Excellent experience on a Saturday late morning, around 11:30 am. We initially were going to the filling station cafe, but as usual is it insanely busy and food is just ok. If you walk down across the street and a few more steps, you’ll find this relaxing, welcoming, and quieter restaurant. No wait, plenty of seats, very welcoming staff. Great for a nice breakfast and lunch date or with friends. Food was good, flavorful and delicious, and the sweet potatoes dip was awesome. Good value, good flavor! Professional waiter and staff!

First time here. I ordered the bowl of leek soup with grilled ham and cheese and green apple sandwich. Delicious! Also ordered tortilla chips with pimento cheese salsa and water. Sat outside in the patio area for lunch.

Sometimes it's tough figuring out what you want here with such a huge menu. But I haven't had anything bad yet! Service is quick and friendly, like you're in their home. And as the restaurant is a converted craftsman, it does feel like you're in their home. If you sit inside, enjoy the tchotchkes and teacups and what-have-you. If you sit outside, enjoy the fresh breeze and people watching. Great for bringing out of town guests before or after strolling the shops in the circle.

An excellent cafe near Chapman U. A friend of mine had referred me to this place but I had never bothered checking it out until yesterday. The atmosphere is great, very relaxed with a splash of eccentricity. There is seating both outside and indoors. The staff is fantastic, friendly, and attentive. The food, absolutely delicious. My friend got the cheese ravioli and i got the garlic chicken sandwich. We also had red hummus and some cookies. All were superb dishes. If you're by the orange circle this is definitely a must visit.

It's been years since we last ate at this location. The service was outstanding. I believe our server's name was Lissette or Linnete. She was very attentive and charming. We stopped there before a program at MUSCO. We shared a turkey, cream cheese and cranberry sandwich with a cup of soup (tortilla for hubby and chicken & rice for me). Ended our meal with a complimentary homemade cheesecake. We got to the theatre in plenty of time.

My family and I had a great lunch here on Cinco de Mayo. We sat on the covered patio. Service was prompt. Our server was friendly and courteous. Loved the food: tacos, felafel salad and the Asian chicken salad were big hits.

Fantastic black bean chili and quesadilla. Iced tea was refreshing and the young redheaded waitress was great. Very attentive. Comfy atmosphere like an old family restaurant

This little gem is so cute! Absolutely loved it when I came here. First of all its so festive and feels like home. A very comfortable feeling here. I ordered the chicken sandwich.... It was so delicious my friend ordered the vegetarian enchiladas they were so good to! 10/10 will come back and eat here again. Parking might be limited though you might have to walk.

Rutabagorz is an Old Towne 🍊 Orange institution. Among the 1st healthy life style restaurants in Orange. Must be doin a lot right cuz been around for decades! Building is very charming inside & out. B&B feel to this relaxing eatery. Recommend the patio if possible. Good for ADA/Disabled friendly. Salads 🥗's are exceptional & come in huge bowls or large servings. Dressings r original & bold. Match well. Has stock as well. Soups are original and incredibly home tasting delicious. Sandwich 🥪's & Wraps r very tasty and healthy. Menu can provide for just about any diet. Wonderful people watching cuz in Old Towne Orange 🍊 CA Patio is stellar. Handicap parking 🅿️ in back. Eager to go again after writing review so yummy. So many entree's we wanted to order. Defly next time:)) Cookie 🍪's r delicious and usually found at register. Customer Service is wonderful & staff is very very kind. Enjoy! Highly Recommend 🤙

Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch here! I had the chicken salad sandwich served on Squaw bread and The Lone Ranger cookie. It was a sunny afternoon and loved sitting on the patio. Our server was very attentive and helpful in suggesting items off the menu. I also love the location of this Rutabegorz amidst all the charming stores in downtown Orange.

Years of incredible vegetarian & gluten free along with really great comfort, food and simple meats and proteins. Don’t forget to buy a cookie before you go. They are the best wish I could eat their pie still but it’s not gluten-free. Love the patio. Love the inside. Feels like home.!!!

This place is hippyish and cool. The food is very healthy, freshly prepared, and reasonably priced. I had the veggie burrito (pictured). I also really like veggie surprise which is rice with steamed veggies topped with cheese. The $1 roasted red pepper hummus is great too.

