Bread Alone Rhinebeck Reviews
Felt it's worth adding some detail to my review. I often try to stop in to the cafe when in rhinebeck. Love the breakfasts if I have time to sit. In my last view I got a great cup of coffee and a pastry and it was great. Really you can't go wrong here.. it's always busy but never been a had a bad meal. Keep it up!
Bread Alone in Rhinebeck, NY is an absolute staple. The restaurant is always clean and the staff is really friendly and swift. The food is extremely delicious and their coffee is easily the best in the surrounding area. The baristas on bar really know what they’re doing! Great place to grab some breakfast/lunch and simply enjoy the vibes.
My family and I have visited this lovely bakery in Rhinebeck many times. They have a wide variety of options on the menu - sandwiches, baked goods, and a wonderful selection of coffee-based beverages to choose from. There is ample seating space inside and outside in the Courtyard. My first visit here was when my WiFi went down and I needed a space to work. Their internet is reliable and I never felt rushed. I was joined by other people who chose to work as they enjoyed their coffee and breakfast in a very relaxed setting. I highly recommend to anyone living in the area or just passing through!
Great food and prices and friendly workers :))
I love coming here for brunch! The lunch options are delicious (vegan options are just as good as non-vegan) and it is right in the heart of Rhinebeck! Not to mention the baked good are wonderful. Definitely take the time to stop by while you are in town!
This was my favorite coffee spot, but after reading that its products are local, organic, and responsibly sourced, I now consider it one of my favorite businesses. I stop by the Rhinebeck location and try vegan options. The Vegan chocolate pound cake is delicious and I look forward to trying their sandwiches this week. 5 stars for being friendly, efficient, and caring for the environment and its community.
Efficient, personable customer service. Delicious, fresh food prepared exactly as ordered. Bright, airy, clean atmosphere at pick up. Everything top notch. Thank you, I will be back so many times. :)
Delicious and healthy can't be beat!! Plus great prices. Staff was very nice and accommodating. I love that they serve breakfast all day. Again, clean ingredients and delicious is what we all want. Shop local first!
What an awesome bakery and coffee shop. All of their breads and pastries are five star quality. Their bagels are as good as any I've ever had. My only concern, they ran out of take out "shmear".
What a wonderful bakery with excellent pastries! I was visiting from Manhattan and needed a little pick me up and ordered a tart and an eclair. Both were so tasty I had to go back the next day for more tarts and pastries. Their Geneva cake & almond croissants were simply delish. Much better than some of the popular bakeries in NYC.
It was a hustle and bustling Sunday morning. The air was fragrant with vanilla, cinnamon and the smell of freshly toasted brioche rolls. We enjoyed a nice cupof coffee, breakfast brioche sandwiches and a lovely lemon berry scone. Such a wonderful way to spend the morning visiting with the girls.
Decaf cappuccino had great coffee flavor. Tasted like regular. Verge burger was good. Too much bread and too big for my taste but nice cucumber salad and spicy sauce. Would go again to try other things.
Great food and atmosphere, and they let me stay after closing because there was a major torrential downpour, thank you so much!!!
Definitely the most popular bakery in Rhinebeck. Everything is lovely. Everybody is well informed and helpful. Perfect location in the center of town and pretty inside.
Excellent service and an enticing aesthetic in their dining area. Coffee was good although if you're used to the PNW perhaps you'll feel a little differently. Only had the oatmeal but everything in the menu seemed deliciously palatable.
What a great place. I bought cookies they are so soft and delicious. The store was packed because the food is so good.
I had a delicious bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich along with their dark roast coffee which was really good. Despite there being a line out the door, my order was taken in about 5 minutes and I had my sandwich in another 3 minutes - excellent, fast, service. In the back they have a really nice outdoor patio which is a very pleasant place to eat your breakfast. This Bread Alone in Rhinebeck is much more efficient than the one in Woodstock. Highly recommended.
Once a little hole in the wall, Bread Alone has evolved into a wonderful food and coffee joint while still holding onto its roots. The bread and pasties are tasty and baked well. The coffee is the best in Rhinebeck, full bodied and well made. And the people here are so lovely: I have a toddler and everyone is always kind and patient with us. Come!
