I felt compelled to write this review from my honeymoon in Japan. My partner and I have continually commented on the extent to which sushi katsuei holds up even in the context of Japanese sushi restaurants. This place is just so good. It’s the perfect low key and serene place. The omakase is excellent.

welcoming, warm and relaxed atmosphere gives way to one of the best omakase we have ever had. they don’t need holier than thou atmosphere - the sushi speaks for itself. each bite utter perfection. A true gem.

Sushi Katsuei is easily one of my favorite sushi spots in Brooklyn, and a standout in Park Slope. I came in for the omakase and was blown away by both the quality and value. Every piece was exceptionally fresh, and the chef clearly puts thought into the progression of flavors—from delicate to bold, each bite had its own moment. The cuts were clean and precise, and the rice was perfectly seasoned—not too vinegary or heavy, just right. What I really appreciated was the balance they strike: the space is minimalist and serene without feeling pretentious, and the staff is attentive but not overbearing. You feel welcome whether you're a sushi enthusiast or someone trying omakase for the first time. The price point is also very fair for the quality you’re getting. Compared to Manhattan spots with similar quality, this felt like a steal. It’s the kind of place where you leave feeling genuinely satisfied, not just with the food, but the whole experience. I’d recommend sitting at the bar if you can—the interaction with the chef adds a personal touch that makes the meal even more memorable. This is a place I’ll definitely return to again and again. Highly recommended.

One of the best places in park slope. Highest quality fish being served here. It's all about the chefs menu ..sit back and let the chef do his job. The flavors and freshness are just that incredible. So simple but done so right .

This was my first omakase experience that I went to on my birthday. It was absolutely PHENOMENONAL. The nigiri honestly melted in my mouth like butter. Here are pictures of the yellowtail with scallion, Uni, and the king salmon I believe. Everything was fresh, delicious, and marvelously prepared. I'll definitely be coming back.

Make it a special occasion and get the omakase. Each piece was made a la carte and explained by the waiter. This is more helpful than the other restaurants where the waiter hastily explains 20 pieces of fish on your tray and you forget what’s what. At Sushi Katsuei, each piece was crafted and explained to us. One by one ☝🏼 So it was more of an experience. Definitely tried things we’d never order plus we tried things that are seldom on the menu. This is not your typical sushi 🍣 restaurant. The chefs wear white hats and it’s very minimal. High quality. You must try this and go for the omakase ⭐️

Excellent sushi. This is where I bring non sushi people to appreciate and love sushi for their first time. No soy sauce dipping here. You will eat it the way it is prepared by the chefs and since the fish is so exquisite, you don’t need to add soy sauce or anything else. The service is respectful and attentive. The ambiance is a bit cold and really not something to even care about since the fish becomes the main attraction. 5pm on a Thursday evening felt like it was babysitting hour at the sushi joint. Park slope parents living in their bubble allowing their kids to be loud and obnoxious while others are dining around them. I can’t blame the restaurant but parents need to take responsibility. No homework, coloring books, or crayons should be on a sushi restaurants table. Besides that… everything was excellent!! And thank you for not participating in the 4% credit card fee scam. Many customers appreciate that!!

Fresh sushi, with their own style of flavoring their classic omakase special. Healthy amount of wasabi was used in prep for some rolls. Try to get a reservation, as we showed up on dinner opening at 4 pm and they asked for a reservation to an empty restaurant; when we were done eating the restaurant was barely a third full, felt kind of odd. None the less, decent omakase for a great price point, definitely left satiated.

Celebrated my birthday here with the open omakase and it was excellent. Every piece was delicious and the service and experience were great without dropping as much money as some nice omakase places in the city. Can’t wait to do it again.

Very good quality and value for money omakase at this sushi joint. The chef was friendly and served the sushi piece by piece (if you sit at the sushi counter). Service was excellent as always here and had a very homely feel to it. Overall, would highly recommend this place to anyone whos interested in having an exquisite sushi experience without breaking the bank

We really loved our meal here. The omakase is a steal given the quality of product and the care in preparation. Flavors and textures were on point. Really appreciated the simple, modest environment and the staff were warm and friendly. Looking forward to sampling other items from the menu

This was our first omakase experience. It was so good, so fresh and so freaking yummy. They have different omakase options which is good because it tailors to whether you're more sushi/sashimi lover. Can't wait to come back.

The consensus among reviews is that this is the best deal Omakase you will find in Brooklyn, and that service isn’t great. Both points deserve more explanations. First, there are a few Omakase options: the regular nigiri Omakase for $55, and the sashimi + nigiri for $75. They also have an open style Omakase mixing seasonal fish with some of the regular pieces. This last option is available at market price, which was $108 in our case for 12 pieces. We took the open style Omakase and didn’t regret it. The fish was super fresh with a smooth texture, something we haven’t been used to on the East coast (sorry!). The seasoning in each sushi was also original (seaweed, yuzu, scallions), which was more in line with what we expected from an Omakase. Special mention to the sea urchin, which is always hit-or-miss. In this case, it was excellent. One disappointing note though: in almost every sushi, the seasoning was slightly overpowering the dish, making it hard to taste all the subtlety of the fish. This imbalance was a problem, but despite this issue, the overall menu was quite good, and 12 sushis was enough for a dinner. As for the service, it was actually fine. Our waiter was nice, and described every sushi with lots of details. In the end, was it the best sushi of our life? No, but who cares, it was really good sushi, and definitely as good, if not better than some pretentious options that charge twice as much in Manhattan (*ahem Yasuda*).