This is a nice restaurant where sandwiches, wraps, soups, and salads are served in this part of Orange County near by the Orange Circle Antique Mall.

Having visited the original Rutabegorz during my college years, my wife and I unexpectedly discovered the location (now one of 4, I believe) in Orange. We could not have been more pleased! The retro 70s decor as well as definitely Californiesque old-home-restored-to-restaurant ambiance created a go-to dining location. Such, however, was even pleasantly eclipsed by the delightful service and delicious cuisine. I do not say the latter lightly...the food WAS delicious! So...if you are looking for a lunch place to meet (whom all will enjoy) or a comfortable, yet fun, date night out, I would like to suggest Rutabegorz! You'll only thank me later! :)

Been going here for years and have always loved the place. Great food. Great service. Something for everyone on the menu.

Everything was delicious, the cranberry mimosa, the avocado bagel, and the sundae. I honestly was not expecting the sundae to be so big. The service was prompt and friendly and we were able to eat outside.

The menu is health-conscious and clean tasting... service is always great and it’s a gem of an eatery in the Chapman U / Orange Circle area, just north and away from the hustle and bustle of the Circle traffic. Ambiance is great and you feel like you’re at home when eating here... because literally you are in a converted house. Definitely recommend the cookies (during the holidays, the pumpkin cookie is the best thing ever) and many menu options can be had in multiple forms (example, wrap, sandwich, etc.). Some of my favorites are the 1) Chicken Curry Wrap, 2) Apple, Ham & Cheddar Melt, 3) Garlic Chicken Wrap. You definitely don’t feel guilty eating here.

M
Michael Thornburg

Ate outside and got to sit next to the heater. Just made for a good night. Had a salad in one of their “ large blue bowls “. Fresh and large, super good.

A
Aria Deosil

Ok, I'm blown away. Ambiance is beautiful. I've been in OC for a year and this is the first meal I've eaten here that doesn't taste mass produced or like it came on a food truck. Everything tastes from scratch and like family recipes. I'm surprised that a huge bowl of pasta is only $10. Dog friendly. The food came out fast, and our server Evonn was helpful and sweet. She even brought some water for my dog. 10/10 recommend

We were walking the downtown area looking for a restaurant that had vegan options as well as something my veggie hating 14 year old would like. This was perfect. Hubby had a quinoa wrap, I had a Mediterranean salad son had shrimp Alfredo and daughter pizza bagel. We sat outside and the atmosphere was so nice. The staff was attentive and friendly. We’ll make the hour drive to come back!

D
Donald Vincent

Stopped here for lunch to meet and old friend on the way to San Clemente.....What a great place!! Located in downtown Orange it was easy to get to. Parking took a moment but not bad. The service was wonderful. The price was reasonable and the food was plentiful and wonderful and the choices were many and diverse. I had the Rudy's Club and ate about half and was full. Overall it was a wonderful place. I would definately return again if in the area.

K

Great little restaurant with an interesting variety of food (especially the Veggie Surprise). Save room for dessert, too! The eclectic decor gives you something to look at, no matter where you’re seated, but I just love the patio on a beautiful day ~ and those days are plentiful in sunny, Southern California!

D
David Carr

I have been here a couple of times and the food is fresh and delicious. They normally have a $1 special appetizer that is a treat. The Orange location is great for indoor or outdoor seating. I look forward to returning - trying to save some room for a scrumptious dessert.

Denise was fantastic! Food fresh was and tasty! One thing is I wish Denise would have brought us the desert menu that she offered to bring us after dinner. BUT in fact it was a good thing as we really try did not need it! Our meal was healthy and no need to spoil a good thing! :)

This place is good for family get togethers or a causal lunch with a friend. You are able to reserve a table ahead of time which is super helpful! We always order the nachos with the killer chili to share! Sometimes some of us even just get that as our meal. Joe’s bbq sandwich is also a family fave & the summer salad! Good variety for different taste buds! Everyone can get something here that they’d like :) Plus the servers make sure they assist you with the best customer service!

