Chen Garden Rochester Reviews
The food is authentic and flavorful. Dumplings are great as are the ribs and chow fun. Definitely a place to try out
update: After several months of struggle and adjustment, the new owners have finally got Chen's back on track. Our most recent dining experience was exemplary! ....................... >< ...................... Over the past 20+ years, my wife and I have dined at Chen's dozens of times. Ever since the Aloha closed, (many years ago) Chen Garden has been our preferred restaurant for relaxed casual dining and quality Chinese food. It was off the mark yesterday, Sunday afternoon (4:30-5:30). We met another couple for dinner and we were promptly seated in a booth in the alcove that is our preferred spot in the dining room. I noticed things were different almost immediately. There was no Asian music. Tea arrived hot and promptly, but the teapot was noticeably dirty. We ordered drinks which were brought to our table late (our soup order had already arrived). The Martini glass (up) was only partially filled. Two other drinks -my wife's and one of our guests were mixed up. As other patrons arrived (the place filled up fast) the service got sloppy and rushed. Clearly, the place was understaffed! The restaurant became so noisy that quiet conversation became impossible. My wife ordered a Scallop dish only to have the waiter return to say they were out of Scallops. The family-style Tofu came with a brown sauce and was different than usual. One of our guests Lo-mien was cold and inedible when it arrived at the table. All in all, the experience was not up to par! I am concerned that the Chen Garden dining experience is changing, and their previous quality is slipping away. This may be our last visit.
I was surprised. I had never been here. I didn't expect a nice sit down atmosphere,an extensive menu ,and bar. I ordered lunch and it was delicious. I had Singapore rice noodles and hot and sour soup. Both were very tasty. Oh .. I'll be back again soon
This is, in my opinion, the best Chinese restaurant in the city. We've been going here for years and always have an excellent meal. Now, it's located in strip-mall type situation, and doesn't look like much from the outside. But step inside to a nice big bar, friendly staff, and a good sized dining room. Their menu is extensive. We're talking like the Cheesecake Factory of Chinese menus. Everything from the ubiquitous sesame chicken to the more nuanced fusion-style dishes are above average in quality. We've always been a fan of their duck dishes, but just about everything is really tasty and reasonably priced. The one constant we order is their Salt & Pepper Squid Tentacles. This is arguably my favorite thing to eat at any place I've been too. Pro-tip: If you like chicken wings, they have HUGE wings and their prices haven't inflated as of late. An order of 10 is still under $10. I highly recommend trying them not plain or "hot and spicy", but using their hot soybean sauce that they use on other dishes. It's kinda a special request, but they have always obliged when we order. It does get busy, so reservations are recommended, but this place will make you a believer and you'll want to explore their menu like my family has been doing for a looooong time.
Great food. Server was very friendly and provided excellent service. My husband said it was the best sesame chicken he's ever had - crispy on the outside. I had happy family and really enjoyed it twice. The portions were quite large
First time there, will go back, food is very good
Went there for the Ninja's holiday lunch. The server was on point and fun. Got that I'm doing something wrong lighting which is right up our alley as we ninjas know how to get down. Food filled us up a plenty and spirits were high.
I've been eating here for years. The food is always good. If you like hot and sour soup, I think there's is the best.
Looking forward to sitting down in this establishment after having enjoyed takeout on 3 occassions. Excellent food, one of my favorites amongst Asian reasturants in Rochester. A real shame I never came here earlier. Definitely my go to spot from now on.
This is my absolute favorite Chinese restaurant to go to! Everything is so delicious and flavorful. Chen Garden has a wide variety of menu items as well as drinks. As an added bonus, you get a complimentary kettle of tea along with crackers and duck sauce.
Love this place and have been going here for decades. New management took over when the original brothers retired about a year ago now, but they have picked up the torch wonderfully. Some menu changes were needed to pair down the extensive menu, but the quality is excellent and hard to find better. Don't believe rumors of people who might have tried once during the cross over period when the new management was learning the ropes while many of the original staff also remains. This place is a keeper.
Great chinese food, very reasonable price for lunch.
