Better quality food for less cost than a standard fast food drive thru. Cheeseburger, fries, drink under $13!! Service was extremely fast. Fries were hot and crispy (ask for salted if you want em that way or dine in and use the table salt). Nostalgia factor is a huge plus to this place but the food also delivers.

Fantastic charcoal grilled burger. Chocolate malt was perfect. Beer battered onion to wings were also great. Staff was efficient and nice. Oldie but a goodie.

I got their jalapeno burger with a gluten free bun and I thought I went to heaven. It was so good! Fresh, good size, delicious AND gluten free! I can't wait to come back and try their other sandwiches too. For gluten free folks, they have burgers and a grilled chicken sandwich that can all be made with a gluten free bun. I also really liked the old school drive in vibe.

An Austin original! They make the best burgers because they cook them over a flame. Great onion rings and tots. Don’t skip on the vanilla shake. I always say I’m gonna try the fried chicken next time, but when I get to the counter I just can’t resist ordering a burger.

All Right, All Right, All Right!!! Yes the most famous hamburger spot in Texas. It is a must! From shooting one of the coolest movies, Dazed and Confused with our very own Matthew McConaughey, to hosting multiple car club gatherings throughout the month like Chrome Nights Hydraulics and Hamburgers, Hot Rod Nights to name a couple. This place here stands out from all the rest. Not only do they have the best food, but they have the best service and staff to go with it. Plenty of swag merch to take home also. Hats off to Top Notch Hamburger 1971 for your outstanding customer service and to the way you give back to our community by letting us gather to make new friends, see really cool cars, eating some classic foods with a classic vibes. I love bringing my friends and family here when they come in from out of town.. Thank you 🙏 🤙

This entire restaurant drips in nostalgia, even if you're not from ATX. Sure there's the Dazed & Confused connection, and that's enough of a reason to visit if you're a fan. But the entire experience, from the menu board on the wall instead of a screen, the exposed brick walls (and did I see wood paneling?) to the taste of the food brings me back to my childhood and younger road trip days. The food doesn't get 5 stars for being gourmet. It gets 5 stars of "I haven't had this in forever" even if you've never been there. It's every old small town diner, it's the old roadside grills we pulled the station wagon into. Get the fried chicken. Get the char-grilled burgers. Get a shake. Let them take you back.

L I V I N' truly captures the essence of Top Notch, a legendary hot spot where vibes, American cuisine, and car culture converge on an unparalleled level. My love affair with Top Notch and its entire atmosphere runs deep. It's not just a restaurant; it's an image that exudes quality in every aspect, evoking a sense of Texan home comfort with its BBQ/grilled offerings. Having been familiar with Top Notch from its appearance in Dazed N' Confused, I was naturally intrigued, but my connection to Texas runs far deeper, I can attest that Austin has always possessed a unique vibe (traffic notwithstanding!). Each time we pass through, the allure of Top Notch is irresistible, and finally, in late 2025, we've made it a recurring destination, experiencing pure satisfaction with every visit. The shakes are simply primo, the burgers are exquisite masterpieces, the fries sparkle with perfection, and the mashed potatoes are divine! Everything is undeniably top-tier, crafted with the finest ingredients and utmost care. So, if you seek that Top Notch experience, look no further than Top Notch itself. It's an adventure for the senses, a culinary journey that will leave you craving more. Click. Click. BOOM.

Had thought about coming here on a previous visit to Austin but did not make it here then so glad we came here this time. Got 2-piece Chicken Dinner (as recommended), Chicken Tenders Dinner and onion rings. Fried chicken was very good and we loved everything. Both meals came with gravy, and it went great with the chicken. There is traditional diner "car service" available but we dined in. Portions were good so we had a little leftover food "to go" with us. Friendly staff and fun atmosphere. Want to try a burger next time.

Best chocolate milkshakes! Best hamburgers in town. My mom had them in the 70's, and they are still just as good! Great date night spot, or place to take the fam. All kids meals are served in cool paper cars!

I finally did one of the most Austin/McConaughey things I could do. I stopped at Top Notch Burgers in North Austin and snatched up the famous jalapeño burger and fries that apparently Wooderson ordered in the 90s movie classic Dazed and Confused. The burger joint with dine in and carry out still has the drive in options creating a classic throwback serving fast and delish eats. Whether you’re visiting Austin or live here, if you don’t have this in your list of places to hit up, as Wooderson would say, “it’d be a lot cooler if you did”.