Great restaurant near the circle in Orange Ca. My daughter introduced me to this spot when she was a student at Chapman College. The garlic chicken sandwich is delicious. They have a varied menu with many vegan choices as well.

Visited for a mid-week lunch and the place was hoppin. Excellent patio that allows for people watching and fresh air. Vegan and non-vegan fare with an extrnsive menu. I had the ceasar wrap and it was excellent. Price is reasonable and service was better than expected during the busy lunch rush.

Huge portions! There salsa feed at least two… everything on the menu they do really well. Better for smaller groups but I did see a picnic table in the back that could accommodate a larger party.

I love this restaurant! I'd never been to the location in Orange; the neighborhood & the atmosphere are fantastic & the staff is super nice & attentive! We sat on the patio, watched people walk by, it was relaxing. The only complaint I had were the little birds flying around are not afraid of people!

Grab a glass of wine and sit down, because it'll take you a long while to read through Rutabeorz's extensive menu. Everything looks delicious and healthy. I ordered a beet and mango salad with a zippy orange dressing, and butternut squash ravioli, which came slathered in delicious pesto and a generous helping of broccoli. I spit these two items with a friend and we were fully satisfied with the portions. We had room to split a slice of boysenberry pie with whipped cream, which was served warm. My only complaint about my experience (and I'm admittedly not easy to please here) is the coffee tasted burnt. Still, I'll be back again tomorrow to try another salad before I head out of town. Affordable, fresh, tasty, healthy food, with lots of choices, and outdoor seating in a garden-like setting. There's a lot to love about Rutabegorz.

G

One of our favorite places to eat.. love the patio seating, but inside is good! My favorites are Green chile chicken enchiladas plate(which could be shared!) And the turkey walnut cranberry cream cheese sandwich...full sandwich or half with a cup of soup! Yummy! 😄

Wonderful experience dining at this adorable restaurant. Greeted by gorgeous flowers which sets the tone immediately. We ate outside, but indoors was so very charming. Salads were huge and delicious. Can't say enough good about our server. Didn't get her name but pretty, long red hair in a braid. So sweet accommodating, and attentive. We were celebrating birthdays, they went over the top to help us celebrate. If you're in the area, enjoy a meal at this little gem of a restaurant. I highly recommend!!

Can’t believe this was our first time here! Always busy and kept hearing how delicious and big the salads are — Yes! Between the 3 of us, we had a garlic chicken sandwich, g Chx wrap, and a Beth Bowl (along with nachos and a complimentary chip/dip to start). Large servings of each - daughter was happy to have some leftovers to take home! Quite yummy - will definitely be back.❤️

Great atmosphere in this quaint restaurant. The service was excellent. It has a very extensive menu, so many good and healthy choices. We started with chips and a humus dip. My wife had the California Mediterranean salad, (it was huge), I had the turkey avocado wrap. Both were delicious!

One of our favorites... They have good healthy food and tasty salads. This isn't quite the place for a fancy meal, but healthier tasty meals. Their selection is quite varied, and I have tried several items through the years, but often go back to choosing our favorite salad. My kids like their food here too. When we are super hungry we start off by sharing the nachos on the patio for a great outside dining experience. They make some fantastic cookies and an incredible cheesecake. Their cheesecake is so good, I ordered a whole pan for my wife's birthday one year. They have a flavored iced tea i really enjoy as well, great with or without sweetner. Their specials like the various dips are great, and very affordable to start out a meal. Took my Mom here once for her birthday because it is a lot healthier than most other restaurants, yet still tasty. The inside dining was perfect for Mom since it felt comfortable to enjoy time with family. Very homey and relaxing place to get a good meal.

This is a very unique eating experience! The restaurant is artsy and funky chic! The menu is huge with many dishes created at Rutabegorz! There are many fresh and delicious salad entries, sandwiches, hot entrees, soups, wraps, bowls, smoothies, desserts and they have a liquor license! Something delicious for meat lovers, vegans and vegetarians!

I’d give this place ten stars if I could! We had a great time here! We tried a lot of different foods and everyone enjoyed their foods. The Nachos were tasty, the appetizer was spot on. The drinks were fantastic, the service was fast and kind. Wow, they hit it out of the park and won the World Series!!!!

