Wonderful experience with friendly service. The best thing I enjoyed was the rich history presented in all the decorative designs of the Diner experience. The menu style was original with the history on the front, reasonably priced breakfast, lunch, and dinner plates. Their deserts look amazing as well with their homemade beer claws! My wife and I enjoyed their breakfast and the hashbrowns were great!

I am the owner of 4TH Demention Construction and a local guide. This place is so great not only is the pricing more than reasonable the staff does such an amazing job even when there busy. There are service animal friendly. Hmie the Waiter there is awesome. The portion sizes are absolutely huge most of you will get or need a to go box. From a 10oz burger to a huge toco salad this place definitely give you more than your money is worth. The flavor of everything I have ordered here witch is quite a bit because I return here often is spot on I give a thumb up 👍 to the cooks here. They also serve adult beverages. I love this Black Bear Diner, it's by far my favorite out of the several I've visited. I've always had a good experience here. The food is always delicious - waffles being my personal favorite. And we've always had a friendly server. Sometimes service is a little slow, but never enough to deter us from coming back. Overall this restaurant is friendly, clean and well maintained.

Service is Amazing and so quickly seated. Our Server Javier was so attentive and made our Experience more successful. Food was perfect and so tasty. Wow. This diner was not only beautiful but had tons of personality. I believe this was the highest rated breakfast place I could find while staying in Bakersfield. I ordered the smoked beef brisket Benedict with roasted potatoes and geez it was so damn good! It also comes with a side of fruit, which consisted mostly of melon. The service was spectacular! We had a server named Ashley who was so bubbly and took great care of us! Everyone here was super friendly. I could not recommend a better breakfast place than this.

Only order their country fried steak cause this is pretty much the only place in Bakersfield where i actually like them.. tender, good flavor, not too much breading & great country gravy! So the five stars is for their country fried steak & country potatoes.

Went in the morning during a weekday it was busy but no wait to be seated. Hostess was attentive. Portions are massive, food was good. Had to send it back to be reheated though. They serve breakfast lunch and dinner all day.

I’ve eaten at a lot of Black Bear dinners all over the state and Arizona. My meals have always been great with professional waitstaff. Wherever you’re at if there is a BBD, you can bet they are a staple in that community. Employees are always friendly, nice and professional, food is always exceptional. If only other restaurants could follow BBD strategy, they would be better off. I had the Volcano 🌋 breakfast, it was excellent. Andre, was my server, he did a great job. Hats off to the management you guys really have “ understood the assignment!”

Carolyn’s service was absolutely amazing from start to finish. She is genuinely one of the sweetest people we’ve ever met, and she made my entire family feel so welcomed and cared for. She was always attentive, checking in at the right moments and making sure we had everything we needed without ever being overwhelming. I am a vegetarian and asked our server Natalie if they had other options than the garden burger for vegetarians. I asked if they could do the taco salad her response was ‘ I don’t see why not ‘ . My taco salad was fantastic. The presentation was unbelievable. It looked as though it should be on the cover of a gourmet magazine! In a world with such negatives it was nice to see the welcoming smiling face of Natalie’s .Eddy the cook did a wonderful job with our meal .

I went with a group of about 21. They were very accommodating and the food was delicious. The portions are quite large. One of the ladies in the group I was with ordered the Taco Salad, She was not expecting such a LARGE salad. She ended up with 2 or 3 to go containers to take home her leftovers. I had a Chicken Avocado Club on sourdough with Sweet Potato Fries, it was really good. I wish I would have asked for the bread to be grilled.

1st Visit: Dinner --- --- The interior seems to be outdated and needs a makeover, for example the upholstery of the booth benches. The service staff was motivated and friendly but couldn't explain us the menu (first-time customers). There seems to be a public WiFi, see photo, but the staff apparently does not have any knowledge about the password. The menu is overwhelming and too much to process without some pictures (the menu does not have any pictures, see photo) or maybe a smaller menu specifically for new customers. Some items are also confusingly named, for example "Bigfoot Chicken Fried Steak" is 100% beef and no chicken at all. I tried the chocolate cream pie 🥧, see picture. Normally, I am a good (European) eater but I had to give up after about 40% of the cream pie 🥧 due to "too much sugar and too much cream". Our main meal looked pretty plain, no eye candy 🍬. The taste also was plain, for example the gravy did not have much of a taste. PS: I am a German citizen and I am most likely biased regarding taste and expectations. 2nd Visit: Breakfast --- --- Our breakfast experience was great: Very very attentive staff and good food choices.

Food is BIG, and decent; typical diner style. Gravy is good, but not great. Service is good. Would have gave it only 3 stars except that the bear claws are on par with the best I have ever tried, and they have 3 different flavors of hot sauce at the table.