We come visit to Austin a few times a year and always stop here. It taste like a hamburger that has been cooked on the grill at home and is fresh. It’s a simple burger place that has really good hamburgers. Will always come here.

Meet up with the Austin Fiat Club, second Saturday of the month. The chicken tenders were perfect and the fries are all crunchy. Met a younger person who drove in from Houston because they saw Dazed and Confused.

You can’t go wrong with an old-school diner, and Top Notch definitely lives up to the name. I went mainly because it’s the diner featured in Dazed and Confused, but I ended up loving the whole experience. The burger was solid, but the chicken tenders were even better. They were crispy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. My son loved the meal that came in a little hot rod car, which made it extra fun. Great food, nostalgic atmosphere, and a piece of movie history all in one spot. I’d definitely go again.

The place is very local, is not fancy burger but is a well done burger. I order the jalapeño burger and it was really good and as a Mexican I felt the spicy in every bite. I recommend to people to come here if just want a casual burger experience with yourself or many your travel partner.

Great home style burger. Mom had the chicken fried chicken special, which I had a bite of & it was delicious. I’ve been to Top Notch 3 or 4 times & it’s been great every time! If you are interested in cinema, a scene from Dazed & Confused was filmed here.

Oh My Goodness Oh My Freaking Goodness!!!!!! Ok you guys! This place is worth driving for. If you're in Austin these and Sandy's Burgers are the best in town. I've been here 25 yrs. This place though!!!! You can park and eat, 50s drive in style. The ordering systems WORK! 50s music was blasting outside. Burgers are flame grilled 🤤😍 I meannnn, oh! The onion rings and tater tots were freaking good too! Burgers are pretty big, I got a double meat and couldn't get anywhere near finishing it. DON'T JUDGE! 😭😂

We loved the food here! The burgers were so flavorful and juicy. The corn dog on the kids menu was a nice big size my niece took half of hers home in her cool car carrier that the kids meals arrive in. The service was fast and friendly. The atmosphere was awesome. We played oversized Jenga outside on the patio and had a blast!! Kids can run around in the open area out back. Loved everything about this place! Will definitely return and for sure recommend.

As a native “north of the river” Austinite, I’ve had many Top Notch meals over the years. Nothing fancy just consistently good with shakes that taste like the strawberries were just picked that day to be churned into ice cream. Tonight, same food, but I sat in their hickory/bbq sauce on my seat…yuck! Yes, I should have looked but I was busy chatting with the rest of my party. I’m sure I’ll be back… but fyi, watch where you sit

Love the flame grilled burgers like they have always done. You can watch them cook the beef. Smells fantastic even as you drive by. The fried ocra hit the spot with the burger and main root lemonade. One of the best burgers in Austin.

I finally made it to Top Notch Burgers, one of the old school burger joints in the city. Over 54 years ago, Ray and Frances Stanish founded Top Notch, creating a restaurant with a throwback look set in the 1950s. One could imagine car hops whizzing around on roller skates delivering trays to couples out on a date in their father's cars. Sonic has tried to replicate that feel for younger generations. In 1971, Top Notch cooked their burgers over an open flame. Fire still sears the burgers five decades later. Their burgers are thin, like McDonald's but they have a bigger circumference. When I go back, I would do two patties because I like more meat on my burgers. They sell a ton of regular hamburgers and cheeseburgers, under the motto of "don't fix what isn't broken." Three of their specialty burgers also are popular including one I tried, their Top Pick Burger. The Top Pick comes with their special sauce, hickory sauce, grated cheese and onions. It is a messy burger, but full of flavor that meld well together. As I said, and adding an extra patty would have made it perfect. Their best selling burger is the Longhorn Special Burger which comes with two patties on it. Yes, you can add a third patty if needed (wanted). Their special sauce tips a set up of cheese, tomato, lettuce and onion. Besides burgers they do a lot of chicken, both breasts and tenders. You can get chicken sandwiches grilled or breaded and fried. They hand bread all their chicken in house. Top Notch also offers fried chicken dinners where you can get dark meat or a dark/light mixed plate. I tried their tater tots as a side with mu burger. They were perfectly cooked, crunchy on the outside and soft inside. My car hops said the onion rings very popular. He told me the mashed potatoes and gravy are must have with the dinner. He didn't lie. As I read other reviews about Top Notch, diners cited all the choices he suggested as their favorites. This really loved his job and stood behind what he was saying. He was proud he had worked at Top Notch for eight years, and he said I'm the baby here. The workers stay because it's a good business. Customers return because the food and service are consistently excellent. Prices are fair. What more can you ask for. Definitely worth your time to give them a try sometime for lunch or dinner!

