Tom Cat Express San Diego Reviews
Catalina Express was an enjoyable experience! The ferry is charming and runs several times a day from Long Beach to Catalina, accommodating just the right number of passengers. We opted for VIP seats to ensure a comfortable ride with great views. The waiting area was clean and easy to navigate, making the boarding process smooth. I highly recommend purchasing tickets in advance, as the ferries have limited capacity and can sell out quickly. Don’t wait—book as soon as you finalize your travel plans! The Long Beach port is also pleasant and straightforward to navigate. Once onboard, we headed to the VIP Commodore Lounge for our complimentary drink, and I enjoyed a delicious Bloody Mary. The ride itself was quite pleasant and went by quickly, taking about an hour. Before you know it, you'll find yourself arriving in beautiful Catalina!
I had a great experience with Catalina Express — check-in was quick and easy, and I arrived about 45 minutes before my trip to Avalon with no issues. They took care of my luggage right away, which made everything smoother, and onboard they offered good-priced, quality drinks and snacks. The crew gave clear emergency instructions before departure and were kind, patient, and very helpful throughout the entire trip. Overall, it was an awesome, smooth, and well-organized experience that I would definitely recommend to anyone heading to Avalon or Catalina Island.
My husband and I had our first trip to Catalina for our honeymoon almost a year ago. We spent a couple of days there. The island is beautiful. It feel like a getaway. When we went it wasn’t as busy; few spots were closed for the season. At Catalina Express; Parking was easy to find and they have many parking spots. Staff are very friendly. We decided to upgrade to the commodore lounge and they were very helpful. With this you get to board first and get a free snack and drink of choice. We decided to grab an alcoholic drink. We both enjoyed our time on the ride. The boat ride is smooth and relaxing. The boat is clean and seats are comfortable. Restroom are also clean. We are excited to go back in a couple of weeks for our ONE YEAR Anniversary!
Fast, comfortable, friendly service, and a smooth ride! For our anniversary, we went to Catalina Island, and we got there on the Catalina Express. This was my second visit to the island via the Catalina Express - it’s comfy, on time, and provides a smooth ride. The time I selected from Long Beach to Avalon didn’t have the Commodore Lounge, but that’s no big deal - like I said, the seats are comfortable! The time I selected on the way back had the Commodore Lounge, so I booked it for the first time, and loved it! It was the perfect way to end our trip to the island. Be sure to book your tickets in advance, as the ferries fill up. The ferry station is nice and spacious too. The staff on land and on the ferry was friendly and helpful. I look forward to returning to Avalon on the Catalina Express!!
Great experience on the Catalina Express! Parking was easy, lots of seats to wait, lines were efficiently split, the boat itself is really nice and quiet and smooth, the staff are very friendly, and we left almost on time (lol). My only complaint is that there is ZERO signage in Avalon for a Long Beach return. I don't understand this at all. I don't understand how the other ports have signage, but not Long Beach. We almost missed our return boat because of it.
We chose to celebrate a milestone birthday in day, 26 mile situated, Catalina island the ferry service was excellent, great parking. The ramp area, allowing for our date. Storage seating area was very comfortable. The Eagle and bison statues were very attractive, and boarding was very systematic. Luggage rules are implemented strictly very welcoming. They have 2 cabin services. One is ordinary and second is the Commodore private the only difference. Being, you have you get a complimentary drink? There are 2 levels over the base level. And it's nice, too. Enjoy the ride in the open air views. The serene waters serenity around clean toilets, very good experience. Enjoy the ride. Number of trips available, but you have to make a reservation in advance. Do r a fairy was almost l, half empty
For Father’s Day Weekend 2025, we chose to celebrate on the beautiful Catalina Island, a 26-mile boat ride (about an hour) from Long Beach, California. You can get to Catalina Island by boat or helicopter. If you’re taking the Catalina Island Express Ferry to Catalina Island, consider the Commodore Luxury Lounge. The added cost of priority boarding, luxury seating, and lounge access is worth it for your island trip. Passengers seeking a premium ferry experience can enjoy priority boarding, enhanced seating, and complimentary refreshments in Catalina Express’ Commodore Lounge. A select number of Catalina Express vessels provide this upgrade. Upon your 1 PM arrival on the island, a short walk (200ft) to the Golf Cart Island Rentals shack. allows you to rent a golf cart with an island map for a self-guided tour at a cost of $60/hr, cash only.
