Okayama San Jose Reviews
My boyfriend’s favorite Japanese spot and I see it’s for a good reason! Cute little place that has plenty of decorations such as funkos. The waiting area was a little small but we were seated pretty quickly. Everything from the food to the service was nice. Our server was a nice young lady who recommended some good tasting dishes. Ultimately made our stay worth it. Great area as well.
I recently visited and was pleasantly surprised by the playful twist on Japanese cuisine. From the moment we walked in, the quirky decor caught my attention, with comic and superhero-themed decorations adding a unique charm to the atmosphere. We started off with a few appetizers: The shrimp tempura was perfectly crispy and light, served with a classic dipping sauce. The fried Calamari was thick-cut, golden brown, and satisfying unexpectedly good for a sushi spot! Next up was one of their creative sushi specialties. We tried crunch toll with crunchy tempura flakes. It had an intense umami flavor and a rich texture definitely something for fans of bold, fusion-style rolls. They also have an extensive roll menu with a big variety for everyone. Service was friendly and quick, and we were especially touched when the chef surprised us with a free salmon roll as a kind gesture. It was fresh, buttery, and absolutely delicious thank you, Chef!
It is legitimately one of the best sushi restaurants in town. The fish is very fresh, the service is great and the selection is amazing. It also helps that they have a whole star wars specialty roll selection that is full of amazing combinations of food to create the different rolls. I got the Luke Skywalker (see photo), and it was delicious. Located in Japan town in San Jose, there are plenty of options of this nature close by, but they are easily better than their competition. Check them out. You will not be disappointed.
It’s a cozy restaurant with amazing food. The taste was pretty much authentic, and they do have their own specialty. Dishes such as Lobster Special Rolls are not what you could find in just any sushi restaurant. The staff were patient and quick with their service. The restaurant itself was decorated cozily, and they had an amazing collection of figurines to greet customers :)
If you're not a fan of traditional Japanese cuisine and lean towards Americanized or Korean/Chinese-influenced Japanese dishes, Okayama might not be your top choice. However, if you're seeking a more authentic Japanese experience, this restaurant delivers. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted with a warm smile. The attentive and polite service, along with the aroma reminiscent of a Japanese home kitchen, set the tone. Okayama stands out with thick sushi slices, a departure from neighboring establishments. The classic Japanese home-style cooking impressed us, and the portions and prices were reasonable. Although slightly off the main street, free parking at the back and side street adds convenience. For a reasonably priced fish-centric dinner for three in San Jose, Okayama is worth trying. Our diverse selection, including Philadelphia, Golden California, Summer Smoothies (Mango), Shrimp Tempura R, Dynamite Roll, Dragon Roll, Crunch Roll, Tempura Mix Appetizer, and Iced Tea, was both delicious and a good value.
The place is clean and the atmosphere is vibrant. I like their decorations and their delicious food! The spicy pork ramen was tasty, the pork was thick and tender. The broth was well made, and the noodles are good as well. The California is a regular cali roll. You can’t go wrong with it. The deep fried crab meat that goes with the juice from the sliced orange was well balanced. You wouldn’t want to miss out this dish when you come here!
I have found me a go to spot for my sushi cravings. 🍣 and 🍱 The two sides/three sides bento is outstanding. All options so yummy 🤤 - (we tried almost all of them btw) the variety of rolls with some Star Wars reference outta this world! Service was great, order came fast, food is yummy (got sake and Sapporo as well) well what else would i ask for. Had a wonderful lunch date with the wifey. Thank you Okayama 🙏🏾
This was a nice surprise for me. I was looking for a place to have a quiet and light lunch and it definitely exceeded my expectations, from the host's treatment, the atmosphere of the place, its cleanliness, speed of service, and taste of the food. I know the photographs don't do the dishes much justice, but trust me, the flavor, consistency, and freshness are there. Their menu is very wide and varied (many vegetarian options!) I had: - Vegetable tempura - Special Vegi roll (shitake mushroom, cucumber, asparagus, yamagobo) - Crack me Up Roll (deep-fried spicy tuna roll on top with house sauce and tokikko) Give this place a try, I promise you won't regret it.
Pretty decent sushi, but very American. I had the broiled Saba, which was very good with the shioyaki. The skin was very crispy and the flavor was just right. Oddly enough, the Saba came out before the rolls did. Overall the rolls were interesting as they have a star wars section of their menu. The overall atmosphere of the place is very laid back, which is comfortable to be in. Service is pretty quick and the people are nice.
