I dined here with my husband and daughter tonight (Saturday) around 5:30pm and it was perfect. Waited in line for about 10 min and then the owner took our order - he was delightful. I love that it is all family recipes. And the vibe is casual and peaceful. The oysters with mignonette and fish and chips were amazing. We also had clam chowder which was alright. I would have loved to try the lobster or crab roll and tacos. Next time! There will definitely be a next time.
The idea of BBQ oysters made me turn around and discover this delightful place. There is a small building that you order in. There is a scrumptiously clean restroom if you have the need and decent, free parking. Take your tray up a short flight of steps to a simple patio for an instant picnic in the California weather. The oysters were so fresh they needed to be slapped. The fries were hot from the fryer. It was a lovely lunch. They have a solid offering of seafood and salad. Don't pass this place.
We come here every time we visit Bodega. We should probably venture to more places but they honestly have the best fried fish and tartar sauce! The view from the dining area is amazing too as seen in the photo. I wish I had more photos of the food but we dig in once we get our food. It's too good to resist even for a moment! I highly recommend this place! Also, a fan of Hitchcock so why not?
AMAZING! Seriously the best fish & chips I’ve had to THIS DAY. We were driving along the coastal highway (starving) and it was the most gloomy day. For some reason almost everything was closed. I kept saying too ugh I just want some gooood fish and chips. All of a sudden we turned the corner, and BAM! There was birds cafe! So cute, you can sit outside or inside and they have a deck/outdoor seating. So friendly and the best customer service. But the food.... could not be beat! If you’re in the area, this is a MUST! I will be back just for this place. Everything tasted fresh and just absolutely delicious. I am drooling just thinking about it!!! 10/10!
Delicious food and great service! They talked us into trying their artichoke fritters, and they're to die for! An excellent treat and super friendly service after the day had gotten off to a rough start. Their clam chowder will continue to be a traditional must for our visits and now, their fritters will be, too!
Delightfully delicious stop along the coast. We spotted the sign for fish and chips and they were outstanding! Great batter, buttery flakey (mild!) cod, and a house made tartar that’s the best I’ve ever tasted. When we couldn’t decide on a beer, we were offered a taste of the great white on tap - delicious! We loved sitting on the outdoor patio with the bay just beyond... sweet tiny little gem of a spot.
I love trying new places. We had fish and chips and calamari. I really enjoyed both of these. It wasn't really greasy or fishy. Perfect. Great prices too!! And it's beautiful outdoor seating on a patio above the bay. I will definitely be back to try the crab roll and other things on the menu.
Awesome place to eat! Delicious oysters especially with blue cheese and bacon recommended by Juan Miguel but all of them were very fresh and savoury. Really good wine. The visit in the Bird’s Cafe made our day! Very nice terrace to spend afternoon. High top service, Kind regards to Juan Miguel:)
Nice casual spot to stop. Order at the window, grab an outdoor patio table, and pick up your food when ready. We had oysters (amazing), clam chowder (delish!), calamari, and fish and chips. All were well received and the cod fish was a really nice chunk! Plus we got to watch the birds. Would stop again.
BBQ Qysters delish. I tried the butter herb and the bacon Gorgonzola and they were delicious the later were super good the claim chowder is not your can soup it good and hearty. Fish and chips the tartar sauce was good but had a little taste of old onions otherwise good. the fish was nice ,thick and fried to a golden brown almost burned very crispy batter but very tasty.
We had a lobster roll, fish tacos, coffee and croissant here. Except the lobster roll, everything else was pretty good. There's no table service here. We ordered the food and seated ourselves. There's a nice patio by the main road overlooking the marina and the bay. It would be a nice outdoor dining space on a sunny day, but not in a cold and windy evening. There's also an indoor space that sells coffee and baked goods. Their croissants were pretty good. Overall, it's a great place for a quick bite or a cup of coffee.
Wow, we had such a great lunch on Sunday, my wife insisted on coming back Monday. The lobster & crab rolls were delicious! The fried artichoke was a great addition & the fries were super tasty. Definitely worth the stop!
Honestly I thought this was going to be an overpriced tourist attraction, but I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food. * Chicken tenders were the best I’ve ever had. Great for our toddler! * Fish and chips was far above average. * Raw oysters were ok but very fresh.
