I was a little worried about eating here as I have celiacs, and their menu didn't list GF items. However our waiter, Brain, was really helpful and answered all my questions and even checked with the kitchen to verify what I could have off their menu. I ended up having the jerk mahi mahi, which was better than I expected. It wasn't too fishy, and mixed with mango, rice and chickpeas was the perfect blend. It did have some spice but it wasn't so much that you couldn't taste the food. The atmosphere was nice, and the service for me was amazing. I would recommend this to anyone. I would eat here again.

I’ve been here a few times and always had a great experience. I met a friend here recently for happy hour. (4-6 Wed-Fri) It’s such a great deal! I drank a One for the Chile. It was good. My friend had a rosé. We started with the bean dip- it was amazing. We also had the black garlic Mac and cheese- also fantastic. We split the Jerk mahi which came with rice. Also very good. Service was top notch. I can’t wait to come back.

What a pleasant surprise during a walkabout in Jersey City. Shout out to Google maps for the relevant suggestion based on historical tastes 😉... But this was a great little find. The people were nice. They accommodated our 'no reservation having' selves. The arugula salad with the lime agave vinaigrette was refreshing. The grits and scallops with the welcome smokey bits of bacon? Loving it! This was great all the way through to dessert... Great dining here. And the music was hitting as well... Thank you! 😁

The service provided was good. I did make reservation before going to this place, this place was crowded. I did it in the morning so i think you could do before going to the place. We loved Matthew’s. Our family went to brunch on a Saturday with our two toddlers after visiting the liberty science center and the food was great! They were able to fit us into a small booth even tho we didn’t have a reservation (I would definitely recommend making a reservation) I think we got lucky!

What a great experience! My girls wanted to take me out to dinner for my birthday and I had recently come across Mathews Food & Drink page on Instagram, so I thought we'd check it out. From the moment we were seated, our server, Diego made sure the three of us were well taken care of. We ordered the white bean dip and breaded artichokes as appetizers along with the strawberry jawn, prosecco,and the downeast cider for drinks. For our entrees, we had the roast 1/2 chicken, catfish poboy, and arugula grain salad. Every single thing we had from here was a 10/10! Absolutely delicious food and Diego's attention and great service made our experience that much more lovely. If you're thinking about trying Mathews, I would highly recommend!

This was my second time coming here with a friend, but first time trying their brunch menu. Overall, their cocktails never disappoint with their presentation and taste :) i always start with their 80s glam, just because it's super pretty and not overly sweet (as you would expect it to be, judging by the color lol). We ordered 2 appetizers - fried shrimp and parmesan truffle waffle fries. Both were so delicious and honestly was tempted to order more. However, we held back since we still had to save room for our brunch entrees. My friend ordered the avocado toast, whereas I decided to go with "Country Scramble" which is essentially their take on scrambled eggs and toast. Seasoning on the eggs were amazing and cooked to perfection. I probably should've requested hot sauce or something to add more taste, but nonetheless, very good on its own as well. If you're looking for a trendy spot (whether it be a date or catch up with your friends), this is the place to go! One caveat is that it's almost impossible to find a parking spot on the side, so i suggest parking in the lot nearby, which isn't expensive.

Every trip to Matthew’s is consistently great. The food, the service, the atmosphere... every box is checked. Funny enough, Bryant is ALWAYS our server… lucky us. He’s wonderful! This place has become a local go-to for my partner and I. We can’t wait until our next visit!

This is the second time I've been to Matthews. It's great food and atmosphere. Sunday and Saturday brunch gets very busy. It can be up to an hour wait for a table for 2 depending on the crowd. The bar is open seating and full service so that's what we went with today. We ordered: French toast sticks - delicious! Frittata - I didn't have this but it looked great. Very cheesy. Quinoa arugula Salad - much larger than I thought. I got a side of bacon with it. Avocado toast - solid avocado toast and it comes with mixed greens salad

Bright, cosy, peaceful brunch destination. Fresh and amazing tasting food, great staff. All in all loved it. We went for brunch, so ordered Mathew's Benedict, lemon ricotta pancakes and avocado toast. Everything was fresh and delicious. Loved the freshly squeezed orange juice too. Have now been to Mathews a few times with friends, and it’s earned its way into a “go to” position. Great service, food and drink. Always comfortable and cozy without feeling cramped or rushed.

