We had visited Montpelier on a Monday planning to go out to lunch afterwards. I searched Google and found this restaurant not too far away. We love to eat at small local places this restaurant did not disappoint us. Wow! Amazing food. We saw food being brought to a neighboring table, it looked delicious. My sister and I both ordered the fried chicken (white meat) with corn pudding, I had the collard greens she had green beans. My husband ordered chicken and waffles. Our food arrived steaming hot…the coating was so good and crisp that it shattered when I bit it. Holy Moly, delicious! The meat was moist, hot and flavorful. The collards were good and the corn pudding was almost like dessert. The waffle was very good; no mix involved, the same crispy coating on the chicken tenders. We were recognized as not being regulars by our server who let one of the owners know. She came over and introduced herself and asked how we liked the food. Then a man came from the back and introduced himself as a partner, again thanking us for coming. We told him how good the food was and he said it was the food he grew up with…we said you could taste the love. If you are in the area try this spot, it’s a simple casual storefront, nothing fancy, just good home cooking. We are planning another trip!
A Ten Out Of Ten! The Food was really good! Can’t remember the young ladies name that waited on us but she was so sweet and accommodating! I got the pork chops with gravy Mac and cheese corn pudding! My husband got chicken livers with onions, cream potatoes collards greens! Ice tea. Looking forward to coming back!
First time dining and will definitely be back! Great food and friendly staff! We had the catfish, wing dings and boy was the coleslaw amazing! If you haven’t tried them, you should!
I cannot belive how good this place is ! The food was so scrumptious ! The fish and chicken was so moist, the mac and cheese was delectible and my oh my the potatos was yummy ! Please when anyone gets a chance give this place the love it deserves !
Fast service from pre-order to cooked food.. very friendly, polite and attentive hostess/Co-owner.. The Chef/Co-owner came out to greet and to thank us for dining at their restaurant..Very clean, fresh smelling restaurant with soft R&B playing from overhead speakers.. Menu prices are very reasonable.. First time visiting but I will return when shopping in Orange, VA..
I've been 2xs and Both times they sponsored a car show so wasn't the full menu but food was gr8. 1st time I got catfish/ mac & cheese/ potato salad and this past Saturday I got a footlong slaw dog w/ fries. Gr8 atmosphere and good service.
The food was great first time my family and I went there and we will return service was excellent 👍👍👍👍👍.
It's a great place to eat, everyone is friendly and accommodating. Good food and reasonable prices.
Great food and excellent service. The best yams I have ever had! We will be back soon.

Would definitely visit this gem again when we're in the area. The fried tilapia and catfish were done to perfection
Food and service is great . The catfish dinner is on point. The best I've ever had.
Food is excellent! It's real down home country cooking. 😋
Great home cooking! Great service. Ella Lewis' Deep Dish Apple Pie is worth it.
First time here, it was great, food excellent, this is my now go to place, never knew it was here and I am only 3 mins.from it
Outstanding food and service, always a pleasure to eat here.. love the small town atmosphere
The sweet potato pie and turtle cheesecake can't be beat. Kind people, delicious food. We'll be back!
First time at Coopers food was excellent! Will definitely go back
Food was fantastic. I would definitely recommend stopping if you get a chance.
Great food, nice ppl!
Great home cooking! We had the fish and 2 sides. The Collard greens are like Grandma's! And the corn pudding was wonderful.
My daughter, myself and Granddaughter went here and it was definitely some of the best food we have eaten the waitress was extremely nice and it was just a good experience.
Passing through and had excellent meal in down home style restaurant.
I ordered a 50 piece wing ding platter for the Super Bowl. The platter was ready when we requested it. These were some of the biggest wing dings I've ever received from a restaurant. I will definitely be back for more!!
Food was great. Service was ok. She smiles and was nice (but could of done more than sit on her butt.) The only real complaint was the music was too loud. I enjoyed the music. Just too loud.
Went today pork chops and gravy was delicious a friend took me both me and her food everything was fresh great customer service I definitely will be back 🤗🤗🤗🤗
I really enjoy the food here. At times I have gotten food that took me back to my childhood tasting. Food like my mother use to prepare. If you want "real soul food", this is the place.
