How this place doesn't have a Bib Gourmand or a star is wild to me. This is the best Omakase experience I’ve had by far.
This is not only the best sushi experience I have had in CT but probably top 5 period. So impressed. You do pay for it, but the quality, creativity, attention to detail, and service make this a very worthy spot for a special evening. Great sake list. We shared numerous items, but the uni and baby scallops really stood out.
For Omakase, hand rolls and sushi, it is the best place in Haven. We like going early, and you must have a reservation on a weekend since it’s very popular. Good quality fish and the hand rolls are nice and crunch. We love the concept of Omakase, yesterday we had 9 sushi Omakase that also included Chu-toro and O-toro. They also have a very comprehensive list of Sake and offer flights. My go to dessert is Anmitsu 🥰 which is a happy ending to this amazing meal. Gen and his crew are amazing!
Best omakase and sushi in Connecticut. I usually eat omakase in NYC, but today I tried Hachiroku for the first time. The fish is high quality. Chef GEN is from Japan and super passionate. It is not cheap but I think it is worth it. Just like other Japanese sushi chef, he offers many white fish in his omakase menu, which I really like. The place is clean and minimalist. I will visit again!!
We stumbled upon this place today and I can say (as a new haven resident for 5 years) that this is on my top 3 favorite restaurants. The atmosphere is serene and peaceful- the menu eclectic & diverse- the wine and sake were great. Special shout-out to Charles!! The best sushi you might get in new haven.
Fantastic sushi bar. It’s pretty small and with limited bar seating which results in a more intimate experience. I got a red miso soup, the black cod appetizer, 2 hand rolls and 2 sushi bites, as well as a hen & heifer panna cotta dessert. Everything was delicious and the sushi tasted very high quality. It was fun to sit at the counter and watch everything get made as well. The only caveat is it can get pretty expensive if you go the omakase route (or depending on what kind of dishes you order)! I didn’t get anything to drink but there’s a nice selection of sake, whiskey and wine also!
Amazing food, loved talking to the staff about sake and the food. Some of the best sashimi I've ever had. Love this new addition to the East Rock food scene.
You might be wiser to take my biased opinion lightly. Since posting the first review on Hachiroku 1.0, I finally made it in to 2.0, which opened late January 2023. I have MANY stories but I don't wish to update the original review. If you know, you know. I am posting this on the (late) night of the one-year grand opening anniversary of 1.0. It's so nice to see how much a team achieves over time. Happy Mother's Day 💐 It took a lot of discipline to let my camera eat first. I'll do better on the photos, but I was famished and walked away extremely happy. Please view exhibit for more details~ Thank you so much, Gen-san!! --Parking-- It's much less stressful here than in DTNH. No designated lot available for the restaurant. However, there are quite a few spots for street parking, and even residential. Do not try to park on Hine Street, as those are private residential spots. Otherwise, I don't typically worry about parking in East Rock. But definitely be vigilant. --Finding the Storefront-- It's easy to miss. Look for a wooden door (I want to say stained maple) with black trim, and an overhead light. First, situate yourself on foot near Hine Street and State Street, facing State Street. Rotate left (notice the small lot on the corner). Spot the white building. And count I think, 2 doors down. Walk in, there's a landing zone, then you'll see the counter space when you pass through the doorway. --Price-- Rather reasonable for the experience, even if hefty. You do not wander in here; you plan on coming in. --Seating-- You should plan seating on Resy. It goes fast. If you're lucky, you can waltz in and find a spot. --Service-- Gen-san is the sweetest and one of the most humble, highly talented chefs I know. You are often taken care of without even knowing he did something for you. He's quiet and swift. Years of experience. Charles was his support for the night, and he handed me the temaki in the video. Also sweet, also very competent. Years as well. --Cleanliness-- Immaculate. Given, it is a brand new spot, but with all the intricate dishes, there's a level of meticulous organization. Things are strategically placed in front of you, there are hand sanitizers between every couple of spots.
Got take out here. The sushi box is so cute. Little box with salmon sashimi, fish roe, rice and fresh wasabi. The wasabi is so good! Can't wait to go and eat inside the store.