Visited on Labor Day weekend and to my surprise it wasn’t so busy. When I walked in I was immediately seated and greeted by our waitress who kindly offered suggestions for both drinks and food. I had the burger and my husband went with a grilled chicken sandwich. Both were delicious. I had to ask for the 80s glam cocktail and not only was it extremely cute with the glitter but tasted delicious. Vibes were fantastic overall and would definitely come back when we return to Jersey City.

Mathew’s Food and Drink is located in Jersey City and is a nice mix of easy vibes and classic American food. There is a wide range of American dishes from deviled eggs to hot honey crispy chicken sandwiches. Everything was delicious. The hot honey crispy chicken sandwich had a good combination of heat and crispiness. Cocktails is why you come to Mathew’s. From craft cocktails to a diverse selection of beer. Everything was top notch. Overall really enjoyable experience at Mathew’s. If you are in area and are craving a burger with drinks check this place out.

We came here for lunch often. It was bright, modern, yet relaxing. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We liked their BLT, cheeseburger, and honey crispy chicken sandwich (they let me sub the crispy chicken with grilled chicken). We also loved their “newer" lunch dish, Jerk Mahi Sandwich. The sandwiches came with a side of fries or salad.

Mathews is a short walk away from the Grove Street PATH station and has a unique ambiance that makes it a perfect spot for date nights and instagram-worthy pictures. The food is great and offers excellent comfort food, even though the menu is a bit limited - the menu only has a bunch of starters, salads, and sandwiches/burgers. Nonetheless, we ordered the Southern Fried Shrimp, Devilled Eggs, and the Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich and greatly enjoyed all 3. Based on our experience, the only area of improvement would be the mocktails. The Spirit Spritz and Mango & Dreams were both not to our liking (the flavor of orange bitters in the Spirit Spritz was too overpowering, and Mango & Dreams was too sweet and a tad bitter too). The cocktails here look great, and I wish the mocktails also do justice to Mathews reputation. All in all, it was an enjoyable experience and I'd highly recommend it.

The honey chicken sandwich was fantastic! First bite was crispy then slaw and honey kicked in, refreshing, a very good combo! The waffle fries was crispy! Yep, crispy is all I ask about for fries. Helped my friend move into the area and I needed a place to show him how good the brunch/lunch spots in Jersey City are. I chose right. He and our other friend got the chicken and waffles, not pictured, which they LOVED. I elected to get the chicken in sandwich form. With slaw, tomato, and hot honey, this sandwich was insanely good. The chicken was juicy too, which just added to the quality. We all had some Bloody Mary’s too for good measure. This place is also has this classic American vibe going on that was super cool. The area is great to enjoy food, keep drinking, and eat again down the street if that’s your plan. Definitely check this place out for brunch!

Spend Valentine's night at Mathews. Everything was really good. I got an 80s glam cocktail with fun edible glitter. It was really tasty. For starters we ordered the deviled eggs and shrimp corn fritters. The eggs just melted in my mouth. And the sauce for the fritters was so yummy and just the right amount of spicy. My husband ordered the chicken which was perfection 👌. The sauce was too die for and the chicken was nice and juicy. I got the Mahi Mahi, it was good but alittle dry and I feel it could have used some sort of sauce on it. I got the cheesecake for dessert which was great. The vibe was good, the waiter was around just enough.

