This place is amazing! I'm a Texas girl and know about delicious biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak and burritos. All were delicious with huge portions!
Great food and great service, with a nice West Texas atmosphere. Awesome homemade ranch and salsa. Wishing I could have got the recipe for both!!
During our recent stay at Terlingua Ranch Lodge, we had breakfast at The Bad Rabbit Cafe both mornings. The first day there was a limited menu due to the delivery truck being delayed. However, Jeannette, our server, let us know what was available right away. That was very helpful and proactive. We ordered eggs, potatoes, sausage and toast. Very good!! The second day the regular menu was available. This time, I was able to ask for bacon. I asked for it to be crispy and Dre, the cook, made it perfectly crispy. My sister had the breakfast taco and she said it was the best one she had ever had!! Even if we didn't stay there, I would make the drive if I was in the area. ☺
Stayed here in the RV park section while visiting Big Bend and Terlingua. The cafe is great! I mean seriously in the middle of nowhere. Sixteen miles of paved road off the main road, then another 3 on gravel road. Well worth the ride. Everything we had was great. Meals were generous portions, tasted great, served hot. Service was efficient and cheerful. Could've eaten in the camper but enjoyed supporting the ranch. So-onion rings were good. The chicken strips were large and tasty. The burger (hot w/jalapeño bacon) was great. Fries were great. Had an omelette that was fluffy/thick and awesome. The fish & chips were also very good. The kitchen knows what they're doing and does it well! I will be trying more before we leave, but there's only so much I can eat.
What a fantastic restaurant!! I stayed on the ranch and ate here a few times. The food was outstanding ( breakfast burritos, chicken and waffles, smothered pork chops, steak, Burger)and very reasonably priced! And the staff was so friendly and warm! I highly recommend!
1 star for Fries which were crispy on the outside, and puffy on the inside. 2nd star for the burger cooked thoroughly and was juicy. I ordered the Texas Burger. It was BIG. 3rd star: LOTS of bacon, bun toasted, and messy as I ate it. 4th star: The Corona beer was icy cold with salt from the table and lemon wedges were happily supplied upon request. My appetizer was a lightly toasted cheese quesadilla with flavorful cheese and house made salsa that was steeped, savory, and fresh. 5th star: The staff was attentive, sociable, and knowledgeable of the menu.
Went for lunch before driving up the Christmas Mountains back in January. The burgers were excellent, everyone was super friendly and willing to accommodate our 4 dogs. Will definitely go back!
Great food in the middle of nowhere. It's a bit of a drive but definitely worth it. And they have live music!
Alex is an excellent waitress, we had a group of 14 and she took great care of us. Food was excellent, large portions. This is always a fun stop for lunch.
We had a group of 15 hungry motorcyclists show up and our server Alex did a amazing job. Very organized, food all came out without any issues. Give her a raise!
I had the best chicken fried steak I've ever had the other night. The Burgers here are also amazing. Service is excellent, though it can get pretty busy at certain times of the day. I highly recommend the Bad Rabbit as some of the best area eats! They open at 8:00am and close at 10:00pm, If you are here during the day, you can also get Ice and beer, showers or do laundry.
My brother and I stopped here after a 13 hour drive from Houston. They were packed so it took a while to get a table, and it was too cool to sit outside. Our server was friendly and attentive even tho she had her hands full. Food was good. I'd like to be there in warmer weather when live music is playing. Would be fun.
What a great surprise! Locals love it. Tourists love it. We'd planned to cook every night while RVing, but why when you've got such great service and great food?!? Had great pulled pork one night, great homemade chicken-fried steak the next. Good sides, including the broccoli and macaroni salad, and many more options. Come on, you are out in the middle of nowhere, did you expect to get good food too? Didn't expect it, but Bad Rabbit delivers. Shout out to Kaitlyn, who provided excellent service, but everyone we met here has been incredibly kind and generous. I'm going to miss not having this place near-by, even "at home in the city". Oh, I forgot to mention the impossible burger, which my wife made me try because she was sure it was meat. Not a lot of vegetarian options, but what they have seems to satisfy!
The best burguer that I had in a while . I love it there , planning to go every Sunday whit my kids ,also the Mac & Cheese it’s amazing for kids :)
We arrived with a very large party for lunch. Alex was awesome. She was able to accommodate us with no issues. Highly recommend stopping for a great meal!
Concerned we were on the right track to the cafe we finally arrived but didn’t see evidence it was open. Eventually we did see some staff and made our selves comfortable. Everyone we encountered was friendly! We ordered and within a very reasonable time we had our meals. We had spent the day hiking in the park and we hungry. I had chicken fried steak and my partner, a fresh garden salad. Portions were generous, fresh and very delicious. Bad Rabbit Cafe was one of our highlights during our visit to Terlingua.