It was our first visit to Chen Garden and we can't wait to go again. The food was delicious and plentiful. And the service was prompt and the server was so accommodating!! We loved it!
The Hot and Sour Soup was the best that I have ever had. The Spring Rolls were delicious. The friend Won Ton was so tasty.and I had the Vegetables with Chicken added. It was cooked to perfection. I will definitely be going back, again and again.
We takeout from Chen Garden a lot and it has been our favorite Chinese food spot in Rochester. The food is really good and portions are big. We can usually get 2 meals out of one order! 10/10 would recommend
My former coworker and I come here to chit chat and have a good dinner. I had Orange Chicken. It was so different from other Chinese restaurants! I loved it. Had orange peel nestled in the dish to give an orange scent as well as the taste. The waiter was attentive and refilled my water glass. My friend had garlic chicken which I could smell the aroma of garlic, so I tried a little. That was also good. The place was packed, but you never knew it, as service was great. They do a great business with take out. Oh, candles on the table gave a neat look to the dining room! I can't wait to return.
I went there for the first time last week. The staff was super friendly. The prices were fantastic for what you get. The food was delicious!!! I had white chicken sesame chicken with white rice, egg drop soup and a steamed shrimp roll. My only complaint would be there was the tiniest bit of shrimp in the roll.. but, the sauce it was served with was delicious. There are next to no sit down authentic Chinese places to go to anymore..I will be back… SOON.
Went for dinner because a friend recommended it. Large menu and the food was great. We'll be back.
It was almost closing time when we got there so it was quiet. Staff handed out our food quickly, they were pretty nice considering it was almost closing time. Food was pretty, good would go back again.
I was nervous to try Chen Garden, since I’ve heard a lot of chatter about it not being as good the last few years. I was very pleasantly surprised. It was probably the best sesame chicken I’ve ever had. Saucy, flavorful, and definitely chunks of real chicken, plus tons of broccoli, all as part of a very generously sized plate. The crab Rangoon was great, although not much crab to be found - but anything with that amount of creamy cheese is a winner. Waitress was attentive without being pushy. Festive atmosphere. Huge menu with something for everyone. Give it a try!
Absolutely fabulous experience. I adored the menu that gave quick and simple descriptions & HAD PHOTOS OF EVERY ITEM. This was incredible. The photos were also very accurate. They were able to make many things on their menu GLUTEN FREE upon request, and it was fairly easy to follow their colour coded menu.As a wheelchair user, it was a little difficult to get in and navigate to the bathrooms as they were narrow spaces. If you have someone to open both doors to get in, it will make this a lot easier, and i promise the experience, food, and service are worth it.
The food is amazing. Great atmosphere and service. Anyone who says this establishment is bad, has issues, and I hope they don't come back. Try the crispy lemon chicken, it was superb.
Fantastic atmosphere, great service, great food. One of our favorite spots, and it never disappoints. The food always comes out piping hot, which is just a testament to how fresh their food is and how fast their service is.
Undoubtedly the best Chinese in Rochester. A recommendation from a coworker proved to strike gold. Basil Chicken and egg drop soup were out of this world. So much flavor and all reasonable priced.
Food was good and service is fast. I always order steamed veggies with tofu. My husband loves their food. He likes the Moo Goo Gai Pan. If ordering tofu, remind them to warm it up so all of the dish is nice and hot.
My husband had a hunger for some Chinese food and a place we frequent was closed. I had heard Chen Garden had very good Sesame Chicken, one of my favorites, so I ordered several dishes... sesame chicken, sweet and sour pork, house fried rice and happy family. I also requested very little oil and the addition of a little ginger in the fried rice. All were excellent! The fried rice reminded me very much of a dish my grandmother used to make, following a recipe she was given by a Chinese friend. It really brought back memories of days when Cantonese and Polynesian style food was predominant in Rochester. There's been a trend toward Thai and Vietnamese over the years. Chen Garden has been a hidden gem for many years. I was reluctant to try them at first, due to the decline and closures of some of my favorite restaurants from many years ago...Lin Far, South Pacific,The Aloha, Jade Garden... Thank you Chen Garden, for a delicious memorable meal. I'll be back!
