Steger Haus Sodus Point Reviews
Our first visit. We had sauerbraten. Excellent salad bar. Very good drinks. It was very good. Very attentive wait staff. We will be back.
Vicki and Belinda and recently Denise make every dinner we have had at The Steger Haus feel like we are at home! The salad bar is always fresh, and the soup is always hearty!! ♥️
Excellent food, great service and wonderful environment! The prime rib was the best! Will definitely make future reservations to go back. Thank you!
I had a pork chop well prepared came with a baked potato also nicely done. Came with a side salad and soup, generous servings. Lovely server. Nicely spaced tables.
Good food and great service. A little pricey, but the staff was very accommodating for a food allergy. Best service we have ever had dealing with out daughters dairy allergy.
A nice salad bar and great daily specials makes every trip worth while. After an initially poor experience a coupon brought my back and I have enjoyed it since. Excellent German selections.
Excellent service. Delicious beef barley soup part of a nice salad bar. Fantastic prime rib for a reasonable price. Highly recommend it there
My husband and I ordered here for thw first time last night and it was WONDERFUL! 5 stars through and through. The food was delicious and the woman who took my order was also very nice and helpful. We will absolutely be return customers
Seafood Fra Diabolo is tops. Spiced to order, crab legs and steaks are always cooked to perfection. I've been eating here off and on since 1988. Often over looked because it's not on the main drag, this place is hands down just an awesome comfortable place to have an incredible family meal. You owe it to yourself to come on down for the Friday fish fry. Yum.
Last week I had the Stuffed Pork Chop Dinner at Steiger House, Sodus Point, NY, IT WAS FABULOUS!!! Can’t wait till beginning of July to have it again...I’ve also had their Prime Rib & Seafood Casino, again FABULOUS!!! Highly recommend.. I have had to get take out due to COVID-19, and the dinners have been wonderful....
The authentic German fare is my birthday treat every year. To-die-for schnitzel, with garlic noodles. Miracle of all miracles - my husband ate BROCCOLI in the form of broccoli and cheese soup. Loved it even. I thought the roof would cave in. Actually, all the soups have been delicious. Yes the surroundings are of an old and homey lake-land favorite - You want crisp decor? Stay uptown.
Best dining experience I’ve had in many years! Entire staff was friendly and courteous! Food was excellent! If you are in this area, check it out!!
The Stegar Haus has always been like a hidden gem. Great food. Good service and a comfortable atmosphere
Haven’t been here in years and so glad to see things haven’t changed much. Still great food and lovely staff. Thank you for a great birthday dinner.
They have old-fashioned German food, a salad bar, and a prime rib that I'll be eating for 3 days because it was so big.
Best prime rib EVER. I take friends and family once or twice a month for prime rib or the once a month special, stuffed porkchops. Reservations are required.
We were seated quickly, 4 people, and the staff was outstanding. Food was excellent and I will definitely return in the future. I have ordered the chicken marsala at various restaurants. This was hands down the best.
Left area two years ago came back for visit Steager Haus was on the list for must dos. Excellent, consistent food, great staff! Husband had prime rib that was ample size. Cooked exactly like requested. I had broiled scallops also plenty & tasty. Don't change a thing this is a local treasure we will visit whenever we are in vicinity.
Everything was wonderful. Food, atmosphere, waitresses. Was my first time there telling all to try it.
First time visit. While the decor is a bit dated, I actually found it nostalgic. However, the German menu items are very authentic and worth the trip. Regular menu items are done well also, and prices are very reasonable.
I have never had a bad meal here! Great food, one of my go to items is the three cheese chicken French, no it is not on the menu but he always has the stuff to make it. Great price rib and pork chops as well.
The food and service at the Steger Haus is always excellent.
Dinner with my husband. Steger Haus Wednesday special is prime rib extraordinaire. And a wonderful soup and salad bar. The palate is pleased! The price is unbeatable. The bartender does it all very well. We had a terrific manhattan.
Sure the place is due for renovation, but it stays very busy with a loyal customer base. Why ? Great food and big drinks at a fair price. Atmosphere is relaxed. So glad that the salad bar is up and running again. One of my top 5 restaurants in the area.
The prime rib excellent as always. Service was perfect. Place is beautiful. I was surprised by family for my bday family brought in cake our waitress brought it to the table with lit candles and sang happy birthday. How awesome is that !!!! Great place. My favorite!!!!
Took my lady for a Valentine's day dinner. We both had Prime Rib. It was tender and delicious as usual. They even presented us with a complimentary small bottle of champagne. Service was excellent as usual.