I have just arrived in Rhinebeck and found Bread Alone. I won't venture anywhere from here...when you find perfection, why venture. My airbnb doesn't have a microwave but does have a little fridge. Bread Alone has healthy grab and go food I can stock up on. Yup. Perfection.
Amazing pastries and love the breakfast burrito! Cranberry walnut scone was outstanding, and the latte with oat milk tasted like a perfect burnt marshmellow. Very narrow entrance so hard to navigate with a stroller.
Call me old school but I like a little bit of help... food is great but with two kids and a senior citizen it can make going out to eat challenging.
I was surprised there was a back room to sit and enjoy your food. I had an egg and cheese sandwich.
Their egg, cheese and sausage on a baguette was AMAZING. So fresh and delicious. The bread was nicely toasted eggs weren't over cooked, cheese was perfect and the sausage was juicy.
Services prompt and friendly and informative. I have been using this location now here in Rhinebeck for 6 years. Great Artisan breads and other amenities of food never seem to fail my palate. I highly recommend any location of bread alone for food and gatherings. Handicapped people will not have issue getting in and out.
We had breakfast here every morning during our stay in Rhinebeck. The baked goods were excellent, the coffee outstanding local grinds, and the staff super friendly even when there was a huge line. They recently refurbished the restaurant and everything is spotless and well organized.
It makes me so sad that I live a four hour plane ride and then a two hour drive from this restaurant. Absolutely fantastic food, especially for breakfast or brunch time meals. I had a chicken panini style sandwich and the aioli on it was so good but not overwhelming. It did have a lot of greens, though, they were practically falling off, but that's a plus to me as it means they don't skimp on anything. The chicken was cooked perfectly and although I had high expectations for their breads, they blew me away. I'm glad we stopped in and got food on my way out of town and the extremely long line I saw here at Christmastime last year is no longer surprising. I'd wait in it too.
I initially gave a review of 5 stars but didn't write anything. Let's fix that. Bread Alone makes some of the best bread I've ever had this side of the Atlantic. I could probably eat the Cranberry Pecan loaf every day... for the rest of my life and not get tired of it. It's just so damn good. The restaurant is equally fantastic. Every time I've been there, the food has been consistent and delicious. The staff is friendly and attentive. The atmosphere lively but welcoming. The perfect place for a date or brunch with friends and family.
Really great breakfast sandwich. Best part my son and daughter in law took us there Thanksgiving week end. Coffee was good too!
Bakers muffin is excellent. Friendly service.
The two stars was a mistake..typo maybe but this place was great. We had an almond croissant, 2 coffees, a spicy green egg sandwich and avocado toast...which was my favorite. The courtyard in the back is perfect to enjoy summer day with good food. Highly recommended!
Had lunch here twice in one weekend, both times at the back of the cafe with table service. The food was superb - all the freshness and deliciousness farm to table promises. The staff were also great and the premises absolutely charming (beautiful fresh flowers!). If I lived here I’d buy a meal ticket. Love this place. Try the carrot bahn mi and treat yourself to a huuuuuuge hot chocolate!
This location in Rhinebeck, NY is warm and inviting with plentiful amount of seated locations inside and out. I would recommend trying out this particular spot if passing through town and need to take a break!
Even the premade sandwiches are good. The bread is sooo good.
Devoted to bread in a way that borders on the spiritual, this place elevates sourdough to near-biblical status. Each loaf seems to glance toward the divine—its crust crackling with intent, its tangy interior unfolding with the complexity of aged cheese and the warmth of memory. Whether you're a true believer in transubstantiation or just hungry for something remarkable, this is communion.