This is by far one of my favorite spots to go to. I love the healthy style food. I love the service, & the location is great. You can always find something to eat any time of day. I enjoy sitting outside & soaking up the sun. However, the inside is cozy too. I love the turkey avocado wrap. I definitely recommend it. Staff is excellent. Because I go quite a bit, they already know my drink preferences & will even ask if I'm having the usual. I appreciate that so much & I highly recommend this cozy spot. Parking is a hit or miss because of how busy they get. However, if you can't find parking in the back or right in front, you can usually find parking around the corners or up ahead. They are definitely more on the healthy side of the food chart but they do have great desserts.

J
Jessica Gilbert

I love Rutabagorz. I have tried several items on the menu. It is always fresh and good. The menu allows me to choose something different each time I go so it keeps things interesting. Service is almost always great. The outdoor seating is great for our perfect So Cal days.

I have celiac disease so I am incredibly sensitive to gluten. The waitstaff was really helpful with making sure my order was safe for me to eat. I ordered online and called to ask that they mark my order as an allergy, so they would take extra precautions like changing gloves and cleaning their workspace. When I got there for pickup the owner spoke with me and she even took my bag from me just to take it back to the kitchen and double check that they actually did do their allergy protocol for me. It was really nice and I felt really comfortable eating the food.

R

The food is always fresh, well prepared and yummy. The staff treats you like family. The prices are very reasonable. We always get the special dip of the month, a wrap, salad or sandwich. And save a cookie for the end. Love sitting outside a people watching too. This is the best of downtown Orange.

Great dining in a period grove house in downtown Orange. Food selections are plentiful, tasty and offers a great variety for everyone. Staff is friendly and accommodating. This is a not- to-miss place and is located a block away from antique shops and Sits across from Chapman University.

We come all the way from IA & always eat here when in Orange. We love sitting on the patio and sharing The Garlic Chicken Salad & The Walnut That Kissed The Chicken sandwich served on squaw bread. The menu is extensive & something for everyone. Our son who has Celiac can also enjoy several options that are gluten free along with gluten free cookies for dessert. Mmm 😋!!

D
David Gray

We always enjoy coming here! Food is always good and lots of healthy choices. They always have a one dollar appetizer special. Today they had a kale hummus with tortilla chips. It was excellent. We are big on salads and they have a great selection of salads. I had the cob salad which was great. You definitely don’t feel like you’re at a chain restaurant here… Love the eclectic feel of the converted house right here in oldtown Orange.

A

Lots of choices on the menu. Enjoy the outdoor patio with your pets. Friendly staff. Close to Chapman campus. Recommended by everyone to us for the gluten free options. Sandwiches were good. Also enjoyed sangria and a cherry spritzer. Tried this new restaurant last week and had a great time. The salad and bowl was delicious. Truly recommend it. Great deal for the price. Oh my goodness!!! We loved this place, set in the old part of town, shops all around, and I believe they even owned a BnB next door.. the variety of different food was amazing and very reasonably priced... The ladies room was something else, that was an experience for me... It is well worth going back to, and enjoying the little "Mayberry" old town!!!

M

I wasn't expecting to be a fan. I had only known it for being vegan and vegetarian, but it turns out their options can include meat if desired! The ingredients are extremely high quality and the Garlic Chicken Salad I chose, along with some scrumptiously moist carrot cake, was beyond my expectations. I suggest to anyone looking for a delicious, homey, and attentive restaurant to give them a try. Don't think you'll be disappointed.

Huge menu, good food. As other reviewers said, "it reminds me of going to Grandmother's house." It is full of antique furniture. The staff are friendly. Parking can be challenging since it is in an old house and you have to park on the street. I recommend this place and would eat here again.

Cute place and interesting seasonal menu! I did not enjoy going out for food because of lack of healthy options at other places but this place have plenty of healthy options with dietary restruction! Good late spring summer place since the menu is light, healthy, and cold(like wraps, salad, and sandwiches). Server was kind and attentive too! He knew what we needed without us asking! I wished bathroom was a bit cleaner though.