Great experience being served by a mom and her 2 children with her husband at cook. Food and service was delicious, beer was cheap and cold. Place is a gem in the desert (worth a 25 minute drive from the main road) but worth it. Patio is lovely, live music was nice and horseshoes game kept the kids occupied.
My wife and I ate lunch here after going up the Christmas Mountain trail and back during the morning period. We were hungry, and it was a long way to anywhere else to eat. Glad we did stop, as the food was really good. We got wraps and fries/sweet potato fries, with Dr. Peppers. Kathleen was our server, and she did a great job while providing us some information about the Lodge and area. A great experience, and recommended for anyone staying there or passing through.
We were staying at Christmas Mountain and we needed a place to fill up before hitting Big Bend. Bad Rabbit Cafe understood the assignment. When the food came out we were delighted withe the portion size, but even more delighted by the taste. We had a down home filling breakfast and I didn't have to make it! The pancakes were fluffy and filling, my French toast was flavorful and my daughters sausage biscuit tasted just as beautiful as it looked. And as a bonus we got a little Mustang history.
What an amazing place to eat! The atmosphere is just lay back and chill, the food was amazing and the service was over the top! Our server, Beau, was a machine! Super nice, very attentive and so patient. He handled 9 tables while we were there, a couple of tables had 7 or more guests! It was a little bit of a drive from the Ghost town, but well worth it. There’s not too many places that gives you sour cream and salsa with a cheese quesadillas. My wife ordered the chicken fried chicken. This was no Sysco chicken fried chicken. This was a hand pounded, house breaded chicken fried chicken with real mashed potatoes with the skin and green beans. The best meal we’ve had in this area. We will surely be back!
From breakfast, lunch, and through dinner, this place keeps you fed. As a property owner here at the ranch it’s a blessing to have a restaurant close by to enjoy a hot meal. Staff is great and the food is delicious! The restaurant is nestled beside beautiful mountains and has amazing views. You can also get a hot shower and in the summer you dive into the pool there. If you need a place the stay the lodge has cabins or rv space for rent too! Getting there is straight forward but the last 3 miles is an unpaved gravel road. It’s not the worst road but average speed for me is about 15 mph. All said and done this place is a true oasis in the desert. Our favorite place after a long day working or exploring the mountains.
Friendly staff and great food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The chef even made special, off menu cinnamon rolls for us that were nearly as big around as my head! Prices were great. Staff even gave us some great ideas and tips for hiking the trails nearby. We ate at this restaurant for nearly every meal because we enjoyed it so much. Staying at this lodge is worth it for this restaurant alone.
You're literally in the middle of nowhere - and to get the food and service you do is really refreshing. Hometown cooking with friendly neighborhood service.
True cafe atmosphere, very cozy and delicious food!
Amazing!!! Food!!! Atmosphere!!! Staff!!! Fish Sandwich, Chilli, Steak Nachos, BLT!!
A very special place and a special part of Terlingua Ranch, great food, friendly workers who do a fine job. Specials are appreciated and seeing the same crew throughout the season is a testament to solid management. Yay Dre and team!!
This is an Oasis in the desert, Love eating here, good grub for sure. They also just installed a state of the art new grill and ovens.Looking forward to my next feast here.
The Bad Rabbit cafe at the Terlingua Ranch Lodge is always fantastic. Great food, friendly staff and rustic atmosphere. The live music on weekends is always a must as well. See y'all next time.

We saw a cafe as park of the ranch lodge and thought it would be some cheap food stop with 4 greasy items. This place is OUTSTANDING! We had a French dip and a Texas Rodeo burger . They both came with fries (I don't know what they do to those fries but MAN they are GOOD!) and my burger was amazing. It's the best burger I've had in years! They also melt the cheese over the toppings (onion rings too) and it holds the whole burger together brilliantly. I am disappointed in other restaurants for not putting in this level of quality. 10/10, coming back later for a pineapple dessert.
I had a chicken fried steak that was so good that I had to have another the next day. Both had a rather thick and tender steak inside. They also have unusually good onion rings made fresh. Sam is an excellent waiter and keeps up with the tea. Oh and the baked potatoes have large and real bacon bits. My only complaint is that Bad Rabbit is 500 miles from home. You can’t expect food this good in the middle of nowhere!
There was no where closer, but so glad there wasn't. Sat in the screened porch and enjoyed the view. Chicken Fried Steak was good, but particularly liked the homemade mashed potatoes and fresh green beans. It's at the end of a long road off 118...16 miles maybe (last three are unpaved.
