Their standard dish, khao mun gai (the most popular variant of Hainan chicken developed in Thailand) is delicious. The boiled chicken paired with their sauce and the complimentary hot sauces are incredible. My friend who is more familiar with this dish said it isn't the best they've had, but still it's quite good. For my hainan chicken-inexperienced self, I think my take on this restaurant likely stems from the combination of my newfound affinity for the dish and the fact that they also happen to do a solid job of preparing it. I get extra veggies, which amounts to a pile of broccoli in addition to your chicken, rice, cucumber, and soup.

Oh man. The day someone mentioned this to me, I went here three times in one week. Not sure if it's just because it's something different or because it's that good. Their sauce is really good and the poached eggs to go with it. Too good. I'm coming back!

What a fantastic place. High quality. Chicken is so tender and tasty. Dining area is neat and clean. Very comfortable. Best of all, fair prices, a true value. I'll be back.

Rooster & Rice is the bessst! I can’t believe people would complain that this replaced chicken’n’rice, why take a lower quality knock off over the OG SF restaurant? The flavor is by far unrivaled by any other khao man gai in the bay So happy they’re here!!

Tasty and healthy meals. Decent portion in my opinion. The chicken broth is so nice, definitely a big plus. I will keep coming back to this place.

Hainan chicken! 🐔 I wanted to try this restaurant before, and finally got the chance due to Yelp event. Fried Chichen skin is special and delicious here. HIGHLIGHT was the Thai sause for Hainan chicken rice. The staff are really nice and friendly.

Decent chicken rice spot when you want something quick but higher quality. I can see this place as a weekday healthy-ish lunch spot. The #1 plate is their most popular and probably the first timers choice. The white meat wasn’t terribly dry...but noticeably drier than the dark and I found myself pushing those pieces off to the side. Wish they offered the choice of all dark meat. The broth that comes with the meal was light and pleasant, complementing the meal. The sauce was tangy and adds acidity to the chicken. I believe this place serves thai style chicken rice but I definitely still prefer the ginger scallion sauce of Hainan chicken rice. The rice was pretty flavorful, but there was definitely too much of it. I don’t think I even managed to finish half before finishing the chicken.

This is one of the best healthy lunch choice in the area. I had the vegetarian last time, while my friend had the Paleo with breast meat. Both were simple and delicious, especially with the got sauces. A great, reasonably priced lunch option. Will be back

Stopped by as I was in the area and never heard of it. Got the original: which has breast and thigh meat. (There are other options with just breast or a choice) It comes with a chicken broth, which is probably what the chicken is also boiled in for cooking. Rather bland flavor aside from a spicy sauce that comes with the dish. Nothing special, but a definite comfort food. Food came quickly, 0complaints

Been wanting to come here for awhile, and finally made it to this side of town! Something so simple turned out soooo yummy! I ended up getting the Combo with The Original and Chicken Skins. Next time, I'll just stick to The Original ala carte. The chicken skins were just ok, some pieces were stale. Don't be fooled though when you start working on your Chicken Plate - it looks a little on the small side, but it fills you up!! I like to pour some of the KMG Sauce (crack sauce) over the whole plate, then add some of the Ginger Sauce to each bite. Even the breast pieces of the chicken were juicy! I could probably eat this every day haha.

I wanted something similar to hainan chicken and ran into this and it hit the spot perfectly!

Very simple boiled chicken and rice that is simple and healthy. -1 one star for no air conditioning and being sweltering hot.

Pros: Really great place! It’s definitely a great healthy option. Can I make this at home on the cheap? Absolutely... But I’m not going to cause it’s soo good and convenient here. I’m willing to pay $15 + for some chicken, rice, veggies, soup, and that bomb sauce. Con: Came here EXACTLY at 11:00 AM 12/08/2019, lady said not until 11:30 AM. Definitely made me a little hangry.

As of 2022: It's back to normal. Updating - the food is delish. BUT I don't really care for their sauce. They do offer ginger and garlic olio for extra - I like that one more, but I think I get a little gas from it ? If only they have more sauce offerings, it could even be better. 2020: It would be nice if the owners take ownership of this listing as it keeps saying it's open incorrectly. It's still CLOSED from the COVID19 when I last drove by around April 22nd. I've been sending my business to Sizzling Lunch across the street (no association to me). I will update when they finally do open.

We decided to try this place out because it was recommended by one of my fiance's co workers and we loved it. The thai sauce and chicken is delicious and the rice is made with chicken broth and extra added flavor!

Tasty chicken. Nice place. Not much to complain about. You get exactly what it says. Chicken and rice, oh and some slice of cucumber. Everything else sold separate

I tried the bahn mi sandwitch with lemongrass pork. The sandwitch was decent, what would have make it better for me was better bread and some more sauce on the sandwitch.

Chicken and rice were ok. Sauce was good. But the overall experience ....mah/mah. There are about 3 restaurants in the strip mall with chicken/rooster in their name and about four others that serve chicken dishes. With a limited menu of only chicken I guess I expected more. Due to Covid (10/2020) you have to eat outside and in a San Jose strip mall on a warm afternoon that is brutal. It doesn't help that your view is a vast parking lot of cars, with the horns and the racing. Because this is a strip mall there are no deliveries in the back so a food service semi-truck pulls right up to the tables with engine and refrigerator motor blasting. Lastly the service was sub par and the app expects you to tip 15% on top of 10% sales tax just to take the prepared fast food, put it in a bag and put it on the counter. Not really tippable service.

