Fong On New York Reviews
Starting with atmosphere and service - we were greeted by the nicest staff, so friendly and welcoming, an 11 out of 10! A few little tables inside and outside - we were able to relax, take our heavy coats off, and enjoy a meal. We tried all the sweet items - and loved them all. We each got a bowl of warm tofu with toppings. I went with two kinds of jelly, taro balls (chewy and delicious) and ginger sauce. Yum!!! We tried all the rice cakes - matcha, ginger, coconut and brown. Again, yum! My favorite was ginger but coconut was a very close second. Took home the grass jelly (with brown sugar syrup), would get again. Next time, we will get the savory items (the same warm tofu but with shrimp, hot sauce and other salty/savory toppings). We went out of our way to go to Fong On, and would do it again in a heartbeat. Don’t hesitate to make your way there, you won’t be sorry!!
The tofu here is epic. Don't sleep on the combos. The savoury tofu was our fav. We got it with everything and it was so delicious. The sweet tofu is fantastic as well and the toppings are a great idea. The taro ball and red bean are our fav. The coconut rice cake here is epic. The soybean drink is delicious too and the sweetened one is perfectly sweetened (not too sweet) We love this spot and it's popular for a reason.
Been here a few times, and it’s always wonderful. The first combo is perfectly filling and the brown sugar sauce not too sweet. Personally, I swap the red bean for something else because it has a bit of a drying aftertaste. Very limited outdoor seating and they package your food as if you’re taking it to go anyways. Also very limited standing room when busy. However, they are very fast, so you won’t be waiting long!
This is a speciality desert place with the focus on tofu pudding. The taste is so authentic and traditional but the presentation is modern and the menu is easy to navigate! I love a modern twist of an old traditional without compromising its integrity. A cold tofu pudding is the best summer treat!
Always the best homemade tofu, rice cakes, soy bean drinks and herbal tea. We've been coming to Fong On for years. Paul and his family are always so amazing, friendly and kind. And the staff, Stephanie, Gary and Danny are all so efficient, friendly, helpful and professional. We always have big orders when we are there. They're simply the best. Keep up the amazing work.
Food: 4.5 out of 5 Staff: 4.5 out of 5 Atmosphere: 4.5 out of 5 Value: 5 out of 5 Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 out of 5 Recommendations: Can’t Go Wrong Combo w/ almond sauce, Soy Milk Avoid: Rice Cakes I’m so glad my friend took me to Fong On because it’s such a treasure place. They are the master of tofu, and everything is so good (except the rice cakes). I got the Can’t Go Wrong Combo, and it was one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. The tofu pudding was warm, soft, and rich, while the toppings were sweet and cold. It was just perfect. The soy milk is also a must-get at Fong On. The only disappointment is the rice cakes because they are just very basic. This is a place of history (est. 1933), and I will DEFINITELY come back again for their amazing tofu pudding and soy milk!
This place is great for tofu pudding! It's a bit pricey, though, since they market it as "premium." There are other spots that are simple and cheaper.
Courteous staff and great service, really appreciated the cleanliness and the meticulous efforts they put into packing my to-go order. The vegan savory tofu pudding (small) was good, but I felt the need for some salt (wouldn't say no to some chili oil as well). Highly recommend! Also got the Snap-Crackle-Pop sweet tofu pudding (small) with one cup of ginger syrup. Tasted strange initially, but it grew on me in a few spoonfuls. Maybe another cup of syrup would make it better for me, but the shop closed before I realized that. Give it a try! Portions were quite satisfactory. Mix it well! 😄 Great experience overall.
TLDR: solid tofu fa and tofu product shop which many options I got a tofu fa with brown sugar syrup, a classic in Chinese cuisine. It came out to $7 after tax and tip which is a bit pricey but not too cray for NY. The tofu fa was pretty good, not too soft but not too thick. They also have a lot of other options like savory and other syrups like ginger and almond. Would come back to try different styles
Hong On’s tofu pudding lets you customize your toppings — kind of like an Asian dessert bar (think Meet Fresh style). You can add things like taro balls, red beans, coconut jelly, and more. I went with the plain tofu pudding topped with ginger syrup. 🌟 The tofu pudding itself was decent — smooth enough — and the ginger syrup added a nice kick of warmth and sweetness. They also sell white sugar cake in various flavors: original, brown sugar, matcha, ginger, and coconut. I tried a few: * * * * * ❌ Matcha — Way too sweet, not enjoyable. * * * * * ⭕️ Ginger — Not bad, but nothing special. It honestly just tasted like they used the same ginger syrup from the tofu pudding and mixed it in. * * * * * ✅ Coconut — The best of the bunch. Still on the sweet side, but the coconut aroma works really well with the texture of the sugar cake, making it sweet but not cloying. I also grabbed a bottle of their sweet soy milk. Drinking it right after the sugar cake made it taste bland, but after a little break, it suddenly felt super sweet! The soybean flavor is quite strong though — I’d give it a solid 4.0/5.0.
I actually really liked the savory tofu pudding. I just can’t get behind the $12 price tag for a cup of tofu and very simple toppings. It’s honestly delicious and satisfying and the perfect amount of toppings. But $12 for a cup of tofu just seems a bit crazy. It’s a very well decorated space with 2 tables inside and a space to stand and eat as well. There’s also benches outside. Cute merch. Card/credit or cash.
If you’re a tofu fan, Fong On is for you. Where else can you find tofu made fresh daily? Tofu blocks (soft or firm), soy milk (sweetened or unsweetened) and rice cakes are available. But the novel treat is the warm silky tofu with your choice of sweet or savory toppings ($8.50 plus tax). Your choice of syrup is served on the side so you can adjust the level of sweetness.