Delicious family portion meals, with a variety of dishes for everyone at reasonable prices. A bit crowded, because it's on the smaller side but the atmosphere was still nice. Lights were dimmed and everyone seemed very happy. They have a cute little bar and tables of all sizes to fit anyone's party. Service was very prompt and they made sure we were always happy. Definitely worth going to if you're in the mood for Chinese.
The family dinner combo's are amazing. Everyone gets a to die for beef on a stick amazing soup highly recommend the wonton taste is amazing especially broth, an egg roll then shareable meals and rice. Been there with a wide range of people 3 - 11 and we always have left overs. You get free tea with every meal and the service is always impeccable. A hidden gem looks tiny and deceiving on the outside but decore is nice and great size with lots of tables inside.
Very good tofu general tao. Can't wait to go back
Chen Garden is a staple of Brighton, NY. It hasn't changed in years and that's what I love about it. You walk in and feel like you're in a dive bar, eating Chinese food. All of their food options are delicious and their service is always excellent. I especially love their wonton soup
This is a snug little restaurant. I've dined here several times, and the food is always superb. They have an extensive menu and the service is great. I'll be back.
This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Rochester, NY. They tick all the boxes: delicious food, cozy atmosphere and really nice owners. My favorite is their Mei Fun and their spicy chicken wings. This pic is Singapore Beef Mei Fun.
We got takeout from Chen Garden today and the food was so good! We ordered beef lo mein and moo shu chicken and enjoyed it a lot. There were people dining in as well—yes, they’re open!
This is my new favorite date spot! The booths and twinkle lights make the space feel so cozy, and the food is great! I try something new every time I come in, and everything I have had so far is delicious.
We stopped for lunch and first of all, we were surprised how large the restaurant is verses it's small storefront size. It has a large bar, booth and tables. The table had those crunchy noodles to drip into duck sauce and horseradish mustard. The menu had a good diversity of choices with pictures of each dish. The drink menu also had cocktails for everyone's taste. Service was efficient and the food came quickly and very hot. We started with egg drop soup that had a rich broth with lots of egg streamers. It was the best I ever had. I ordered seasame shrimp made gluten free and it was delicious. Not as sweet as most places, but I liked better than the sweet version. My wife ordered a stir fry chicken with vegetables. She said it was cooked well, but she would have liked more flavor to the sauce. She usually orders spicy dishes, and said she would definitely come back, but order something spicy. Gluten Free: Many of choices on the menu are marked GF and the menu says "We can make most meals gluten free". Mine was made GF and it was delicious! We will return again and recommend it to others.
I love their dumplings and I always get Szechuan chicken cuz I like a little bit of spice and it's good, clean, yummy food. This place has been a Fail-Safe go-to for many, many years and I'm pretty positive I've never really had anything bad from this location, so as long as you stick to what you know I don't think you'll be disappointed!
A little gem 💎 prompt service, great menu with pictures, and amazing prices. Everything was delicious, dumplings were so yummy and the crab Rangoon was amazing. The hot and sour soup is amazing and comes with the entrees. You're seated and waited on in this restaurant, then they even package your left overs.
We decided to order here from a friend’s recommendation and we were not disappointed. We ordered crab rangoons, orange chicken, and general tso chicken. The sauce for the ragoons was delicious and clearly house made. The sauces on both chickens were so satisfying and good. The portions were generous and well-priced. They even had sauce-candied orange peels in the orange chicken. They are clearly detailed oriented and care about making a good product. While we ordered takeout, the ambience when I went in seemed perfect for a cozy date night or a celebration with friends. Looking forward to coming back!