Spent last weekend at Terlingua Ranch Lodge and enjoyed a few meals at the Bad Rabbit. Went twice for breakfast and the food was great, but the service was even better. Our server, Shaun, kept the coffee hot and made sure we always had everything we wanted. Dinner was great, too. I had the chicken fried steak, which was big, crispy and flavorful. The sides, green beans and mashed potatoes were fresh and very well prepared. I don't know how they do it with their minimal staff, but food and service are top notch.
Dinner last night and breakfast this morning. Food was amazing. The coffee is stellar. And the guy who helped us this morning was super friendly as was the young lady the night before. With the desert being so harsh and remote having a warm place like this is amazing.

Breakfast was standard, service was lacking. They just need more help, maybe. Stopped for a quick breakfast. The server said we could sit down anywhere, but then kinda forgot us. It was 30 minutes before we just got up to order at the counter and get some coffee. Can’t mess up eggs and bacon, so that was good! The place was cozy, with indoor tables and some picnic tables outside. Glad it’s there since there’s nothing else around!
This is a fun cafe at the base of Terlingua Ranch. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but check ahead for non-peak hours. In the weekends there is live music from 6:30 to 8:30 that gets the whole place singing and dancing. Don't expect upscale menus, but good food served with a Texas size smile.
The Bad Rabbit is fairly basic as a cafe, but being in the middle of nowhere, even in its simplicity, it is truly a great place. The burgers are good, the beer is cold and they hand batter their chicken fried steaks. The people who work there are friendly and the place is clean and tidy. Unless you're already staying at Terlingua Ranch, the Bad Rabbit is a long way from anywhere. Sometimes, they have live music or other events, so consider the drive but be sure to top off your tank before you head out.
Are you in Terlingua and looking for something other than "Mexican food"? Give this place a try!! It's a little out of the way, but well worth the drive!
Food tasted delicious, service was good ! My only complaint is I ordered the 2 NY strip medium rare and they were both well done. Flavor saved it even though it was dryer and tougher than I like.
Had brunch at the bad rabbit. We both had the breakfast burrito and a side of biscuits and gravy

Stopped in on our way to Terlingua. First you have to drive 20 minutes on a paved road and the last ten minutes on a washboard caliche road. Staff are very friendly and establishment is very clean and quaint. We ordered chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken. Food was average but way too far out of the way for us.

Chicken Fried Steak was the worst I've ever had. I ordered a caesar salad first and didn't get it until after I started eating the chicken Fried Steak. My friend had Beef ribs and only could take a couple bites. It was tough and red. We overheard the cook saying "keep up comin" these are microwave.
There is no atmosphere unless you want to count a black and white tv in the corner but the movie/show thats playing can’t be heard. Service is terrible, “waitress” had us take the food from the service tray. Also don’t recommend drinking from their dirty cups, literal sand in a few out our table. I happened to try their dipping sandwich and their “au jus” tasted like they mixed balsamic vinegar and soy sauce and mystery ingredient and warmed it up. Mystery film forever sitting atop the forbidden mixture. The chicken fried steak was also tougher than prime Mike Tyson, also hurt a jaw like he would’ve. All in all I’d a make a drive to anywhere else (besides the Chili pepper cafe) to eat a quality meal.
Great food, reasonable price, wonderful staff! My most recent experience was definitely my best. Jennette (our server) promptly welcomed us (seemed very genuine) and then took our order after we were seated. She was very knowledgeable, patient and seemed to really enjoy her job! She made us feel right at home. Darrell made us a couple of mean burgers that were built exactly as we had requested & tasted excellent! What a great late lunch/early dinner. He also makes a great pizza!!! Earlier, we received similar service for breakfast from Blakely. And no review would be complete without mentioning "Dre" and his breakfast burritos!!! A "MUST HAVE" each morning, to start your day right! I've been coming here one week a month for the past nine months and I always appreciate Dre's breakfasts!!! A Gold Star for Jeannette and the gang!!! Thank you! ************************************************************ UPDATE: The above review was over two years ago. None of these wonderful people work there anymore, except Dre. I'm a local and I have not eaten there in well over a year...
When you know you are going to be closed, change your hours on Google. It isn't that hard, and it saves people an hour drive with no food at the end.
We waited for 40 mins for someone to get the menu and coffee, and another 40 mins to get a refill on coffee even when asked twice. Food came after 2 hours of sitting at the restaurant. I know a lot of us are here to enjoy big bend and not wait at a restaurant. Go here only if you have three hours to wait for the service.
