The Islander Bar & Grill Miami Reviews
Stopped in for breakfast waiting for our flight and really enjoyed the service and food. Marlow our waiter was friendly and on point with the service.
I had the good fortune of eating at this fine establishment while I was waiting for a connecting flight home. The red snapper tacos far exceeded my expectations. They offer the fish fried, grilled, or blackened. I enjoy the blackened option with chips and spicy guacamole. If I could leave 10 stars I would definitely do so.
I enjoyed their signature appetizer and thr blaken mahi mahi tacos. Shrimo and Fish tasted good and not fishy. Waiter was super nice
Ordered the Breakfast Burger 🍔, it was greasy a little, lacked seasonings, but overall ok. Service was top notch, very courteous, yes a repeat visit surely.
This place was packed, but we could definitely understand why. Hubby and I ended up sitting at the bar, which was totally fine. The bartender was friendly and very attentive. Hubby had the Cuban Angus burger, and I had the lunch special fish tacos. The portion sizes were perfect! Hubby's burger was cooked perfectly to his liking.
Great place to grab a drink & meal at the airport! We had a few hours to kill before our flight & wanted to take our time - we didn't feel rushed at all. Our server was great. Highly recommend the bonfire shrimp & mahi-mahi reuben! You're paying for the convenience of airport dining, so the prices are steep.
Grilled Mahi sandwich and fries were done fresh and to perfection. Waitress Rebecca was a joy.
Made a food stop on the way back to New York. I was distracted by a phone call but the waiter was very polite and when i wasnt ready to order he made excellent suggestions. The food was hot, was more than enough, and very tasty.
With a long layover after an early morning flight, I made the choice to stop and grab some food. The breakfast sandwhich I had did not disappoint, nor the mimosa. Food and service was excellent. If you want to try some good authentic flan, made daily, here is the place to go. Worth the stop if in this terminal or if you have a long layover.
Marissa was amazing....read my mind could tell that I was irritated by having extremely horrible service at Express Spa
Airport food, but delicious burger and fish tacos. Steep in price of course, but a good option at MIA... One of the best.
The food was exceptionnally good. The place was a bit crowded but that was a good sign.
The food and drinks were great, but the staff's service left much to be desired. When we requested to sit outside, the hostess agreed. However, when we tried to move closer to the play area so we could watch our kids play, a staff member informed us that we couldn't sit in that section. There were plenty of available seating areas, but the staff member claimed that area was reserved for an event. Yet, we noticed other families comfortably seated there. We then asked if we could sit in a different area, and the staff member replied that only indoor seating was available. Eventually, one person allowed us to occupy a table that was far from the play area. However, during our seating, we observed other patrons being allowed to sit anywhere they wanted without any questions. It was quite strange. Despite the service issues, the outdoor area was beautiful.
Food was great and the price was decent to be in the airport. Didn’t take too long to get my food. Atmosphere was nice for a relatively smaller somewhat busy restaurant in an airport.
Beer was cold, service fast, and did was good what more could you ask for at a bar at the airport? Oh yeah, the server was friendly too!
Such a delightful quick stop between flights. Our waitress Rebecca was attentive and great. Our mahi grilled sandwiches was perfect.
Great spot for an airport venue. The staff are on top of it, the food is good and the booze is cold. Food comes out super quick here which is convenient as it’s at an airport and people have flights to catch. Highly recommended if you have a layover or just want a quick bite. Well done guys!
Food was great. I highly recommend the bonfire shrimp. The jack & coke was great as well. The service couldn't have been better.
Wow. I don’t usually expect much from airport restaurants but this place is on a higher level. Energetic and attentive staff and really good food.
It was really nice to found that is possible to have a bottle to have many mimosas that I want!! 🤭 and cheaper!!!! 😊
All amazing job well done. Dennis hilarious, Alex a sweetheart. Janee beautiful customer service personality. Patient and kind.