Having visited this restaurant multiple times throughout the years, it still remains a favourite of mine. You wouldn't expect to see a beautiful, old school Chinese restaurant that's impossible to tell from the outside. Starting off with a couple appetizers, the pan-fried dumplings were delicious and 100% homemade. Crisp exterior and tender filling on the inside. The fried squid was phenomenal. Possibly the best fried squid I've had in Rochester. These were fried to perfection and the squid was tender and fresh. For mains, we opted in for sweet & sour shrimp which is difficult to get wrong. The shrimp itself was ginormous which was great, and the sauce had the perfect balance between sweet & sour and the consistency was great. We also opted in for the market priced crispy seabass. This took me by surprise as I wasn't expecting such a huge fish, fried and accompanied with a great slightly sweet and savory sauce. The presentation alone left my jaw on the ground. The seabass was crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside. Overall, a great dinner, an amazing atmosphere and friendly service from "Wendy." 10/10
First time going to Chen Garden, wow it is beautiful inside. It feels nice and peaceful, darker atmosphere. Food prices are very reasonable and food very tasty. Highly recommend. Second time at Chen Garden, wow! I never thought you can top it. They really go beyond for their customers. Food was delicious and perfect temperature, beautiful. Treated my friend and I very well.
This was a recommendation by my wife.We have not had very much luck with good Chinese food in Rochester. From the time we walked in I noticed that the atmosphere was very spacious and very nicely decorated. The menu has 15 pages of many delicious looking choices to choose from. My wife had a French Martini and it was very good and very strong. I just had water and tea which is what they start you out with when you sit down as well as the crunchy noodles and a nice full pot of tea.We got spare ribs for the appetizer. My wife had moo goo gai pan for her entree, and I had the beef lo mein. The food was so exquisite. Everything tasted great. I high recommended going here if you are in the mood for good Chinese food.
Great food, fantastic price for the quantity & quality of food! Even fried items don't feel greasy or heavy! The ambiance is very quaint. Definitely a place you could take a date too. The lighting is just perfect in this restaurant. It is dim but it gives the patrons the feeling of being in a more upscale restaurant. The menu is quite extensive also❗ Bravo to the proprietor❗
While the service was very cordial and friendly, especially for a VERY busy Saturday night, our egg rolls were rather bland and our entrees arrived "not hot". (I reserve "cold" for fresh-out-of-the-fridge temps, and our dishes were a little warmer than room temperature.) They were tasty, however, and we'd definitely go back for another shot. Our table was in a high-traffic area near the entrance to the dining room, so requesting alternate seating would be a priority for our next visit - during non-peak hours. Don't let the sketchy entryway deter you!
We were taken here by a family member who said it was her favorite, and I totally get why. The menu is set up that you order your style/sauce, then pick your protein (chicken, beef, shrimp, etc.). We each picked a soup to go with our dish, and they tasted great. By the way, if you just order soup, I hope you're hungry, because that comes out in a family size serving bowl. Portions are great. Flavor was on point, spicy was spicy and had flavor, not just hot. Really good stuff. I never would have stopped here on my own but I will definitely be back.
Don't judge the restaurant by the front, from the inside it looks quite nice. Decent selection on the menu and have a few noted to be gluten-free. Everything tasted great, but the server seemed like she would rather be somewhere else. Despite this, she got our order correct and had no issues. I'm not sure how truthful that is as one gluten-free was breaded duck, but hopefully, it is correct.
Ok, so this place has great food. Some of the booths need updating, but I love it. It was like stepping back in time. The outside may make you think twice, but trust me, go in.
The menu is like reading War and Peace by Tolstoy. However, the food is great, the service was good. I've ordered many things and was never disappointed. Try it out. I think that you'll really enjoy it. CR
Haven’t been there in a long time ! over 10 years im sure? But everything is still the same! Like a blast from the past! But a good one!! Food was hot and tasty! Love the takeout microwave safe containers! we will be back! Also best tea ever! I would love to be able to have that at home on these cold nights! 😀👍
After reading some of the other reviews, I do wonder what it was like with the old owners as this was my first time. The 3% card fee shouldn't be told to you when you get the bill. They should tell you upfront. The more we spent, the friendlier the staff became. It wasn't busy at all but they seated people right next to each other which was probably done for the convenience of the waitress. I enjoyed the food. Prices were reasonable. The service was excellent, but if I go again, I will bring my own take home container or tell them I want to do it myself. If you go, don't let them take your food to put in a take out container. It was sloppily done with two different foods mashed tightly together in one paper Chinese restaurant take out container and about half or more of one item (entree) was missing. Very sloppy. I can see why another reviewer thinks the new owners cut corners. I would go again because the food was good and the prices reasonable.