We came on the recommendation of a friend over here. The advise was very good. The fish was so tender as butter, that the rice on the other hand felt hard - what he was not. Excellent service and at the end of a dessert on the house. We only feel a little pressure between the courses and the check was presented quite fast, although other tables were still empty.

‼️Outrageous‼️ I took myself out on a solo date here to see what it’s like since they were all these great reviews. Since I come to review restaurants on Google and I’m by myself I come just for business and to eat. I was greeted at the door, which was very nice and saw at least four or five chefs behind the sushi counter, ready to make sushi that looked extremely fresh, which was very pleasing. No odors came. Neither was the restaurant dirty, which was beautiful. It was a bit small but that’s fine. Once I was seated, I got my order in about 10 minutes after sitting. I ordered 6 rolls in total but in 2 separate orders. each order of sushi has six pieces and for my first three order it requested around $50. For $50 in this area or anywhere in New York City you can get a whole lot more sushi. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt, thinking the quality would be way higher than any random sushi spot. Once my plate arrived, it looked quite small for $50. My whole three orders of sushi came out to being 18 rolls only. Any role was about slightly smaller than an inch in width and height. Of course I devoured them and was still hungry for more so I ordered three more. And that second order took a whole 20 minutes to come. The order was only a cucumber roll, avocado roll, and some other vegetable roll. So just rice, some seaweed and the vegetable… not crazy about that. In total, I had 36 pieces of sushi and was quite full after all that of course. I see they do specialize in the whole tasting menu. Where you get exquisite fish fresh from the chefs, for an investment of only $119 per person. But with lackluster ambience, and sushi that quite honestly doesn’t fill you up. I don’t know if it’s worth it. If you plan to go on a date here, and talk and yap so you don’t eat much. Or perhaps you come here to drink and still not eat much. You might find this place appealing. But me just coming here to eat and basing my review solely on that. My total was $105, as they charge nine dollars for a bottle of sparkling water. I don’t know if this would be worth it. For $105 I can go to Manhattan and get an unlimited Brazilian steakhouse experience where the waiters are at my beck and call. My waiter at this restaurant wasn’t too on top of me and wasn’t in a hurry to take my order the first go around, neither was she too prompt on pushing my second order after 20 minutes of waiting for rice and vegetables. I can easily think of other sushi places with thicker rolls 1/2 to 2 inches per roll for a quarter of the price with eight pieces per roll. Now I might say the quantity is not here, but neither can I say that the quality is. For the average person, I doubt people would notice the quality difference if they weren’t looking at triple the price. If I could make anything better at this restaurant, I would hopefully see that waiters could be more on top of the guests, especially since it was half empty when I was there. And perhaps more value to be provided. As I feel, I didn’t have an amazing experience. And I’ve lived in Park Slope for my whole 24 years. Hopefully they get better and maybe reach out to me so I can try it again another time. 3/5 stars ⭐️

I went to Katsuei the other night. Pretty nice. The best sushi in Brooklyn they say. “If the fish was any fresher you will have to catch it with a hook.” I read. Very nice place. Sterile, I could probably operate on these tables…. service was ok. Was it the best sushi I ever had? At least the best I had in Brooklyn? Unfortunately I’ll have to say no, it wasn’t. It felt like the owner thought it is though. 🤷‍♂️

I go here frequently as it has been one of our neighborhood favorites for years. But recently I sat at the sushi bar with two family members and ordered omakase and a two beers each. We made no special requests and had the ordinary number of pieces, around nine, before stopping. Omakase are not itemized and the bill with tip came to almost 500 dollars. I was stunned. This is way more than we are used to paying here.

Was really looking forward to this meal but unfortunately I left feeling completely cheated. We ordered the omakase and received the same selection on our first and third course (pictures attached). Having the exact same preparation is a complete slap in the face and they didn’t even offer to take anything off the bill and just said “sorry.” Apparently this place is know for good value, but it’s definitely worth going somewhere else.

Terrible omekase. I ordered their chef omekase and it was SO OVERPRICED. Posted 8 out of the 12 pieces so see for yourself. Mostly whitefish, two types of mackerel. The fish was SO FISHY, it tasted like it came from Japan and defrosted two weeks ago. By the second plate, I was so disheartened I didn't even take a picture of the last four pieces. For 120$ omekase, there is no king salmon, no scallop, no anago, no ikura, no shrimp, no crab, NOTHING OF VALUE. Uni was subpar. And the oyster.. forget it. 3 out of 6 pieces stank. Makes me sick thinking of the food. Not only that, but through three appetizers, the waiter comes over to puts his hand on my plate, asking if I want to take the last piece. Squid app .. fluke app... oysters .. every plate only has about 6 pieces. Of course I want the last piece. It's not busy cuz there's tables open so are you short of dishes back there? NEVER AGAIN.
