North China Restaurant Santa Maria Reviews
The best Chinese food in SLO county! We had delicious moo shu pork- served beautifully with thin pancakes and hoisin sauce. We also had the tower of Honey Walnut Shrimp. It was perfect, light, crispy large shrimp were battered and fried in fresh oil. The portions were very generous! We brought at least half home. We wish there was a San Luis Obispo North China Restaurant!
Great food plus we are able to get gluten free and vegan. A rare treat!
Excellent foods and service. We very much appreciate that the food is prepared perfectly with vegetables still having a bit of crunch from being stir fried just right. We are also so happy with the exceptional balance of flavors and sauces; not over sauced! We are vegan and there's a separate veggie menu page, which is nice to have, with excellent vegetable dishes to select from. All veggie selections have been great at every meal. The way the tofu is prepared is really fantastic! It tastes great in all selections. Highly recommend dining.
Been coming here for a few years. I highly recommend coming, its a good place to bring your family. The north china special lo main is great. Glad to have this restaurant in Santa maria.
Large portions and great food. The Mongolian Beef is excellent. I was worried the quality might drop when it was sold, but it hasn't. One of the best places to get Chinese food.
We have wanted to try for a long time but our schedule doesn't coincide. Today wasn't different. We planned our visit (forgetting the afternoon closure) and arrived moments after they closed. We waited, ran some other errands and came back for 4pm opening. We enjoyed EVERY BIT OF IT. We started with soup, however I could see someone thinking things took too long if they hadnt had a starter. But we were super hungry and the portion for 2 was tremendous. We had a sweet and sour dish where the crust was likely the best I've ever tried. We also had a Garlic Chicken Dish which was phenomenal. I don't recall having such a dish in my 52 years. Normally I'd have chosen white meat, I don't think this was, but again the flavor exceeded my expectations. As a NYer, we pride ourselves in knowing good Chinese food. THIS IS GREAT CHINESE FOOD!
We were traveling from Yosemite National Park to Los Angeles and stopped in Santa Maria for the night. The hotel recommended several places and we chose this one. We're very happy we did. We ordered "to-go" and waited for our order of Sweet and Sour Chicken and Pork Fried Rice. While we waited, we were given a pot of hot tea and cookies, which was super nice. The serving size is plentiful, to say the least. And it was delicious! I must admit, we were skeptical at first because it was a bit pricey. But it was so good that the price was worth it.
Best Chinese food ever! We ordered Neptunes plate, General's Chicken, House Lo Mien, Chicken fried rice, Twice cooked Pork, and Kung Pao Beef. Everything was hot and fresh. I drive 30 minutes from home when I have a craving for Chinese and it's worth the drive every time. The servings are large portions enough to share! They have many awards decorating the walls and they are all well deserved!
We received complementary tea as soon as we sat. We ordered chicken cashew, fried rice with chicken, and the egg flour soup. The soup was delicious. Fried rice was a bit dry. The chicken cashews flavor was good but too salty. Service was good and timely. She even put our leftovers into containers for us. The atmosphere was nice and clean.
The food was great! It's very tasty. My suggestion is to pick two items it's a lot of food, even for 5 people, granted it was my kids eating. But we all enjoyed it. Service needs to check on people more often for refills. Atmosphere they need some sort of music to go with meals. It would help with the meal immersion.
North China Restaurant is good overall. I went there for lunch on a Wednesday. Parking on the street was pretty easy. The dining room had some open tables when I came in and I was a little confused because there was no register or hostess station by the front door. I was directed by one of the servers to head through the restaurant and through the back door to a waiting area in the back where I was to write my name on the waitlist. There is a little place to sit and read the menu. I was seated after 5-minutes. There is a lunch special with about a dozen standard plates which include soup, egg roll, fried won ton, and fried rice for $14-15 dollars. The table was clean, and a server came right away and took my drink order. The same server quickly came back with my drink and took my order of the lunch special featuring pork fried rice. A very rich and tasty egg drop soup came right away along with hot tea and my diet coke. The soup was very dense and fill with eggs, tofu, and vegetables. Very tasty. Shortly thereafter my lunch special came. Steaming hot, nice looking, and neat presentation of chow mien with lots of bits of pork, generous portion of fried rice, and sizeable egg roll and smallish won ton. I started with the egg roll, and it was surprisingly good with bits of meat and vegetables. The fried wonton was a bit overcooked and didn't contain much of anything I could distinguish. I dipped both fried pieces in a good sweet and sour sauce they brought. The pork chow mien was very good. The noodles were finer in thickness and texture than what I've been served in other restaurants, and I liked it. There were good bits of pork and vegetables throughout the serving. Overall, very nice taste and texture. The fried rice was light and fluffy. Nicely colored and pleasant tasting. I had some trouble distinguishing vegetables or meat in it and prefer more little goodies in the fried rice. The servers were excellent and very attentive checking back with me multiple times and refilling my drinks. The servers were nice, and I could see them smiling at me from under their masks. This was a nice place to eat lunch.
It was my third time in this restaurant, and they do have better Chinese food offerings than other restaurants. Though our egg foo young didn’t taste fresh, and it was soaked in sauce, the appetizer platter wasn’t worth it except for the egg roll, and shrimps and our soup came warm, not hot. It’s a busy restaurant, but the quality of food should not be compromised, and they don't have Chinese desserts and only offers ice cream. The waitstaff was somewhat friendly but lacks good customer service. No one offers “Real” Chinese food in the area, and if North China step up their game, they could be it! Btw, we visited this place on Chinese New Year for lunch, and I’m surprised that they didn't offer any specials to commemorate the holiday.
I had one of the worst meals I have ever had. I asked if they could prepare salt and pepper shrimp as it is not on the menu. I was told they could. However what was served to me was a plate of extremely greasy thick-tempura fried shrimp. I let the waitress know. I ended up peeling all the greasy thick tempura off and ate the shrimp. It was the worst fried shrimp.
Not traditional! This place serves Chinese food that is not traditional in the way of making. A lot of their dishes are China inspired but made with random ingredients and vegetables. Service was also not very polite and traditional. Things felt rush. No chopsticks. Started with Forks on the table. Mentioned of servers asking if we wanted hot sauce multiple times which we think is funny 😆. Good atmosphere. Beautiful restaurant but not up too par for foodwise and definitely not “Northern Chinese Cuisine”.