First time ordering. Pork buns and general tso chicken were really good. Chicken was tender and sauce was good. The best I’ve had. Light breading and big pieces of white meat. Great portions. The sweet and sour chicken was bland though and the sauces that came with the food were bland. Fried rice was good. I would go back and try other dishes.
The layout, decorations, dark lighting, and curved half-moon booths, make really great atmosphere. The food itself is really affordable and the menu is like a small book. They bring free snacks and the waiters aren't pushy to get you out for the next group. Would go again to try something new. Vegetarian friendly.
The food is always authentically delicious 😋 But this time the fried rice with veggies was SOOOO oily and I mean oily, and found EGG SHELL pieces while chewing. Not so good this time! Yuk. The place was so busy we didn't returned it. But it will be a while before we go back. 😞
The ambiance is really great in this place. You can never guess how it can be inside while you are outside the restaurant. The service was also great. We ordered veg pan-fried dumplings and veg feied spring rolls.. both were so good. Then, for the main course, we ordered chicken fried rice and Cantonese style dry noodles with white sauce. I wanted to try something new, so I went ahead with this noodles, I like something spicy. Maybe I went with the wrong dish this time. It was kinda blonde, and chicken fried rice was also okay. Everything else was perfect. Just make sure to select the right dish, and the quantity they provide is also huge.
I was looking for a chinese restaurant with good seafood options and to my surprise there were very few with fish options. I chose this one based on reviews. We loved it and would like to go there again. Best - fish with sesame sauce The fish was very soft and the sauce tasted really good. Loved it. The shrimp lomien was a bit bland for our taste, but we mixed it with gravy and ate it. The quality of noodles itself was very good. The waiter looked really tired and was in such a hurry although the restaurant wasn't that busy.
The new owners seem to be cutting corners. I’ve been coming here for 15 years. I don’t eat Chinese food in Rochester any other place but Chen garden. However, my last few visits were not good. My son’s Lo Mein tasted like burnt oil and was inedible. Dishes like sesame chicken used to be very crispy but no longer are. Scallion pancake is just fried dough with scant veggies. My family always looked forward to the fortune cookies with the bill, but those are no longer offered. All we got with the bill this time was a 3% charge for using a debit card to pay! They’re going to run this place into the ground.
It is very hit or miss here now since new owners took over. Food used to be better quality in taste and portions, now it is just mediocre and you get less on the plate. Tea was extremely watered down so more like brown water. I understand that the cost of doing business has increased so charging more for the food is one thing, but charging people a fee to use debit cards is ridiculous especially when you can claim those fees at tax time.
The baffling mystery about the different quality of beef in Chinese restaurants continues. I discovered Chen Garden not long before they changed the menu and seemingly, ownership? I was delighted to find such a place still existed and not only that, but the food was great, too. The menu was recently revamped which from what I see on social media was the first change ever to it. The food has been equally good to me before and after, until this past weekend. The meat in the beef with broccoli was disgusting. It's that fleshy, fatty kind of beef that turns up from time to time. I am constantly flummoxed how the quality of meat can be so drastically different. And how there isn't any QC about this. It's not just Chen Garden. I remember when my previous favorite old-school restaurant Jade Palace in Webster would have this problem. The recently closed New Ming I recall only ever had this issue maybe once. Otherwise, I went to them weekly and it was almost always great. Wonton soup, egg rolls, complementary hot tea and snacks are most welcome. I'm sure I'll go again, but maybe not for a little while.
