El Jayamitla: The Kind of Place Bourdain Would’ve Walked Into Without a Second Thought There’s a tiny restaurant down the street from my house in Sylmar. The kind of place you pass a thousand times without ever noticing. I’ve been buying lotto tickets next door for years and never once felt the pull to walk in. Maybe that’s on me. Maybe that’s on all of us who forget that some of the best food in America is hiding in plain sight, behind fogged-up windows and hand-painted signs. A friend of mine David, Super Dave dragged me in for Menudo one cold morning. Now, I’m picky. The kind of picky that comes from eating everywhere, flying everywhere, and knowing what real food tastes like. Out of respect for my friend, I went. And what happened next surprised the hell out of me. This isn’t a fancy spot. No polished chrome, no curated neon, no “elevated Mexican cuisine” nonsense. Just a humble room, the smell of simmering broth, and people who cook like they mean it. The Menudo? Legit. Rich, clean, comforting the kind that feels like someone’s mother woke up at 4 a.m. to get it right. Today, with the cold hitting hard, I called to ask if they had Caldo — real beef stew, slow-cooked, honest. They said yes. So I grabbed some friends and went back. And once again: incredible. The señora in the back stopped what she was doing and made us fresh, handmade tortillas on the spot. Soft, steaming, imperfectly perfect. The salsa tasted like something pulled from a family recipe older than the restaurant itself. And the Caldo? Exactly what cold weather was invented for. Look I’m a foodie. Not the Instagram kind. The kind who’s eaten across continents, who knows the difference between hype and heart. This place isn’t about décor or photo ops. It’s about food made with intention. Food that warms you. Food that reminds you why small, immigrant-owned kitchens are the backbone of Los Angeles. If you live in Sylmar and haven’t been to El Jayamitla, you’re missing out on one of the most honest meals this neighborhood has to offer. El Jayamitla 13382 Sayre St, Sylmar, CA 91342 A place where the tortillas are made by hand, the broth heals whatever the world broke today, and the food speaks louder than any review I could ever write.

A friend recommended the menudo. It was delicious, just as he said it was. Ask for the habanero salsa if you like your menudo spicy. Nothing fancy here, just good food.

First time I went there I tried the menudo and chilaquiles and they were absolutely amazing. They have such good customer service. They make you feel at home. I would definitely go back again.

Caritas and Carne Asada tacos on homemade corn tortillas were awesome and delicious. The habanero salsa had flavor and good heat. Prices were reasonable too. I'll definitely be back.

Their food is very tasty and they make handmade tortillas. It's a great choice for Mexican food. Don't be fooled by it's humble appearance. Behind the counter, magic happens.

Wow! Saw the reviews and gave it a try. So glad I did. If you find yourself hungry in Sylmar you can't go wrong here! Excellent tacos and burritos, chili verde, etc. 4 of us ordered more food than we could finish for less than $45.

They are very sweet people. They make you feel like if you are in your mom's home. The food is exelent. I'm verry happy with their service and their food. I can't wait for lunch time to go there. I took my Familly there and they love it. Every one should try it.

They do not show the price of each dish. But menudo on a rainy day was great and it's every day not like other places when it is weekend only. The hand made tortillas were good

Soon as I walked in the owner greeted me she was very nice and she cooks the food from scratch. The caldos are good, burritos are big, their home made salsas are fire!!! Small place but nice.

I keep going here hoping it'll be excellent. The bathroom is surprisingly clean. But the whole place is run down. And they have this weird poster thing right in the middle. There isn't really a menu, or maybe you just got to know. I usually have the cabeza, but they didn't have any the last time I was there. So I had the cheese enchilada plate and orange jarritos. $17. The table was old and I watched people drive like idiots out the window. First impressions was, yes this is a cheese enchiladas plate. The salsa came in a ziplock bag. It was warm. And I left full and had a massive carb crash. 3 stars

Ordered a carne asada nachos... It was disgusting. Barely any meat, no cheese, no guac or sour cream. It was mostly beans, and it was old beans. They only put a little bit on top and nothing underneath.

Order a burrito almost $16 thought I was getting a baseball bat burrito but instead I got a little taquito burrito too much beans too much rice not enough meat very cold inside now why would you throw a burrito in the microwave in front of me..? I can do that at home with frozen food.. overpriced I wouldn't suggest anybody that I know that has a mouth and tongue and taste buds go there. The cooks don't seem very happy and waitress also. Okay people ...carne asada is like flat meat or should be like flat meat you know ..that cost $10.99 a pound that you see at the Mexican market... this place a carne asada burrito or taco is hamburger meat fried in oil !!! how nasty is that ?? hamburger meat has oil you do not need oil when you cook hamburger meat!!! and do not call it carne asada burrito or taco ... you call it a hamburger taco and a hamburger burrito I better stop cuz I'm really annoyed and disappointed with this place thank goodness somebody else tried it for me after I exam it.. good luck to all thanks for your time,
