! The terrace area is great for dogs, and they have heaters too.

We had breakfast here three days in a row. Everything was great but our favorite was the pancakes 😊 Our waitress for two of the days was LIZ, she was awesome
The House has a wonderful old ambience. A history lesson on the occupants adorns the breezeway as you step inside. Service was excellent. Food was exquisitely prepared, but some of the mains fell flat as there just wasn’t enough contrasts against oil rich portions of the plate. The pork chop I had was beautifully cooked however it could have really used a crisp green or something with acid to balance it out.
It's a charming place to visit in Mendocino. The food was good overall, though not perfect. The fish needed a bit more flavor, but we added the sauce from our oyster plate, which made it great. The duck was delicious, but the Brussels sprouts were too fried and dry. The salad was very good. Overall, it was a good experience.
My husband booked this place for dinner. It was a great atmosphere. It was busy, because they had a rehearsal dinner going on. We decided to do the prefix dinner with wine pairing. It was very goid, but very expensive. The most I think we ever paid for a dinner.😐 They had a problem with a black beetles, that would jump on you. That was the worst thing about the evening. Need to get the pest control out there. Should have complementary offered a discount, but I guess they didn't think it was issue.
Saffron Risotto was superb while the lamb was weirdly chewy and lukewarm when it arrived to our table. Good flavors, and ambience.
Came here for the five course meal with wine pairing. The food was excellent from ingredients to preparation and presentation. The wine (most local) paired very well and the overall progression of the courses was on point. I had the standard meal and my wife had the vegetarian. The wait staff was all very friendly and accommodating. We were sat quickly and spent about 3 hours there in total. The setup is clearly one of transition and necessity with the pandemic. There is a big tent on the front lawn with string lights and patio heaters. I think this is the only place where they fell short of my expectations. We didn't have any older members of our party but if we did I would be concerned about trip hazards with the uneven grass. My biggest gripe is the tables and chairs. Every table and chair rocked. I think they were aiming for a "shabby chic" but the result is more "highschool shop class". I would understand this under initial circumstances. But they have been hosting people outside for a while. If you're planning to be there for three hours, bring something with you to stick under the table legs. To take some Dramamine. Or both.
Food quality is exquisite. However portion size is at atomic level. I ended up eating half a loaf of their good bread after which I didn't even remember what my original $45 dish tasted or even looked like.
Outdoor dining is great with the view and greenery. Food was light and doesn't overwhelm your palate.
