Delicious food from the grill. The fried potatoes bravado was incredible!! Staff was extremely friendly and provided quick service. The live music was very nice, not loud and boisterous. Honestly really impressed with this place, excited to come back!

The food here is incredible. The staff are great. I’m quite the foodie and this place knocks it out of the park. Eggs Benedict. Crab cakes. Great drink menu. You will not be disappointed. I come here every Sunday for brunch

What an amazing dinner! We walked into this cafe with 12 women and we were met with kindness, gratitude and the best service. A mom/daughter team took our older, kept drinks flowing, and fed us delicious meals of hamburgers, crab cakes, meat skewers, soup, and much more. They even brought out a bunch of dessert boxes at the end just to make it easier in case we wanted to purchase anything. We were so impressed! If you're looking for a place with wonderful food and even better service, look no further. If you make it before 7pm, you can even stop into the distillery next door and get some bourbon. Highly recommend!

What a great place to grab a bite and a bourbon! Everyone was so friendly here! Adjacent to VA Foothills Disterilly, they have a nice variety of hot and cold items, made to order, desserts, pastries, coffee and a large drink cooler. Everything was fresh and flavorful. Generous portions. I loved their hummus! Indoor and outdoor seating, dine in or to go Service was fast and space was very clean! Ample parking Overall a great visit! What we tried: *HUMMUS PLATTER-Handmade Hummus, Raw + Grilled Vegetables, Focaccia, Olive Oil *GRILLED VEGETABLE PLATE- Vegetable Skewers, Hummus Choice of Side + Sauce, Sliced Focaccia *PINCHO PLATTER- Choose Three Skewers Beef, Chicken, Fish, Shrimp, Choice of Side + Sauce, Sliced Focaccia *Dessert- gluten free cake and kentucky derby pie My rating rationale +1 Service +1 Food~Taste/flavor/quality +1 Presentation +1 Atmosphere/vibe +1 Value

Stopped in for breakfast and the brisket biscuit was delicious! It would be helpful to have a coffee menu by the food menu. Service was great otherwise!

Had a great dinner at Exchange Café! I had the Exchange Burger on focaccia—super flavorful—and the Ponchos San Juan beef skewers with patatas bravas were excellent. They made a special mac and cheese for the kids, which they loved. I also took the Soul Healing Soup to go—can’t wait to try it. The Fireman’s Chicken was perfectly tender and juicy, served with rice and focaccia. Finished the meal with a classic Old Fashioned. The staff was so nice and friendly—really made the experience even better. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area!

We were visiting the area for the Steeplechase and happened upon this place during our stay. The food is A-MAZING. Unique, but familiar enough that even the pickiest of eaters would be willing to try something. There were 6 of us, 4 adults and 2 13 year olds and we each tried something different. We enjoyed it so much, we came back for dinner the following night. The ham biscuit, the exchange burger, the BLT, and the salmon skewer sandwich were a few we tried. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere is casual and relaxed. If you stop in, enjoy the stories these folks share and do NOT miss the desserts. They are phenomenal!

We were not expecting this quality of food and boooy were we happily surprised!! The food is absolutely out of this world! Valentines dinner couldn’t of been better!

What a gem we stumbled across during our Mother's Day wknd in Barboursville! A spotless and inviting space with great vibes, perfect coffee/latte options (even non dairy milk, including oat milk) and incredible food. Lots of indoor + outdoor seating, extremely friendly service and just beautiful touches everywhere. As a gluten free/dairy free diner, I LOVED the healthy and flavorful chicken soup and the almond flour pastry option. We had 3 small kids in tow, so the water bottle/cup fill station was a great convenience. Next time we hope to get there early enough for breakfast -- that was the only bummer for us, showing up at 11 AM. Thank you so much for opening up this wonderful cafe that we'll look forward to visiting each time we head to the foothills!