Ate here waiting for my flight back home. I tried the Fried Calamari which was actually cooked very good. It was seasoned really well. Also tried the fish sandwich that was made from Red Snapper. It was advertised as being blackened. Was hoping that it would actually be blackened and seasoned. Overall it was a good size for a sandwich. Ordered a Rumrunner and it didn't disappoint. Will definitely be back to try other menu items.
Had the char burger it was so good very delicious most definitely recommended if you want a good burger we added cheese and bacon it was perfection!! 🤤 Not a bad price either
Great food and service. The calamari was outstanding, fish tacos were also great as so the kale Cesar salad. I’ll highly recommend this place if you are in MIA. They do not have a kids menu, but our waiter accommodate us, and we were able to made some small variations for the kids. Great over all.
My flight was delayed. I arrived at my departure gate after 9 pm and wanted a healthy meal but no fast food. Ordered grill snapper. It was delicious. Very good atmosphere and a great place to relax and have a meal.
It is a quiet place to eat and drink, it has tables and a small bar to have a drink and order drinks, it is located inside the Miami International Airport, only if you are going to travel you can access and it is in terminal D, exactly in front of exit gate D49.
With a red eye from LAX, we needed to replenish our bodies before our haul to the Bahamas and stumbled upon the Islander Bar for breakfast. While the atmosphere was casual and welcoming, I was a bit disappointed that they don’t offer complimentary water—you have to purchase a bottle, which felt a little inconvenient. That said, I ordered the corned beef, and it was surprisingly hella good—tender, flavorful, and cooked just right. The portion size was generous, making for a satisfying start to our day. On our return flight, we had another stop in Miami and decided to grab a burger before heading home. The burger was well seasoned, juicy, and cooked to order, with a side of hot, crispy fries that hit the spot. I have to say, the service was good both times—friendly staff who made us feel welcomed and attended to our needs promptly. Overall, despite a few minor inconveniences, our experiences at both places were positive, and I’d definitely consider returning for the tasty food and friendly service.
Not bad, but tips included 18%, even you don’t want paying
I saw my daughter off at the airport, and we stopped at this place so she could have a quick lunch before her flight. This was a convenient spot near her gate. The service was quick and friendly. It's a small place, so it didn't take long to be served, which is a good thing if you are in a hurry. She ordered chicken wings and sweet potato fries with water. She said her food was pretty good. I tasted a wing and a couple of fries, and they were ok. Good for airport food. The place was clean and looked cared for. No complaints.
We were surprised with the service and quality of the food. Our server Rosa was friendly, helpful and also a good salesperson. They don't mention it up front but there are up charges for toppings such as jalapeno or avocado. They also include an 18% gratuity on the check (which for this level of service is fine). Both up charges and gratuity are noted on the receipt but if you are not paying attention, what then? All that being said the food was quite good for airport food. We had the shrimp appetizer, Red Snapper tacos and the homemade key lime pie. All delicious too! If I'm ever back by MIA at gate D49 I'll go there again. Urban Cowgill February 2024
I had seafood platter. I can only say the food is overcooked and also undercooked. Some pieces are good, some are not. If there are alternatives around I would like to try new ones. The sitting are too tight for an airport restaurant.
Food was some of the best we’ve had in an airport…service by Eduardo was fantastic! We had a bigger party and sat in the hall, but it was still fine. Not rushed at all, and accommodating for the kids.
I loved visiting this place as a kid, and coming back now, it feels very different. It seems to have been modernized, which gives it less of that nostalgic charm I once loved. Still, the food is definitely island-style.
The staff was accommodating for our large party and our server was very friendly. The food was on the better end for airport food though it still had airport pricing. Despite it being breakfast time we could still get lunch options. I had the Jerk Mahi Mahi with rice and plantains. It was filling. Bottled water and alcoholic beverages were available for purchase as well. It was a nice place to kill some time. I'd give it a 3.5 but rounded up to 4 becauae of the accomodations.