Fantastic staff. Extremely kind and helpful. I had a lovely time. The waitrer was kind in giving me honest recommendations on food. I asked for the Uni Don and he suggested other options. He was right, lol. There’s a reason an “Uni don” isn’t a big thing in other places. It’s not as tasty as it sounds. Maybe I’ll take the waiters advice next time! The atmosphere was lovely though. It’s the perfect place to take your friends. I’ll definitely come back and try their other food.
We came in for dinner on Monday night around 5 pm and were seated right away, which was nice—but it took a while before anyone came to take our order. The host who sat us left, and we had to ask someone in the back to help us out. The initial person who took our order seemed unfamiliar with the menu (couldn’t tell us which sushi had the most unagi). We finally had someone come to our table to verify, our order was correct. She was friendly and did apologize for the delay. She even gave us a free order of dumplings, which was a thoughtful gesture. We ordered two bento boxes: - Fried scallops + galbi: scallops were tiny, but the short ribs were solid. - Tempura + grilled saba: saba was perfectly cooked, but the tempura veggies (especially the carrot and sweet potato) were sliced too thick and didn’t fry through properly. I also got a sushi roll that didn’t even have unagi, even though that’s what I asked for. I didn’t bother sending it back—it would’ve taken too long to fix, so I just ate it. To top it off, the miso soup and salad came after the bento boxes were served. Service was super slow—only the solo person working the floor. Other tables were waiting to order or pay, and it felt like the whole place was understaffed. I asked the server if she was getting help, and she just smiled and kept going. Food had some highlights, but the overall experience was pretty uneven. Might give it another shot if they improve staffing and training.
We ordered two bento boxes and the food was okay. The Tonkatsu needed to be more moist, salad was good, miso soup was too sweet, sashimi was good, and galbi was okay. They have lunch hour everyday until 4pm, and the bentos come at a discounted price. In terms of service, I think they could check on the customers more often after serving the food. Also I wish they were friendlier and it would be nice to hear some recommendations. Lastly, the restaurant has free parking available in the back lot, in case you dont want to pay for street parking.
The sushi is mediocre. We ordered the Sushi Combo. The rice was cold. The nigiri pieces were too big to fit comfortably in a woman's mouth. The California roll was not properly rolled and was falling apart. They offered us a complimentary miso soup and lettuce with some sort of ranch. I'm not coming back.
Disappointed would be an understatement. I have ordered from here a few times. And I get they are busy and people make mistakes. But the measure of business and staff is how you handle those mistakes when they are brought to your attention. The staff is very crass and short tempered, they don’t fix their mistakes they double down and yell and act like the English isn’t so good. Today was the last time. And the last mistake. It’s really sad when you spend your hard earned money on food and you don’t get the food you paid for. But you get plenty of attitude and a supreme lack of accountability.
The hotate nigiri was terribly smelly. The servers response was “you can eat some ginger” in a sarcastic manner when I expressed my concerns about the quality of the food. I don’t understand how the server would give such a comment when the customer suspects the food has gone bad, especially if it’s raw fish. I still tipped 18%. Don’t try to attack me about being cheap this is not about money.
This place really stood out as being unique. The service was terrible, the servers acted like they were so annoyed that people wanted eat there. The food was the worst Japanese food that we had ever had, which is really saying a lot. Even their agadoshi tofu was just deep fried in this crazy thick batter. I ordered tofu with veggies and got a huge, I mean huge, bowl that was just like brown liquid cornstarch with about four pieces of tofu in it and a random vegetables, I've never seen anything like it before. And it had no taste and hardly any actual substance. The salad came in a to go container and the dressing was so terrible, that I could not eat it. Your time and money is valuable so I would recommend seeking out other Japanese restaurants to eat at, I'm sure that there are a lot in the area that are amazing.
The rolls here were sloppy and unsatisfying. So poorly created, they were falling apart on the plate. The fish on top of the rolls were uneven and chopped blindly, same with the garnish. One of the rolls we ordered, the Hawaiian, was swimming in the sauce. The rolls did not taste fresh either. For a $$, and given how limited the menu selection is, this place is very disappointing. As much as I want to support a small business, I can't recommend this place sadly.