We ordered food to go and everything was absolutely AMAZING!! The food was incredible and the drinks were amazing as well. The lady that served us was extremely nice. I can’t recommend this place enough!!! We got a Carmel latte, iced mocha, bacon breakfast biscuit, brisket breakfast taco, and a chocolate Carmel tart and it was perfect.

My wife and I had a wonderful lunch at the Exchange Cafe yesterday. The Pincho Patter, which contains 3 grilled skewers (I chose the chicken, beef and fish, which was salmon yesterday) along with rice and a side (I chose potatoes "bravas"), was phenomenal. Loved the chimicurri and romesco sauces that came on meats. We also enjoyed the Soul Healing Chicken soup as a shared app. My wife throughly enjoyed the Cured Sandwich. We will definitely stop by again when we are in the area and would highly recommend to anyone checking out the nearby wineries. Thanks for a great meal!

Amazing breakfast!! I had the smoked brisket burrito and a cappuccino and both were delicious. The ingredients were fresh and flavorful, especially the soft corn tortillas. We also tried the gluten free torte de Santiago and it was well worth the calories. The staff were friendly and helpful. We we will definitely be back!

This was my first visit to this wonderful establishment, and it won't be my last. I loved the atmosphere and the food! I had the burger, made with locally sourced beef, and the squash. Others in my party also loved what they ordered. Reasonably priced, and the service was great as well.

We were on our way to UVA and decided to take a small detour to check out this cafe after seeing its great Google reviews — and we’re so glad we did! It was totally worth the extra drive. The food was absolutely amazing, the coffee was just as good, and the service was warm and welcoming. We’d definitely recommend this spot.

We stopped here when traveling through the area and it absolutely blew us away! Immediately when we walked in, we received a warm welcome from the staff, and the place looked clean and well decorated. The eggs benedict, steak and eggs, and lattes we ordered were absolutely phenomenal. I am so happy we decided to stop here for breakfast and would highly recommend this place to anyone in the area.

We're visiting the Barbourville winery and happened on the Exchange cafe for breakfast, the biscuit sandwich was very good, then stopped by at the end of the day for a quick bite, the smoked skewers with veggies so good! Really liked the focaccia and dessert too.

Perfect light food for wedding reception. Highly recommend chicken salad, wraps, pimento cheese, fruit and veggie tray!! They have been doing this from there for 26 years and have it down to a science. Their Tea is on point! #win

The food was awesome! Wow! So delicious. I also want to commend the restaurant on having two baby changing tables available in each bathroom and a child’s size toilet seat — it’s the little things!! But, it’s what makes the restaurant environment better for families and an example of things that will keep us coming back. Thanks!

Absolutely delicious sandwiches. Laid back atmosphere. Shaded outdoor eating with fans. A must try! Derby pie- yummm! Kudos to whoever created the menu - everything sounds great, I can’t wait to come back and try something else!

Newly opened spot! We stopped here by chance, trying to find a lunch spot, and it was the best decision. They have in-store brewed coffee, lattes, chais, and many other drinks. An array of food choices. The VA ham biscuit I got was delicious. The biscuit was house made, with a well seasoned ham, and fig spread. The people are friendly and the ambiance is sweet. Definitely a wonderful addition to Orange county. :)

Wow, great sandwich and salad! I don't think I've ever left a review for a salad, but this one was fantastic. Farm fresh all over, super tender and tasty greens - so good we're still talking about it! And their "Speedie" sandwhich - perfectly seasoned and grilled chicken, fresh tomato and tender greens on housemade bread = awsome!

Was driving by, to grab dinner down the road and saw this place was open and decided to stop in. Man we're we glad we did. We preferred the hummus appetizer and it was great, except for the radishes...the only place those should go is in the trash. ;) My wife got the Pincho platter, with tostones and I ordered the half firehouse chicken with potatoes bravas. So much flavor... We will definitely be coming here often. Cannot wait to try their brunch.