If you're looking for seafood while traveling in MIA, give Islander Bar and Grill a try. I had the blackened red snapper sandwich, which was good and well seasoned while my Husband had fried shrimp and mahi mahi. My Husband felt the shrimp was good, but the mahi mahi lacked seasoning and was bland. Overall, we both enjoyed the calamari as an appetizer and our server, who was amazing.
Delicious but very expensive.. when I saw the Bill, I couldn't believe it. Was my fault. I let myself be guided by the waiters recommendation, without looking at prices. Be careful
Fast and polite service, even during the breakfast rush. Place was probably at 90% capacity and food came out quickly
I had a layover in Miami and ate here. Overall, the service was great. The food was good. I think it was weird that the server offered water, which was actually bottled water. When I returned the bottle water and asked for tap, they said they didn't offer tap. The couple on the table next to me seemed to have two glasses of tap water. Otherwise, good experience and friendly staff.
Islander Bar and Grill is an oasis in the food desert of MIA airport. I had a short layover in Miami, and I was hungry. I scanned the menu and found a shrimp Creole & rice meal. The host told me it would be ready before my departure. My waiter, Vladimir spoke to me kindly took my order and asked if I wanted a Mojito. I refused saying that I had never had had one. He convinced me to try it because it was one of the local favorites. He asked if I like sweet wines I said yes. It was a perfect drink. It complimented my delicious Shrimp Creole and plantains. The meal would have been perfect if the rice was as good as the creole and plaintains. Overall, I was delighted with my meal at Islander Bar & Grill. Nice one! Keep Going!
A pesar de estar en un aeropuerto donde las comidas son más caras y no muy buenas, me pareció un buen sitio para desayunar
Had almost 2 hours to kill at the airport. Decided to get some more fresh seafood before we go. We were sat at a small 2 chair table in the back corner, perfect. Ordered a drink and a stater of coconut shrimp. It came out pretty fast. It was nothing special and even not very desirable honestly but it’s airport food. Ordered another drink a little bit later - our waitress made it pretty clear she wanted to keep turning tables. We would have ordered another dish and drink but she put the bill on the table so we decided to not. If we are here again, we will choose another spot in the airport. If you like what you see on the menu I posted worth giving it a try as the food does come quickly.
Staff was very friendly. Very nice. Food is severely under seasoned. They need to redo the photos they are using to advertise the food because it does make it unappealing.
Not a place for people with diet or religion food restrictions. No almond or oat or any vegan milk, not even a dairy free creamer. With eggs, they have only ham, NO turkey, o beef…just ham.
Well for starters they dont mention beforehand thay there is a 18% gratuity fee, even though I was sitting alone at the bar, I mean I have no problem leaving a tip but I dont like it being enforced on the bill. I asked for the churrasco, tiny strip of meat, overpriced, nice flavor . The rice was so hard.at the bottom I hurt my tooth when I took a bite , like it was stale or some sort. Overall overpiced restaurant even by airport standards, good service, good food, not great but good.
It was alright, had a black angus cuban burger and a double shot zacapa mojito which was also alright
Waiter wasn't that friendly but the food was good. No tea available but listed on the menu. Waiter was pressing for me to buy alcohol and it was 11am smh!!
Great flavors, but give yourself an extra hour. The food was genuinely impressive for the airport. However, the service was a major struggle. It took nearly 25 minutes just to be acknowledged after sitting down.
if the burgers at this place would be a horse you'd have to shoot it. multiple times overcooked, leaves the question : why even ask if i want it medium/ rare or taste like a piece of a car wheel. service was friendly though, french fries another disaster on the other hand. what do you expect from airport food... except for a $30/bill for a burger which not even a homeless would have taken
Food and service left a lot to be desired. Plenty of places to overspend at an airport. This one is not it.
Breakfast at MIA airport for an over-priced, underperforming omlet with sub-par ingredients. At least the coffee perked me up from a 3:15am wake time for a 6am flight. When I arrived, there was no host so I sat in one of about ten open tables. After being ignored for maybe 8-10 minutes, I enthusiastically waived over one of the hosts to ask for a menu. He was rude, spoke crudely and took another 5 minutes to bring me a menu. My server was friendly and more than attentive, something that is often lacking in an airport restaurant. Overall, this was a poor value, even for an airport.