The food here is always *chefs kiss* I ALWAYS swear by the grilled cheese with tomato and it’s like heaven. The tomato they have is extremely flavorful and almost gives a pepperoni feel without the meet. Bread here is always top tier (obviously) . I couldn’t even remember to take a picture so here’s the wrapper lol
If you’re looking for a cozy Hudson Valley café that takes bread seriously, Bread Alone Bakery & Cafe in Rhinebeck delivers a warm, satisfying experience centered around artisanal baking and simple, well-crafted food. 🥐 The Bread & Pastries (The Star of the Show) Bread Alone built its reputation on organic, slow-fermented breads — and it shows. The sourdough has a beautifully blistered crust with a chewy, tangy interior. Multigrain loaves are hearty without being dense, and baguettes strike that perfect balance between crisp and airy. Pastries are equally impressive. Croissants are flaky and buttery with distinct layers, and the sticky buns are indulgent without being overly sweet. Seasonal fruit tarts and muffins tend to highlight fresh, local ingredients, adding a nice regional touch. Standout: The classic croissant and any of their rustic sourdough loaves. 🥪 Breakfast & Lunch The menu goes beyond baked goods, offering satisfying breakfast and lunch options. Breakfast sandwiches are rich and comforting, served on freshly baked bread (which makes all the difference). The smoked salmon bagel is well-balanced with fresh toppings. Grilled cheese and panini options are elevated by the quality of the bread. Soups are typically seasonal and pair beautifully with a slice of warm sourdough. The portions are generous but not overwhelming — ideal for brunch or a relaxed lunch. ☕ Coffee & Atmosphere Coffee drinks are well-made, with smooth espresso and properly textured milk in lattes and cappuccinos. The café atmosphere is bright and welcoming, with a mix of rustic charm and modern comfort. It’s a popular spot, especially on weekends, but the energy feels lively rather than chaotic. 💰 Price & Value Prices lean slightly higher than a typical neighborhood bakery, but the organic ingredients and craftsmanship justify it. You’re paying for quality — and you can taste it. ⭐ Final Verdict Bread Alone Bakery & Cafe is more than just a bakery — it’s a community staple that excels at what it does best: exceptional bread. While service can feel more counter-style and quick than intimate, the food consistently delivers. Rating: 4.5/5 Best for: Breakfast, brunch, coffee dates, and picking up a loaf to take home. If you’d like, I can also create a shorter Yelp-style review or a more detailed critic-style version.
This Bread Alone location is wonderful although the one in Pheoncia is spectacular but either way it all about the exceptional bread. At this point I only eat Bread Alone Bread! Its quite simply the best
Friendly faces, delicious food and top notch coffee. What more could you want? I really enjoyed this little jaunt off of the highway to grab a cup of coffee and breakfast. I almost didn’t stop because my GPS gave me only 3 stare reviews, but thankfully Google reviews were more accurate. Located on Main Street, with parking right next to the building, it was easy to access. They have an impressive variety of menu items from hot dishes to grab and go take away snacks. I had to partake in the pastry offerings…yummy. To stay healthy, I tried the breakfast burrito, and my only complaint was that I couldn’t finish it. It is huge. Make the stop, you won’t regret it. 🥰
It’s so good we went back twice in 1 day! Make sure you pick up your bread and pastries early as they sell out of some items by early afternoon, even on a Monday! For breakfast we got the toast and sandwich pictured, delicious! Hot honey is very very hot! Cappuccino was delicious. We returned for iced matcha and chais for lunch along with regular & chocolate Croissants, lemon scone, canele, & eclair. Everything was truly amazing, restaurant was clean, plenty of seating, lots of variety to eat & drink, positive vibe. Grab an olive loaf of bread sliced to go, no regrets!
Absolutely delicious and freshly baked goods. The croissants met our expectations being crisp and flaky. Additionally, I had the chicken noodle soup with fresh bread which was perfection. The service was quick and convenient. Everyone was wearing a mask which I appreciated. We sat outside and enjoyed our lunch as there are benches along the street. Great location and town.
Very busy around 1 pm on Easter Sunday. Lots of good choices for brunch, a bit higher than a diner, but the quality was excellent. Great breads, coffee and pastries. A bit small on the portion size, but not terrible. I'll be back!