Excellent service . food was very good. excellent. Prices were average I was asked several times how my meal was The salebar was also excellent . It's nice to have a restaurant with a salad bar . They were constantly maintaining it . The staff was very friendly
Our waitress was wonderful. Prime rib was perfect, my daughter had chicken parm and all was excellent! Will definitely look forward to dining there again.
Absolute best restaurant I've been to in years. This is an old school restaurant where the servers are polite and knowledgeable and every entree comes with a soup and salad bar. They just don't make places like this anymore. Can't recommend it highly enough.
Wonderful atmosphere. The food & portions are outstanding. Best prime rib cooked to perfection!! Love this place!! Hidden gem 💎
Had the prime rib dinner and a crown and coke with the family, the meat was absolutely delicious and the drink was a little strong but thats what its all about. Overall very good service and dining experience
We were early but did not have reservations which they seem to require. By the time we left I understand why, the restaurant and bar was packed. I had never ordered their sauerbraten before so our waitress, Bonnie, brought me a sample, which was excellent. My husband had their regular size prime rib and was not able to finish it. He said it was one of best he's ever had . The salad bar had a large variety and everything was fresh and very appealing . Service was excellent. We will be back, with reservations!
Great food and salad bar. Have never had a bad meal or service. Specials are good but the Schnitzel is always incredible!!! Don’t sleep on the pumpernickel bread!! It has great flavor and adds to any meal. TY for all the great meals and memories.
I went to Steger Haus with my family recently and I had never been there before . I loved the salad bar. It had mostly basic salad ingredients, but everything was fresh and delicious. They also had really great hearty soup and freshly baked bread. Where this restaurant lost a star was with the quality of their Delmonico steak. We were intending to have the Prime Rib, but they don't start that until the evening. Most of my party ordered the Delmonico as a substitute and we all like our steaks pretty rare. Everyone ordered between medium rare and rare and they all came out closer to medium well. There was also a lot of fat and gristle in some of the steaks, and they were extremely thin. Not impressive, but what was impressive was the waitress who replaced the steaks at no cost and apologized for the wait. It was overall a good experience. Also, the seafood scampi was very good. ***Update to this review! My husband and I visited again. We both had the Prime Rib and choice of potato. Everything was delicious and you really can't beat the prices. With the inflation these days, two people can't usually get a big steak dinner with salad, soup, and bread for less than $80 and we were able to have all that and dessert for less than $50. Plus, unparalled service and friendly staff. We will be back again and again!
My girlfriend and I stopped randomly at this restaurant because I wanted to show her German food since I am born and raised in Germany. I was surprised by how authentic the food was. I personally think that especially the Bratwurst and Sauerkraut would compare extremely well to its German competition and might be outstanding. (Sauerkraut was better than my grandma’s)
Such a great dining experience. The prime rib was excellent. Cooked to perfection and tasty. Salad bar has great options. The soup, clam chowder, also delicious. Tried some of the fish fry (Cajun style) and it was so tasty. Wonderful place for a great filling meal. 10/10 will eat here again!!
Great food at a very reasonable price.
Favorite place to visit with best friends. Never disappointed. Amazing meals, generous salad bar, excellent drinks. And all surpassed by friendly, prompt service.
We always order the prime rib. It is always prepared superbly. The salad bar is great, but the vegetable beef soup is totally outstanding! Sometimes they would have pork and sauerkraut soup which is amazing. The trip to the countryside is lovely as well.
Bonnie is the best waitress! Ask for her tables. Always makes us feel as if we are her only customers and gives us first rate service. Food is good and there are great choices. The salad bar is coming back!! That is worth the trip alone!
Love this place great food wonderful service been going here for a while and have Never been disappointed. Recommend the prime rib dinner.
Food was excellent!!! Great place for a date. You should most definitely make a reservation!
Went there for my birthday loved it was really nice
We absolutely love dining here. It’s about a 40 minute drive, but it is so worth it. The food is always delicious.
I hosted my office Christmas party here and it was a great experience for large parties! I also have had small dinners with my family here as well! The salad bar is great and the bread and soup are always good! I recommend the prime rib or the chicken parm! And the bartender is amazing too!
I recently booked dinner for a large group of family for my Mom's 80th Birthday. We had great food, service and the value for your money was amazing! Bonnie and team knocked it out of the park, it was a perfect evening. Thank you so much for making our celebration so nice!