The food was just ok. My server did a very good job of keeping my coffee full. I just didn't feel the place was really clean.

This was my first time trying out this place and I'm going to make it my last. The French toast that I ordered was ok it wasn't the best but it was ok but the honey dew in my fruit bowl was nasty it tasted like it was almost expired. In addition the menu is just an old news paper with every dish listed which I didn't like. Service was slow and the prices were expensive I'm talking $10 and up and the burgers were $18 which is insane. Honestly I'd rather go to Denny's than this place.

Food was delicious and server was excellent. Big portions. Not 5 stars because the hostess (manager) was speaking to us in Spanish and we’re clearly white. And everyone around me was handed a Mother’s Day carnation except me. So I don’t know what that was about. But other than that the food and waiter were great.

The biscuits were over cooked, our waiter was stretched thin between tables and we were there at 8:20am. But the portions of food were very sufficient for the price with the exception of their omelettes. Over all, it was a good spot to enjoy family and friends and eat good food.

Have not been here in a couple years. Three of us had breakfast and all had fruit as a side. Unfortunately, we were all served melon that wasnt ripe and tough. Another plate had a raw in the center biscuit, but a great veggie omelette. Another had a great breakfast burrito. I ordered the corned beef hash, which stated slow cooked corned beef fried with potatoes. But, the corned beef was shredded and fried to the point that it was falling through my fork. I had to use a spoon and it was like jerky. The eggs though we're good. Just no consistency with the dishes. Did we hate our meals, no. But, you don't pay for a meal to skip portions on your plate. Staff was really nice and attentive.

Maybe we came on a day when their supplies/ingredients were en route to their store. We tried to place our orders based on what they advertised but were told by our server that the items were not available like I wanted a mojito but they don't have champagne and other food ingredients. 3 or 4 of our orders were not available. Other than that, everything went fine.

Went to the one in Bakersfield. The service was great and the dinner was delicious. The problem was the banana cream pie. The whipped cream on the top had an artificial/ chemical taste to it and the banana filling was so thick/firm and had an unpleasant texture. I threw it out after two bites. I've had it at locations in different cities before and it was so good. I don't know if they changed the recipe but it was not good and won't be getting it again.

One BIG BIG downside: They will not allow you to order off of a kid's menu if you've had gastric sleeve or bypass surgery. So don't bother asking. They'll tell you to order off of the regular menu and just order less. They would rather LOSE money than accommodate you. Even though there slogan is, "Spend your hard earned dollars with us. We appreciate you." Thankfully our waitress had more sense than her management. She was an absolute sweetheart. And we wish her luck in her studies. The rest: The food is plentiful. The flavor of the burger that I ate was a bit lacking. However, I have come for breakfast as well and their gravy is really good. I would recommend the chicken fried steak and biscuits and gravy. The atmosphere was open and not cluttered. But, it was also a bit messy for a non rush hour. Their menus are clevery disguised as newspapers with some pretty cool facts. However, the paper I got today was worn and tearing. It felt like 6 people read the paper before me. Definitely needed to wash my hands before I ate after that one. The service was friendly and punctual.

Black Bear Diner is always my go to when I'm coming back home from a long road trip! Delicious food and big portions are always a great way to start my morning commute back. This location however disappointed 😞 I ordered the usual Country Fried Steak which was good, but the onion rings seemed old and stale. No taste at all! Steamed Vegetables somehow managed to be flavorless. Our other tray was a chopped steak and egg and the meat was so dry! Not edible at all, we ended up leaving without even finishing half of our food. The country potatoes that came with it were definitely not boiled enough. The waiter was very friendly and prompt though! Only reason it's not a 1 star review.

This place was pretty bad. The burger was good apparently. The fries were decent as well, according to my fiance. The eggs Benedict was super plain. The sauce was nothing special and very very skimpy for everything on it. I didn't even taste it really. From what I got on the knife was so plain. It just tasted like egg and butter, nothing to acidify the taste or make it special. The hashbrowns are an atrocity to cuisine. Do you see how thickly they shred them? Yeah... that makes for big, chewy bites on the surface and overly soft in the middle. Gross..the English muffin was not even warmed. It was so dry.

We frequently visit after church on Sundays. This past Sunday was horrible! Sat down at table and within minutes my whole right arm was itching! I got attacked by a mosquito or something. The meatloaf I ordered was like mush!! The mashed potatoes were on the watery side. I couldn't eat the food I ordered. Never again. The waitress was nice and said I wasn't the only one who complained about the meatloaf.