This was a wonderful recommendation. Their local IPA was super tasty and the fish & chips were amazing. My wife and I try to get to the Bodega area every year for our anniversary, and this might be a necessary stop in our yearly visit.
Great clam chowder and can't miss artichoke fritters. Outdoor dining only but great views
I had the 2 piece fish and chips, and a soda, and it came out to a hair over $21 before tip. This is around what I was expecting to pay for a meal in Bodega Bay, and the food was delicious! The fish pieces were a little small so if you're a big appetite person you might want to go with the 3 piece. The patio had a pretty nice view! The food came out quickly. Overall a really nice spot for lunch!
Stopped in for a breakfast treat. We got two coffees (white mocha and cappuccino iced) both were 10/10. We shared the breakfast burrito, French toast sticks, and a cinnamon bun. All were fresh, delicious, and hot. The ladies at checkout were quick and extremely kind. I would eat here again if I was in the area!
Traveling up the coast of California and stopped at the The Birds Cafe for lunch. Yummy food! I ordered the clam chowder; delicious and a very hefty portion! My hubby ordered the fish & chips. He loved it and stated the fish was fresh! We ate on site on their deck overlooking the bay. Wait time for food was great and everything was very clean. Friendly staff. On our next trip to this area we will definitely visit The Birds Cafe again.
Great little outside eatery! This place has a wonderful view with casual dining. You just walk up to the window make your order and they bring it to you on their nice outside patio. You can eat your lunch as you look out over the bay. Prices are affordable what’s the score be a good spot to take families they are also dog friendly
We returned to have a lunch at this place twice, which basically shows how good the place is. BBQ oysters were delicious, especially given I don’t eat raw sea-food. Lobster roll was simply fantastic, can compete with lobster rolls in Maine, the dressing was so thoughtfully done, I can give this place 10 stars, if the rating would allow. Fish and chips were also good and fresh.
The Birds Cafe was a magical little gem and perfect for delicious food. We ended up having a great breakfast with a beautiful view. We even snagged some candy before we left! It was a wonderful experience and the atmosphere was just right for a relaxing morning.
crab roll and artichoke fritters. wow this sandwich was delicious. didn't even need to use the butter. phe.nominal.
This is my first time coming to this place even though I’ve been out to bodega many times. I loved the vibe and how you ordered your food and then got a little vibrator to pick up your food when it was ready. I was a little bit bummed out that they were out of the crab roll, but I ended up getting the lobster roll, which was fabulous. They have lots of different seafood, and the people are really nice. The best part is the patio that looks over the water. I highly recommend this place if you want some good quick seafood and do you want to sit outside during a nice sunny day.
This place is paradise!! It was my first time and it won’t be my last! Don(the owner) helped me out at the register and made it so easy since I was new. He recommended the fish n chips which were sooooo good(especially with that salsa 💃 I had to ask for another one). Even though it got kinda busy this place holds well under pressure & the view is to die for 😍 Very beautiful & aesthetic even having a cafe right next door! The best of both worlds for anyone traveling on the coastal highway and a must to pass by to enjoy good food & a magnificent view.
Fresh fish dishes. Good flavors. Onion rings were delicious. Lobster roll good amount of lobster and fresh. Atmosphere is nice and good outdoor seating. Dog friendly. Nice selection of beers/spirits/non alcoholic.
Beautiful patio overlooking Bodega Bay and delicious seafood. We had the lobster roll and the crab roll, both perfectly made and relatively reasonably priced. Also had 6 raw oysters, which were super fresh. Then we headed over to their soft serve ice cream shop for dessert, then bought a cool souvenir shot glass in their gift shot. A great one-stop-shop in Bodega Bay!
A delightful trip to Bodega Bay and "The Birds" Cafe Excellent staff & service and a good menu in a lovely location overlooking the bay. Part of our movie trip tourism from the UK. And when you head off, if you're going to San Fran go via the costal road which is absolutely stunning.
