China Chen San Jose Reviews
Highly recommended! Super legit place. Shout out to my colleague (Howard) for letting me know about this place. I come here for a nice, steaming bowl of noodles. A hidden gem in downtown SJ. Their soup is not laced with MSG.
I always take my son here for the noodles and chicken—it’s his favorite. He actually finishes his food every time, which says a lot compared to other places nearby. The noodles are tasty, the soup is comforting, and the food is consistently good. Definitely a spot we keep coming back to.
Came by on a cold Sunday morning for some noodle soup, and it sure hit the spot. Forgot what number I ordered, but it came with a thick wide noodle, with some chewy fried fish ball, some good beef balls, a plum shrimp, and a tender kidney. Oh they also came with some calamri, but the calamri did not had much flavor so I had to dip them in a mix of vinegar, soy, hoisin, and chili sauce. The broth had the right amount of salt, and sweetness, no additional sauced was needed, but I like to added some lime to live it up a bit. The noodle soup also came with some bean sprout, and lettuce. I also ordered a side of fry shrimp chip, which was also nice to enjoy. The large bowl of noodle soup with the side of shrimp chip came around $18 with a side of hot tea. Very good meal, would come back for sure.
Good food a short walk from the convention center. Service and cooking was quick. The wontons are extremely substantial! The shrimp pieces are huge. You can also see people making the wontons when you come in. Prices and portions are good, definitely cheaper than hotel food. The small bowl size is more than enough for a lunch. I’d definitely consider coming back if I’m in the area.
UPDATE: Still delicious and our go-to at least once a week. Cannot LOVE this place enough. Small, quaint, family-run little hole in the wall. An absolute hidden gem. Had the shrimp wonton noodle soup and it was exactly what I needed on this rainy day. Parking available on the street. Looking forward trying other items on their menu.
We were specifically looking for some noodle soup and came to China Chen on a reddit recommendation and we were not disappointed! The soup broth is so flavorful, the shrimp wontons have entire shrimp in them! noodles were perfect, table condiment selection was excellent (this is important imho) and the vibes are pristine. highly recommend!
Looking for fresh fresh Vietnamese egg noodles called Mi? This is the spot!! This was so good I can’t stop thinking about it! Got 2 bowls of mi, one with broth on the side and one with shrimp wontons, an order of shrimp wontons which were the best I’ve ever had-fried to perfection & stuffed w tons of shrimp! Also got the half fried chicken which was beyond crispy and juicy!! The flour rice pancake was delicious as well. Overall, such a great place, we will be back!
Tried out this place for the first time out of curiosity. Got the Hu Tieu Bo Vien and it was pretty good. Service was very quick and the waiters were pretty nice, although they look very busy. Overall pretty good, might come again next time
Delicious noodle soup. Large shrimp wonton.
Really loved the simple and comforting egg noodle soup with pork and wontons. The fried wontons were super flavorful. The egg noodles were also perfectly firm and chewy.
I had to stop by to get some lunch and this place was closest due to traveling from business. This place is great! Order noodle soup with half fried chicken! It was delicious and very tasty and just right combination to my stomach! Definitely would come back on my next business trip to San Francisco area!
Nice food for our lunch, we have great food all times. Actually I love Chinese food therefore I am so excited and acknowledge about it! I always use my time to eat there with my friends with many choices. But the big problems that we have here to being parking because they have no parking. You have to park on the stress with 5-6 space only with charged $2 for 1 hour. One more about the place, it is on the corner of 3th stress and E San Salvador, so there are many students who always like me stop by to get food for lunch and dinner. Customers from city hall is big deal to talk about, so if try to stop by you should get there soon don’t wait until 12pm to be there. You will get no tables and you will wait next your turn! :))
One of my favorite place to eat. I would give it 4 and 1/2 stars. Parking can be a challenge. Linh’s highly recommended 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Clean. Fair pricing. Very polite staff. Fast service. Delicious food quality. Good portions. Easy to find. Decent parking areas nearby. Love their #10 noodle soup.

Prices were great and food was very flavorful! I got the small wonton soup and the banh bot chien trung. Both were good, but the wonton soup was the star! Will definitely try the wonton noodle soup next time.

Came here for a late lunch with a friend and I have to say that I actually really enjoyed the food. Got #34 and the flour cake, both of which were really good. ~~Parking: There’s only metered street parking available ($2 per hour), but be careful not to park in the residential area that requires a permit. ~~Service: Prompt. They were fast to seat us, keeping an eye on us to know when we wanted to place our order and they were very kind when I paid the bill and asked for a to go box. ~~Best Part: The food. Honestly it tasted better than I was expecting. I was expecting a plain broth when I got the #34 order, but man it was packed with flavor! ~~Worst Part: Parking, but luckily I just had to make a couple of rounds. I think normally it’s fine but there were a lot of spots that were marked with a tow away sign. ~~Tips: Bring quarters to pay for the metered parking, but they do accept credit card as payment! ~~Return: Definitely would if I was in the area.
Banh Bot Chien Trung is my favorite here. The place stays the same for years. Shrimp wonton soup is ok, a bit salty to me. Fried shrimp wonton is good too.
It is hard for me to rate them 4 star. All of their ingredients from noodle, pork bone broth, fish ball,.beef balls, are all fresh and delicious. And the food is very nice. However, I ordered a hu tieu nam vang (Cambodian noodle), soup aside, but the noodles didn't come out as original one, it does not have the minced pork sauce that I often get with Hu Tieu Nam Vang. Beyond that, the noodles and soup are great. So that is just my personal expectation with a specific dish. The waiter and cashier is very attentive and quick.
Absolutely delicious soups, with fresh noodles that are worth eating. The flavors are deep yet not overwhelming. The story behind the restaurant’s origin is both encouraging and endearing.

normally a huge fan of this place. went in today and it wasn't too busy. our waitress with the glasses seated us and completely forgot about us. i had to go and ask her to take our order to earn their business. normally im not picky, but to be seated and completely ignored (as she was just standing at the front doing nothing) for a good 10 minutes ticks you. food quality also has gone down and it's not because of this experience today.