I had dinner here with some friends, the temperature was 65 F, service was slow, my meal arrived 13 minutes later than the others, and for saying sorry I got an extra piece of meat! (What a deal!) . As you may see from the picture the Seasonal Vegetable where picket today from the can. Said that the potatoes were pretty good and had a lot of fun with my friends, that’s why atmosphere is a solid five.

We walked in to grab a bite while on a road trip. Young stocky guy with a peach fuzz mustache walks up and says "2?" We says yes please. He then says "this way". He takes us to a booth where I immediately notice water spilled. Not a big deal, so I say "could you please wipe the table". He says "what?" I say, "there's water on the table" and he looks as if he doesn't believe me. I said "there's water on the table" and point to where the water is. He says "you want me to wipe the table" as if my request is audacious. I say "yes please". He goes to grab a towel, wipes the table, bumps the tray with creamers and some creamers fall, doesn't pick them up, then walks away. The waiters were very nice and pleasant, this guy, horrible welcome to the restaurant. Immediately made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Will never return to this diner again. Do not recommend.

Poor management, we waited 40min for food and it was cold. I couldn't even have a bite of my French toast, they were cold and very hard. I don't think they have enough employees to handle the restaurant.

Stopped to eat at this diner last Friday, took a rode trip to drop our grandson off to college. Very disappointed with the service, rude staff and food. Although breakfast looked good in the pictures it wasn’t so good🙁 We wont be eating here again, on our way back we ate at the Wendy’s across the highway! Yummy😋

Went Friday night for the all you can eat fish fry. Arrived at 6 pm. Ordered the fish was told they were out. They didn't start serving the fish fry until 4 pm. So it was only on the menu for 2 hours. So I ordered the fish and chips. It was a tasteless greasy pice of crap. Really disappointed. The place wasn't that busy but still waited 30 minutes for our order. They need to get better.

UPDATE - ordered from here about 2 weeks ago. The apple pie had mold under the crust. When I explained what happened to the manager she said I must've gotten the last one because the whole bakery case was empty and she was in the middle of making more apple pies. 🙄 then, instead of offering a refund she offered me another pie 🙄 She clearly had no plans of considering how they are keeping track of the age of their bakery items. Not going back. Large portions of delicious home style food! Love the casual cozy atmosphere. Service was good and pricing was appropriate. Had the country fried steak... yummy but definitely needed a box for leftovers.

The waitress was great not her fault the kitchen sucks! It really has gone downhill. This is the third time I go in and they don’t measure up to their own standards! Ordered THE GRIZZ this is their flagship breakfast BTW. What they served up should have never left their kitchen they gave me 2 eggs 1.5sausage and a burnt piece of ham I was disappointed upset, and my appetite disappeared! It’s suppose to be 3 eggs 2 sausages 2 Bacons and a piece of ham. What they served up is in the picture below 👇

We found a black short hair in our food! The meatloaf didn’t taste like meat and the broccoli was all dried out! The coffee was like warm and watered down. Then we got a Chocolate Cake to go and came home to eat it to find another small black public hair in there!!! So gross!!🤮🤮🤮 we will NOT be going back!!!!

There was a cockroach in the table. Killed it and showed it to the waitress. Preceded to charge me full price. Spoke to the manager and asked “well did it climb on the food?” We had to leave and they gave me 20%. Will never go back.

Cute place. Service was honestly abysmal and they took a super long time with our food. Once I finally did get food the server handed me a plate that was so hot my skin started bubbling later. And the food was so bland. We won't be back.

I never write reviews but I really think I needed to this time. My husband & I went yesterday for lunch & we were so disappointed with the service. The waitress never came around to ask if we needed anything but she constantly checked up on the people behind us & even called them “VIPS”. We couldn’t get refills, napkins, and anything we did need my husband had to get up to ask someone else. The food took about 40 minutes & it wasn’t even busy. To make things worse when my husband walked by the counter area close to the kitchen he almost stepped on a little roach! Little roach equals A LOT of roaches somewhere so they must have a problem. Never coming back here.

Online and the sign at the door states they open at 06:00am. We arrived at 6:15. The doors were locked. My husband knocked on the door was told another 25 minutes. He told the person who opened the door that it says you guys open at 6, the response, that’s not to eat. Maybe the time should change then. And be more consistent because a few days prior we were able to call in an order pick it up around the same time.

Ordered online chicken fried steak dinner asked for gravy for my fries and fries extra crispy, plus there was no gravy on the chicken fried steak whatsoever. I asked the server about the gravy and the extra salad dressing and he assured me it was all there. I also ordered berry cobbler ala mode and they forgot the the ice cream which I was charged extra for. I'm so disappointed in the lack of attention they pay to the online orders. Total fail on this one
