Donut Star San Diego Reviews
Stumbled in at this amazing donut shop while on vacation from Utah. This place hits the spot!! The owners and staff are super nice and the donuts are fantastic. Highly recommend stopping in to say hello and taste some of the best donuts in town. @faithful_forker
This Birthday weekend we were on a Quest for Apple Fritters. All weekend we couldn't find one in Downtown San Diego, but our waitress Mia @intercontinentalsd recommended Donut Star, 601 W Washington St, San Diego. Hot out of the oven, so darn delicious. We may be spoiled for life. For those in LA, check out @dkdonuts. Used to be owned by this same wonderful family. Love supporting hardworking small businesses. Special note, many people sent us to the @donutbar. While the service was great, the donuts were pretty, but not amazing.
Donut Star is a cherished gem that perfectly encapsulates the essence of a childhood favorite donut shop. Every bite of their classic doughnuts is like a delicious time machine, transporting me back to fond memories of simpler times. The flavors are timeless, and every doughnut has a distinct, nostalgic charm that brings back happy memories. They offer orange, Ube, Pumpkin (seasonal) and all the other classic flavors. They offer a wide selection of traditional favorites. From glazed to chocolate-covered, from jelly-filled to maple bars, every option is a testament to the classic donut shop experience. The variety ensures that there’s something for everyone. The prices are reasonable, offering great value for high-quality doughnuts. The texture is crispy on the outside and a soft fluffy moist cake on the inside and the raised doughnuts are perfectly pillowy on the inside. The affordability makes it easy to indulge in these delicious treats regularly, which is a big part of their charm. It's a cornerstone of sweet, nostalgic joy. They have two locations and both are out of the way for me and both are worth the drive as this is my number one favorite spot for classic doughnuts in San Diego. Boutique donut shops are great to splurge at once in a while but Donut star is where my childhood memories are in each bite. For anyone seeking the timeless pleasure of classic doughnuts, Donut Star is the perfect destination. It’s a place where every bite brings back the magic of childhood, making it a beloved favorite for generations. It’s a classic hole in the wall donut shop that is 5 stars with every bite. They also offer seasonal donuts. One of my favorites is the pumpkin donut during the fall! I love love their glazed, orange, white chocolate with sprinkles, and the cinnamon crumb doughnuts!
Well, our son had a craving for donuts, and so while in the area, we found Donut Star. Don't let the humble surrounding deter you. The donuts here are really amazing!! I love this place like I love my own favorite donut spot. Bavarian cream, yesss! Taro with coconut, yayyy! My son is a fan of maple. The gob it on. 🤣😂🤣 So, my thoughts? Let's go!!!!
If your in mission hills , definitely stop in. Great donuts, coffee, and a variety of other drinks
I have been coming to Donut St🌟t for years. Absolutely The BEST Donuts in San Diego. Trust Me On this one. You’ll never be disappointed here. I’ve drove more miles than you think for my favorite and always Fresh Donuts! I always enjoy quality and have no problem doing what it takes. Thank you Kim the owner and the other ones who assist you. You like wonderful Donuts?? CHECK OUT DONUT ST🌟R They are centrally located in Hillcrest and just a few minutes from downtown San Diego. See you next time Kim! Ok Donut time🤩 Michael Always Giving BACK
If you find yourself in the Balboa Park Hillcrest area and want sweets or a cold refreshing drink out of the box, try Donut Star. An Asian ma and pa donut shoppe thats consistent.with quality, taste and drinks that are well priced and varied. No fancy" paying for rent" prices place but on a hot or cold day/night, hot cocoa to cold blended drinks will comfort the thirst and sweet tooth of all. I had a small (it was a large amount) Taro blended drink and it was good. If u never had Taro, its like light syruped pancake flavor .
For whatever reason I had the best apple fritter I've ever had in my life here. Completely unexpected!
Glad we found this place while in San Diego. It is a bit pricey, but for a one time stop for dessert, very good. We had nine items including the cinnamon roll, maple bacon fritter, and a couple specialty donuts (Reese’s peanut butter cup, gummy bear, and maple bacon stick). All were very good, but the apple fritter and old fashioned blueberry were superb. Worth the trip.
Called ahead on a busy Thursday morning for a mixed dozen box of donuts, $19, and was ready when I picked it up - great service and very efficient, the nice woman at the counter even gave some extra donuts, she must’ve been able to tell we had a busy day at work ahead! Plenty of parking and other breakfast and coffee options as well

Very friendly with a good sense of humor. These are possibly the best donuts I have ever had!
Went for the buttermilk doughnuts. Received excellent service from friendly staff. Doughnuts were delicious.
My favorite donut shop on San Diego. Wonderful family run business. Great donuts at affordable and reasonable prices.
I love this place! I don’t remember what they call the donut with chocolate filling and chocolate chips on top—but it was one of the best donuts I have ever had.
amazing service and the freshest donuts in the city!! will definitely be back

The Donut Star is a cute little spot. They have their own private parking lot and a couple of tables inside. They offer donuts, breakfast, sandwiches, coffee and more. They have a variety of different flavored donuts. There’s something for everyone! The price is not bad, I think it’s the standard price for donuts. The older man that works at the front was really nice and quite talkative. When I walked in it was as if I’ve known him for a long time! Very cool. The donuts tasted so fresh! Soft and moist you can easily eat two or three of them. Of course my go to flavor is always chocolate or maple but you can’t go wrong with a old fashioned donut! I also had one of their taro coconut donut, those two go together well. Loved it. You might ask di I try them all? Oh yes, I’m not afraid to try ‘em all! Can’t wait til the Next time I come to San Diego! This sure will be one of my stops!!!
This was my first time at Donut Star and I had a good experience. You can see the donuts we got in the picture. I feel like the service was pretty good. The donuts tasted fresh. There was a large variety of donuts to choose from which is always a plus. The chocolate bar was bland tasting, there needed to be more frosting and flavor. My wife also mentioned how she would have liked more icing on the glaze donut, but to me it was fine. My favorite was probably the Oreo one. It was delicious. If you want a wide variety of fresh tasting donuts definitely come here.
Good selection of donuts with a few speciality ones, a dozen donuts is $20
Did my wife and I need two donuts (each) for breakfast? No, but Donut Star made us happy that we decided to do it. Good cup of joe, tasty treats, no extra frills... Just the way we like it. Thank you for helping us make a great San Diego memory on our recent vacation!

If you have a dog be aware. I've been coming here for a while and it's never been an issue to have my dogs with me. Tonight i just stopped by and there was no one inside. I sat down to enjoy one donut and was told not to stay because of my dogs. They are well behaved and did not bark. They have tile floors and no items out, all are behind glass.
Life is worth sweets. Although eating a donut after a vigorous workout is counterproductive, Donut Star is worth it. Hey, I'll do an extra mile tomorrow. I love traditional donuts that are soft and moist in the inside and sweet to cure a one time craving. Donut Star even has fancy-fied donuts for those who need to have flair. My favorite is the original buttermilk, glaze twist and cinnamon roll. Yes, my donut taste is basic. But there is no oily residue or pastry sticking to the roof. These are my reasons I would recommend Donut Star: 1. Inexpensive 2. Donuts are fresh from am to late evening 3. Local business that serves with a neighborly spirit Move over Oreo, ice cold milk now has a new BFF.