Ordered two lunches. One is the fish with cream sauce and the other one is pork with cashews, carrots, and celery as well as one soup dumpling appetizer. I have been here before and I have to say the fish with the cream sauce has changed. It's definitely a lot sweeter it's like made with mayonnaise and condensed milk which is worse than before. It was a little more subtle sweetness the last time I was here. The pork is quite salty in a bad way. And the soup dumpling was only so-so. I would say the prices are okay but The food is only okay. It's not bad for a general craving but I wouldn't consistently eat here for the authentic experience
If old Chen was 100, new Chen is about a 80. Wonton soup was perfect. Steamed brown rice was exactly how you would want it for chop sticks. Cashew Chicken had about 20% of the Cashews that it had under prior owner ownership. Chicken was lower grade. Wife’s Mango Chicken had same lower grade chicken. If your a newbie you will think all is well, but if you’ve known the Old Chen you will be disappointed. We have been customers for 20 years, will be seeking other options.
So disappointed with new management. The hot and sour soup smelled burnt and tasted burnt. I changed to egg drop which was very oily. The shrimp and walnut was supposed to come with brown sauce but it was a very sweet sauce. I changed to Basil shrimp which was plenty of shrimp in a salty sauce with chunks of basil still on the stem and chunks of old chewy scallions. The woman at the table next to me ordered beef orange and they brought her chicken. I will not be back
Our family has been dining at Chen Garden for almost 20 years. I’d love to see the new owners do well but changing the restaurant we all love isn’t the way to do that. In the last couple of months the prices have raised by 25-30%, which would be understandable because of the economy, but the quality is not the same. ☹️ We like ordering our “standards,” Beef Mei Fun, a shrimp with Lobster Sauce, Mango fish, Sesame Chicken, dumplings, egg drop soup, etc.. The last few times we’ve ordered, the chicken and beef are tough and shrimp has been overcooked. There are less veggies served in each dish and we were given one small rice for multiple dishes ordered. Also, the dumplings are not the same brand/recipe as they were, neither are the crunchy noodles. Chen Garden used to be pretty consistent but of the last 3 times we’ve ordered, the soup and entrees have tasted different each time. I sincerely hope things improve but with the steep price increases and mediocre quality, I think we have to look elsewhere.
Ordered via Uber Eats. By fsr, the WORST tasting pork egg rolls I have ever had in my life. I didn't even know one can get THAT bad with egg rolls!! Mandarin duck very plain. Not the best Asian food, not by far. Not trying again.
Meal was amazing, food was incredible. but then when we went to leave our waitress chased us to the door demanding $2 more dollars on her tip and ruined the entire experience.
Food has consistently gone DOWNHILL over the past few years. We ordered tonight the shrimp with lobster sauce and it was more like shrimp with broth sauce because it was watery as can be, had no flavor and they neglected to add pork to it which is what gives us the flavor
Won Ton Soup very good. Lemon Chicken was very disappointing. Was a large, thick chicken breast sliced. Chicken was way to thick and dry. Was not crispy enough. This was a signature dish under previous owners. The fried rice was actually dry brown rice. Staff not very friendly. Will not be returning.
Wow, this was the worst Americanized Chinese food I had all 2025... Szechuan chicken, and Kung Pao tofu were bland, despite the Kung Pao being ordered extra spicy and the server asking "are you sure it's already super spicy". The lemon chicken looked, and tasted, like they just poured instant lemon pie filling over it. The interior is a little worn down and the menus have hand written prices and items had multiple prices without any being scratched out. The service was okay.
The quality of the fried rice has declined significantly. Mine was very greasy and spicy in an unpleasant way. I could only eat about 3 bites of it, and felt sick afterwards.
Methinks there are shills about on this website. Phony reviews aside, this place has taken a distinct turn for the worse. I had been a customer of Scott and Sam since the old West Henrietta Road days. But now those guys are gone and what we are left with is a mess. My recent visit opened with fried noodles that were more like toasted cardboard, but the orange sauce remained good. Unlike the past glory days, my beef with scallions was fairly tasteless and about half the serving size of days gone by. My friend's shrimp with cashews was very disappointing and small. But on the positive side, the prices were considerably higher! As the check was delivered, I said "Oh, no fortune cookies?" The server said "Only for takeout!" Never again!
