Empanadas del carmen Oaxaca Reviews
Delicious and worth the wait. Like most people I saw Tacos/Empanadas de Carmen featured on Netflix and had to try. I was conveniently in the neighbourhood just as it was opening. I tried the Empanada DeAmarillo which is the most typical and it was delicious and then a memela de chorizo which I enjoyed too. I also had an agua de guayaba which was delicious! Tacos de Carmen is right next to the Empanada stand but one opens in the day and the other at night.
Found this trying to find tacos del Carmen. Later in the evening it becomes empanadas del Carmen. I got the squash blossom one and it was so delicious - recommend getting it with both salsas and their agua of the day (the hibiscus one was incredible). You can tell they use great ingredients because it was the nicest cheese I’d had in all of my time in Mexico. It’s also just a fun vibe at the stall and the staff are super kind and friendly.
Found this by accident whilst exploring Oaxaca city :). The ladies working are so friendly and work hard to give us the yummiest food! My favourite was the Quesadilla De Flor De Calabaza, simple yet delicious! In Sundays they have a more extensive menu. There isn’t a lot of seating so we went around the corner & sat on a bench, easy! It’s nice to get an easy street meal that’s also delicious and affordable😍. The Memelas were great too. They also have fresh agua frescas, the guava was yummy.
Came here to try the empanadas with mole amarillo, but the quesadillas with flor de calabaza, champiñones and salsa verde were the real highlight. We opted for a combo of flor de calabaza and the champiñones which is more expensive than choosing a single ingredient, but it was filling and I highly recommend it. Ordered another one immediately after!
Ever had a perfect Shanghai Soup Dumpling? The wrapper is strong enough to be held up by chopsticks to your mouth, but thin enough to burst open with no resistance from a tiny bite. That's what the tortillas are like here: they're perfect. Whether you get the quesadillas or memelas, you're guaranteed the juiciest fillings on top of or inside the thinnest, freshest tortillas. Pre-made tortillas do not exist at this stand. They make them when you order and the tortillas + toppings are evenly cooked on the stone slab. There's just something very singular and pure about the whole experience of eating something on the street that's been made right in front of you. Tacos, memelas, and quesadillas, I believe, are meant to be eaten like this. I've had all the flavors of quesadilla and memelas, but ironically not the empanadas. That said, if you're omnivorous and not actually picky about your food: there's no wrong answers here. You literally can't miss and land on a 'bad' item unless you particularly don't like a certain ingredient (then that's obviously your problem and not theirs). Just be careful not to order too many at once. Each menu item is made in snack sized portions and is meant to be enjoyed hot and fresh, like a proper espresso shot.
The food is amazing! The price is pretty cheap! I strongly recommend Empanada de Amarillo (mole amarillo)! However, the service and communication are bad. We ordered and waited more than 10 minutes. They served new customers before us. I asked them politely what happened. Then, they served us within less than 1 minute. However, we only received half of what we ordered. I thought they were making the other half while we were eating... then, I went to ask again... and they said they don't have what I ordered anymore... Why did they not informed us at the beginning? Anyway, for the taste and price, I still recommend it. However, be sure to follow-up constantly just in case...
I asked for extra cheese on ours and oh boy did they put extra …. So delicious. We had the chicken with yellow mole and that Mexican pepper leaf 🍃”hierba Santa”, mushroom and squash flower quesadillas. The side salsas are spicy. Just careful with how much money you give them because they will try to keep extra $$.
