Do not miss this place. It is absolutely incredible. I had the grilled shrimp. I think it’s probably the best grilled shrimp I’ve had in my life! The atmosphere is incredible. We went by a boat at 3 o’clock in the afternoon could not believe this restaurant was sitting up on a mountain side overlooking the ocean. I’m in love with this place and want to go back.
Beautiful atmosphere at the water. Food was fantastic. Had ceviche trio, Mahi Mahi, grilled octopus. Take a water taxi in and there is a small beach 2 minutes away as you wait for your table.
Loved OG! An unforgettable experience from the very start. The pick-up at the pier and the boat ride are part of the charm. Upon arrival, the view of the beautiful Colomitos Beach takes your breath away — a hidden paradise. The food is absolutely delicious, made with fresh ingredients and full of flavor. Every dish was spot on. The atmosphere is relaxed and perfect for enjoying the setting and good company. The staff was incredibly kind and attentive, making the whole experience even better. Without a doubt, Ocean Grill is a must-visit spot in Puerto Vallarta. Highly recommended!
March 22, 2025-had an amazing lunch at Ocean Grill in Boca de Tomatlán. You need to make reservations so a water taxi can come for you and it’s cash only but worth the dining experience!! I ate here with my husband and cousin and our experience could not have been any more perfect!! I have dined here multiple times and each time is nothing short of excellent. The staff, the atmosphere, the food and drinks- all incredible!
Excellent ambiance staff and food. The owner came by our table to say hi with his puppies. Short ribs, burger and catch of the day were all good. And unbelievably, a humpback whale gave a performance and breached 19 times for the lunch guests! Simply amazing!
We hiked in which took longer than I expected (about 25 mins from Villa Buen Palo where there is a map posted). The trail winds back and forth a lot and the entrance is on the west side, pretty close to Colomitos beach. We were the only group at the 3pm seating, but everything was great! We had the tuna sashimi, chips and guac, shrimp, salmon, and octopus. The shrimp was the best in my opinion. We went to Colomitos beach afterward and caught a water taxi back to Boca.
What’s better than taking a private boat ride to a secluded cove and eating great seafood in a beautiful restaurant that has nothing but amazing views from every seat? We had the ceviche trio and octopus al pastor and both were awesome. Can’t wait to come back!
Fantastic experience! Beautiful and peaceful! Food was outstanding! Be sure to take cash. For a full meal with cocktails and dessert, plan on 1500 pesos per person. Credit cards not accepted. Highly recommend!
We had the restaurant to ourselves for our 11am booking (we came before high season) and the service and food was amazing. It’s an elevated experience that we’re very glad to have had during our PV trip. The booking was easy through their website and the boat was easy to find at the bocas shore. I would recommend to stay for a while longer than the 2 hours to hang out at the beach, there is another restaurant and you can take an almost hidden walk up the other side of the beach and it takes you to Madagascar beach which is secluded and gorgeous water.
After a hike that ended up being steeper than anticipated, we were beyond thankful to stumble (quite literally) upon this fantastic oasis for lunch. The octopus al pastor, tuna sashimi & salmon were the best meal we’ve had in the area all week. The mezcalitas were also our favorite. Service was excellent & friendly, dogs well behaved & the views incredible. We were relieved they had a water taxi to bail us out of the rest of our hike. Would definitely recommend.
The experience is totally worth it. The views are increíble and it is definitely something different. The food was overall good. I especially liked the grilled shrimp and my friends enjoyed their meals too. The drinks were good; I’d recommend the OG for sure but the carajillo left more to be desired (and my friend didn’t like his coffee so perhaps that’s not their strong suit. BUT! End with the key lime pie. 💯 PS- I had to add photos of the bathroom. I’ve never seen anything like it.
Undoubtedly, one of the best travel and dining experiences I had when visiting PV. Do not second guess and head to this restaurant as it is definitely a restaurant I shall never forget and hope to go back to. It is worth all the money spent and more, they have very fair and reasonable prices. Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious and nothing beats the ocean view, it was surreal…
A magical experience with exceptional service with our waiter Alejandro and the renowned chef Felix. The food was excellent, the views are spectacular and an absolute must when in Vallarta.