We have given this restaurant 3 chances since the new ownership took over. The quality of food has gotten progressively worse, orders have been screwed up, service charge has been added for credit card use. The last take out was uneatable, we threw it out. Very sad, have done business with Scott and Sam for over 20 years. We will not be back
Called in our order at noon for 6pm Christmas Eve. Waited 45 min and did not get our food.
Loved the old owners new owners on the other hand? You can’t tell a customer to “call back the week of Christmas” tell us that we have to wait then “call the day of” then when we call the day of you tell us that the dinner we have every single Christmas for the past 25 years just isn’t gonna happen this year because they f’ed up. Then offer no apology or resolution. Absolutely never going back.
The appetizers were ok. They were good, but lacked flavor. I had the Won ton/Egg Drop soup and even with adding pepper it was bland, so I left most of it. The Pork egg roll was just non-descript veggies and no pork that we saw. My Happy Family and vegetables came with almost the entire plate of broccoli and 1 baby corn; not a variety of vegetables at all. I asked for hot pepper oil, and the server gave it to another table, so I asked again, and she acted miffed. I separated the proteins and left about 2 lbs of broccoli alone, on the platter it came in. I had 2 tiny pieces of chicken, and 3 small shrimp, and 3 tiny scallops. All lacked flavor except the scallops, which tasted like a chemical similar to Ammonia! They stank when I smelled them. I spit out the first, because it was foul. The 2nd, the same thing happened, so didn’t touch the 3rd. I told the waitress about the taste, thinking they were spoiled, and she said, “The chef said he didn’t put chemicals on them!” I clarified saying I never said that, but it TASTED like chemicals/ Ammonia, maybe spoiled, and she came out to repeat no ammonia was put on it. I repeated my concern, and then she said, “WE ATE YOUR FOOD, and it TASTED FINE!” I have Never experienced such a thing. Very little meat, Way too much Broccoli, and bitter, acrid, chemical tasting Scallops that the chef and waitress ate to prove me wrong. I left 2 pieces of grisly meat that I couldn’t chew, so I was still very hungry, to say the least. My wife liked her chicken dish, so I ate some of hers. The atmosphere is very dark, and the booths are covered in tape to cover rips and tears. NO CONSIDERATION OR COURTESY WAS GIVEN, OR ATTEMPTED, AND WE WILL NEVER RETURN.
Possibly worst Chinese we've ever had ! Rice was dry and hard with no flavor, eggrolls were over cooked and tasted bland. The items were not removed from our bill nor were replacements offered when it became clear we weren't boxing the uneaten items up because they were gross. I ordered the pressed duck and bit into several pieces that were inedible the dish was also extremely salty I actually lost my appetite while eating and my stomach started hurting. Service was ok until the dinner crowd filled up then we were kinda ignored a bit. I eventually asked for a few boxes thinking I could bring a couple of the items home and pep them up like the lemon chicken which was also dried out. The chicken they used looked like it was pulled off of another dish and chopped up. Iv honestly never seen it served that way before. The cut up pieces were flat and dry the lemon sauce was thin and almost completely liquid it kinda slipped the chicken. My son had shrimp lomain which he didn't eat as it was also very bland the shrimp were like rubber. We literally left hungry and a little upset to our stomachs. Knowing we'd never be back was made even better by our waitress who apparently checks your tip. She legit raised her voice repeatedly telling me I couldn't leave until "I gave her more tip" she was actually pressed up on my side tapping the paper with her finger. Everyone in the dinning room was staring and it was very embarrassing. Considering the terrible quality of the food and the downhill service I had tipped what I felt was appropriate. But as it wasnt exactly %15 percent she became angry I felt guilted into leaving another $5 As we were leaving I noticed several people who seemed like employees sitting at the bar. So I'm not sure why our waitress appeared like she was on her own. The food we did box up was completely inedible the next day it all went in the trash. According to reviews this is the best Chinese in the area sadly Iv had better off of a food truck let alone a sit down restaurant.