Probably one of the few places around does not need to wait at all, which makes it the togo place when I am in Vally Fair. Btw, my girlfriend like the poke bowl just around the corner. Overall the food is OK, not the best chicken rice I have got but it’s very simple and healthy; there’s always some appetite for some chicken and rice when one is hungry, at least for me.

The guy who took my order was super nice & fast but the food portion “Chicken” was very skimp for $16.00 I had to make additional sides to go with my meal. Ive seen other photos where people got a hefty portion of chicken but I did not. Sauce was good!

Given this place specializes in chicken and rice, I was expecting the chicken to be tender and moist, and the rice to be flavorful, but neither were true. The place is a typical location in a shopping center but modern looking but fairly sparse decor. The food is adequate but just nothing to write home about. The service is not rude but not friendly. This is an OK place if not much else to choose but within the shopping center, there are plenty of other good options.

Food is visually very unappealing. Basically boiled chicken served with sauce. But it tastes a lot better than it looks.

Chicken and rice are dry. “Chicken meets rice” in Santa Clara is the best where broth is free and unlimited.

Staff said it'd be a 10-15 minute wait. 30 minutes later, nothing. I asked for a refund, and they were able to issue it *without the tip back*. The staff person remarked, "Well, you could have waited for your order." So I just paid for terrible service? I'll be calling my bank to get the remainder back. Edit: Two days later I was able to go through my bank to get a full refund. A representative of the business eventually reached out to offer apologies, a certificate and that they were looking into the situation. I felt I was able to convey my grievances about the situation to them properly. I've updated the star rating to reflect they've reached out and provided a resolution, but it's still unknown if the feedback will lead to revised employee practices around how they should handle beyond-longer-than-stated-wait-times and partial refunds.

The food was decent but its definitely not the best value. There was an additional $2 for “vegetables” but all I received was a cup of unflavored, steamed broccoli. I could have walked across the parking lot and bought my own broccoli from Sprouts.

The menu is very simple. Not too many choices. All you get is a mixture of Chicken and Rice with different sauces. They don't have an ice machine so I had to drink my soda semi semi-cool but it was not cold and that ruined my meal. I would have given them 4 stars if they had an ice machine but the lack of satisfaction with having to drink my soda without ice absolutely ruined my meal.

I always hesitate to eat here because it's a dish I know how to make well. The food here is pretty good, but the few times I've come, there's always something wrong with my order. Today I ordered their original and added on an egg, broth, and extra chicken. My order ended up having chicken with no skin on it, and two broths instead of a broth and extra chicken. It was disappointing and upsetting considering they didn't seem all that busy, and they still managed to mess it up, and I ended up over-paying for what I ended up getting. TL;DR Food is decent but is too expensive for what you're getting. They get their orders wrong a lot too.

**ALWAYS CHECK YOUR ORDERS** Usually this spot is good, and on point. But this time around wasn’t the case. I order a #1, w/ an egg ($2 upgrade). Took it to go, when I got to my office, I opened it and there was no egg. I called, they said they can’t do anything about it; I can come back and get the egg... I’m not gonna do that cause I’m already at work. So the guy on the phone offered 50% off the next time I visited.

Not sure why this place has such good reviews. Food is completely plain and flavorless. maybe if you on a some kind of a steamed-food-only diet it is good, but not for your regular eater. Just disappointed.

Sooo i've eaten here a few times and it's usually pretty yummy but tonight I got some togo and open my soup up at home to this... I tossed everything :|

Rude unprofessional cashier rolling her ugly eyes cause we wanted to eat inside. She also had what appears to be her daughter sleeping on the chairs. After taking our orders, she went back to the dining area to sit and play on her phone. Besides the terrible service, the food was OK. Definitely not a 4 star. It's like a 1.5 star. Rice had no flavor. Broth was VERY oily. Chicken was over cooked and tastes plain.

I am very very disappointed at this place! I ordered online, they did not even out any sauce in there for me which is the key for their chicken and also I paid extra dollars for adding tofu, they did not give to me either. I called them, nobody answers and they already closed at 6. So I could eat my dinner fresh, I have to save them in the fridge! This is the first time I bought there, probably will be the last time too! Very very upset!

I ordered a cutlet and original for the delivery. They charged me for everything except they didn't give me the cutlet. Scammers

I always got my food delivered. Just happen to pick up my order today. Food is good, but the cashier is not wearing a mask. Not sure about the cook in the kitchen. :(

Made a few orders of the original with jasmine rice and paid. Was told they ran out of jasmine rice after the fact. If i really wanted it I had to wait a hour. Food was ok.

Tried to order by phone, "you have to order on website". Got a question, "all information are on the website". Well, no thank you. I will never go and i will be sure to spread your arrogant message to friends.

The food is ok but they got my order wrong. I placed an order with two eggs and extra veggies but I didn’t see them. Also, the price is not cheap.