Ocean Grill is one of my favorite spots to eat in Puerto Vallarta. The overall experience of getting to the restaurant, views from your dinning table, excellent service, and unique cuisine creates a journey worth taking! Primarily, seafood menu full of flavor, spice, and attention to detail. I highly recommend the grilled octopus and the shrimp ceviche plate. (Side note: ask every water taxi the price before hopping on. We learned this the hard way and got hustled for a ride back to downtown for a price equivocal to the meal. Hailing a cab at the top of the hill would have been much easier)
Lovely place! Very neat experience! Made the reservation on their FB page, took a taxi to Boca de tomatlan, waited on the cement pier, they pick you up 20 min before your reservation by a boat taxi. Make sure you get on the boat that says ocean grill ! The ride over is amazing! We went to the beach after our meal and they brought us back after swimming. Very accommodating! Little pricey but worth it!!
Great food. Great location. My wife and I got the latest reservation. It was still comfortable and it was so relaxing. If you do go, make the most of it. My wife and I ordered and appetizer , two entrees and beer. For those who are worried about speaking Spanish don't be because the whole staff is bilingual. After eating I recommend you walk down to the private colomitos cove. Very beautiful and quaint.
This place is amazing! The drinks were great and the food was delicious. Our server was really friendly and gave us amazing recommendations. The owner even took the time to visit everyone's table and make sure everything was good. The grilled octopus al pastor was delicious! A note on the boat to get there: A lot of reviews say that the boat is purple. It is not. It is white and light blue and has "Ocean Grill" painted on the side in big letters. The boat also has no canopy/awnings. The boat does not go every 10 minutes but it will come about 15 minutes before your reservation. We wanted to spend some time on the small island before our reservation so instead of taking the ocean grill boat, we paid $200MXN to get there early on one of the random boats that were at the pier which was great.
An enjoyable, special experience. Tried various seafood dishes which were all very good. Willson, the great dane, briefly visited our table and was very friendly. Hopefully we'll return in the future.
Ocean Grill was absolutely amazing and truly was the topper to our trip. We vacation to Puerto Vallarta frequently and always try to find new things to do, we finally decided to give this restaurant a go as a girls day with my mom, her friend and my 3 best friends that were with us for my 30th birthday. We took an uber from PV that was around a 45 min drive. Once there, 4 of us chose to hike in and the other 2 girls took the boat. We are all very active so the hike was not as challenging as most say but I could see how it can be for some. It was a beautiful hike, although with no signage on where you're going you do have to be mindful of that as some of the trails look like a trail but aren't. The boat ride we were told was easy and quick. We arrived for our pre booked 11am time slot and we were the only one's there for a good portion of that time. Staff was very attentive and helpful. We each ordered something different and nothing disappointed us at all. I see a lot of people being upset about items not being on the menu (they were out of King Crab on the day we visited), however the location to this restaurant is pretty remote...There are other things on the menu that are just as amazing and it gave us a curve to try something new which we happily did. It was beautiful just being there and being in good company. Worth the visit for sure.
Excellent food, great views, and unique experience! You have to make reservations as the kitchen is small and they bring in fresh seafood enough to serve their guests on the list. Book early, we booked a couple weeks in advance as per other reviews. Overall we both were pleased with the entire experience. At the time of writing this, the cost of a taxi from Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit was $500p (1h15m) and the timed water taxi was free 15 minutes prior to your reservation.
We hopped on a bus from PV to Boca and then grabbed the water taxi from there. On time, easy and fun! What a unique and special place. Greeted with cold towels to freshen up was a nice touch. We had the unbeatable house margaritas and the smoked marlin tostadas to start, then shared the catch of the day with the Ocean Grill sauce and 'fried' plantains (more baked than fried, and sweet but tasty!). The beach cove was a relaxing way to end the afternoon and I sort of loved the outdoor bathroom. So fun! :) The large Dane was sweet and spent most of his time relaxing in the shade. Excellent service and a fun day!
We hiked in from Boca De Tomatlan. It does not look like much from the trail but once you enter this is a special place. The restaurant sits in the cliff and hangs over the crystal clear waters providing amazing views and a unique experience. The service was excellent. We had the catch of the day, Mahi Mahi cooked with the Ocean Grill sauce. The fish was fresh, tender, bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection over a charcoal grill. The owner Ernesto made sure to greet each table.
The owner greeted us at his dock and even though we did not have reservations he made not one but two exceptions as I had my five year old daughter with me. Due to having to disembark from the boat to his dock he discourages children. The staff was accommodating and the food was excellent. My family had the octopus and the clams. My daughter even tried the octopus and loved it. My lesson was learned though to make sure I made the reservations via OpenTable and I most certainly will. Thank you to the owner and staff. The whole experience was amazing.
