Fish and Chips Cafe Monterey Reviews
Huge chunks of calamari but I was craving some on July 5th and ordered some! It was 10/10 but super heavy for my first meal of the day! I would go back and order it again or another item to try out!
We ordered fish and chips and clams chowder. The fish is very fresh and the chips are very flavorful. The clam chowders are very good as well. Very happy experience.
great fried calamari, highly recommended – and I know food because I have written cookbooks. The setting is very casual. Compliments to the chef.

We had the garlic fries and the clam chowder. Everything was delicious and the employees were friendly, courteous and seemed to be having fun. We loved the chowder. Highly recommend.

We stopped for a quick bite before our whale watching sightseeing tour. Tasty food, reasonably priced.
Visited in early October 2024 Had a late lunch here before taking whale watching tour. We had the fish and chips (if my memory serves me right, it was $8.5, which is quite okay considering the touristic nature), which was fresh albeit a bit too oily to our liking. Perhaps we expect too much for an eatery that is located right next to a fishery center. After back from the tour, we came back to grab a cup of clam chowder. That time around it was a hit - the savory, warm, and creamy chowder fit extremely well with the cold late autumn evening weather. A bit off topic, the poster in the eatery cracked us up - I can get small kids like kittens, but espresso (lol)?!
This place has the best prices in all of Fisherman’s wharf. The calamari, clam chowder bowl and the fish and chips are comparable to what you get in San Francisco! Great quality food! We wish they had more seating though.
Good food. Great prices, compared to some of the nearby places. The calamari and Fries were great, with a small bowl of clam chowder. The corn dogs were good too.
Long lines for this fry shop. Shared tables right outside and limited tables inside. Another diner said it’s been there for 75 years
I gave a lower rating for food, because I tried the fish and chips. My feedback for this food, is to please season your fish, as the fish had no favor inside. I fo hope to try your other food ítem next time. Thank you!

We love the Calamari!!
Got the calamari and it was good and decent portions of calamari, not as good as the crows nest in Santa Cruz but good.
I'm not sure why the ratings are so poor for this place. My husband and I have been coming here for years and it's always great. Love the calamari and fries. Simple, not overcooked, fresh and crispy. Love their cocktail sauce. My husband gets the clam chowder which is always thick and steamy in a yummy sourdough bread bowl. We've never been disappointed coming here. It's a nice quick lunch.

Buffallo calamari 👎. No way i was able to doctor it up so it tasted good. It didnt taste bad but it definitely didnt taste good. My batch the batter was undercooked and had a mushy consistency. The squid itself was a little tough and chewy. Took 20 minutes for me to get my order of just the calamari. I heard someone say the $3.25 (each) oysters were good. Ill try them next time.
Stood at the register for several minutes waiting to be acknowledged. The employees behind the register saw me, but carried on with their tasks. The calamari and chips were disappointing, with a pool of grease at the bottom of the plate. No flavor, just greasy. No thank you.
I had the calamari and it was sopping with oil and not served with any lemon or sauce. It just tasted like oil. The clam chowder was okay, but I wouldn't be surprised if it came from a can. And there are many cans of clam chowder that would be better than this place. Nice people, but I am sorry to say the food was mediocre at best.

We ordered fried calamari and shrimp but the food was shining in oil and when I got in the boat it was a disaster with this oily fish
Not fresh fish. Nasty frozen fries. No decent sitting area. 15 minutes for ketchup refill lol. Sad to see a business in such an amazing place do so bad and charge too much for their poor food and service.
Don’t get the fish and chips. Their fish is either frozen or days old. When it comes to determining whether the fish used in fish and chips is fresh or frozen, there are a few indicators you can look for: Texture and Appearance: Fresh fish typically has firm, translucent flesh with a shiny appearance. When you press the flesh, it should spring back and not leave an indentation. If the fish looks dull, discolored, mushy, or has ice crystals on its surface, it is likely frozen. Smell: Fresh fish should have a mild, clean ocean smell. If the fish smells strongly fishy or has a strong "off" odor, it may be an indication that it's not fresh. The fish was browning and the batter was overcooked. The fries were definitely refried for a second time. Save your money and go to Brophy’s tavern in Carmel for best quality.

Very disappointed with the fried calamari. At one time, I considered it to be one of the best places to get fried calamari. This cafe is associated with Abalonetti Bar & Grill next door. Sad to say it but the batter was undercooked and all the calamari was very chewy. I would say this was possibly an off day for the cooks but this has happened more than once. At these prices I would try somewhere else.