Great food. Wonderful staff.
Excellent down home cooking. I had not had a meal as good since my mom and grandma cooked. Highly recommend the catfish and collards.
This Restaurant makes you feel like Family...Awesome Food & Atmosphere...I came down from Fredericksburg...well worth the Drive ...My New Place To Eat Out Of Town....Denise Thompson see you & Your Magnificent Staff soon🍽🧋

This place is nothing short of amazing!!! I have gotten several to go orders and everything has been great!!! If you happen to have a sweet tooth the desserts are amazing!!!!
Best meal I ever had in a restaurant. Outstanding cooking. Will definitely be going back on a regular basis.
Very friendly staff. Food is wonderful. You won't be disappointed with anything you order. We love it. Eat here all the time
The food was terrific! Great prices, great portions, and a very friendly atmosphere! This is a new "Go-to" place for us!!
My first time there and that's what I called a hone cooked meal
Our second visit in a month. Whenever we come to Orange County, we stop by and it is always excellent.
Ummm ummm good great food great customer service we travel here from Myrtle Beach South Carolina for our grandmother Mrs.Mabel Easton home going and we found this awesome soul food restaurant a must Go you won't be disappointed 👍🏾😊
Yes very good sample food. Try Corn pudding. You won't be disappointed. But everything is excellent.
The food was awesome!! The amount of food you get is worth the price. I will recommend friends and family to this restaurant. Great place!!
The food is delicious, the restaurant is very clean and the people there are very nice. We will definitely be eating there again.
Highly recommended!! I had the fried fish, collards, mac&chz, coleslaw and a roll. Amazing is an understatement.
Best fried chicken in Orange! It is always a pleasure to support this family restaurant while also eating well.
The food is fabulous !!!! Love the chili and cornbread… Try it out….Taste like home cooked meals. The deserts are great…..
Great southern cooking food cooked from the heart. Friendly staff, Clean space. Also fast service! Very welcoming to everyone!
The Pork Chops are OUT OF SIGHT!!!, with or without gravy.
Great Southern Food 👌
It was excellent, I took my wife for her birthday and before we left she stated she wants to come back again.
The best fried chicken we've ever had . And, the homemade cheesecake is the bomb!!!
The food here is scrumptious, esp the fried catfish, corn pudding, coleslaw, and mac and cheese. The fries were a bit dry; not up to the quality of the other menu items we tried. We did, however, order an extra catfish meal with m&c to take home; it was that good. Our waitress was wonderful; a beacon of light in the ever-darkening world we seem to be living in.
Great food with a wide variety of food on menu. Wonderful hospitality and service from staff.
The food is always amazing whether it’s breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. Denise and her crew always make sure we’re satisfied and full before leaving. She even has karaoke there from time to time.(another great way to bring out the community) She’s also catered my grandmas birthday party with over 200 people there. It was nothing short of amazing. Thank you Denise for everything you’ve done and still doing for our community ❤️
The food was amazing, I had the country fried steak, my wife had the country fried chicken and both were phenomenal! The corn pudding, mashed potatoes and green beans were all great as well, 5 star food!
Some of the best fried chicken I have ever had. Service was good and the staff is friendly. Prices are very fair and portions are perfect! Loved this place!
Great food and awesome people that work here! We absolutely loved the environment and the ice cream made everything 1000% better (I got the brownie sundae and it was to die for)! We'll definitely be back with everyone some day! PS they have the best french fries I've ever had in a long time! Best hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Orange!
Place is amazing. Definitely some of that fine home cooking you can only get in the south. Nothing on the menu disappoints, the sides are worth making a meal out of, and some of them are even dessert worthy. Soul food at its finest with amazing wait staff that'll make you feel like part of the family. Prices and portions are also great. Almost always end up taking something home.
Cooper’s has become one of our family’s favorite soul food restaurants, without a doubt. The food is always spot on, exactly what I’m looking for. The service is great, especially the server Jamie! He always ensures that the customer is satisfied, from the moment they walk through the door! Monday night Karaoke is a whole lot of fun and great vibes!
