Liuyishou Hotpot San Mateo Reviews
Very good Chongqing hot pot. It’s a great place to spend dinner time with family, friends or colleagues. The seating areas are spacious. The staff are quick and attentive, but some of them only speak Mandarin, so don’t be surprised or upset if they can’t understand you. They will find another waiter who speaks English to get back to you. They have a fruit, snack and sauce bar where you can help yourself if you pay $3.5 per person. The food is very delicious, especially the broth base. We ordered different broths each time. My favorite is mushroom broth, my husband loves the chicken broth while my sister adores the spicy one. As I said, this is Chongqing hot pot, so the level of spiciness is crazy. We ordered their medium spicy once, and can’t finish the meal because we drank 3 glasses of water. If you can’t handle spicy food, don’t try it.
This hot pot place exceeded my expectations! What blew me away more was their amazing lunch deal! They have hot pot combos for one that are under $20! You get your own personalized pot, a plate of meat, a 9 compartment box of veggies and other sides for the hot pot, along with a bowl of rice. It's the perfect amount, especially at lunch time. We came for dinner, but couldn't help to share that information because that's too good of a deal. We HAD to order the "ring of meat" only because it looked cool for a photo, but it turned out to be a good choice. It was actually half beef and half lamb, which was plentiful on its own. Quality here is great and I loved their DIY sauce bar which also offered small appetizers and fruit. If you love hot pot, definitely add this to your bookmarks. What we ordered: * Liu's Beef & Lamb Platter (the "ring of meat") * Seafood Platter * Hand-made Noodles
Amazing hot pot!! It’s the only place I might even like better than Happy Lamb! They have a huge selection of broth flavors. We got the fish maw and chicken broth, pork broth with pepper, and regular pork. We took home all the broth at the end because that soup is TASTY. All their ingredients taste really fresh and high quality. The meats are very soft and tender. I especially liked the beef ring—it was a fun addition and both types of beef were yummy! The fried tofu rolls, bamboo fungus, and napa cabbage were 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 SO MUCH YUM! I left here stuffed and happy. Would definitely come back!
It feels like a high end hotpot restaurant with fresh ingredients. I really like it’s strew although it’s a bit too salty, but I don’t blame them because I’m always on the light side when it comes to sauce. The service has been fantastic. I will come back again
I believe this is the go to Chinese hotpot in San Mateo. The place is nice and spacious. The hotpot meat and other ingredients are the best quality. We got the a split broth with spicy one side and pork bone broth on the other. Again excellent quality. Not to mention the very large sauce bar. This is the place to go to in San Mateo for hotpot. You won't be disappointed.
The broth and ingredient quality here are amazing! This may be one of my new favorite hot pot spots to go to. I love spicy broths, and this one hit the spot while still not being too spicy. The meats were all good and fresh, and for the sides I particularly loved the shrimp paste with roe. I think you can skip a lot of the fried side dish food and the noodles which I only found to be ok, but definitely come here if you want spicy hot pot!
We had an amazing time at this hot pot restaurant! The ingredients were incredibly fresh, especially the thinly sliced meats and crisp vegetables. The broth options were flavorful — we tried both spicy and mushroom, and both were rich and satisfying. The staff was friendly and attentive, always making sure we had everything we needed. The dipping sauces were a highlight — so many choices to mix and match to your taste. It’s a perfect place to go with family or a group of friends, very interactive and cozy.
I had an absolutely wonderful dining experience at this hotpot restaurant. The food was fresh and beautifully presented — the meat platter was arranged like a work of art, and the fried skewers were crispy and flavorful. The soup bases were rich and aromatic, with both spicy and creamy options that complemented all the ingredients perfectly. The staff were attentive and friendly, and I really appreciated the little touches — like the stylish way the skewers were served and the clean, comfortable dining environment. It’s a great place to enjoy a delicious meal with friends or family. Highly recommended!
This hotpot spot is a must-visit for broth lovers. Their chicken soup with fish maw is rich and nourishing, and the spicy house broth brings just the right amount of heat. Their meats are well-marbled and incredibly tender with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. To top it off, their buckwheat tea is smooth and fragrant, making for a refreshing complement to the meal. High quality ingredients and well-crafted broths, this place is a solid choice for a satisfying hotpot experience!
