Such a wonderful dinner! The service, drinks and Pre fixe menu was outstanding, it allowed us to try everything on the menu. They allowed us to have dessert in the social club, which was very kind and a nice change of pace. We celebrated my friends birthday and they made it so special. They were able to accommodate one person in our party being a vegetarian as well. I can’t recommend this place enough!

I love this place. I started with an extra dirty martini done exactly how I like it. I also had the caprese the cocktail with the clarified milk…was like I was having fresh tomato and basil right out of a garden! Incredible. I had the soft egg. I had the pasta. So rich and delicious. Also, the bread and the butter are over the top. always a good way to tell how great a place is… …and it is so beautiful and sexy. Especially if you start in the front and then go to the back for more drinks after you eat. Music was great and we met some really good people, hanging out dinner.

Incredible experience and did not disappoint! We got a little bit of everything and it was all great. I wish I remembered the names of the dishes, but everything was 10/10. The pasta was incredible and so were the drinks. Staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes as well. They discourage phone use but I did sneak this picture of one of the dishes. We will definitely be back!

Was visiting SF and found this spot on social media. It was fairly new, but was very intrigued by the Japanese/Italian cuisine and it did Not disappoint. The food and the whole experience was great! Def try it!

I had my first date here with a vegetarian! We loved it here. We loved our server David. We loved listening to the DJ and loved every dish! Thank you so much for having us!!

We had a great meal at ama! Chose the $120 tasting menu, which offers great selection with more than 10 dishes. We thought that'd be way too much food, but turns out almost all of them are only a single bite. Was still plenty to feel satisfied though, especially as we separately ordered the bread + soft egg - and honestly those two may have been the standout dishes! SO good, highly recommend getting them both, and dipping the bread into the soft egg as our server recommended. Service was nice but still clearly working out some kinks. The staff delivering food to our table forgot key details about the dishes several times, which I don't really care about but clashes with the upscale vibe they are going for. Other small things like not cleaning crumbs / food bits off the table weren't enough to detract from the overall positive experience.

Excellent food and a stunningly beautiful space. The ceiling is incredibly high for this place as they continue to establish themselves in the downtown scene. Loved the carpaccio, the soft egg, and the steak selection. Can’t wait to eat my way through the menu!

Visited for drinks on a Saturday night. The creativity and quality of them is on par with NYC lounges. Phenomenal atmosphere and friendly, attentive service. I loved the conversation focused style of the lounge area and the limitations on phone usage. I look forward to coming back. Edit: They charged me a 119% tip in error, but refunded it promptly once I called them.

ama by Brad Kilgore is a total gem — intimate, glowing, and full of personality. The food is stunning — Italian at heart, elevated with Japanese precision and California ingredients. Every bite (and every cocktail) feels creative but effortless. The Soft Egg and bread service are unreal — loved the Lumache and giant meatball 💯 The vibe is the real showstopper — moody lighting, a copper bar that glows like it’s alive, and a soundtrack that makes you want to stay all night. And the ama Social Club in the back? 1970s seduction — pinball, DJs, martinis, and late-night energy SF has been missing. Finally, a restaurant that reminds you this city still knows how to have fun. I’ll be back!

Now that I am back in SF regularly…I am so happy that ama is on the scene. It’s really a unique and needed place for the city. The food and the cocktails are truly incredibly good…from how they’ve been imagined to how they’re presented and most importantly how they taste. But what I think matters equally as much is the whole experience that the food and drink is tied into…the way that the spaces at ama have been designed (the bar area in the front and the private lounge in the back) and how they are being programmed to create the full end to end experience. They’ve made it so that you come for drinks or food and then you don’t want to leave…both times I’ve been, I was supposed to be somewhere after, and instead had my friends come join me at ama to make a night of it. Even though I’ve turned it into my whole night both times, I do think that it’s also a great place to start or end the night at. I look forward to being at ama the next time I’m in the city, so I can continue working my way through the menu. Thank you!!