A little hard to find but worth the effort. Country fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy was cooked just right. They were out of greens, but who doesn't have supply issues these days? Pintos more than made up for it. Of course I had to sample my wife's order of fried fish, green beans and corn pudding. All were excellent and the last was ALMOST as good as my Grandma's recipe! Food was served piping hot and every bit as good as Mel's in Cville. Staff was welcoming and helpful. Will go again.
Went to their new location by pizza hut, Great atmosphere, great food and great service. Their fried chicken is the best in Orange and best burger! Everything was fresh and the flavor of the chicken was on point! Family friendly to the point you feel like family, thank you so much!
Always Great Service & Food. Picked up dinner since I had a long day in Charlottesville. Tonight we had pork chops 😋 chicken livers 😋😋first time getting these and they are DELICIOUS and I got liver and onions😋 DELICIOUS also. Sides are yams, mashed potatoes, collards and Mac & cheese. As I've said before I would be in trouble if I lived in town. Thankful for a restaurant like COOPERS!!!
I stopped by Cooper's on my way to Charlottesvilles. My sister makes frequent social media postings, so I just had to make a stop. The service and food were absolutely delicious! I got a BLT with fries and it was an adequate serving.
The fried chicken, collards, and Mac and cheese are the best in the County if not all of central Virginia! Go support this amazing, local business and its people!
We went to their free Christmas morning breakfast! Excellent in every way! Thank you so very much for doing that. We'll see you again soon! Bob and Sandi
Wonderful, hearty food! Great after a hike in the mountains of Shenandoah! For some reason, the window blinds are drawn down, but otherwise it's a nice place. Seems like a place locals enjoy, and with good reason!
My family and I shared an amazing dining experience! The service was great and the food was top tier. If you're around Orange County Virginia and you want some real soul food, this is the ONLY spot to go.
I love this place for lunch. I come in every Friday for the catfish. It's not a fancy place, but the staff is attentive and friendly. 2 thumbs up!
Delish! My husband said this is the best sausage egg and cheese he’s had in a long time, and my eggs and bacon were perfectly cooked! We did takeout and everything was still warm when we sat down to eat.
This was my first time here but everything was outstanding. The overall atmosphere was an at home feeling. I definitely recommend this place to eat You can't go wrong.
The best fried chicken and corn pudding for miles around! Not to mention excellent tea!! Definitely a go to spot if you want good southern food in a nice atmosphere!
The food had a mom's touch and an authentic southern flavor. The chicken salad sandwich was very tasty and delicious.
I had Coopers cater my Thanksgiving meal this year..I had the most delicious Ham I have ever sat down with..The green beans and collards brought back memories of my grandparents cooking on a wood stove..I've can not remember having better sweet potatoes..And then there was the corn pudding..I ordered 2 large pans that knowing family members would want to take some home..After the family ate there was plenty of everything to take to their homes.. The conversation continued on the phone over a week after Thanksgiving about how Great the meal was..The butcher whom prepared the ham for cooking knew how to impress..After removing ham off bone the bone was the right size for the pot of white beans to come.. I had just been introduced to Cooper's one meal prior to placing the Thanksgiving order.. I picked up meal the day before Thanksgiving.. Everything was properly double wrap and made the hour long ride home without losing a drop.. My family and guest still talk about Cooper's Catering our meal.. I would like to thank all involved at Cooper's Cooking and Catering for creating memories at our dinner table..It was a Joy ! Wish Y'all Happy Holidays
We had the BEST experience with Coopers when deciding on a caterer for our 50th High School reunion in September. From the first contact with Denise, right down to the set up, service and FABULOUS food. They kept in close contact and were by far the best price. We are still getting positive comments on the quality of the food. They even decorated a cake for part of the desserts offered. THANK YOU, Coopers!! If you are in need, this is the place to contact!!
Husband had liver and onions, collards and corn pudding .I had hamburger steak cream potatoes and pintos . Food was DELICIOUS customer service was wonderful. I definitely recommend
Having been employed within Orange County for eleven years, I have yet to encounter a culinary experience that surpasses this establishment. Following a recommendation from a women's business meeting, I decided to sample the steak and cheese for lunch. The quality of the steak and cheese was exceptional, and I was highly impressed. I anticipate exploring additional menu offerings in the near future.
