La Saxon Maya Mérida Reviews
We had a wonderful time in this traditional restaurant. The service was beyond attentive and friendly and the atmosphere with the live music couldn't be any better. We were sitting next to the two ladies making tortillas which was quite a treat. Our food was delicious but our drinks were very disappointing. It felt like we had taken a trip to the past and we loved the atmosphere.
According to our Tourguide it's one of the most local restaurants in town. He really recommended it! The menu is in Spanish and Mayan but with lot of pictures so with some help from him we could order some delicious food there. I treated myself with a bunch of Panuchos. They were really tasty and the perfect mix. The staff was friendly and the location bit loud but not so we could talk in our group. I definitely recommend it!
If I had known about this place when I first arrived in Mérida, it would’ve easily become one of my top spots for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Their menu has a wider variety, and everything is traditional food from the region. I loved that it’s located inside an old colonial house, which makes the atmosphere even more enjoyable. It’s a great place to go with family or friends—it’s definitely not a crazy idea. The service is good, and the waiters are attentive to every detail. I’d absolutely come back to this place.
It was a beautiful space inside and the atmosphere was very nice with the live music and the two ladies making the tortillas! We started with a mocktail and a beer. We were given some tortilla chips and bean paste etc for the table. We ordered a seafood platter and their special pork platter. I asked for some spicy salsa which was yum! The pork was very well marinated and tasted delicious. The seafood was okay, nothing special. The fresh tortillas were a treat! Overall it was a good experience. It's a good place for traditional Yucatan cuisine!
Hit the place for lunch to grab food with my wife. Given the rating we trusted it to be good. The place is charming into a old house in the typical Merida’s vibe. On the positive side, it is charming as mentioning and the waiters are nice. On the improvement side, it is very busy hence the waiters are running everywhere and it can be tedious to get ahold of them. Food was good but lacking of taste in my opinion. I like when taste are more defined. Yet, do not worry. This is a solid first option for discovering Yucateca food.
We stopped in at the Chaya Maya casona and absolutely loved the courtyard seating area. The service was great, our waiter was friendly and efficient. I really enjoyed the sopa de maya, it was creamy with a subtle spinach-like flavour. We also ordered there which included cochinita, queso relleno, pipian de pavo and Pavo en relleno negro. We weren’t fans of the queso relleno and probably would have preferred just ordering the cochinita as that was our favourite, although the relleno negro was also quite tasty. I’d definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone visiting Merida!
The food was disappointing. We visited the restaurant on a recommendation from a friend that have visited the restaurant before.. This was the first restaurant we ate on our 6-days Mérida Trip and it was the least enjoyable place.. We tried multiple Salbutes and Panuchos from different restaurants around the city and found that La Chaya Maya was overpriced, offering small portions, we found the same food in the local market near the Catedral with better flavor, better portions and half of the price.
Overall pretty disappointing. The food was just okay, nothing memorable, and definitely overpriced for what you get. Service was slow. What really stood out (in a bad way) was being told after we’d already paid and were walking out that the tip wasn’t included — awkward and left a really bad last impression.
This is a really cute restaurant but unfortunately I was not pleased with my meal. It came out cold and I unfortunately had to send it back. When they brought it back out. They made it fresh in front of me which was very nice but unfortunately I did not like the taste of it either. The guest that I went with was very happy with his meal and I would say that the Ambiance and the service is outstanding.
Excellent service, Food is okay, sorry to let you know the typical and famous plate cochinita piblil is not cooked the traditional way, buried and cooked under ground. It makes such a big difference in flavor. I really like the home made tortillas and the cleanness of the place. Super sweet dessert in my opinion,Arroz con leche tastes more like condensed milk than the original dessert. (Small size dessert for a big price by the way)
Great atmosphere; the place looks very nice. That's pretty much all the compliments I can give. I ordered the 3 musketeers dish and it was the worst thing I could have expected. Perhaps it is my fault for not truly imagining the description, but I also imagine that any item on the menu should be at least mediocre. I believe that whoever came up with this dish never actually tried it or was abusing a substance of sorts. The dish looked quite good; it was three different "crepes" (as they call it) divided upon a large plate by a banana cream thingy in between each. Each "crepe" was the exact same thing, just with a different sauce on top- i couldn't tell you what they were. Finally, the dish is topped off with half of a cold hard boiled egg right in the middle. This dish was not food, but a challenge of wit. The banana cream dividing the sauces was cold, so the cold cream (pudding?) was in contact with the warm sauce. Each crepe had the exact same meat inside, and a lot of it at that. I couldn't taste a substantial difference between any, cause there was hardly any difference. Never minding the cold with the hot, but what sense does it make to put BANANA PUDDING between the sauces? that is a dessert. you are eating dessert with meat and sauce and tortilla. At least the pudding tasted fine on its own. I got tired of the same meat on my plate after 5 minutes. I haven't tried what my parents ordered, but they simply said it was "average" and "didn't like it." I do expect that some other menu items are more tolerable or even good, but the 3 musketeers dish is the radical contrary.