My husband and I made a quick lunch stop in Bodega Bay and stopped at Blackbird Cafe without reading reviews, just pulled in due to their patio overlooking the bay. We had our socks knocked off by the fish tacos 🤤🤤 I’m fact, we spent the rest of our 2 week road trip along the Pacific Coast up to Seattle talking about, and trying to find, fish tacos as good as these. Parking is available although the lot is small and probably fills up quickly. The patio is large with a view of the bay. They were busy, but service was fast. A great stop for fish tacos!
What a cute place!! We got the combo fish and prawn and the lobster roll. Both entrees were tasty and fries were crispy. You order up at the shack and take a seat with a view. then wait for your buzzer to go off and pick up your food at the window. We loved the patio so we could bring our dog. We spent $64 after tax and tip for two.
The Bird’s Café in Bodega Bay is a fantastic little spot with a laid-back vibe and great quality. I grabbed an iced coffee and it was absolutely perfect—smooth, flavorful, with just the right amount of caffeine kick, and priced really reasonably too. It totally hit the spot. I didn’t have room to try the food this time, but everything coming out of the kitchen looked and smelled amazing. I’ll definitely be back to try more. Friendly service and a cozy setting make it an easy five stars. Looking forward to my next visit.
We had to visit because what’s Bodega Bay if not experienced in the context of Hitchcock’s iconic movie, right? The momentos were definitely educational and the right kind of companion while enjoying the pastries. The view and photo op definitely sets you in the mind set of “doing nothing”. 🌸💗 To top it off is the food at the main restaurant. My kids loved the grilled oysters! 🦪 You’ve never had fish and chips 🎣 until you try theirs and their lobster roll 🦞sandwich turns on lethargic taste buds only good seafood can do! Fresh and fairly priced food choices, authentic service, and an ambience so rarely seen anywhere else, I’m already dreaming of coming back. So blessed to have made this core memory with my kids 🌸🙏🏼💗
This place is something special, so if you're just driving by or planning your rehearsal dinner, The Birds Cafe is one of those rare gems that makes you feel instantly at home — with seriously good eats and gorgeous views to match! We had our rehearsal dinner here with our wedding party and couldn’t have picked a better place! The setup was perfect — we sat together inside, everyone ordered what they wanted at the outdoor window, and drinks were easy to grab! The staff was so kind and thoughtful, making sure vegan and gluten-free options were ready for us (which meant a lot to us since the options were amazing and special!) and even delivered our order right to our tables. Our vegetarian friends are still dreaming about the artichoke dishes! And our Vegan friend, said she was over the moon with her Tofu Tacos! To top it off, we got married at Secret Gardens — and it turns out the owners of The Birds Cafe are the very family who originally created that venue. That little detail made everything feel extra meaningful! If you plan to do your rehearsal or a larger group meet up here, drop Melissa an email and she can help (just use the email address on their website)🥰
One of my go to places when at Bodega. The views cannot be beat with multiple seating areas. The artichoke fritters are like crack they’re so good. Today I had the shrimp tacos and they were quite good. My friend had the prawn and chips and I was surprised how large the prawns were. I also love that they have a little coffee and bakery shop next-door so sometimes we’ll grab a coffee and pastry after our meal
Named after the Hitchcock movie filmed in the area, The Birds is a great roadside spot to grab fresh dozen of Hog Island Oysters BBQ style with Herb Butter, some fish tacos, an IPA (or two) and take in the views of Bodega Bay from the outdoor patio. Friendly helpful staff and a gorgeous place to take in the sunset.
My son and I stopped her on our way home from the beach to get a quick bite. The outdoor seating area was very nice and the food was really good. I had the fish tacos which were topped with lots of fresh ingredients. They were very tasty but felt like there was more batter than fish. Good corndog and fries!
Small menu but good choices. Great view of the Bay. Parking limited and dangerous street crossing but we were able to park close. Nice little town with great scenery not far from our campground.
Great place to stop if you're coming down the highway. Good food, quick service and a nice outside deck overlooking the harbor
The coffee is average, not bad but also not outstanding. But solid overall, really has an amazing ambiance and great scenery views of the bay. It is an amazing spot to stop to rest and chill for a while, but yeah, the food is not as special as the ambiance that's all. At least for me, obviously everyone has different tastes.