Cramped space, bland & weak drinks, service so-so. While it wasn't the worst experience, I would actively push against going there again.
How they can call this a chicken salad sandwich is beyond me! There was an unidentifiable vegetable, somewhat potato textureed and there was more of it than anything else. When we asked our server what was in it she said potatos and APPLES. Avoid it . Our server was lovely. The music was good. Order a burger instead!
Cuban spring rolls are severely lacking. But ground pork doesn't taste the same as pulled pork. Calamari was decent. Eduardo, however, tried his best. Great service from Eduardo, not his fault the food is mediocre
Way overpriced for what you get, even for a international airport. 18% gratuity Suggested than automaticly Added to the bill. Other better choices available
The food was fine. But my issue is with the waiter/server. Not only did he OVERLY try to pressure me into drinking and ordering more food after I clearly said no multiple times, but bc I only spent $37 he blatantly ignored my table all together. I watched him check on the tables that spent more money numerous times. Then he had the audacity to circle the disclaimer on my receipt about tipping but also proceeded to make sure I knew he circled it as he read it off to me. I tipped him $5 out of kindness. I had over $500 on me but simply just wanted my husband to try flan for the first time and was wanting some shrimp myself. We just spent $100 at a custom burger place in the airport before that. Worst hospitality on earth. Will not return. I've had better service at a McDonald's.
This place is not great. Ordered breakfast combo with wheat toast. They brought out old, stale, un-toasted bread and soggy cold breakfast potatoes. Asked for a water, they cracked open an acqua panna without asking. It cost half as much as the breakfast. The plastic utensils rounded out my the morning. Place is garbage
Two breakfast sandwiches came out to $42 after 20% tip, no drinks. They served the home fries cold. The audacity to serve cold, leftover food after charging $35 for two small sandwiches and cold home fries. They did offer to give me some different fries, but I did not feel the need since they Intentionally served me cold fries.
It’s only an airport bar, to be clear. But I felt compelled to share the review as the service is so bad, I wanted to leave a reminder to myself to not return. Waited ten for a bartender to acknowledge me - had to yell for him twice, and was sitting on the stool, money in hand. It wasn’t a two-deep holiday bar scene, just a normal afternoon. The food is crap bar food, and again, keeping expectations low it’s not gonna get above three stars on its best day, but the service - how tough is it to simply be prompt?
No volvería.🤷♀️
While the food itself was good, I was very disappointed with the service I received. When placing my order, the server asked whether I would like additional items such as onions and peppers, presenting them as optional add-ons without mentioning that they would incur an extra charge. At no point was I informed that these items would result in a surcharge. After reviewing my bill, I noticed an additional $5 in charges. I spoke with a manager after closing out my check to address the issue. Although the conversation did not change the outcome, I felt it was important to express my disappointment. Transparency regarding additional costs is a basic expectation when dining out, and I have never experienced a situation where a server failed to disclose extra charges in advance. *Military discounts not offered*
I was at this restaurant on 9/4/25 and I ordered the Caribbean shrimp burger. The shrimp burger had a long black hair cooked inside of it. The bartender took it back to the kitchen and said they would remake it. Mind you, I had to wait a reasonable amount of time for them to remake my food. The manager never came over to address the hair being in my food, didn’t apologize or offer to comp my entree. By the end of my visit, I noticed my bill had voided the shrimp burger but it was added back on. I asked to speak to the manager Victor and asked him was he aware I had hair in my food. He said yes. I said as a customer who is suggested to pay 18% gratuity, I expect to receive good customer service and quality food. He told me he was not comping my meal and proceeded to say, “but you got your food”. This is not how someone in management handles a situation with a customer who received food with hair in it. Victor was not friendly, nor did he apologize for the incident. He should not be in restaurant management at all. The bartender Anne was wonderful. I’m just very sorry I couldn’t tip her as appropriate because her manager couldn’t provide decent customer service. I will not be dining here again
They took me back and seat me I was in my table for about 20 minutes and nobody came. that place is terrible
Food was ok but waiter determined his own tip and took from change.