Sooo amazing sushi and give me a lot of inspiration to make it even more delicious
Comparing this to Nobu Malibu, KazuNori LA, Sugar fish, I can say Hachiroku handroll is better. The selection is great, each with it's own flavor, seasoning, and special something that makes it different. The ambience is very minimal and casual. Service is excellent, has the japanese politeness you'd find in Tokyo.
Simply amazing. Pricey but worth every penny if you’re looking to treat yourself and/or loved ones. The food, service, and vibes were exquisite! They were offering a sake flights special when I went which was amazing.
Amazing food! The hand rolls were really good and highly recommended ! Great service and friendly stuff! Will definitely be back!

Elevated and exquisite, with state of the art ingredients, execution, seevice, and atmosphere!
I died and went to heaven
This is a rare gem! Stunning menu, something for everyone. The team was very helpful in describing things on the menu and also had excellent knowledge of the sake options. The attentiveness of the service did slack a little towards the end, but it was inconsequential. Oh and their bathroom is cozy! With a sake flight and a full belly, I spent what I would expect and left totally satisfied. I cannot wait to bring more friends here!
Phenomenal food on its way to a Michelin star. Very expensive, but worth every penny if you're looking for quality Japanese food. All the staff are Japanese themselves or have lived in Japan at one point, making all the food truly Japanese inspired. Shout out to Charles! Super cool guy and added a lot to the experience.
Ricardo was our sushi man and made the atmosphere and experience amazing. Each roll was delicious. He was friendly, and I felt that each piece he individually did for us was with extreme care.
Amazing experience all around. Like everyone has said, on the pricier side compared to other in the location but well worth it for sure since they do it that much better! Super friendly staff that had great recommendations for both food and drinks. We had the wagyu tataki and a scallop dish to start followed by a 7pc nigiri omakase. Both were a great way to start off that gave a large variety of the menu. We followed up with an assortment of handrolls and every single one blew us away - the toro, scallop, and Gen’s special (toro with uni) were amazing! Will definitely be going back soon.
Absolutely amazing! If I had the money I would eat here every day. The atmosphere was wonderful, the staff were so kind and attentive, and the food was incredible! Each dish was so delicious and beautifully presented, it was truly a joy to dine here on every level. My favorite hidden gem in New Haven!!!
Phenomenal. Best place for sushi in all of New Haven. We love Gen, the sushi chef, so much. The food is always amazing and fresh. We are here all the time. We literally came for dinner twice in a week. I would recommend making a reservation if you plan to come on the weekend as it will usually be packed. My favorite is the toro hand roll, chawanmushi, and the yellow tail handroll. Can't wait to return again!
This is the second top-notch restaurant by Hachiroku in New Haven. The decor has a feel of a small Tokyo sushi bar. The food is awesome.👌It's a culinary experience. Reservations are highly recommended as there are only so many seats.
What an addition to upper State! Excellent food, warm and professional service, a great space. Can't wait for them to start serving sake. Beyond the perfectly fresh fish, the baby scallops have been a standout.
Came here on a whim based on a NH Register article and blew all expectation out of the water. Simple and intimate setting with impeccable service paired with the best (to be honest, the best) food we’ve had in recent memory. Perfectly low-key and unpretentious. Will definitely be on the regular rotation. PS the Hen and Heifer dessert was a double-bonus extra.
We enjoy everything about hachiroku, but our most recent visit wasn't as satisfying as previous ones. Nearly 80% of the handrolls we ordered tasted very similar and were excessively sour for our liking!
Great hand rolled sushi. Really enjoyed the appetizers as well. The bites for two were particularly great. Yuzu cake was awesome too! Definitely a new highlight in East Rock.
This is one of my top 2 place for Sushi in New Haven. Great experience, very good traditional Japanese sushi, knowledgeable chef and great whisky selection.
I've been waiting to come here since it's opened and honestly I'm upset it took me this long! I went by myself, which I normally don't do because I'm awkward but honestly it was a great experience getting to chat with a few nice strangers and eat some of the best food in CT. I can't pick a favorite because everything was so good. When I go back I might just close my eyes and check things off on the menu because you really can't go wrong.
One of the best restaurants I’ve been to, and definitely the best sushi in New Haven. Incredible service and exquisite food. An incredible experience Charles was amazing!