JOSUE BROUGHT THE VIBEZZZ!!!! We were a group of 5 celebrating a bachelorette and we were seated at this beautiful corner table. The lighting was amazing and we had a nice breeze. We started with the grits and truffle waffle fries, both of which were fantastic. For a meal, the table got the breakfast burger, chicken sandwich, chicken and waffles, and black bean burger. 10/10 WOULD RECOMMEND. For drinks, we got the lychee cocktail, currant bourbon, Baja blast frozen drink, and an espresso martini. The drink art was beautiful and delicious. The staff took pictures for us and really made this a wonderful experience!

A group of us who were on a stopover on our way to a holiday in South Africa met for dinner at this location. We did not have reservations and they were near impossible to get since it was a Saturday and all tables were already reserved. But we showed up just as they opened and they seated us at the window table informing us that it needed to be available for the reserved party by 6:30 pm. No problem! A couple of us ordered cocktails, which were a little on the expensive side, but well worth it. I enjoyed the espresso martini which fully lived up to its name. Someone else ordered the Paradise Island, which is not my cup of tea because of the egg white, but I tasted it and it was a delicious specialty cocktails. We had a couple starters and the only one to disappoint was the deviled eggs. They weren’t bad, it’s just that I’ve had better. But the white bean dip more than made up for it. The addition of the olive tapenade and smoky eggplant toppers made it a step up from the normal hummus. Everyone loved it, served with a side of crispy pita chips. The sticky, sweet smoked chicken wings were also a hit with everyone. Entrees also did not disappoint with assortments including the Short Rib Ragu, the Jerk Mahi Mahi and the NY Strip Steak. What’s not to love! It all hit the spot and no one was disappointed with their choice. There is a reason that this location is one of the recommended hot spots for brunch or dinner. It’s a bit pricey, but when you are on vacation or have a special event, price is not the deterrent for a meal of this calibre. Definitely recommended.

Great spot that’s simply perfect for brunch with many options for group or couple seating. The decor is bright and airy, and service was top notch. Eggs benedict smoked salmon was delicious with the eggs poached to perfection, avocado toast was great, and coffee was solid. Would definitely come back. Close to the grove path station so it’s also convenient.

The mimosa was tasty and the chicken sandwich was good but the coleslaw they added to the sandwich was a little on the sweet side which was a tad much. The side salad had a really good dressing. Mathews Food and Drink is a fine place for Breakfast or Brunch. They have outdoor seating available and tables are placed at socially distance. We were lucky to get table immediately without reservations. But I'm sure given the location of this place, it is recommended to call before you come. They also have QR code for menu to check online. We came here for Brunch. We ordered Avocado Toast and Black Bean Burger with Deviled Eggs. Burger was delicious with perfection of moist. Deviled Eggs were unique. We haven't had such boiled eggs elsewhere. Both are must recommended. Avocado Toast was okay. I have had better. Taking one star for Toast. Staff was friendly but bit hurried. She was rushing us to place an order. Might be because of limited seating. Glad we checked menu before we came so our mind was set on what to order.

Matthew's Food and Drinks in Jersey City is a fantastic destination for those seeking a great ambiance and creative cocktails. The seating was comfortable, and the lighting added a touch of sophistication to the entire space. Whether you're looking for a cozy corner or a lively bar atmosphere, this restaurant provides options that suit various moods. The cocktails are a definite highlight, well-crafted and had a perfect balance of flavors. The starters are good and go to go with the drinks. While the cocktails and starters were impressive, the main course options for vegetarians were somewhat limited. I feel expanding the vegetarian/vegan offerings would greatly enhance the dining experience. Nonetheless, Matthew's remains a solid choice for a night out, with its stylish decor and a cocktail menu that truly shines.

The food was great, everyone enjoyed their meal. My only opinion is that everything on the menu is spicy, i cant really eat spicy food so that was a downside for myself. It should be more mild options. I appreciated how they were able to make the lobster pasta a bit more mild for me, that pasta was SO BOMB ! We thought the coconut curry mussels were a decent portion for the price, they kind of melted in your mouth as well and the sauce was good. I would recommend and most likely will be back for that lobster pasta.