Oh my gosh, I think I just had the best burger in my life! The presentation was amazing, as you know, you always eat with your eyes first! I believe they specialize in catering, and it shows! They are (rightfully) very proud of every dish they make! I can't wait to go back and really splurge!

The food is top-quality and feels like something you’d find in a major city — thoughtful, elevated, and consistently excellent. If you didn’t know it was here, you’d never expect this level of dining. Worth seeking out which I do on a weekly basis.

I absolutely love visiting this place! The coffee is consistently excellent, and I can never resist the incredibly tasty biscuits. Furthermore, the staff here truly make the experience special with their friendly and helpful attitudes. It's always a pleasure to be served by such wonderful people. This is such a wonderful cafe to stop by! The biscuit was delicious and so was the coffee. The cafe is warm, and has plenty of places to sit, which is so nice after being in the cold. They have many breakfast and lunch options as well as coffees and lattes. Their fridges are fully stocked with sodas, water, beer, wine and they also sell bags of coffee and some dry grocery goods. The staff are all very kind and welcoming.

Today, my wife and I decided to treat ourselves to lunch on the first day of school for our kiddos, and we chose Exchange Café. What a fantastic decision! I ordered the Pincho Sampler—featuring chicken, beef, and shrimp with a vibrant chimichurri sauce, accompanied by San Juan rice, focaccia bread drizzled with olive oil, and crispy fried tostones served with garlic aioli. Every bite was absolutely delicious. The pinchos instantly transported me back to my time living in Luquillo, Puerto Rico, where I’d buy pinchos from the local vendors right at the beach. This meal brought back those wonderful memories in the best way possible. To top it off, the owner Craig came by to check on us and ended up chatting with us about our families and experiences. It was really nice of him to take the time to connect personally—it added a warm and genuine touch to our visit. If you’re looking for a spot that offers authentic flavors with a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, Exchange Café is a must-visit. Can’t wait to come back!

We live in Gordonsville and were looking for a breakfast alternative on a Sunday Morning. The Exchange Cafe fit the bill nicely with coffees, breakfast biscuits with egg, cheese, mushrooms, etc. Somehow the chef cooked up some breakfast potatoes even with one of the grills down, going the extra mile there. My wife enjoyed her iced coffee and found bottles of wine to gift too. We will be back again I am sure.

First time here and stopped for lunch. The soul warming chicken soup had tender shreds of chicken breast, kale, carrots, and parsnips in a luscious turmeric infused broth. The beef vegetable soup was scrumptious with tender beef, carrots, onions, zucchini, parsnips, and corn in a qell seasoned broth. They both were accompanied by pillowy, warm slices of focaccia bread drizzled with olive oil and a sprinkling of sea salt. We will definitely be back!

I just ate here for the first time and it was so so good! I had the berry summer salad with grilled shrimp. Every ingredient was so fresh and delicious. I even asked where the lettuce was from because it was just that good. (Unfortunately, the head chef had already left for the evening - but the server I spoke thought it might be from Cavalier Produce? It was clear this produce was not from a big box grocery store 🥬 ) I sat on the patio at dusk, surrounded by gorgeous flowers. What a lovely experience!

Stop in for a late lunch and I'm glad I did. First time here and the impression was very good. I had a burger that was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Service was great as well. Seating is limited inside but there are several tables on the patio. I'm sure I'll be back.

5 stars all around. Especially the Pincho Platter. The chicken and tuna skewers were AMAZING, and the sides (patatas bravas and rice pilaf) also great. Really, the meat was some of the best I’ve had in a while at any restaurant. My only regret is I’m full and can’t finish eating everything on my plate! Keep it up guys!