We did our team building lunch here and pre-celebrated one of our team members’ birthdays. Our waiter Chris was very accommodating and gave us plenty of attentive services. The atmosphere is also awesome. It’s cozy and very home-like. Great choices on the menu. My Thai Wrap was good, very fresh. My only wish was that the wrap itself has more taste so I don’t have to rely on the sauce to flavor it. The the sauce is yummy.

I like this place a lot! Huge menu with many healthy, vegetarian, and vegan options, but with meat options too. Prices are still reasonable, service was excellent. My chicken wrap was awesome.

Came here hoping to get a healthy yet fulfilling meal, and it was pretty good! Not super spectacular health or taste wise, but overall a decent meal. Tried one of their smoothies with yoghurt and it tasted like they used some fruit jam or preserve instead of real fresh fruit. The food they offer is great in that there are plenty of vegan options, but a lot of it has plenty of cheese and is cooked in oil that lingers in your mouth after the meal. For a healthy option I’m looking for a meal that leaves me feeling fresh and great after eating, not oiled down. If I come back, I’ll try one of their salads and see if it’s better. Otherwise, I loved the variety of veggies in my dishes, as well as the perfectly cooked brown rice. If only it wasn’t so oily!

Really nice setting in a converted house just a stone’s throw from Chapman University. The Chicken Twocos were great. Just basic but very fresh ingredients. The house coffee was a little thin.

I almost feel like there are TOO MANY options here! The menu is huge and there are tons of salads, sandwiches, wraps, entrees, sides, etc. to choose from. It took me forever to decide on what to get, but thankfully my server was very patient and helpful with suggestions. What I assume is newer revision of the menu includes symbols to indicate whether an item is vegetarian or gluten-free, and I was grateful to see a good number items that were both. While nothing is indicated as vegan, my server told me that most of the vegetarian items could be made vegan by omitting the cheese and/or dressing. They seem to be accommodating to requests like that. I got the falafel wrap on a gluten-free tortilla, and my server said that it would come with extra fruit and hummus to make up for the pasta salad and creamy dressing that I couldn't have (to keep my meal vegan and gluten-free). It was delicious! The falafel was a tad dry and crumbly, and the wrap did fall apart easily, and it ended up being a bit messy to eat, but not too big of a deal if you don't mind eating a wrap with a fork and knife. There are also two vegan and gluten-free cookies that they have, which I'd gotten a couple of days before during a coffee-to-go stop here. The Chocolate Coconut Walnut Cookie is amazing. I'm sure the Oatmeal Raisin was good, too. The iced coffee that I got was also HUGE ... like 24 oz or maybe even 32 oz?

Great place for breakfast and lunch. Haven't tried their dinner options. Everything is really fresh and service is friendly. The atmosphere is casual and cozy. The restaurant used to be a home they have converted into a restuarant.

The food is pretty simple, but you'll probably feel healthy after eating here. Whatever the special is, (listed on your tabletop plastic advert) you should get it. Always a great taste and cheap. The rest of the menu is hit or miss, portion sizes are good (no need to get apps), and you'll certainly feel healthy afterward!

Amazing food. My 1st experience was takeout, and this restaurant exceeded my expectations! I had the soup (leeks) it was incredibly hardy and flavorful. The size was perfect, so perfect. I had no need for my salad that I ordered. The salad was the tuna (blue) one, and I ate that the next day for brunch. Wonderful portions, nice prepared food. Included utensils. I will return to the restaurant when I am back in Orange. This is a must got to restaurant!

It felt like Server didn't want to share the info about the ingredients! After asking for vegan waffles, she recommended getting the crepes, and they came with dairy whipping cream! We were disappointed having this food at our favorite restaurant! But, the ambiance was really pretty 😍 much recommended for its lovely location and atmosphere !!

First of all: This restaurant DOES have vegetarian options, but they ALSO serve meat. The food here is very good. Interesting and delicious flavor combinations. Service was pretty good, but nothing special. The outdoor seating is nice, especially since it's in a nice area right between Chapman University and the Orange Plaza (the Circle). The chairs, tables, and menus (not laminated, stained) are all a little chintzy, but surely nothing that should deter anyone from coming here.