World famous fried chicken for good reason. The greens and corn pudding were also phenomenal. And of course the cobbler is a must.
Had to go to Orange, Virginia to get a replacement tire for my Kubota tractor (story for another day). I asked owner of Orange Tire Service for a recommendation for lunch and without hesitation he recommended Coopers, about a mile down the road. Walked into a time capsule: family owned, dated but quaint decor, and a delicious smell wafting through the air. My wife and I perused the simple menu, and she opted for the tuna sub with a side of onion rings; I chose "Cooper's Famous Fried Chicken" with a side of collard greens and baked potato. The food arrived and I was immediately transported to my grandmother's kitchen in Mississippi where a virtually identical meal was prepared twice a month after church on Sunday. It was delicious! There is a reason Coopers fried chicken has won first prize twenty years running at the annual chicken festival. Can't wait to get back on a Wednesday when in addition to their delicious fare, they also offer a variety of home made cobbler for dessert. Mmmmm!
Best fried chicken hands down! Great folks too. Enjoy...
Such good food and friendly staff. It was my first time there but not my last. My only other comment is that the owner needs a larger place. With food that delicious, you're bound to stay full. Best of luck!
I am the Virginia chapter lead of a national organization. While planning a meeting in Orange, VA, the venue manager recommended Coopers as a possible caterer. My wife and I had dinner there to check it out. We were very impressed with the quality of the food and the professionalism of the owner, Denise, so I arranged for her to cater my meeting a couple months later. Having grown up on Delmarva, home of the broiler chicken industry and amazing fried chicken, I have to say that Coopers' fried chicken is as good as any I've had - it is her mother's recipe! The flavor of the pork BBQ is superb. The coleslaw is my wife's new favorite. For our meeting, Coopers knocked it out of the park and I received several compliments about the lunch. In fact, a former chapter lead wrote "this was the best lunch the chapter has ever had!" Denise's coordination throughout was PERFECT. We coordinated everything by text so we had it all in writing for reference. She was both proactive AND always responded to me within a few minutes. The entire experience could not have been better.
Great food, great place! Employees are very friendly. We always have a good time when we go.
Si no la has probado, ¡deberías!
Great good made to order. Very friendly and prices are good with the amount of food you get.
I took my husband here for his birthday. He so enjoyed it. He said it was the best fried chicken he’d ever had. We’ll be going back again soon.
I had lunch with a friend, we ordered the Steak/ Cheese, gave us plenty of onion rings, the sandwich was very delicious. I would visit again.
Love the food at Coopers. Only downfall is the use of disposable plates. Some meals I do prefer to eat on normal dinnerware.
Outstanding service, friendly staff, exceptional food. Traveling from western North Carolina. Will return again for the corn pudding 🍮.
Update 8/12/23: I decided I did not want to cook for my family today or tomorrow. Went online and decided what I would order. I decided I wanted to wait until I get there to order so our food would be hot. I drive 30 miles only to see a sign on the door at 3:00pm that read “closing early 12 noon.” Nothing noted on website. I will not exclusively drive there to get food anymore. They’ve too inconsistent. Lost another star. Update: So while they don’t lose a star because their food is still great, the wings are almost half the size of when I first tried them. They didn’t even pass the key fob test. This is very disappointing. Probably won’t order wings again. I’m so picky about soul food since I cook it masterfully myself. This place is legit! Nice big fried chicken wings. So tired of tiny pitiful wings (yes I know the more organic usually the smaller the wing. But let’s be honest, no one comes to a place like this for health reasons. Lol.) My new go to when I want soul food (which I don’t eat often anymore) and don’t want to cook it.
>Pros: *Everything was cooked to perfect doneness. *The waitress was attentive and friendly. *Food came out quick. >Cons: *Fries, collards, and chicken had no seasoning, not even salt (likely why the salt shaker on the booth table was empty). *The cheese on their cheese fries was pumped nacho cheese, which for the price I assumed it would be melted shredded cheese or something rather than unsalted with pumped cheese.
The service was good, but the chili dog and loaded baked potato were unavailable as there was no chili. The hamburger was okay. We will try again with the fried chicken.