Eating at this restaurant last night was one of my best experiences eating out in many years! The prime rib was perfect. The service was top notch and the atmosphere was very nostalgic. I haven’t been to a restaurant where you have a salad bar, bread and soup bar which was great ! Our waitress was very nice and attentive . Our food was amazing! Our drinks were good and strong. Cannot wait to come back again. It will be soon!
This is a country restaurant type feeling, the food is consistently good and their salad bar is outstanding. The salad bar is VERY fresh and immaculately kept, tons of variety, always a soup and fresh bread as well. You will be impressed for the reasonable cost, it is worth the drive. Last but not least, Wednesday they usually have a prime rib special that is a true value!
Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon after visiting Sodus point. decided to order the prime rib, even though my wife and I were only going to get the salad bar. it was absolutely fabulous. One of very few restaurants that can blacken meat the way I like it. cheers to Bonnie for telling me to get it
German foods and American. Jaeger Schnitzel is my favorite here... pork steak breaded and cooked in a lemon butter delicious! Yummy Prime Rib, delicious seafood stuffed haddock. Salad bar is great, with fresh bread and delicious homemade soups...
The salad bar is the only one in Sodus, NY and very well appreciated when we vacation at the Point. I could make a meal of it alone. The soups are delightful, the dinners that we had so far were Prime Rib and fish. If they ever wish to warm up the bread this could be a good favorite of ours.
Good food- usually good service. Unless you get that one waitress that plays favorites. Then it is not enjoyable, especially when you pay a good price for your meal. Lose the waitress & you'll get 4.5 star rating.
Terrific staff, love their salad bar and homemade soup. Their prime rib is outstanding!
The restaurant is a family favorite. Clams cassino are spot on! I also enjoy many of their authentic German dishes and my husband's favorite prime rib. They have several desserts to choose from if you can manage eating after a full open salad bar and soup along with appetizers and your meal. Great selection and awesome wait staff.
Always great food. And reasonably priced. Usually crowded on Wednesday eves .Prime rib special.. yummy
Great for Thanksgiving. Reasonable prices. They have a bar there. Reservations are available. They are on the corner, so it is easy to find. They have been in business since 1982. We have gone there for many years. They have a wheelchair accessible entrance, but the parking is limited there. Usually you have to take the stairs. It is therefore not really good for handicap people. Food is a buffet and they have a salad bar. The place desperately needs a remodel though.
WARNING...if you order their delicious prime rib dinner, baked potato, soup, and salad be aware that it is big enough for two people! In so doing, you will have sufficient room for their delicious german chocolate cake. Unfortunately, we were not duly warned.
Long running restaurant with authentic German foods. Nice weiner schnitzel every time. Excellent soup and salad bar with only one soup but about 20 fresh salad additions and fresh breads. Very reasonable prices too! Wish they served a few more New York State wines.
Our server Bonnie was extremely nice and service was fantastic. My husband had the Pork Chop (ordered in advanced, first Saturday of each month) and I, who rarely eats meat had the prime rib. It was very good and the price was amazing! If you are that way - worth a try! Don't go on the 1st Saturday of any month without a reservation!!
The Steger House is a very well established restaurant located in Sodus Point, NY. Reservations are strongly recommended but walk ins are welcome as well. The dining areas are spacious with lots of seating and everything was really clean. The menu is somewhat limited but you will find some delicious meals and entrees and appetizers. They serve coke products and wine and other alcoholic beverages as well. They have a nice little soup and salad bar that comes with your meal and you won't leave hungry. The pricing is pricey but average for the point and other local restaurants. I didn't leave without spending 100 dollars for 2 adults and one child. Overall we had a nice dinner and the servers were wonderful. You gotta try it!
The food is extraordinary! The only complaint is they won't divide the bill for separate parties. There were only six of us, so I don't see where that would be a huge problem.
Make sure you make a reservation or you will get scolded by staff when you arrive lol Great food!!! Staff is very nice overall
Pulling in, there was lots of parking and easy to find. We arrived for our 430 reservation and i liked they had nice wide steps with a railing. The Food was excellent, my father and i got the prime rib with the salad bar. My baked potato was cooked perfectly. We had a blonde server, tho i dont recall her name she was friendly yet efficient. Service was attentive and they had several hosts ready to seat you as well. The salad bar was clean and had a nice variety. The atmosphere was local, casual with a relaxed historical vibe. The only thing I would recommend is some tunes as I felt everyone could hear our conversations. By no means will that stop me from coming back! And it was early in the evening. The prime rib was a nice medium rare and not dry, tho not heavily seasoned. Overall a great experience!