We’ve been going here forever. This restaurant keeps its 1970s-era Earth-lovey vibe, all while being modern, delicious, friendly, and approachable. I love the creative salads (though they’re huge), and the sandwiches are good, too. My only complaint is that there doesn’t seem to be any whole wheat bread. The closest they have is “squaw” bread, which is tasty, but quite (very...) sweet.

An incredibly varied and unique menu of fresh, healthy dishes in a homey, welcoming environment. Excellent place for a group with varied dietary preferences/needs. Save room for dessert! Lovely outdoor setting, too. Location parking can be challenging, but this is located near the Circle in Old Town Orange - and only a couple of blocks from a Metrolink station. This meant a fabulous date night meal and a stroll for us with time to watch the world go by from a park bench by the fountain. The only reason I did not give five stars is that the dish I ordered was overwhelmed with a layer of pesto. Taste was very fresh, but lacking in salt and flavor complexity for me. We are planning to come back, though!

Honestly, I was disappointed. My mom talked it up to me but it's hard to be excited when they were out of the first 3 things I ordered. It was good but it wasn't great. I had some veggie scramble type meals and they were just kinda basic. They couldn't make the first 2 things we were going to order and then when I arrived they informed me they actually couldn't make one other item as well. They rushed and made my new thing while the other food got cold and it just wasn't the best experience I could have had. The staff was very nice and gracious and even gave me a free cookie and the atmosphere was quaint and cozy. I might try it again in a while but I was underwhelmed. I went for dinner but maybe lunch or breakfast would be better!

Quaint surroundings, has patio and indoor seating. Large choice menu.

I had heard great things about this restaurant as my girlfriend and her friends recommended it. I will preface this review by saying this is about the preparation of one item and not the entire order. I had ordered the falafel salad for take out. Unfortunately I didn’t see the salad after picking it up due to it being in a bag with multiple other items. I didn’t get a falafel salad. Instead I got mostly lettuce with shredded carrot and olives (no other vegetables as indicated in the description) and 3 pieces (if you were to imagine one large falafel cut into quarters) I got 3 pieces which were rock hard. I’m assuming this was just one dish that was hastily prepared but hope that the restaurant takes notice and ensures it doesn’t happen with anyone else’s order.

We had a blast! Good vegan options and place is very dog friendly! The food was great, the patio in the shade is lovely in summer; great and friendly service and massive plates for cheap. 50$ for the two of us. That's 2plates and 2 drinks. Really decent for Orange County, will come again and highly recommend! Edit: ok came again and this time with a newborn. As a courtesy, asked the waiter if we could breastfeed with a cover to basically hide baby and was told we had to go in a little room in the back. We ended up having to go back to the car to breastfeed. A bit annoying and uncomfortable to see my wife being stigmatized for breastfeeding in this day and age... I'm also pretty sure this goes against lactation rights in California.

Sadly the food at this rather charming restaurant is very poor. They have an enormous menu (itself not a great signal). I ordered the vegan chicken burger which came on a partially frozen bun with no sauce or anything to give it moisture (fine, vegan substitutes for indulgent meat products are never going to be great). But the truly odd thing was that it came with a side of turkey chilli. It's really bizarre to serve meat with vegan meals without warning. But what makes it worse is that the vegan chilli was really, really bad. Thin watery medium with pale unseasoned meat and some beans. It was also served with a bland pasta salad, and some melon alongside pickles. Truly, truly strange meal. It is a nice place to sit outside and the service was good. But I would never ever eat here again.

R
Rog Solaris

Quite a disappointing sandwich, unfortunately. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere, but a very underwhelming and weak club sandwich. It was served on stale, basically supermarket thin, white bread. Couple of thin little slices of deli meat, thin little slice of tomato and avocado, sealed packets of mustard and mayonnaise on the side like it’s a ballpark hotdog. How dare they charge 15.75 for this. Service was friendly though rushed. Why does every place in California bring you the check the second you finish eating?

R
Racquel Bolton

ate here months ago and just now doing the review on google. this place was nothing special. the food was so bland and did not taste fresh at all. every thing tasted as if it came on of a can. there was no seasoning in the food at all. the best thing on my place was the garlic bread and i mean who doesn't like garlic bread. i know what kind of people this place is for, people that only like a tiny bit of salt and pepper in their food because this place is not for people that actually likes flavor.