Came to bread alone on a Friday after noon, there was a steady flow of people in and out and most tables were being used. I had no trouble getting a seat after ordering. I froid the selection here quite nice with a Parisian ambiance with pastries and posters. I order a lemon loaf and latte. Both were yummy and average. The Americano was delicious. I think this is nice place to meet a friend to do some work or even chat; it was quite loud and chatty. I usually don’t mind that though.
Pop and I went for lunch. He got the split pea soup. I got a salad w grilled chicken, plus two Arnold Palmers. The soup was tasty, pop was happy. My salad was good. Some kind of nuts in there that had a bit of sweetness and crunch. Very tasty. A bit spendy but food was good. Love going back there.
I was last here in winter of 2018 but will be returning to the area soon and can't wait to revisit this place. I had the best baked goods there, my favorite being the giant macarons. Yum! Update: Went this weekend and ate the cheese danish and oatmeal cookie pie; both were fantastic. Unfortunately the eggnog macarons we got were hard as a rock but we didn't know it until we tried them later.
The reason I’m only giving 4 stars is that I was Disappointed that the butter was not pure butter. It had an underlying texture that was oily. Otherwise it is still the best bread, muffins and pastries in the Catskill’s
We got a very lovely brioche. It was delicious lightly toasted with butter! We managed to stay strong and not buy a slew of other goodies. It's much less busy during the week so that a tip that will save you time
Very pricey and breakfast sandwiches were only okay, especially sausage, egg, and cheese since sausage kept sliding off the sandwich during consumption. Baked goods were much better and Irving Farm coffee was also fresh and brewed properly if a little on the stronger side. Family-friendly, including for babies. We were able to sit with a large stroller travel system and the changing table was sturdy and vertical, which is much easier when changing a newborn baby.
Food was great They forgot our coffee and tea. Got a free hunk of bread out of it.
As a native German I always look for good bakeries when I am traveling. Decent bread, the way most Europeans understand it, is hard to find in the US. Hence I bake my own bread when I am at home, and Daniel Leader’s book “Living Bread” is one of my favorites. I was truly looking forward to visit Bread Alone in Rhinebeck and the bread I saw and tasted did not disappoint! However, I was disappointed by the pastries I sampled: the croissants were not fresh and the muffins unimaginative. - In other words, “Bread Alone” it is.
I recently stopped in to Bread Alone Bakery & Cafe for a bite to eat while a family member was in the ND Hospital. They have a variety of baked goods and sandwiches, some grab and go, and drinks. The lemon poppy seed pound cake was very good; however, the chocolate chip cookies were average.
It was a bit chaotic inside and some things weren't actually available, but my breakfast sandwich was great and they had decaf. My friend enjoyed her latte as well. There was a bit more of a wait than expected, but everyone was pretty friendly. We would come back!
Cute cafe with lots of seating. It met expectations but didn’t exceed any. Hot chocolate, pecan sticky buns, and cheesecake were great. The iced matcha was okay and the croissant was nice. We got a loaf of bread and enjoyed it! Staff were also nice.
Bread alone is EXCELLENT for breads and decent for a breakfast or coffee. We had brunch today and have visited a few times in the past. Todays visit was pleasant though nothing was insanely memorable. Counter service and easy enough to find a table on a Sunday AM though it was bustling. I had the almond croissant (pretty delish) and the white bean escarole soup (good). The sour dough slice that came with my soup stole the show of course. My husband had the breakfast burrito which was good sized but veryyyyy bland. Our chai tea lattes were yummy as well! Most important take away is to take a loaf or two to go!
The cake and coffee were very good but I had to give you 3 stars because our table was dirty (it was not cleaned from previous diner) and the seating was very crowded. People walking behind my seat kept bumping me due to lack of space between the counter and the tables. The staff was very pleasant. I would come again but will select a better location to sit.