The chimmichurri and other sauce on it was delish..it was a nice portion of chicken, shrimp, and steak and it was cooked perfectly!! my side was the plantains . YUMMM. Hannah is easily one of the most welcoming and attentive people you’ll meet. I’m a regular here, and every time I walk in, she greets me by name like I just stepped into a family member’s house. It’s that kind of energy that starts the day off right. You can’t miss the smell of the slow-drip coffee brewing — strong, fresh, and exactly how coffee should be. Now, Norma the cook deserves serious credit. A restaurant’s only as good as the kitchen, and she’s the reason I keep coming back. Her brisket tacos are on another level made with real tortillas right in front of you, and the eggs? Pretty sure they’re farm eggs —I saw the brown shells (don’t quote me, but I trust my instincts). Except Sundays that’s biscuits and gravy day for me. Oh, and Jared’s cool too. He holds it down lol. Solid people, great food, and good energy every time. Can’t ask for more.

What a sweet boutique place we happened on while driving through the area. The ingredients were fresh and seasoned so well. And the dishes spectacular! More than accommodating staff which helped me customize a meal for a camp outing. Do not forget to complete your order with a yummy coffee/espresso and a homemade dessert. Out of this world😋 Will be grabbing dinner and dessert to take home in a few days.

Just had brunch here on a Sunday. FANTASTIC experience. Was greeted by a friendly staff member. Person taking order was lovely. Food was DELICIOUS. Service was excellent. Thank you!! This community is DESPERATE for great places like this to eat. The Unionville/Lake of the Woods area would love a place like this.

Had dinner here on a Wednesday evening. Not crowded at all. Everything was excellent. Wife had the Mahi with mixed vegetables. I had the 1/2 chicken and parmesan potatoes. Both came with rice and the best focaccia bread we’ve ever had. Not your typical ‘cafe’. More like an upscale restaurant put into a cafe like atmosphere. Desserts made fresh daily. Can’t wait to come back for breakfast and/or lunch. Service was great. Everyone was super friendly and spoke with the chef who is incredibly talented. Looking forward to trying the fried chicken sandwich next time. Second visit on 9 Aug 2025. Had the fried chicken sandwich. Best chicken sandwich I know of. My favorite used to be at Lilly Pearl's in Richmond, but this has them beat. Served on the focaccia bread (I'd prefer a brioche bun, but I get it since they serve the focaccia bread with other dishes). I'd also prefer long pickle slices instead of the small hamburger ones, but again, my preference and doesn't diminish from the overall great taste of the sandwich. For $12 with a side salad, this is a great deal as the sandwich is huge. Will definitely be back and happy that I can have a great fried chicken sandwich only 15 min away instead of having an hour drive to Richmond. If you haven't stopped by this place, don't sleep on it.

The food is always amazing and the ingredients are quality. Everyone is friendly and kind. When I’m having a bad day, I’ll order the maple cured salmon with simply fried potatoes and it turns my whole mood around. I love trying the specials and it’s the best biscuit I’ve ever had. If you order a breakfast biscuit, get egg, bacon, and brisket.

We stayed in gordansville for the week and ate her for lunch 3 times, very difficult to please all of us (family of 4) so this was an absolute score ! The chicken sandwich will knock your socks clean off lol ! Burgers are juicy and delicious! Coffee is smoother than a Starbucks! Really can't go wrong here ! If there was 6th star id click on it ! Do yourself a favor and stop in you won't be disappointed!

Absolute gem of a place. My husband and I have been at least a dozen times since they opened and the food (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) has always been top notch. The staff is super friendly, and the outdoor seating is perfect in warm weather if you want to bring your pup along. A few notes I want to make to address a couple of bad reviews I saw. 1) this is NOT a formal sit-down restaurant. You order at the counter and they will bring your food out to your table (you have a little number marker so they can find you). And they will clear your table if you leave it out, but my husband and I usually clear our own since it's really easy to do so. Don't expect waiters to be checking up on you throughout the meal, it's not that kind of place. 2) there is plenty of indoor seating! Whoever said there was none, obviously didn't walk into the back room where there were a bunch more tables. I've never seen it so busy you couldn't get a table inside. 3) The portions are perfectly sized and the sauces are delicious. If you want an oversized plate of tasteless slop then go to your local chain restaurant. Just leaves more delicious wood grilled food for me!

