Shopsin's New York Reviews
The food is unique with a large selection of Spinoffs On traditional Americana. I had the pete special sandwich with poached eggs And Chorizo. The waitress is kind attentive, the staff is Cool and the ambience is retro Americana craft. Highly recommend!
Love this place. The menu might not be as big, the place might not be the same, and Kenny has sadly passed. But the food is still great amd delicious, the menu is still a list of crazy named dishes, and the Shopsin family still runs a great place to eat. Just don't bring more than 3 others with you.
The host was super friendly! The waitress was the same gal I always see while I'm there. She's quiet and lovely. The food came out quickly and it was very good. I ordered a cheese and onion omelet with veggie sausage. I would definitely suggest giving this place a try.
Shopsins is awesome but maybe an acquired taste - first time the food might feel too large and gimmicky. Stay with it and explore the menu, get to know the guys. You'll see. Recommended: mac&cheese pancakes, anything with fried chicken or brisket, lemon ricotta pancakes. Scrambled eggs aren't fancy. Latkes are heavy. Post-pandemic: they still got it. Post-post-pandemic: yep.
Great food and amazing service. We tried a variety of dishes and they were all delicious. It’s a bit of a wait on weekends so be prepared to wait. We went on Sunday around 12pm and waited about 45mins for a table of 4. I would recommend going with 2 people only. But the servers were amazing and the all the food was worth the wait.
We had an absolutely awesome time at Shopsin’s this morning for breakfast. We had the chocolate chip pancake balls, the banana bread pudding French toast, and the mac and cheese chorizo pancake - everything was delicious. Definitely try the mac and cheese pancake if you go, and try out their homemade hot sauce with it. Also the staff was unbelievably kind and generous. They went out of their way to make sure we were having a good time. Thanks everyone at Shopsin’s! It’s a new go-to for us when we’re in the city!
We got ALL that is possible and landed that the Chubby cannot be slept on. Get it and be ready to DEVOUR it! Everything else we got was also fabulous that was just the stand out! There wasn’t a crazy line at 1pm on a Sunday so we were grateful considering that we were so excited to eat there! It’s a cozy spot so be prepared to snuggle up and enjoy the food!
Probably my favorite pancakes in all of nyc. Cute little spot tucked inside the Essex market. No reservations here - you have to stand in line to wait for a table. It’s my go to place for brunch in the winter since their line is indoors. Their menu is insanely long and literally everything is good. While you’re likely waiting in line to be seated you can browse (and be overwhelmed) by their extensive menu. Be prepared for a slower meal as the kitchen is seriously tiny - they bring your food out as it’s ready (one by one). Come with a smaller group to be seated faster, there’s only about 10 tables plus a few bar seats. It’s also not a full service spot. A server takes your order and brings your food, but you help yourself for water and coffee. It’s chill and laid back, just don’t try and bring your to-go iced lattes in here, they really don’t like that.
What a find! Tucked away in Essex Market is one of the best breakfasts in NYC! I went with 3 friends on a Friday morning and luckily there was an open table. Best OJ! Just get it. We had the Ova and the So Good (if you love cheese, this is for you), coconut rice, cinnamon, blueberry, and mac and cheese pancakes. So many fun options on the menu. Can't wait to go back.
You had me at Mac n cheese pancakes. New location but still family owned and operated Delicious spot for breakfast. The ebelskivers(pancake balls) are out of this world The Migos are some of the best outside of Texas. And then there’s the Mac n cheese pancakes. Pancake with Mac and cheese cooked in it. Add some homemade hot sauce and maple syrup - amazing
We came for the pancakes! And also got the poutine which was soo yummy. Ok, pancakes ranked (1 - best, 6 - hell no): #1. Cinnamon, 2. Butterscotch chip 3. Mac n cheese 4. White chocolate chip 5. Pecan 6. Dulce Leche Wished I tried more. But really, I came for the mac n cheese pancakes. They’re not super cheesy AT ALL. In fact it’s very subtle until you get to the middle of the pancakes. I can see myself snacking on one as a treat but probably won’t order it for a meal again. It’s worth trying though! And it does taste good. The raspberry iced tea wasn’t sweetened, which worked out in the end with all those pancakes! I’d you’re dining in, it’s a small space so you might need to a wait on line a little. The staff is super sweet.
This is a very special place, very new York attitude, and although the enigmatic owner just passed away, this place still has all its weird charm, with the son now taking over, grumpy but with love. And enormous amount of dishes, of which you and your max party of 4 should not order the same thing reuse. Take pictures of the food, but not of the place! I recommend the mac-n-cheese pancake with maple bacon, with a selection of great hot sauces and enough maple syrup to drown everything in it.
So much choice overload here! There are a ton of unique menu items like mac and cheese pancake sliders with fried duck. They have a great selection of hot sauce that are nicely labeled so you know what you're trying. I took a star off because our server was a bit rude and impatient. My girlfriend asked for a recommendation for something with beef hash because she couldn't find it on the menu, and our server dismissed saying he doesn't give recommendations.
i would like to review this place, but they have a literally illogical policy of not only refusing to seat parties of more than 4 (understandable enough) but then refusing to allow a party of 5 to sit as 2 and 3 - we even volunteered to sit on opposite sides of the empty restaurant so we wouldn’t socialize or order together (or do whatever it is they are so desperate to prevent with the policy), but we were pointed to a page-length poem that “explains” the policy. obviously it doesn’t explain the policy. it seems like the point of the whole exercise is for the staff to deliberately be mean to people who aren’t already “in the know” of the restaurant and rule, which is really dope of them! in response, i too would like to write a poem: “shopsins, a place i heard was good to eat arrived 15 minutes early, wasn’t that sweet? once they opened, they said no to five how bout 2 and 3, we asked, but still, they deprive no problem, we said, heading to the car we’ll go on google maps, and leave them 1 star”
Strange experience. Maybe racism. We lined up and was told to wait (no reservations), 1 old white lady is seated without her whole party and then another group of 4 white middle aged people was sat before me. I asked why I was the only person being asked to wait - they said my party isn't all here yet (2 including me) even though there's tables at the bar etc. Once they sit us down and we're about the order, they suddenly are asking us to move from the bar because there's a party of 3 who aren't all here but need our spot at the bar (they just told us they can't seat anyone unless the full party is there). When we declined to be moved the chef yelled out from the kitchen "HEY IF YOURE IN A RUSH THEN DONT EAT HERE, WERE REALLY BUSY TODAY" All we did was line up and try to order breakfast and they skipped a whole bunch of people ahead of us and then made up a reason why we weren't being served and then promptly asked to move for the same reason we were just told we couldn't be seated. We can only interpret this as certain people are not welcome here and decided to leave.