A great meeting spot. The staff and service are outstanding. HOWEVER for a cafe, ALL THEIR CUPS LEAK & HAVE LEAKED FOR A YEAR! Still happens every week so we go elsewhere for coffee now…. They still don’t use compostable products yet, and they still don’t provide recycle or compost for customers. Furthermore It’s very loud inside and the new renovation makes it even louder, so it’s wonderful to meet on quieter days but it’s usually busy until about 3 or 4pm. The food is decent but prices have gone up and ingredients removed. Sad to see a place not being responsible for its growth and impact on the environment and village. They could definitely be doing a lot more. Hopefully this review brings some awareness to the management and changes needed for sustainability and integrity
Really nice outdoor tables for eating. Scones and Croissants were a day old so hard to evaluate them except to say they were stale. Iced coffee was ALL ice. Disappointed since the other reviews were good.
Going back over 30 years now, this was a small mom & pop shop that made some of the best bread you'll ever have had. When their product started showing up in grocery stores in the region, we were excited to have it more accessible, yet concerned about how it simply couldn't be as good as the fresh from the oven on location bread we knew from them for all those years. It was still quite good, but realistically, not as good as on the spot. The issue, however, is as they grew, and renovated, the bakery itself turned into a bit of a hipster-type overpriced sandwich spot. Don't get me wrong, it's still very good. But not much better than a Panera anymore, and higher priced. I'm no longer inclined to stop there. I miss its more humble beginnings. Best bread around, and the prices were great too. Still 3*s because still very good bread. You're not likely to walk out of there complaining about the taste. Your only disappointment/reservation might be that it's at this point another overpriced sandwich shop. It works that gimmick well though.
I loved BA and have for years but rarely eat there. Can always get great coffee. But today picked up a couple of breakfast burritos on my way to meet someone at the ER and they were pretty awful. Soggy, limp, brown avocado, very skimpy amount of ingredients, etc. Was really surprised.
Good coffee, fresh pastries, and friendly stuff, but the food is really lacking.. coming from someone who ate there many times (mostly because there are no other options in the area) their sandwiches are so unbelievably BORING! Like dry chicken salad and a piece of letters. That’s it..! Why so sad? Add a slice of tomato, a smear of mustard, a pickle?! Please do something to bring in more joy into the food you’re serving, life is hard enough.
Good service, but a chain nonetheless. Overpriced and charging nyc prices for middling baked goods, and mediocre coffee. If you want good coffee go across the street to Samuel’s, and if you want baked goods go to taste buds in red hook or the Rhinebeck bagel shop for bagels
Every time I go there they either make my order perfect or mess it up. Most of the time they mess up my beverage order. For example, this morning I was given a hot latte when I asked for an iced. One of the workers was nice enough to remake it, but…where’s the espresso I mainly paid for? I basically paid almost $5 for oatmilk and caramel sweetener. This isn’t my first encounter with them having to remake something of mine, even with food. Each time I go there I’m mainly underwhelmed with how my order comes out and it’s very disappointing, especially with them upping their prices lately. Do better.
Randomly stopped in. Overall, a cute little space with adorably laid out sweets and bread. Bought 2 baked good items, a coffee, and coco. There was barley any coffee at the self serve station. The coco was nothing special; tasted like basic water & swiss miss mix. The desserts were overly moist to the point we couldn't east the bottom half because it looked, felt, and tasted wet.
I work in Rhinebeck near Bread Alone and my colleagues and I frequent the cafe. Unfortunately the coffee is usually bitter / burnt tasting. But I do love their grilled cheese sandwich, and sometimes the soups are good. Always a great selection of pastry items. The customer service has generally been very good, until today. I ordered a kids grilled cheese online because I wanted a smaller portion than the large adult sized sandwich, I asked in a note that they add onions and mustard - there was no option to do so anywhere other than a ‘special instruction’ section at checkout online. When I went in to pick up my online order I could hear one of the employees complaining about my order… when I spoke up she said “why didn’t you just order the adult sandwich since you wanted onions and mustard?” She was so irritated and instantly combative. I explained I wanted a smaller potion, and she told me they were the exact same size. She argued, spoke down to me, and spoke over me. I cannot quite believe how disrespectfully I was just spoken to, over a sandwich. When she told me there’d be an up charge for onions and mustard I said that was fine but that I didn’t have any payment with me because I’d already paid online and I had rushed out of work to quickly grab my lunch. She reprimanded me like I was an errant child. I am absolutely done spending my money at bread alone. This kind of customer service is inexcusable no matter how hard a day you might be having.