The trip to Catalina Island on the ferry is very relaxing. If you are traveling back very late and want to be in the top seats, keep in mind that on the high seas, the temperatures are very cold, and the sea breeze will blow down. And the cold is really Titanic-like. If you follow your boarding code, you can take a seat faster. The car park is in front of the departure point.
We had a fantastic experience with Catalina Express in Long Beach! The parking garage is conveniently located right next to the check-in area, and there were plenty of signs and friendly staff to guide us from the start. Boarding was smooth, and the team both to & from Avalon was professional, helpful, and welcoming. The ride itself was super smooth with beautiful views the entire way. (70 mins to be exact) And very punctual! We upgraded to the Commodore Lounge, which was clean, quiet, and comfortable—just note that group seating is limited, as only a few chairs face each other with a table. The captain was great, clearly knowledgeable, and easy to understand over the PA system. It was a great value overall, and if you're lucky, you might even spot some dolphins swimming alongside the boat! Just be sure to dress in layers—on our return trip, the boat was full and some folks had to sit outside, where it was chilly and a bit wet from ocean spray. Highly recommend Catalina Express for a smooth, scenic, and professional ride over to the island!
Took the Catalina Express and was really pleased with the experience! Great price, runs on schedule, and gets you to the island in about an hour. The ride was smooth and comfortable — even if you’re prone to motion sickness, no worries, the boat barely rocks and feels very stable. There are plenty of restrooms onboard and even a bar, which is a nice touch. The only downside is that people tend to leave empty seats between each other, so if you’re traveling with kids, you might have to split them up around the boat just to find safe spots for everyone. Other than that, highly recommend it!
It’s was so relaxing. I enjoyed the boat ride to the island. There lots of places for eating and shopping. I enjoyed our air BNB. The view was incredible looking over the auction and seeing the beautiful animals I was able to see even a dolphin as we were riding to the hour. That was amazing..
This ferry is how we got from Long Beach to Catalina for Christmas Day. It was a rough ride over there because of the massive storms they were having there as we were having here in Reno. \nA few of …
We upgraded to the Commodore Lounge and honestly...do it. Totally worth the extra money.\n\nPriority boarding alone was a win, but the enclosed upper deck seating made the whole ride feel calm and co…

My wife and I took the 9:50AM ferry to Avalon, Catalina Island on a Friday, returning on the 15:50PM ferry to Long Beach, paying $167 RT for 2 seniors in standard class. The entire process of lining …
We took a day trip and had a great experience using Catalina Express. We didn't really know much about Catalina when we originally booked so we only booked tickets to be there half a day. Due to fog …
The ferry does exactly what it is supposed to do, it gets you there. Tickets are pricey though, and do not even think about changing your ticket time unless you want to cough up extra cash. Staff on board were nice, no complaints there. The real knocks for me are the cost and the circus of people on the ferry. About twenty minutes before docking, it turns into a nut-to-butt crowd of passengers fighting to be the first ones off. Relax folks, you are only saving maybe five minutes at best. So I sit patiently while everyone else is standing around me like sardines, and it happened both going and coming back. On the way back, after a full day of sun, sand, and saltwater, let’s just say the smells were less than pleasant. Snacks and drinks are available, but like everything else on board, they are expensive. Overall, solid way to get to Catalina, just be ready to pay for it and bring your patience.
Catalina Express is pretty much the only way to get to Catalina aside from a helicopter. They operate routes out of a few ports, but I've only used Long Beach. Parking here is $25 a day directly ac…
Ferry will get you there, but they pack you in like sardines. Slow to load slow to disembark. Build in an extra 45 mins from arrival time to the time you get off the boat. Interior rooms need a serious cleaning— smells like a hockey locker room inside. But the boat itself handled 5-6 foot swells without issue, so a sturdy ride.