Wow, what an incredible experience. The amount of thought and detail that was gone into every corner of this place is impressive. The combination of flavors is unlike anything I’ve had, this concept stands out in a city full of great restaurants. I will be telling everyone, and I cannot wait to return.

One of the most beautiful places in San Francisco, the Red Velvet interior decor matching the James Turrell lighting brings a dash of peak sophistication and elegance. The espresso martini is divine.

ama apparently changed their menu, as this was a vastly superior experience. Set menu is a solid value and well portioned. Small bites excelled. Sauces can be a little overpowering and salty; used sparingly. Wish I tried more of the cocktail list. The cilantro ume was delightful to start. The house negroni had a heavy (tea? Didn't read) flavor that was odd by itself but paired perfectly with the dessert. The tables are exceedingly close together in the bar. Expect no privacy and waiter face.

Loved everything about this place except for the offputting attitude from some of the staff/hostesses. Great food, ambiance and music but was immediately told not to take photos, despite hearing about this place opening via social media where people were clearly filming casually. Barked at by the hostess in a weird tone, basically reprimanded with no context about how some people have permission and others don’t. Then was told photos are okay in certain areas. Then it became a free-for-all and anyone could take photos anywhere. Regardless we indulged in almost all the dishes, dessert, wine and cocktails and will most likely return. Hopefully their staff becomes a little more welcoming to brand new guests and figures out their rules regarding the curation of the space a little more cohesively, first impressions matter to guests!

Food was edible but not memorable, atmosphere was gorgeous, although there was a private party in the back room so we didn’t get to experience the lounge/bar area. The reason for the mid-range review is due to the service. Food served at different times (there were only 2 of us), missing silverware, felt invisible even though there were only 1-2 other tables being served. I’d go back, but only for a drink to enjoy the design.

Honestly not worth the price, especially in a city like SF with so many great options! The vibe/atmosphere was very cool, but that’s was really the only redeeming quality of this restaurant. The food was mid (and very overpriced - $40 for a meatball?!), wagyu was far too salty, and the mushroom side dish was unappealing with a strange texture. The service was below expectations too: carbonated water was flat, the waiter put in the wrong steak (husband received the ribeye but ordered the flat iron - thankfully we weren’t charged more), and the server was clearly confused at multiple points during the meal (she seemed sweet but inexperienced for a restaurant of this purported caliber). Save your money and go somewhere else.

The epitome of style over substance. They clearly invested a lot in the design, gave it a loungy vibe. But past the entrance and the fancy dining room, what stroke me first was that there are more waiters than there are customers. The concept is japanese-italien fusion, but it's mostly Italian. Throwing Yuzu on a spaghetti plate doesn't make a Japanese dish, charging 75$ for a lobster pasta with no lobster and undercooked pastas doesn't make it Italian. And supreme Italian crime, using mushroom paste to make a mushroom sauce. Overall, I will say stay away, there is nothing memorable to eat, nothing appealing on the menu, and no chef in the kitchen.

Update 11/03: I decided to check on this restaurant again after a few weeks and found that they had created a new listing (this one). Considering they moved the opening hours and full name of the restaurant to this one, it appears they are trying to escape their previous negative reviews. The original listing had only 3.7 stars at the time of writing. My original review was 2 stars, but after seeing this, I am revising it to 1 star. Below is my original review: Michelin star pricing ($150/pp) for dishes that were hit or miss and for a restaurant that just opened. Despite the copper room photos making it look small and intimate, you regret your choice once you get crammed between other tables and get to listen to other conversations against your will. For similar prices in SF, you can go to an established Michelin star restaurant without feeling claustrophobic. Some dishes were good, such as the risotto and the dessert, but others, such as the mushrooms, left much to be desired and taste like they could be made at home. On the brighter side, our server was nice, but they clearly need additional staff as the service speed was slow at times.