Good food and was made fast despite it being a busy day (Chowder Week). Some of the other patrons were rude but it was fine
Great oysters and fried artichokes! Food was fresh and really tasty. Oysters I had that day we're very good. They serve mignonnette on the side. Could be cheaper, especially drinks options. ($7 for a can Tecate) I get that it's in that kind of location to upcharge with the view, I suppose.
Great little spot on the north side of Bodega Bay off of route 1. It has a little restaurant, a coffee shop, and a gift shop in three separate small buildings. We ordered the fish & chips and the fish tacos. Both were pretty good. The homemade tartar sauce had a unique flavor and really went well with the fish. The parking is right off route 1, which I would imagine is crazy packed during high season. Great place to stop with a nice outdoor patio! Decent wine selection by the glass.
A quaint restaurant complex with wonderful outdoor seating and bay views. Staff was great and patient with our group order. The food was good, but definitely different that south Louisiana and the east coast. Coffee shop is attached and had great pastries and wine selections to boot. A very nice spot to stop either at the beginning or end of your coastal adventure. Con: only one bathroom, just need to know that before the beer drinking begins😉👍🏽
I was a little apprehensive at first as the venue was very small and looked like a coffee cafe. You couldn't see or hear a kitchen so we asked if they were taking orders because we were looking for an early dinner. She said yes, so we ordered the fish & chips & a dozen oysters (raw). to share, and a couple bowls of chowder. What an unexpected surprise! The food was hot and delicious (except the oysters because they were raw, but also very pleasing) The fish & chips were hot and crispy, the chowder creamy and delicious. I didn't get a pic of the oysters because my husband devoured them upon delivery. Very charming decor, paying homage to the movie, but not tacky or cheesy
As others have said, ocean views and outdoor seating! What can be wrong there? On to the grub. Best thing we’ve had here are the addicting artichoke fritters. Order them, even if you don’t order anything else. Onion rings - excellent. The fish and chips were cooked perfect but very bland, they need some fresh herbs/parsley/tarragon/chives - just something! And the clam chowder could use some too, instead of the peppery flavor that kinda obliterated the clam taste. Overall - we will be back, if only for the artichoke!
Keep in mind, I only went to the cafe. I loved their seasonal pumpkin chai & butter croissant! Absolute perfection there. The breakfast dish I tried, a green chile quiche of some kind, was mediocre, & the chocolate croissant was average, certainly a reheated probably-not- fresh pastry. Nothing to write home about. The location & inside of the cafe were cool. There were pictures & flowers everywhere, & the cafe was nestled quaintly between the separate lunch building & a gift shop that wasn’t open when I was there on a weekday. It’s certainly worth a stop if for nothing more than a delicious coffee in a beautiful setting.
We stopped in for a quick breakfast, although the place is tiny inside, there is a small amount of covered outdoor seating. We ate breakfast at the coffee shop because the main cafe was not yet open. There is also a larger patio for seating, and it is uncovered which is pretty difficult in the rain.
Late December 2025 The cluster of three stores: Restaurant, café, and gift shop are all casual and bayside attractions and destinations for visitors The site celebrates the then popular Alfred Hitchcock movie The Birds 🐦⬛ which was then part of the prolific work of this ground breaking film maker. The film 🎥 🎞 was shot in several areas of Bodega Bay town. We only got to visit the cafe while the restaurant had a long queue and is known as a place to have the famed Hog Island Oysters of CA. The cafe is simple, rustic, with a number of film decor Expect American style cafe fare and coffee ☕️ culture The nearby gift shop is worth a quick perusal
The food was delicious, the wine decent, the staff very nice and accommodating, and the views gorgeous. So why not 5 stars? Lots of wasps when we were there. It was a weekday so had our choice of tables in all the outdoor “rooms” (all beautiful views of one kind or another). But the wasps know a great spot when they find one. Everywhere we tried to sit they were nearby and wandered over. With an allergic dog, trying to stay away from the wasps was our focus rather than enjoying everything else. The restaurant can’t control where wasps go in the great outdoors. Without them though, it would have been a truly delightful lunch with a gorgeous view.