Got horrible food poisoning from the hamburger, cooked well done. Hit me like a freight train about 4 hours after eating it and became violently ill from contaminated beef. This was the only food that I ate that day and I know it was the burger. I do not recommend this restaurant- we had an hour layover before we caught our flight and decided that this was a good restaurant that appeared clean and busy- we were wrong!! Eat here at your own risk
Hello, good afternoon, I am not used to complaining about a service but I consider that if you buy at a food station you can go to the facilities to wait for your food, even if it is take-out, and sit wherever you prefer, the girl who served me was rude, her name Elizabeth I went to the facility and they told me that my food was for takeout, it doesn't matter if it's takeout oh no, you can't be saying if you can, oh no, go to the facility, bad service from the girl, that doesn't speak well of their staff, take action. about that thank you
I had a drink and ordered my food and told the waiter I was going to the bathroom. I returned in 3 minutes. Waiter gave my seat away to more guest like I was nothing. I don’t want to say it was a racist move but the guy gave my seat away to 3 other guest of the opposite color. It was very unprofessional and disappointing. I want be eating here again and I still had to pay for my drink after the waiter gave my seat away.
We waited 35 mins before we got our food. The people that came in 20 mins after us got their food in 15 mins. I ordered wheat toast and over medium eggs, and got white toast and scrambled eggs. I couldn't send my food back because our plane was boarding in 10 mins. Our check came with 18% gratuity already applied and it gave us an option to deduct the gratuity fee. had a suspicious feeling that they were going to disregard our deduction. Sure enough when we looked at our bank statement they charged our balance with the 18% gratuity. These people are shady!
What an awful experience. Food is average which is ok for airport. Server was super nice and gave good service. But the music is loud and heavy metal. I ordered a side of water boarding. Apparently the owner insists on this - what an unfortunate business decision. The host gave me attitude about sitting at a four top. I get it, don’t want to reduce their capacity but they had MANY open tables about 50% that never filled. Also beware: they add an automatic 18% gratuity to credit card. Included an option to increase or decrease it. I added more, assuming (hoping) it all goes to the server.
My group visited on January 28th and ordered one beer and two cocktails. I asked not to leave the automatic 18% gratuity and left a $10 cash tip instead. My card was charged $75 for three drinks, meaning they gave themselves a very generous tip without my permission. Keep your receipt and stay vigilant.
Awful experience all around. They will upsell you on bad food and drinks with very little alcohol. Go elsewhere.
I never leave reviews. But we stopped here for a quick breakfast before flying back home. Our “home fries” were cold, bread had mold on it, they charge $4 for a tiny cup of coffee with no refills, and add your tip without telling you, which we didn’t realize until we left. Our server was nice but overall this was the worst food we have had on our entire trip.
I was shown to the bar to sit. I went to place my order and when I told him it was to go they wouldn't take my order and told me I'd have to go outside the restaurant to order with someone else so I left without ordering anything. I consider this very poor customer service and I cannot recommend this place.
I understand vegetarian options are limited in airports. I just wanted to order some French fries and a drink. I was told an appetizer HAS to be ordered in order to sit and eat anything else on the menu. Seeing as how none of the appetizers were vegetarian, and buying 2 side items wasn't an option either, I left. Forcing people to buy an unwanted appetizer is ridiculous.
The pictures do not match as far as the outside area. There was no windows or outside area. The service was quick and food was good. They will take the suggested tip without you telling them, we were told you have to tell them not to.
Extremely mediocre. Coconut shrimp was fried way too long and too hard. Fish has little flavor.