L
Lindsey Sequeira

My friends and I were excited to try the distillery next door and after a great cocktail, we slid across the patio to the cafe next door. We saw they had indoor seating but we chose to sat outside on the patio. The service was just as great as the food. I had the grilled vegetable plate and was blown away by how delicious everything was, especially the hummus! We also had a pork sandwich, which was fantastic, and grilled shrimp and steak skewers, which again, came in generous portions and were absolutely delicious! Between the casual vibe, the food and the location (perfect for folks who live north of Charlottesville who don't want to brave heading into town for a great dinner or folks driving back from the wineries) we can't wait to go back!

Fantastic! We stopped in for dinner and immediately impressed with the local organic ingredients they showcase in describing dishes on their menu. . They offer a full coffee menu along with sandwiches, soups, and entrees. Wine and full bar beverages are also available. We enjoyed our meal - had wonderful service and surprised by live entertainment of mellow acoustic guitar. Divine spot! We will be back!

E
Eric Santure

This little cafe has amazing food. GET THE PARM FRIES, they're soft on the inside but so crispy on the outside. The food really is elevated compared to any other cafe it's size. I also had the cured meat sandwich and it was HUGE. They also make killer cocktails, with a nice selection of bourbon to pick from. There's a nice selection of regular and non-alcoholic beer in addition to wine. If I lived closer, I'd go all the time. Definitely worth a stop in if you're in the area. Kid friendly and diaper changing station in the bathroom.

C
Carolyn Farruggio

Had the burger on focaccia and the chicken sandwich on focaccia- best we have ever had! The toasted focaccia and fresh burger took it to another level. The fries were amazing as well- oh, and the cappuccino and latte- wonderful! Service was excellent- only our second time here and we will definitely be back! Want them to cater our children’s weddings- and none of them are even engaged yet😂

Exchange Cafe is my go to spot every Friday night. Julie and her sweet daughter are the sweetest! And the food is amazing! I’ve never had a bad meal or service here. Chill atmosphere, delicious food, and great cocktails. You’ve gotta give it a try. Yo won’t regret it!

J

Julie is always so welcoming … Sam an incredible chef!! The Pincho platter amazing- best shrimp and grilled veggies ever - I have no idea how portobello mushrooms can taste like that, but they were like a slice of heaven. The food is always artistically presented. Thank you for the special gift of a place to get a great meal and company in the middle of the country. Have been regular customers since they’ve opened and always exceed our expectations!

Very expensive for a counter sales place. At the time we ate there, their online menu created sticker shock at the counter with some items $4 to $8 more than we expected. My wife had a salmon plate that was not on the online menu. A tiny piece of salmon for the $24 but was cooked to perfection. I had the Pincho (skewers) platter, steak and chicken. Both were cooked perfectly and you could really taste the wood smoke. The chimichurri was very good as well. I wanted the Churrasco but wasn't going to take the risk at $32 on a place I had never eaten at on a preparation that is traditionally skirt steak. If its done as well as the skewers I'm sure it's delicious but still pretty steep for a counter sales type place. But hey, they are catering to people with money like the winery and distillery tourists who are ready to blow a wad of cash. The sides were fine and the bread they serve is good. The bad reviews must have been an off-day. We were expecting a real sit-down restaurant but its more like a fast casual counter sales place. Like a convenience store/deli that just happens to serve top notch food. VERY nice and helpful people and the food was ready very quickly (it was middle of the afternoon and not busy). The seating area inside is no frills...and no cushions. They do have outdoor seating as well. We came here as a destination because we bought a coupon/certificate that saved some money and we hadn't been here. I dont think we will go out of our way to come here in the future (cost and ambiance) but if in the area otherwise would not hesitate to eat here again. It looked like they had more sandwiches on the menu than they show online. I forgot to take a picture of the menu and prices but my guess is, if everything else has gone up, so have they. I'll bet they are all tasty though. The drink menu seems reasonable, but I got the Old fashioned at $10 and it was OK...I got maybe 4 good swallows out of it though, so, not much to it. Paid for a pour of the bourbon from the distillery next door and again got maybe 4 good swallows out of it for $16. While it had an outstanding aroma, it wasn't worth the money taste-wise and we didn't go next door and buy any because I'm sure they are "very proud" of their bourbon and charge accordingly. It was better to spend the $16 to know rather than learn the hard way buying a bottle blind. It looked like a well appointed space catering to that aforementioned "tourists with money to spend".