Food is decent but the business is very inconsistent. Hours change by the day. No one answers the phone. Never know if they are open or not unless you go in person:
We first heard about Cooper's when we went to the festival Ben gordonsville. We heard so much about it and couldn't wait to try the chicken. When we finally found their stand, the line was just astronomically long. We walk by it as they're cooking the chicken and it smelled really good. We were too hungry to wait in line so we decided to walk up the street to an actual restaurant. We've been to that restaurant many times but this will be the first time we tried their chicken. We were completely stunned by how good the chicken was. We even walked back to the festival to see if the line had gone down for Cooper's, which it did not. We were unaware that they had a restaurant as we drive by this place all the time. We decided to go recently. There's plenty of parking, and the restaurant itself is semi hidden from the roadway. The signage is not that great, until you actually show up to the actual restaurant pull into the parking lot. Upon entering, we were immediately hit with a heavy smoky oil feel. To be honest with you as soon as we entered all the eyes of everybody that was in there went right to us. I didn't really care at all, I believe it was just more of a curiosity thing of who was coming in. There was only one booth open which had not been cleaned yet which was taken care of very quickly, we sat down and provided menus. The obvious choice was to order the fried chicken with a couple of sides. When we receive the food, the fried Chicken was hot, the macaroni that I got was lukewarm, and the french fries that I got were lukewarm. The flavor for the french fries was what you would expect, and the macaroni I actually liked the flavor, however the issue that I had was the temperature. Now on to the chicken itself. The chicken was okay. I was not a fan of the actual breading of the chicken. It was too thin however the chicken was not soggy when you buy into it. And the flavor of it was slightly bland. The chicken that we had at the festival at the restaurant by comparison was crunchy and a thicker breading which is something that I am used to when it comes to fried chicken. The seasoning with the other restaurant was significantly better. I was really looking forward to eating here. The staff were friendly and fairly attentive. Unfortunately another negative to this experience was about 20 minutes later we had to find a bathroom which we did not have when we went to the other restaurant. We both had to go at the same time which immediately told us that it was the food at this restaurant. I'm glad we went there to try it out, however I don't think we'll be returning.
They never answer the phone and you never know when they're open. So frustrating. When we do get to eat there, we get the chicken and waffles, yams, and country fried steak with gravy. Food is yummy.
Servings are small. Like two table spoons. The first time it was just okay. No other soul food near so I went back. Mac n cheese was burnt collards were too vinegary. 🤢🤮 Fried chicken taste like I cooked it at home. They should serve this food in senior homes. No reallly, don’t waste your money. Drive to Richmond and eat Mama Js. Bigger servings and beater food same price. Smh never again. They got me twice lol
Amazing food, service and atmosphere. But google says they close at 1030pm on a Friday and we show up at 7:40pm and are told the kitchen is closed and turned away. Also the door says closes at 8pm??? So do they close at 730pm, 8pm or 1030pm. We spend good money and tip well every visit, but to be turned away 2 Friday nights in a row once before 730 and once before 8pm is poor business where the cooks decide when the place closes because they don't want to cook anymore. WE WONT TAKE OUR BUSINESS HERE AGAIN
Lil irritated drove an hour away because I heard their food was good just for it to be closed it said on Google it says they're open until 7:30 got there at 6:25
Went there for dinner. The food was terrible. The service was terrible. Never got drink refills after asking three times forgot half of our order.
We ended up Canceling our Catered Order as Denise wanted us to pick it up at 10:30 for a 2:00 function. All of our Guest were out of town and we were staying at a Hotel. No way to keep the Food Hot or Cold. Liz at Coopers was Great !!! Denise could've cared less about her Customer. We will not be ordering from them again.
I don't like writing bad reviews, I understand it can hurt a business. So I don't write this lightly. The restaurant is dirty. The saltshaker was covered in sticky grimy something. The floors haven't been washed. Dust was hanging from the light by the register and the Pepsi fridge that is visible also was covered in dust/ grime. That is all what was visible when you sitdown. The staff was nice! However I watched them pickup dirty dishes and something off the floor, never wash their hands and then handout new plates of food to other patrons.
