Primo Playa del Carmen Reviews
If you’re ever in playa del Carmen this is a spot to visit. It’s so aesthetically pleasing. The food is amazing with an open kitchen concept you can see the chefs grilling your food not too far from your table. The bone marrow is a must try, the oysters, the octopus and everything they have to offer. I have no complaints.
You could smell the wonderful smoked aromas from around the corner. Right as you walk in you can see where they are smoking the meats underground. The kitchen is open and we really enjoyed watching them make fresh tortillas and tossing them on the grill. The taco appetizer was superb and the suckling pig terrine with roasted cabbage and potato pureé for dinner was a hit. The barbacoa with tortillas was a favorite as well. It was so good we needed more tortillas to get every last bite! The owner Pedro suggested the warm dark chocolate cake with triple chocolate ice cream and salted caramel for dessert as well as the roasted plantains with piloncillo syrup, cacao, amaranth and cream. This was our first time here and Pedro spent a lot of time sharing his story with us. We had a wonderful time meeting him and hos staff.
Amazing menu. Started with the tuna ceviche - best I’ve had anywhere. Followed with the suckling pig terrine with cabbage and potato purée - language does not permit a description. Wow. Delicious. Pricey spot but absolutely worth it. Great service, wide menu and a fantastic location. A must if you’re visiting PDC. A++
During our stay in Playa del Carmen, we ate at many different places, but this one truly stands out above the rest. The food here is unbelievably good! On top of that, the staff is incredibly friendly. Tip: Don’t go to this restaurant at the beginning of your vacation, because everything else you eat afterwards will be disappointing!
Excellent atmosphere. Amazing dishes. Perfect service by Charlie, with detailed explanation about each dish! We fell in love with the “second chance tacos” and actually with every dish we ordered. But definetly, the second chance tacos is something I can eat forever! Also the mexican wine is perfect!
Where to start….Primo is a place where you come you experience a culinary orgasm. When you combine the bone marrow appetizer with an order of the brisket, the explosion of flavor is enough to make your eyes roll back. It’s fatty but not too heavy. You can tell the chefs handles each dish with care. From visual plating to the flavor profile, they really care about the culinary experience of their guests. We also ordered the roasted cauliflower and the blacked pork belly. The roasted smokey flavor of both dishes really comes through perfuming through each bite. Point is friends, please make an effort to come here. You will get an elevated experience above what the you will get eating at local places. Remember to order drinks too. You’ll want a pairing to help wash down the bites if you find the combination on the heavier side.
We had an incredible dinner at La Perla in Playa del Carmen! From start to finish, everything was top-notch. Our waiter, Santiago, was amazing—super friendly and knowledgeable. He gave us some great recommendations, and we ended up sharing a couple of dishes between the three of us. The short rib was out of this world—tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Every bite was a hit. The drinks were also really good and paired well with the food. The atmosphere was relaxed but lively, and we just had an all-around great time. Definitely one of our favorite meals in Playa. Can’t wait to go back!
No exaggeration: the best meal we've had anywhere the last week in Mexico. The bone marrow was quite possibly the most exquisite one we've ever had in my lives. It was served with fresh corn tortillas right off the grill and didn't even need the lime and salsa that came with it. We had the seasonal mahi mahi and grilled octopus as our entrees. Both were great, but the octopus in particular was to die for. Literally like our palettes were having an orgasm. The sous chef, Roberto, took care of us and helped make it an unforgettable experience. This place is the real deal and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone in the area!
We had a late dinner/snack at Primo and enjoyed the experience for the most part. The restaurant is truly beautiful and smells divine with the open grill kitchen. The service was a little slow (it took us around 15 minutes just to get our water). The food was pretty delicious overall. We had the pork belly (succulent), the aguachile (fresh and filling), and the second chance tacos (good, but the lamb lacked a little flavour and was greatly elevated by the delicious broth). We appreciated that the server brought one of our group members little samples of the aguachile sauces so that he could confirm that he was comfortable with the spice level. Compared to other meals we've had in Playa, it felt a bit expensive for what it was, but it was a good meal overall.
The food - top notch. The ambiance, cute (and better than the old location). Service: I’m never going back again (says it all). Food: It’s not Mexican food, but it’s amazing food: • I was skeptical about pork belly as a whole meal but I was thoroughly impressed. Highly recommended • The octopus was pretty and my friend was quite happy with the taste. • The brisket though, is good and is a very big piece (so filling for sure), but in my opinion not worth 600 pesos good. • chocolate cake with ice cream: to die for (but not a big piece). They could’ve given a little more ice cream (it’s not even 1 scoop - looking more like bird poop). • we don’t drink much, so we each got 1-2 glasses of wine. I’m happy with it. Ambiance: lots of space, and decoration is nice (“tulum” vibe). Music is low enough to carry on conversations easily. Weather proof. No AC but big fans. Service: Super disappointed. I’ve dined at fine dining. I’ve dined at hole in the wall. So I’m not a snob. I adjust my expectations accordingly. This place has all male servers (that’s when you know they try to look high end). The prices are definitely trying to be “high end”. In this case, we expect service standard accordingly. Our server was Luis. There’s macho micro-aggression coming through his attitude: he was smiling for tips but every now and then when we didn’t understand him (because his English wasn’t good and his brain seemed to be wired differently - against common sense), his real attitude slip out. We really struggled with him. In the end, we still gave him a standard tip (not more, not less) despite of his attitude. He was NOT HAPPY and he made it very obvious about his expectation for more tip (all the fake smile instantly disappeared - only the microagression left lol). That turned me off even more - most servers in Mexico are gracious for this optional free money, especially given he didn’t even deserve the tip to begin with!! Until the restaurant fixes their service, I will not be going back. Based on their response, they have no plan to do so, so they lost me.