Still have a salad bar and hot soup with a bread station. Inside decore could use a huge do over. Ladies bathroom is like really ,really small stalls. I don't know what the hell happened in there. Just be aware when you go in there. Overall food is good. If you get the guy bar tender get a peach 🍑 martini they are the bomb! And you get the extra. Worth it in my book.
Good restaurant serving American food with some German dishes. The salad bar is much appreciated, I wish more restaurants would bring them back. Prime rib was very good.
This is definitely German fare with pork and sauerkraut soup on the salad bar. It was ok. A bit pricey for what you get. Basic salad bar. Fresh bread. German potato salad. $15 for pork chops is the cheapest thing you'll find on the menu minus the appetizers.
I had a Char boiled Prime rib. It looked good but it was less than room temperature. The server took it back and had it warm up promptly. Otherwise everything was great. It also required reservations, no walk in.
Service was excellent. The atmosphere was ruined by a group next to us talking PRO-Trump very loudly. It made for a stomach turning dinner. Didn’t go out to listen to that. Food was ok.
Although the food was really great and our waitress/ server stared out excellent, she was unable to return to us after the restaurant got busy. There simply wasn't enough staff. NOT her fault! We had to wait 40 minutes to get our checks then had to figure out each bill on our own. How archaic!! This place needs a HUGE update. Even the faucets in the women's bathroom only trickled water. Having good food without the rest of the amenities will not get you a 4 or 5 star rating. Very 😔 sad.
So we have been twice to this German restaurant. The service was good & the staff very friendly BUT if you want authentic German food I would not suggest going here. We are part German & know the culture very well. The Jager schnitzel didn’t even come with mushroom gravy. They do not have spaetzle, they only have very plain wide egg noodles. Their sauerbraten was barely sour & the meat was chewy, it’s obvious it’s not traditionally prepared. To be honest the only decent thing on the menu from us & our friends experiences was the bratwurst. The restaurant is outdated & seems to gear more towards the baby boomer generation, no offense to anyone. We really wanted to like this place because we really love German food! It’s just a shame.
Stop By to get a gift certificate at 4:30. New we needed a reservation. Nice young girl asked if we had one and I said no. I could ask if you would like me to. We said ok! She asked, probably the Manager lady and in an annoyed voice said maybe 15 minutes. We should have said never mind but we waited. As this same lady walked us to our table she said ," you know you need reservation " I know I replied. we are short handed!! She said, and treated us cold! Sweet young girls working the tables did everything with a smile and the food was delicious!
Previously I'd rated Steger Haus quite highly... sorta an old-style family restaurant with a salad bar and reasonably authentic German food on the menu... Recent visits, quite a decline. Staff dressed more sloppy (yes, still friendly). One might expect Spetzel as a given at a German venue, not garlic egg noodles. Jaeger Schnitzel ought have a mushroom gravy, not lemon sauce similar to a Chicken Francaise. Menu is NOT misleading descriptions, just "wrong" to names and feels less enthusiastic overall... best dish was their Prime Rib - but that's not even specifically German.
Went to Steger Haus Sunday 5/19/2013 for the first time and it will be our last. When we first walked in the place it had a smell of must/mold. That should of been our first clue. The bar is hideously outdated. Only one waitress/hostess/bartender working. Went to be seated and my chair (cloth) was stained and had food on it and so was my husband's. Started to look around and noticed there was food all over the floor. Went up to the salad bar and my shoes were sticking to the carpet around the bar. Plates at the salad bar were dirty. Salad bar had bagged iceberg lettuce with only green peppers, red onion or tomatoes for toppings. The rest of the bar was different mac/potato salads. Received out food an hour after being seated. I had the Jeager-Schnitzel. Food was mediocre at best. Waitress finally gave us our check and I had to give it to the bust girl to process because the one waitress/hostess/bartender was too busy. On the way out decided to use the restroom and was quickly turned around when the toilet in the ladies room was overflowing with feces. This place is a dump! I can't even imagine nor do I want to know what their kitchen looks like!! I would have rather eaten at Taco Bell and used the bathroom at a gas station!
We are from out of town and passed the restaurant on the way to one we had already selected. I thought that since the reviews were amazing, we would go there instead. We arrived inside and sat down to order. My boyfriend mentioned it was my birthday and nothing came out of it; I wasnt looking to get anything but he mentioned it anyways. For $60, the Seafood Scampi was lacking flavor and very soggy along with the NY strip steak that was bland as well. Pretty disappointed.