Nice brunch place in Jersey city downtown. Not a lot of vegetarian selection in the brunch menu although our friends really like the black bean burger. The chicken sandwich was decent (a little too sweet). Somehow they forgot the maple syrup for the pancakes. The buratta with the fig was nice!

I loved their pat lefrieda burger !!!’ I would come back just for that. We tried deviled eggs - pretty yummy. We had the beef ragu - could use a little bit of salt and maybe some more spices; but not bad. We had the fried shrimp, cleaned to perfection and tasted delicious!! 😋 I think overall the Friday night rush always means crowded spaces and loud talking over people just to be heard. In a busy night the atmosphere is super crowded and very noisy. But this place is a very nice place to have dinner with friends. Since there are two rooms, the closest to the bar is the smallest, the other one is the best and it’s for bigger crowds . Parking is super tough , especially on Friday nights!

Great good food and ambiance. Perfect for a group dinner. Service was attentive and quick. I got the ragu pasta with beef and it was absolutely delicious. Would not recommend the s'mores sundae though, the marshmallows in it are terrible. Big portions and many creative cocktails too. The glitter one is particularly pretty.

If you want to come for Brunch on Sunday, you better make a reservation, especially if a party of 4 or more. It gets crowded. The "Steak & Eggs" and "Benedict Eggs + Salmon" were great choices. I would have them again. These two I can recommend. The place is so busy that service is a bit slow (but they are very nice). I ordered some bread for my main and it came when I was done (check the bill because I had to ask for it to be removed). The latte is good but not great.

Went for brunch, nice calm vibe on a Sunday. The service was excellent, the drinks were strong, the food was just okay. Had the grits, lemon ricotta pancakes which were good, the chicken and waffles were okay- chicken needed a little more seasoning, the truffle fries were good but had just a pinch of Parmesan. The coffee with whiskey was strong 😉

LOVE this spot! Comfort food that’s perfect for those with a semi sweet tooth. (Can get busy on a Friday and Saturday night though.) The corn and shrimp fritters (appetizer) were amazing! Like a savory and spicy bread ball with sweet pickled onions. The fried chicken sandwich was also very tasty! Moist chicken and sweet with honey.

Out of 6 different orders, spicy lobster pasta stands out(not spicy but,when eaten hot its just great). Not fan of their chicken sandwich specially with that so much sweet coleslaw. Fries were great, wings kind of okey, fried shrimp were no no, loved garlic mashed potatoes, steak was good, mahi mahi was to die for(recommended). Service was allright, kept on waiting for drinks(they were allright too) then bill. Didnt to mind so much but got an order wrong. But they replaced soon(nice service) Atmosphere was brilliant, i would like to sit inside or out both is cool. Overall experience was good, may be limited to some menu items but some fruit drinks awesome.

We visit this place all the time, and the food has been consistently good for the most part no complaints! I usually order the steak and eggs, which are always flavorful. Out of all my visits, I’ve only had one less-than-great steak, and that was during the summer around 3 PM. My fiancé loves the chicken and waffles, the chicken is well-seasoned and flavorful. We also sometimes get the burgers, which are exceptional, and I absolutely love the waffle fries, they’re my favorite! Overall, this place delivers on quality and consistency, which I think is the key to a great restaurant. I have yet to be disappointed!

Beautiful little restaurant. Very pleasant staff. Sadly for us, the food did not live up! The blackened mac and cheese was very confusing - like a very Indian curry like (clarified butter/ghee butter flavours and not much cheese) and the New York Strip which was extremely disappointing. A very rough cut of meat along with dry unseasoned potatoes and broccoli. My side of the steak was probably next to some lamb or something, because it was extremely gamey on one side. Not really the experience we were looking for. The wine selection was good but the food was a massive let down!

Decent spot for brunch. It was happening, which also means distancing isn't optimal. The table next to us was not even 2 feet away. I'm a bit surprised there's no regulation considering the recent surge. I ordered Benedict. It was quite dry. Wifey ordered avocado toast and she liked it. We also got pancakes for the table - pancakes were good. I also got espresso martini which was good.