Service was great and the atmosphere was amazing on the outdoor seating with the great view. It's not too crouded and each table had plenty of room without bumping into the table next to you. The food was average, I wouldn't say better than others. The oysters were good but smaller than I expected. For the price and size of the clam chowder I was hoping it would be good but it fell short on flavor. My son ordered the lobster roll, he said it was good but felt like the portion was reallt small. Boyfriend ordered the fish and chips, definitely lots of breading but the fish was good and the fries normal. Beers on tap were good though and we always like trying out local beers. If you want great atmosphere this is definitely the place.
Delicious and affordable cafe with a stunning view!! My group ordered the lobster roll, french fries, onion rings, and artichoke fritters for our vegetarian friends. The lobster was fresh and tasted amazing with the lemon. Onion rings were great, they were perfectly soft and even a little sweet. The fritters were quite oily though - my friends struggled to finish them. As for the cafe portion, the drinks are affordable and there are plenty of options. However, the brownie we ordered came really hard.
Nice set up for dining outside but that's where the compliments end. We ordered raw oysters and the fish tacos and chardonay. When you have to add salt and hot sauce to the tacos just for them to have taste, no bueno. Raw Oysters hard to screw that up but they advertise Hog Island hog wash but this is nothing like the original hog wash that I have had at Hog Island. We ordered glass of wine from the bottles in the window but turns out it was poured from a box. 🤬 Let's hope that all this is because of the pandemic and food taste will get better. I wish them luck.
We stopped here for lunch, and the staff was friendly and quick with our orders. There is a lot of seating with a small gift shop next to it. Despite the good service and seating, the food was bland. Even adding a whole pack of salt and pepper into our clam Chowder didn't help. As for the fish and chips, which a few of our party ordered, they were basic. But the price wasn't really worth the quality and quantity of the food. Maybe the other items on the menu are good, but we wouldn't come back to this spot.
Can only speak to the breakfast/coffee. Both the breakfast burrito and coffee were fine to good. The burrito was wildly small for the price. A pretty expensive place for not much. On a good note: really great places to sit outside. Nice Adirondack chairs with views!
The views are great. Customer service was good. The oysters were very small and everything on the menu appeared to be deep fried. We oysters, fish tacos and shrimp tacos.... the fish and shrimp were battered and fried stuffed into this healthy taco with a very tasty aoli. Wish they would have left the fish and shrimp unfried as it would have tasted so much better ( not so oily) and showcased what seafood offerings Bodega bay has to offer. There was also no crab on the menu and they do catch crab in that area so a bit disappointing. They do have Lobster rolls but I do not know if those are also fried. The wine and beer selection was good. The prices are a bit high for what you get.
Outdoor seating, and the views are fantastic. Prices are generally affordable and the food comes out quickly. I had the $15.95 + tax fish tacos, and the fish was fresh & plentiful. But the overall tacos were uninspired: meh ingredients, almost without flavor. Cold tortillas that looked and tasted like they were just pulled out of a supermarket package. (Hate to say this, but I would take fish tacos from a roadside truck that cost 1/3rd the price any day over these.)
First things first - DO NOT ORDER THE CLAM CHOWDER. It is abysmal and mostly just black pepper and watery sauce that will not resemble clam chowder. Please just stop selling this - it is a grave injustice to clam chowder. Now that's done, the fish tacos were good. My daughter tried them and said "I don't like fish but I like these fish tacos" They weren't amazing, but they were redemptive after the clam chowder. The outdoor seating area is great and has a nice view of Bodega Bay.
The outdoor patio is really the only reason to stop here vs other options. The food, while not bad, is priced the same as much better options. The clam chowder was loaded with black pepper, almost to the point of being inedible. I don’t know if that’s normal or I got unlucky. The staff was very transactional. The views are lovely, but that’s not enough for me to return.
Friendly and welcoming ladies, their customer service was great. Nice large seating area outside. I wanted to give 5 stars initially because food looked great, but after trying fish prawns with fish combo and fries, and then calamari, I was dissapointed. Old oil was used on french fries, taste was too strong, fried calamari tasted like old fries because it taste like they used same oil. Fish prawns crust also tasted like old french fries oil and crust on fish fillet also tasted like old oil from french fries. Their BBQ oysters were good, thats the only thing that I liked. Using same oil to fry french fries and then calamari and fish fillet is not a good idea, everything tasted like old oil on fries and with too much of oil, food makes me nauseous, therefore at maximum its a 3 star for food. Coffee was good, its located to the right side of main restaurant. Spent total of $54 for the items you see in box plus mineral water.