Place needs to be updated, or at least cleaned and replace the water damaged ceiling tiles! My prim rib was good but undercooked and the two people who ordered seafood were both sick from it. My desert was still partly frozen and an other was frozen solid. The one waitress had black front teeth and it took forever them to take our drink orders and even longer for the food to show up! On a positive note, the bead was good! Tho the salad bar was sad, everything was some type of noodle covered in some type of mayonnaise dressing. Was very disappointing!!
Ordered filet med. And lobster tail, filet was rare sent back they put the lobster tail under broiler. Was rubber ,ruined dinner but while waiting we looked around wow place was very dirty, salad bar doors taped shut with black tape, spider webs on ceiling ,waitress was awesome,
Stopped for dinner this evening. Did not look very busy but was told without reservations we could not be served. Was truly disappointed they could not seat two people in a half full restaurant.
It takes talent to ruin veal this badly. My wife described her roast beef as cooked shoe-leather. Worth visiting if you want to know what it's like to dine out in the black lodge. A truely surreal experience.
Portion sizes were generous and the dining room was cozy. The room decor was dated. The fish had bones in it and the mainaria was bland. The bathrooms could barely fit two people and weren't clean. The salad bar was pretty good but the fresh bread wasn't so fresh.
Wait staff fills salad bar tubs with their bare, unwashed hands. All food is handled with ungloved hands in the back including those wonderful store bought desserts they offer. Right from the box to your plate with the hands of a teenage busser. Watch your purse because money is constantly coming up "missing" from within the restaurant. Staff is somewhat rude to one another and there is often a very active child running all thru out the restaurant including kitchen (wait staffs child? Don't know)
Been calling since early am. Finally around 1245 pm a gentleman answered the phone. I said I’d like to make reservations. The previous time there we called at 3pm got reservations no problem. So Jim say I can take a reservation at 730pm I said fine 6 please he immediately said no and said I can only take 2. Didn’t even say I can give you 3 tables of 2. We keep a boat at krenzers all summer since 2016. Never once cooking on boat we eat every meal out to support the economy. It’s my nephews 10th Anniversary he drove 7 hr up from Delaware to try it out. Our CDock family got us hooked on Stegar Haus. I’ve now told several people at the dock and they say they have terrible customer service. I’ve always gotten great services from waitresses always tipping 20 percent or more. We were told the other week make sure you call before 3. We started calling early AM. Jim told us at 1245 pm only 2 people. I asked when the manager will be in he said 4 pm. My husband tried calling after me now no one is answering phone. I asked for Jim’s last name he said Steger. I guess since he’s a relative he doesn’t need manners or to accommodate people that support them year after year. Very disappointed. A friend of ours down here said don’t worry I’m calling a friend and going to have a health inspector come to their business since they don’t want to cook maybe there cleaning.
Wish I could give this place zero stars worst food I've ever had in my life. Ordered the chicken schnitzel and I got a buttery mess dish was so watery. Waitress told me sometimes it comes out good and sometimes it comes out like that, at a good restaurant food is always consistent but this place is far from a good restaurant please don't waste your money. Place is very dirty and dinghy definitely need a remodel or knock the whole place down and start over.
We haven’t been here in 3 years And the service is horrible!! Food I’ve had better. But the worst part is that they don’t do separate checks you have to figure your own bill out and then give cash to your friend that paid the bill on his card!! No ATM so we had to scrape up our pennies. Well I know I will never go there again!!!
This is a tough review to write. I know this is a local small business, but I don’t know if I’ve ever been so disappointed in food, ever. We ordered Chicken French and Chicken Parm. Supposed to be our anniversary dinner. Both of the chicken pieces in both dishes were awful. They were so gummy and soggy and could not be cut with a fork as chicken cutlets should be in both of those dishes. The French sauce was greasy butter. No lemon, no wine, separated tasteless butter. The red sauce is so chunky and sweet it’s wild. I’m sorry but I cannot in good conscience recommend this restaurant.
Worst German Food and staff experience the wife and I have ever experienced. We will not be returning. Locals stated it was a nice place with good food. We went specifically for German faire. We had to return both entrees due to the taste and the quality was less than appetizing. Wait staff told us to leave once we had returned our entrees. Waitress was rude and told us "This must not be the restaurant for you!" We meant no disrespect, but it was obviously taken that way.
Never got to eat at the restaurant. Web says reservations not required, OH YES THEY ARE, that is if you don't want the rude staff to turn you away. The place was empty but we were not allowed to stay. If you want to eat here, make a reservation, walk ins not welcome.