Rosa the manager on shift at 9:14 pm 3/16/24 was extremely rude and unprofessional. My husband and I sat at one of their outside tables. She asked us to move unless we ordered from the restaurant. I tried to order Cuban spring rolls so we could continue to sit there and she denied us service, and made us move anyway. I'm pretty sure this isn't how a business owner wants customers willing to pay to be treated. Our departing terminal was across from the restaurant and I saw another couple sit at the same table we had been at- it's not close enough to the restaurant to know it's their table. Rosa walked past them 3-4 times and said nothing. Welcome to Miami right!
As restaurant owners ourselves, we feel terrible for the owner of this place. To have Christy as a waitress is such a disservice to a restaurant that the owner probably had worked tirelessly to make their restaurant what it is today. Maybe the owners have put years of work into the menu - or a lifetime. Christy was rude and unpleasant. Her customer service skills require a lot of improvement, the way she refers to the customer and the tone of her voice is such that resembles the tone of an angry wife or just an unhappy human. I feel sorry both for christy and the restaurant owners. We came to drink and eat, but her service had such low and bad quality we decided took the food to go and didn’t order drinks. If I could give zero stars to Christy, I would. Also the food was… meh!
I'm giving this place one star because they make you pay for water. I was going to get food and a drink but I like to have a water with the meal as well as a drink. The fact that they feel the need to charge for water when they are already hitting you with airport prices is absolutely ridiculous. Skip this place there is a place not a far walk that has better mojitos and will give you water for free. One and only drink I had Here and will never return.
Beware, gratuity is snuck in the total, even for a single patron!! Fried seafood basket was average/fine, table service was average/fine, music was loud and obnoxious depending on your taste. Sneaking a gratuity onto total and then adding another line for the tip was dishonest. Manager was a jerk about it too. When I questioned him about he said to take it up with corporate.
The steak very expensive, but no flavor. Soda taste like water.
I had a very disappointing experience with our waitress, Alina. When I politely asked if gratuity was included in the bill, she responded with an attitude and actually raised her voice at me. There’s no reason for that kind of behavior in customer service. It completely ruined the dining experience. Management should seriously address this customers deserve to be treated with respect.
Be careful when paying your bill here. I didn’t realize that they had automatically added 18% gratuity to my bill. I dined by myself. I’ve seen restaurants automatically add gratuity to large parties but never like this ! I added another $12 tip to my bill so bartender received a hefty tip. I didn’t realize what had happened until I got home from my trip. Very deceptive practice if you ask me ! Won’t be dining here again on my way through Miami.
Bartender needs to learn manners and math. Sat at the bar with my wife who left to use the phone. I ordered 2 drinks, bartender instead of politely asking me if I could move down a seat, the bartender said "If your wife isn't drinking she cant sit here." That was rude, ignorant and dumb. As I was going to order more than the other couples sitting there. Anytime I pass through MIA I now know not to come here. Closed my tab and left.
Updating my review. Their receipts will charge you an automatic 18% even though it says tips not included. Instead of charging the card for the total, they charge the total plus 18% and then you have to adjust for them to refund. I adjusted my tip on my card since i wanted to tip cash and they didn’t adjust my credit card total. They charged the entire amount. And when i brought it to their attention no one can help me even though i intentionally kept my receipt. They Good place for a burger and quick drink.
While waiting on my flight, I came to grab a glass of wine, I understand we all have a free of speech, but getting into derogatory terms for a legally protected group is unacceptable. The staff in the bar were speaking very derogatory adjectives and making fun about people that do not allign with their beliefs, made me and other passengers just ask for the check and leave the place. Please understand that conversations of this kind should not be happening at work, specifically not while at work in an International Airport like Miami’s. To the manager – train and coach your staff properly, you work for an International Airport, where diversity and multiculturalism is 100% real. And in case you are all cuban and need translation because don’t speak english, here you all have/Y en caso que sean cubanos que necesitan traduccion porque no hablen ingles: Mientras esperaba mi vuelo, vine a tomar una copa de vino.