Food was really subpar. Service was non existent. Nice views of the harbor though. We ordered two clam chowders and two fish tacos to split with my wife, along with a couple beers. The cashier didn’t smile and acted disinterested when I asked some questions. The clam chowder was really disappointing. It just tasted like flour with some cream. No seasoning whatsoever. The clams were super skimpy, and worse, tough and chewy. Some carrots were soft, some were chewy; but why even add carrots to a clam chowder? . It needed a bunch of salt and pepper and hot sauce to make it taste like something. Neither of us finished it. The fish tacos were in the same category. The batter had no seasoning or salt. The fish had no seasoning either. It was plain as plain can be. Pico has yellow, unripe tomatoes. The guac / cream were ok. For $8.5 a taco, I’d expect some top tier tacos. Not in the slightest. The IPA was decent, but $9 is pretty pricey. All in all the meal, for lack of a better term, sucked. The views and gift shop were worth one star though. At least the lady in the shop was nice and there was a chill cat in there Plenty of other spots to choose from, wish we had gone elsewhere.
In search of great clam chowder in Bodega Bay, California. This was not it. Nice atmosphere, quaint buildings. 3 separated buildings for food order and kitchen, coffee shop, dessert bar and dining area, and last but not least a building for gifts. What caught our eye was the nice presentation of the business as well as the name. "The Birds Cafe" in honor of the Alfred Hitchcock movie. We ordered a light lunch only appetizers, and of course a bowl of clam chowder. First taste of the clam chowder and this was bad. First was the consistency. Watery and not thick. They used a water base. Lots of chopped up clams, but little portions of potato, carrots and celery. Our other snack was fried artichoke bits. Hopefully they couldn't ruin cooking these. They were good. Portions were small with ranch dressing. My opinion they could have offered marinated leaves of some type as an option. Prices were to high for product. See our review of the tides and fishaterian food stop. Plus the comparison photos of the clam chowder. You can see the difference.
This use to be are go to spot in bodega. Not any more. The fish a chips were very bland. The fries were freezer burnt or something. The calamari was super chewy and flavorless. The clam chowder was bland. A the prices keep going up a the portions are getting smaller. It use to be 3 big long pieces of fish, now it’s 3 small squares. We won’t be going back. There are other places out there that do it better for the same price.
Not family friendly. They don’t have any high chairs for kids. Tacos were bland as other reviews have already mentioned. Fish was tough. Went to grab salt and saw that the salt bowl was half empty and I knew immediately I wasn’t the only one missing seasoning. When you spend over $70 to feed your family, you’d expect flavor to be included.
Visited for the first time and last time this morning. Adorable little cafe but that was really the only plus. We ordered a latte and a cappuccino and both were pretty much just doctored milk-neither one tasted like coffee at all. On top of that, the lady behind the counter was quite unfriendly. We said ‘thank you’ and she didn’t bother to acknowledge us or respond. Super disappointing all around considering how excited we were to try this place.
I had a good meal here a couple of times before. Unfortunately, the last time I came in, there was an old man working there who was a misogynistic, objectifying, creepy dude & made me feel pretty unsafe when I was just trying to order food. Unfortunately, for that reason, I’ll never be back. And I would advise any women, especially women traveling solo, to stay cautious of this place, if you don’t want to have a freaky experience. Women should be allowed to exist without having to put their guard up, it’s a shame this place doesn’t allow them to.
We come to Bodega Bay regularly and decided to try something new today. Firstly, the employees are less than friendly. Never smile, say "you're welcome", nothing. Okay, no big deal. The food looks great when it comes out. One bite in, and I could tell something was off. We ordered fish and chips, fish tacos, oysters, and calamari. The not fresh obviously frozen fish was battered about a half inch thick in the most greasy, disgusting batter I've ever tried. The fish tacos had no flavor whatsoever, even after adding lime and lemon in hopes to cover up what little I could taste- grease. Their tartar sauce was awful. The oysters were tastless. The pros: plenty of outdoor seating, the fries were edible, and the calamari was good.