The atmosphere and staff are great. We've been three times now as they are local but always slightly disappointed with the food. Never enough to complain but there is always something 'not quite there'; slightly cold, not enough sauce/syrup, not much flavour etc... small things that just feel you leaving a little disappointed.

5 stars for the food. But atmosphere is questionable. Too loud and not your best choice if you’re looking to talk over your food cos your guests are not gonna be able to hear all your words. They may catch a few house flies too while they speak. But again I’d say food was great. 👌🏻

Matthew’s used to be one of my favorite spots—about a year ago the food was consistently good. I went back recently for lunch and ordered a dish I used to get all the time, but it came out completely different. The sandwich had something on it that tasted off to me, so I didn’t feel comfortable eating it and ended up sending it back. After that, I really didn’t have much appetite to finish the rest of my meal. The service was friendly, but a bit slow. Even though the restaurant wasn’t very busy, it took a while for our order to be taken, and it felt like the staff might have been stretched thin. Overall, Matthew’s just doesn’t seem to be at the level it once was, which is disappointing given how much I used to enjoy it.

Table for one, quick brunch. Took forever for someone to ask type of water and when I said I can also order he didn't have a pen on him. Did the waiter just clock in? My table didn't have utensils. When food arrived they didn't even check. I took utensils form the next table over. Ricotta pancakes tasted like bacon. I know you use the same grill..if I wanted bacon I would have ordered it Paid in cash ... They couldn't get it right.

The decor is country-farm chic, and the corner location in a quaint slice of downtown JC is as picturesque as it gets. Too bad we had Surly Smurf during our visit. Won't be back.

This place is scammy. The food is good, but several things about our experience make us never want to go back. The main reason why I would recommend avoiding is that they upsell EVERYTHING. I know there are things that warrant it, but we were not warned about any of it. First upsell: truffle fries, we knew they would be extra, the online menu says $4 but we were charged $5. Then my Bloody Mary, the menu said $10 but we were charged $14 because the waitress asked me if I wanted Tito’s and when I said yes, did not inform me it would be extra. Then the cold brew, my husband asked for almond milk as opposed to regular milk because he is lactose intolerant, we were charged an additional $2 for the tiny shot of almond milk and were not told almond milk was extra. To top it all off. We ordered shrimp as an appetizer and they gave it to another table. When we let them know we never go our shrimp they did offer to replace it, but at that point we already had our main course and had plans for later in the day. I ordered a he smoke salmon and the portion I received I don’t think warrant the $18 they were charging (see picture). This whole experience killed the vibe for me, which is really a shame because the place is cute and the food itself is not bad, but I do not go to restaurants that like to hide their additional charges from customers, I appreciate transparency.

Disappointed with the quality of the plates during our most recent visit. We went for lunch and most of the table ordered the BLT - main issue there was the bacon felt stale and cold, making it tough to eat. Then we received the steak frites which also arrived with the protein cold. We sent it back and received a plate within 2 minutes with slightly warmer protein and cold fries. The real issue is that we waited for our dishes for at least 30 minutes so we would anticipate it meant our food would be freshly made, however it all felt batched with little awareness for quality. We left disappointed and hoped for a better experience.

Very disappointed with the atmosphere and service. I made a reservation a week out for a dinner with my parents and we were given 2 tables both by the bathroom and kitchen. There was 2 rooms that both have very undesirable tables. The restaurant was completely empty and when we requested a different table they would not accommodate.

My family arrived a few minutes after opening. There was no other patrons in or outside. Upon walking in to ask for a table three of the bartenders barely provided any attention. Asking again, one of the employees reluctantly said we could sit outside. The bartenders resumed talking amonst themselves, and never returned. After waiting 20 minutes with not even a glass of water we decided To leave. To which none of the staff even realized. Will not be returning
