Captain and Stoker Coffee Roasters Monterey Reviews
Great coffee shop with lots of seating. The toasts got over by the time we reached on Sunday 3pm, showing this is a local favorite too. It was pretty busy but still fun to hangout here. The steps looking out the cafe and the hanging cycles have it a funky feel. Both latte and cappuccino were good. Free street parking was available outside but given this place is busy might get hard to find parking.
My partner and I visited this open-to-air coffee shop after seeing it on Instagram reels. I ordered the avocado toast and an iced Captain’s blend, and they ordered the banana and peanut butter toast, and an iced vanilla latte. Our coffees were yummy and our toasts were very fresh. We had to wait a bit for seating, but people were filing in and out pretty quickly.
Only sad I missed the iced coffee on the menu. Looked so amazing. Otherwise really great stop. Oh man their orange roll was so good. They did not have any special drinks when we stopped - I usually like to try the new or best thing at a place… but everything was good and the service was really nice.
Been coming to this spot for years. A staple in Monterey County. I support the Monterey and PG location on a weekly basis. Haven’t been to the Sand City location yet but will go check it out when I’m around that area! Some damn good coffee
Captain + Stoker is a cool little coffee shop! The coffee is was great - rich and perfectly crafted. I love the fun decor, which seems to have been an old filling station or garage, because creates a unique and welcoming atmosphere. The only downside may be limited street parking, so plan extra time to find a spot. It's well worth the visit for quality coffee and great vibes. Highly recommend!
An incredibly delicious spot! I popped in for the first time and was so pleasantly surprised by the flavors of the matcha latte and avocado toast. Everything tasted so fresh and almost gourmet. The atmosphere here is warm and welcoming, with staff who smile, happily answer every question, and make you feel right at home. Orders come out super quickly too, which is such a treat. If I find myself in Monterey again, I’ll definitely swing by for another sip of something delightful. They also sell little bags of beans with creative blends—of course, I couldn’t resist and picked up one called The Captain. ❤️
A spacious, bright place with a great vibe and tasty coffee. Basically, everything you’d expect from a good specialty coffee shop is here. There are some interesting interior details — like a big wooden slab table. The baristas have a great workflow. The coffee is good, nothing extraordinary, just solid quality and well-made. Convenient location. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re in the area.
Coffee was amazing! Picked up a couple of pounds to go and loved it. The avocado sandwich didn’t disappoint either—same with the matcha. Loved the atmosphere; it’s kind of an open, airy hangar vibe. Lots of people, but even during rush hour we were able to get a table once our order was ready. Would be great if they had a few tables outside though!
Captain + Stoker is a must-visit in Monterey! The coffee is top-notch—smooth, rich, and expertly made. I especially loved the oat milk latte. The space is bright, welcoming, and bike-themed, with a cool, laid-back vibe. Staff are super friendly and clearly passionate about what they do. Their food options, like the avocado toast and vegan pastries, are fresh and flavorful. Great spot to hang out, work remotely, or just enjoy a sunny morning on the patio. Highly recommend for anyone who loves great coffee and good vibes!
Pretty good coffee and breakfast eats, I will be back. I got the Lavender latte which was really good and the avocado toast which was decent. A little pricey for the toast but I think it was worth it. The location was pretty good, plenty of seating options. Staff was nice and gave good recommendations.
We ordered their signature espresso that was served so beautifully, check the pics! They have vegan milks and dog treats! My friend enjoyed the almond croissant! Seems like a popular spot, gets busy with locals and bikers but my friend and I were able to get seats and have a conversation! Would love to see more plant-based options for treats/pastries
Pretty good overall. We had a Cafe Au Lait, The Valentines Latte special, and chocolate chip muffins. The muffins were delicious, the latte was really good, the cafe au lait was decent. The wait was pretty long, but the baristas were chill. Good location too, just a skip and a hop from the wharf.
Nice coffee and good atmosphere. Pastry was a bit expensive and tasted like Safeway or any other regular store pastry (fruit pastry 8$+). Brownie was good, but a bit small (4$+). Latte was tasty. I would return for coffee and for some other croissant. When we came around 1pm unfortunately only few pastries were left, but there were lots of big muffins.
Fantastic atmosphere relaxed casual a little a typical Monterey vibe but wonderful. Food and pastries excellent could not have asked for more. But watch out they will be quick to blame you when they forget to call your name for a drink. Question “is this my drink?” “we called your name and we could not find you” I’ve been standing two feet from the counter so no you did not. Don’t blame the customer even if it’s their fault rule number one. Would be one of the best coffee shops I’ve been to if it were not for that one ten second int
I tried the vanilla late, it was a little bitter and didn't taste like vanilla. the hot chocolate was good, The bread was average. They are very friendly. The atmosphere is calm, everyone is doing their own thing, and there is space to sit. It is a very busy place. But the baristas work very quickly to ensure that everything flows smoothly and the orders are delivered quickly.
Sunday morning, June 2025 The line was long, however, it moved at a good pace. Staff let us know about the wait time for drinks to come out, that the food would come first, which was nice since we had to leave soon and had a chance to eat. We ordered a hot flat white, a hot London fog, a cereal bowl (asked for milk on the side), and avocado toast. The music was loud.
We have been coming here for three years and we have loved everything about it. The coffee, the staff, the ambiance. But unfortunately, today was the last time we’ll be in. We make great coffee at home, so if it’s just good coffee we want, we make it ourselves. We come in here to enjoy a little coffee date with our dog, and we love that they have a canister of dog treats for her. Today when we went in, the manager came over and informed us that they don’t allow dogs and we’d have to leave. He was respectful and polite, but if they’re not dog friendly, why do they have a dog bowl and dog treats inside? At any rate, we won’t be back, since coming our dog isn’t welcome. I guess we’ll be going to Starbucks from now on, which is a bummer, because we really like supporting small businesses.