Place is cool BUT wanted a solid caffeine buzz. Had to go get a proper coffee down the street. Put more caffeine in that stuff Bread Alone.
This used to be an amazing bakery since the remodel the food has really taken a hit. The croissants on a Sunday morning not a bit of flake to them. The overnight oats were so dry and thick they stuck to the spoon. The muffins not a bit moist. Hearing more complaints than anything lately its a shame as it was great food, great place to meet friends.
Sad to say this was a favorite for my wife and I, we used to live in red hook NY and bread alone was a must every Saturday morning. We loved the food and the service. Recently they’ve changed a lot, we were in town and of course wanted to go back to our spot but what a let down. Now you have to order at the counter and they bring it to your table which isn’t so bad but we used enjoyed the more personal service of the wait staff. The food was nothing to write home about they have changed the menu and it just isn’t as good in my opinion. We even ordered my favorite pastry, the chocolate Croissant which never made it to the table and when we went to the counter to ask for it, the lady put it in an bad an threw it on the counter top, never even asked if we wanted it warmed up which is the only way to have it. Sad to say we probably won’t go there as much as we used to.
This is NOT gluten-friendly at all. They don’t have gluten-free bread, they only have wraps and when you ask them if they have gluten-free options, they’re completely unfriendly about it. I guess that’s what you get at bread alone. Pretty rigid. Even if you order some gf like a soup, they’ll automatically put in regular bread so if you’re celiac, definitely stay away.
We went in for our first time yesterday. The muffin was good. I ordered the latte and was asked if I'd like a large or small. I picked the large and was given a small. Thats okay. We all make mistakes. But, when I asked to get the large I ordered, they poured it into a large cup and added more milk in front of me. I asked them if they could please remake it as it should and was given an attitude and told the only difference on size is more milk. Idk. Not what I expected. What do you think?
Bought an apple pie yesterday, followed the directions on it, warmed in my Ninja toaster oven at 400 degrees for 3 minutes, took out and bad smell came from it, tasted it, tasted funny, not how an apple pie should taste. In the garbage, $35!!
Shame on them for charging outrageous prices for their deli foods like chicken salad and watermelon salad and not even giving you a full portion in each plastic container. What is going on here? Not to mention the lack of friendly customer service that has been ever-present at bread alone for years. It would be a great place if they returned to Earth.
SO disappointing. Always go here for lunch when we can make it to Rhinebeck. The system has changed and you order at the counter, which is fine, but maybe have signage so people know what to do when they walk through the door! The huge problem was that I saw 6 tables, four were 4 tops, each taken up by one person on their laptop having only coffee (neither table had a number for food runner so you know they were just camping out), and this is during peak hours! There were no other tables open, so we left. We would have had a full meal and gotten breads to go too. What kind of business model is that?
Based on this experience, I highly DO NOT recommend this Bread Alone. Yesterday, I purchased a slice of the LEMON POPPYSEED POUND CAKE. Unfortunately I didn't inspect it until I got home, a 20 minute drive. I immediately noticed that it was stale. I did not need to take a bite: it was obvious simply by handling it, something the clerk should have noticed when they bagged it. It was the last slice, which should have set off warning bells. As a business selling food products, they should factor in the cost of waste/spoilage into the price (they are very pricey to boot) and toss old food instead of foisting it on unsuspecting customers. My opinion of this establishment is that apparently they are okay with selling old, stale products. I highly recommend you save your hard earned money and shop somewhere else.
Cappacino had no foam. I asked to have it redone with foam and was told I should have ordered it “extra dry.” “What - never heard of this in NYC….” ”Well this is how we do this in Rhinebeck.” After decades of ordering this drink all over the world it is good to have finally learned the correct way in Rhinebeck, NY.
August 12, 2025: Dutchess County Health Department issued: 4 Critical Violations; 4 Non-critical Violations. Lots of temperature abuse and insects/rodents (14A) were mentioned. Last September, 2024, a critical violation for temperature abuse. Potentially hazardous food handling history it would appear.