Food was just okay. The service was terrible, however. I was told by our extremely rude waiter that I was taking too long to order, then he told me that I had to turn in the menu when I hadn't even finished ordering, and when I asked for the check at the end of our meal, he pointed out that my husband was still finishing his plate and said he wouldn't be bringing out the check until he completely finished his food. When I didn't give him a tip, he came back and complained. My husband then gave him one only because he felt bad. I sure did not - this man did not deserve a tip. Disgusting.
We waited for almost 2 hours with kids. It took 2.5 hours to get our food from the point of sitting down in their dining room. Embarrassing. 15 tables? We wound up getting the food to go because apparently they prioritized doordash over their dining room. Even as a doordasher myself, shame on you. Shady. Open a ghost restaurant for door dash bozos. We only got 2 boxes of rice for 6 plates. Poor management. They even told us are meals would be comped so we gave a $80 tip. Only for the last person in a party to get stuck with the whole bill.
Horrible customer service. They take things personal when you cancel an order but if you’re going to pay for something you should be able to get your moneys worth not food that looks like they picked it up off the floor and then try to serve it to you. Also they talk to you reckless.
Probably some of the worst Chinese I have had in awhile. The pork fried dumplings looked and tasted like they had been precooked and held in a warmer for quick service. Soggy not crisp fried bottoms and almost mush rather than a nice dumpling consistency. Filling inside had no flavor and did not look or taste like pork. Had pork egg foo young for main dish. Egg pancakes were overly crisp tasting only of fried oil and the gravy sauce for them had no flavor. Very disappointing.
The new owners don’t know what they are doing and you can tell. Quality of protein is cheap/clearly much lower and yet the prices remain the same. Taste and Quality definitely off. Used to be my go to for Chinese but now will be going elsewhere. Sad to see what Chen Garden has become. EDIT: New owner have added a $100 minimum for delivery. What a scam. Chen Garden never fails to shoot themselves in the foot. Pathetic ownership, good service. Never go to Chen Garden again, it’s a scam
The food is not good at all it used to be the best place in Rochester in my opinion but now it definitely went down hill
I went to the chen garden restaurant 4 da first time yesterday. And that'll be my last time going to this Chinese restaurant. What I noticed yesterday when I came to Chen garden restaurant yesterday. I have asked da bartender, do they have a pupu platter, on the menu. And she said no real fast. Lol, I said 2 myself damn! What's wrong with her. But I just went on and ordered my food. And after I ordered my food from the clerk, he acted like he didn't want to give me anymore duck sauce, and soy sauce, so I had to ask for more soy sauce, and duck sauce, I had to tell him y'all acted like y'all were selfish with the sauce. So hell no. I won't ever come back to this Chinese restaurant. I know there are way better Chinese restaurants in the city. By the way. I wouldn't refer anyone to this Chinese restaurant. 😩👎
I wasn’t a fan of this restaurant at all. Service wasn’t good, food came out cold. Also, the food was very bland. I would not recommend anyone eat here. I came in hungry and left hungry.
Really sad to say this, but: the food was good until I found a hair cooked into our takeout general tso chicken last night. Been a big fan of Chen Garden for a while now and understand that things happen, but I work in a kitchen myself and take the necessary precautions so my own hair doesn’t end up in customers’ food. Bummed to see the same precautions aren’t being taken here.
We came here on Christmas Day hoping for a nice dining experience, but unfortunately it fell short. Our waitress was very rushed and seemed annoyed whenever we needed help. She would drop the food off quickly and walk away without checking on us, and the service felt dismissive rather than welcoming. The food itself was barely warm and lacked flavor, which was disappointing. No one ever asked how everything was. That said, the other staff members we interacted with were very kind and helpful, which we appreciated. We really wanted this to be a positive holiday experience, but it just didn’t meet expectations. Granted it was very busy and they did seat us quickly but everything after was really bad.
Ordered from grub hub, half the ordere arrived. None of the rice that came with the meals was placed in with the orders or the drinks. It was a group order for hospital employees. When I called they were of zero assistance. They only offered to give a credit for the next time we ordered for the drinks. Absolutely worst customer service!