I recently had the opportunity to dine at Liuyishou, and overall, it was a pleasant experience. The atmosphere was inviting, with a cozy setup that made it suitable for both casual meals and special gatherings. One of the standout features was the variety of ingredients available. They offered a wide selection of fresh vegetables, meats, and seafood, allowing for a customizable hotpot experience. The quality of the ingredients seemed fresh, which is always a plus. I particularly enjoyed the marble beef and fresh seafood and grill lamb skewer. The broth options were diverse, catering to different taste preferences. I opted for the classic spicy and pork bone broth which were both flavorful and complemented the ingredients well. It was nice to have the option to mix and match flavors based on personal preference. Service was attentive without being intrusive. The staff were knowledgeable about the menu and were happy to make recommendations. They checked in periodically to ensure we had everything we needed. Overall, my experience at Liuyishou was enjoyable. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun dining experience where you can enjoy cooking at the table and sharing good food with friends or family.
This is the best hotpot place in the Bay Area❣️❣️❣️The soup base tastes the same as I had in Chongqing, China. And the services is good, we were there with two kids, the sever offered kid’s utensils to us at the very first beginning. The sauce bar is awesome too 👏🏼 there are soooooo many options which can make tons of sauce combinations. I will definitely come back again. 💯
The best and best, every time we will go there and joy the hot pot. They have many different flavors to choose your soup, I love the chicken and spicy one. We ordered big round for meat, I love the meat it’s lamp and beef. Then you can order some vegetables to put in chicken soup, you also can drink the soup and vegetables are tastes fresh and yummy.
Total Score: 7.80 Bathroom: 4.75/5 Very fancy bathroommmm fancy rectangle plant thing but the urinal was so low to the ground I kept on catching strays 😭😭 Customer Service: 3.75/5 Refilled our hotpots but sometimes we were confused what they were doing lol. Kept on double backing with our table Ambiance: 4/5 Nothing of note. Was clean spacious and bright ig. Food: 4.5/5 Good selection of food. Tried a lot of new items like the pig brain and the shrimp 油条. Also liked the free small bites. I guess can’t really say much about how it’s cooked lol. Wow: 0/1 Normal hotpot restaurant. Total Score = BR + CS + 2*AM + 5*FOOD + WOW
We ordered the lunch special all you can eat meat option. The soup bases, and everything else you have to order separately. It was pretty good if you’d like to eat meat for lunch, the meat quality was OK, not the most prime cut of hot pot meat, but for lunch and the price it is a pretty good deal.
Parking: street meters, pay parking lots. The restaurant locates in San Mateo downtown. The place is clean and offers variety of options for hot pot. Food: various soup bases to choose from, people can have one to three different soup bases in one pot. Foods are fresh and many varieties. They also have free self-serve snack stands at the middle of the place, such as sesame balls, chicken feet, veggie, fruits, and self-mix dipping sauce. Price: about average for hot pot places.
Returning to Liuyishou Hotpot in San Mateo after a pre-COVID visit was a comforting experience. The quality I remembered was still evident. The pork belly and slice marbled beef were undeniably fresh, and the cuttlefish paste offered a delightful textural contrast. The Chinese cabbage was a welcome addition to the flavorful two-flavor soup base I chose: the rich and moderately spicy Liu House special base and the comforting pork bone soup. The familiar authenticity of the hotpot experience remains a strong draw. My only observation, consistent with many dining experiences in the Bay Area, is that the prices do seem to have increased since my last visit. However, the quality of the ingredients and the flavorful soup bases still make Liuyishou a worthwhile hotpot destination in San Mateo.
During our visit, a staff member behaved very aggressively and unprofessionally. While we were still dining and had not finished our food, she repeatedly accused us of trying to take self-serve items to-go and demanded extra charges in a confrontational way. Despite the poor service, we still paid an 18% tip. Later, without justification, she accused my wife of recording and then used her own phone to record my wife at close range in public, which made us feel harassed and unsafe. No manager intervened during the incident. We are requesting a review of this restaurant for staff conduct and professionalism.