I have lived in Austin all my life, watched Dazed and Confused, but have never eaten here. I was in the area today and figured I would give it a try. The burger was good, but nothing special. I make way better. I did like the onion rings and fries. The customer service was really good.

The ordering counter is Right there when you walk in. You place your order, they take your name and call you when it’s ready. You can split half fries, half onion rings = “frings” Their fries are like McDonald’s fries! Just add a little more salt. The onion rings are delicious and crispy. The classic cheeseburger was average, nothing stood out. $14.50 with a drink.

Top Notch Burger: A Solid, Classic Burger with Fresh Ingredients Top Notch Burger delivers on a simple, old-fashioned burger experience and proudly advertises their charcoal grilling. While the burger itself had a nice balance of juicy meat, melted cheese, and fresh veggies, it lacked the bold charcoal flavor I expected. A standout detail was the addition of shredded lettuce and tomato, which worked well with the other ingredients, adding a fresh, satisfying texture to each bite. The bun was toasted, though it could have used a bit more crunch to enhance the overall experience. The fries were decent but needed a bit more salt to bring out their flavor—good, but nothing particularly memorable. The onion rings, which I spotted at another table, looked promising, and I’ll definitely have to come back to try their other signature item: fried chicken. Overall, Top Notch serves up a straightforward, nostalgic burger with fresh ingredients. If you’re after a classic, no-frills meal, it’s worth a stop—just don’t expect a strong charcoal taste despite the advertising.

Top Notch Hamburgers is more than a meal, it is a time capsule. Pulling in during peak daylight made the entrance arrows a bit tough to see. The yellow blends with the Texas sun, so a repaint in a contrasting color might help. Once parked, ordering from a longer truck took a little maneuvering, but it worked out smoothly. The staff was genuinely friendly, attentive, and welcoming. Apple Pay was a major plus. The entire vibe is classic American drive in charm that feels rare today. The food was solid and reasonably priced at about thirteen dollars for a meal. Not extraordinary, not disappointing, just dependable. This is the kind of place you visit for the experience. Bring family, enjoy the atmosphere, and soak in a piece of traditional Americana that is getting harder to find.

I liked the old school drive thru feel. Pressed the drive thru call button, and service was quick. The people were very nice. I had the cheeseburger combo. The fries were hot, not salted, but were good with the ketchup. The burger was very cold, and was strangely not exciting. Has a very plain feel. It remindeded a lil bit of a short stop, but not as satisfying. Probably a step down from a short stop, and a burger king. I did like the material the solo cups were made out of. Like some kind of wax like feel. They have other options there other than burgers so something might be more enjoyable. They do have fried pies as well.

This is not going to be a popular review. The restroom and the eating area was not as clean as I would like. The staff were very nice and sweet. We had no issues getting what we ordered which was fried chicken with french fries and fried okra, a cheeseburger with onion rings. And then we had two chocolate milkshakes. The hamburger was okay, a little bit between a Whataburger and a P terries. The fried Chicken taste was good but the chicken meat was not as hot as it should have been and it seemed like it had been sitting under the warmer for a bit too long, by which I mean it was a little dried out for fried chicken. I don't like things spicy but it was also even a bland seasoning for me. The onion rings were amazing, big hot thick juicy onion with a delicious coating. The fries were the type I like, but they just weren't hot enough and not really very fresh. The fried okra was good . The chocolate milkshake was delicious. The food was fairly expensive for what we had. We paid a little over $50 including the milkshakes. We also had two sodas.

I am still hungry! I got burgers for 4people, and tenders, the burger was very thin, my pinky nail is bigger than the meat in the cheese burger. If you are going to charge $12.59 for the meal and I am still hungry, that’s crazy. The meat is smaller than what it used to be. My son’s tender meal was very dry, he said the bread was extremely dry. He liked the tenders. The onion rings also dry, no moisture. So overall it’s just the hype of the movie. I won’t be going back.

I used to love this place and I stopped going because it got So bad. After about seven years, I decided to try it again. This was probably the worst burger I've ever had. The meat patty was mostly globs of fat. Disgusting It was stone cold, and the Dr Pepper went straight down the sink because there is no syrup in it. There is mostly Carbonated water. The only thing that was halfway decent were the onion rings were actually hot. I don't know maybe McDonald's would be better. I haven't been to them in About 13 years. What a waste of my time and money. I honestly would not recommend anything.