Exchange Cafe is right next to the distillery and has a very impressive cocktail selection. The fireman’s chicken is phenomenal. The squash was a little undercooked this time but perfect the last time I had it. The dining area can use some work, looks like gas station dining and the ac was broken, I believe anyways cause it was a bit uncomfortable temperature wise. The food is great so it is worth a visit.

My family really likes the food options, it's delicious and there is something for each of us, including me the vegetarian. Staff is friendly. I would give it a 5 out of 5 except for 2 reasons: (1) the last few times we've ordered carryout, ingredients were missing from my meal. Tonight my husband brought home our take out order and I ordered the grains and super greens salad. It was missing the nuts, dried fruits and cheese - all which help make it a more healthy and satisfying meal for a vegetarian. Previously, we were missing the jasmine rice from a platter, and prior to that, we were shortened 1 order of potatoes. This stinks because it's a bit expensive, especially when you don't get everything. (2) we've never been able to get someone to pick up the phone to answer a question or to ask them about our missing items. Just a note for others - double check everything before you head home with carryout.

I got the Pincho Platter with shrimp, fish and steak and veggies as a side. Mmm mm mm. It's very good, seasoned well and their focaccia is sooo fluffy and soft, delish. Nice little spot.

We had a nice lunch experience at the Exchange. I had the Speedie sandwich. The chicken was flavorful and the bread was delicious. My wife had a 1/4 chicken with salad and said the chicken was excellent. The service was very friendly and the owner even stopped by the table. There are plenty of different places to choose from for seating especially outside. Good luck with the air conditioning.

Such a great little gem. Very modern decor. The employees made me feel like I was extra welcomed and as if I’ve grown up here my whole life. The only reason 4 and not 5 stars due to needing to wipe our own table off and the bathroom trash was overflowing. We will be back.

Take note: expensive. A PBJ is $10 as an entree. $30 for fish. Real wood fire cooking but you order at a counter like a convenience store.

Ill start with the meats were tasty. First time there and had higher hopes for the restaurant since it will be very close to where we are moving. Found the hummus low grade store bought & slathered in the same sauces that they put on everything & served it with the same cold soggy focaccia they serve everything with..Inedible. Husband had the steak that was delicious and cooked perfectly, I had a quarter chicken and it was also tasty and juicy. The problem is the weird mushy rice they serve it with, and again both were placed on the sauces and served with more soggy cold focaccia. Pushed the bread & rice aside and wiped the sauces off the meats and ate the meats and coleslaw which was good. Needless to say we went home and had a second dinner because we were still hungry. Service was very friendly & place is very clean but they need to step up the side dishes and stop hiding the food with those sauces. The menu is all over the place and made no sense. It was a weird experience.

Now I will give it that food tastes good… but…. The portion was extremely small for a “platter”. I paid $20!! For 3 “skewers” and a side of vegetables. So I was a little upset when my food came out with a portion size for a small child! I took a photo next to a MINI Gatorade bottle and they are almost equal in size. What a shame!! Not worth $20 I can guarantee that.

No inside seating. No heaters for outside seating. (Evening in early March) Items were no longer available on standard menu and no substitute was offered. Food is good but kind of pricy server less than friendly. Do better