Wowww what a great place. I love this place. The eel hand roll and yellowtail hand-rolls were amazing. The salad is amazing. Basically the whole experience from start to finish was amazing. The staff were soo attentive and nice. I love this place!
The very best place to eat authentic Japanese in town! Every single bite we had was off the charts! Coming back real soon!
Phenomenal sushi. Gracious staff and prompt service. Entire experience was exceptional. Couldn’t recommend this place enough.
Every single dish is worth every penny. Each bite somehow got better and better. Can’t wait to go back again!
Run 🏃♂️, don’t walk — as good as everyone has said! Low-key chill vibes. A special occasion place, for when you’re looking to treat yourself and loved ones.
Really fresh and affordable option for omakase
Absolutely top tier sushi rolls, the chocolate banana mousse is a must try :-)
World class sushi. Would do well in Tokyo. Plus some one of a kind fusion dishes.
Incredible experience. The food and service are just impeccable. I can't recommend enough.
Some of the freshest and best Japanese I’ve had in the United States.
I was alone. It was very inviting, quiet and delicious.
Excellent small plates with sake!
Delicious
Exceptional. Rare gem.
Wow 🤩 so delicious 🤤
Completely blew me away
Awesome Valentine’s Day fixed menu experience. Incredible sushi and service. Highly highly recommend! The Bluefin Tuna Toro will blow your mind. And the Hokkaido Scallop straight up slaps.
Such a lovely dining experience. All the fish was so fresh and tasty :)
Omakase is a fantastic value. To the reviewer wondering why this (and any other of the city’s excellent spots) has no nods by Michelin, it’s because CT doesn’t pay to be in the guide.
It was an amazing dinner. It seems their fish delivered directly from Toyosu, the biggest fish market in Japan. We'll definitely come back for our anniversary!
OMG! An authentic Japanese sushi restaurant with a fantastic atmosphere and delicious choices. Extensive sake menu. Prices are reasonable considering you're paying for high quality sushi. I've eaten high quality sushi in Japan and this restaurant is on par if not better. I recommend getting reservations because of limited seating and high demand. Give it a try you won't regret it!
I visited this Japanese sushi restaurant in July 2024 to celebrate my partner’s birthday and it was an amazing experience. Every piece of Sushi was high-quality, fresh, and incredibly tasty. Having lived in Japan for 30 years, I felt the quality was just as authentic. I also reserved seats and included a request for a small birthday desert. I was not sure if it would be possible, but they made it happen, and my partner was happy with the surprise. Next time I want to bring my friends or family. Thank you so much for your excellent work.
I rarely write reviews, but this place is truly exceptional. I visited for a birthday dinner, and it was simply perfect. The food was incredible, and Charlie and Riccardo were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and made the experience unforgettable. I will definitely be returning. This is the best sushi I’ve ever had!
Absolutely blown away by Hachiroku Handroll Sushi Bar & Tapas in East Rock! From the moment you step inside, the intimate atmosphere sets the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. The warm, inviting vibe is perfectly complemented by the smooth R&B music playing softly in the background—such a unique touch that really elevates the whole experience. The star of the evening, however, was Charles, the chef extraordinaire. Not only is he a talented sushi artist, but his journey as a Marine from Chicago adds so much depth to his story and his craft. Charles is incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and sushi techniques, but it’s his kindness and charisma that make the experience next-level. He takes the time to connect with every guest, explaining the origins and nuances of each dish with a passion that’s absolutely contagious. The handrolls were pure perfection—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Every bite was a testament to the thought and care put into the food here. The appetizers? Equally amazing! Each dish was crafted with such precision and creativity. If you’re looking for a hand roll spot that delivers on both food and vibes, Hachiroku is it. Do yourself a favor and grab a seat at the bar so you can experience Charles’s magic up close. This place is a hidden gem, and I can’t wait to come back!

New spot in CT that's catered towards an intimate dining experience. The dishes are all very unique and perfect for a light dinner with delicious wines and sake. The staff is friendly and gives great recommendations. The atmosphere is quiet and feels like you're in a small spot in Japan. Dishes are pricey but everything is very fresh and worth the $. Definitely check this place out!