After a great hike to Los Colomitos beach, Ocean Grill hit the spot. The views were incredible, super service and food. They offer a water taxi back to Boca and we met the owner on the boat! A definite must!
Excellent service and food. A must visit when you come to Puerto Vallarta. The view from the restaurant is amazing and a great place to spend an afternoon enjoying delicious food, refreshing beverages and beautiful scenery.
Incredible experience and excellent food. For sure it’s expensive but it’s more of an experience all around. Everything was very fresh.
We emerged from the jungle to find this gem Ocean Grill. We knew nothing about the restaurant. The place look so inviting we had to stop in. The food and atmosphere 5 stars. We had catch of the day mahi-mahi good portion size cooked to perfection and bbq ribs fall off the bone. Very reasonably priced. Reservation recommended but we lucked in as a walk-in. Followed all PPE protocols. Met the owner and his trusted Great Dane on a water taxi. Great guy. It was a serendipitous day.
Definitely a one of a kind dining experience! Amazing view and incredible food. Love love.
This is a must visit when in the Puerto Vallarta area!! The drive from the Airport area is about 40 minutes but definitely worth it. The food was beyond excellent. Aguachile appetizers, Mahi Mahi and Chicken main dishes, key lime pie and cheese cake desserts, and house margaritas were all amazing! We enjoyed their private beach for swimming, and their lounge area for drinks before getting on the water taxi for the five minute boat back to the dock.
Everything was great — fresh delicious food, great service, beautiful views. OG margs and all drinks were tasty, olive octopus was perfectly cooked, marlin tostadas, warm salsa, and everything else we ate was tasty. We did the hike in from Boca — about 40 mins. I would recommend it, but only if you’re fit, adventurous, and comfortable on dicey paths. It is definitely not well maintained but a fun way to get to the restaurant. I don’t think it’s dangerous but definitely requires caution and you work up a sweat. Other option is the boat which is easy to find from Boca and at scheduled times. Can head to the beach before/after your reservation to hang out and swim. It was 1000 pesos a person (including tip) for our group. We didn’t go crazy ordering but got a good selection and more than enough food plus a couple of drinks a person.
This was a fun experience travelling south of Puerto Vallarta to a little town to catch the Ocean Grill motor boat to get to the restaurant. The website makes a place look quite glamorous, but it is a little tired. However, the food was absolutely delicious. I had the jumbo shrimp and they were grand. The margaritas were super as well. The boat ride… Let’s just say that the little boat was quite full on the way back and I was glad to have had two delicious margaritas. By the way, be sure to find your way to the water closet, which is an experience in itself. It was a fun little place to have a great lunch with friends.
The water taxi is cool and the food is incredible. Oddly we were the only people there but that made it even more special. I’d go again. On the pricier side. With some work on the docking area I’d give it 5 stars. Highly recommend.
The trip on the water taxi was an experience. The did was excellent as well. Service was great. My only thing is that it appears that the beach access isn't really a thing anymore. I was looking forward to that beach, but we weren't able to access it.
We hiked to Ocean Grill from Boca de Tomatlan but you can take a water taxi or, when you make a reservation they will send their own water taxi for you ($100 pesos pp). Amazing ocean views with a large deck right off of secluded Colomitos Beach. Super friendly staff, fresh food and tasty margaritas. We had a couple beers, margaritas, fish ceviche, guacamole and jumbo grilled shrimp with the Ocean Grill sauce. Apps run $7 to $15. Mains $12 (burgers) to $30 (rib eye) Cash only. Opened at 11. Closes early because the beach closes and water taxis stop running late afternoon/early evening.
Nice, but nothing special. You look at the open ocean. 4 drinks and one daily special $110.00 American
First off, they only take USD Cash, no credit card. Luckily two out of the ten people in our group had enough cash to cover everybody. Far from inexpensive would consider it high-end state-side prices. Beyond the so-so food and mediocre service, The View was exceptional🤩
This is our 4th lunch at Ocean Grill, one of our favorite destinations when we are visiting PV. This is quite the lunch excursion, taxi to water taxi to dock and then a good meal in a beautiful location. We started with the fresh guacamole and tuna apps. Not a lot of vegetarian options, since it is a seafood restaurant. The quinoa veggie burger is about it. Tom Sr. Enjoyed the Octopus, Tom Jr. loved the catch of the day, Mahi Mahi. Brenda enjoyed the very large shrimp. We all had plenty to drink, there is a large cocktail selection. This visit we did notice some changes, there seems to be a movement toward more of a commercial operation targeting the larger groups and a permanent menu. There was two large groups during this visit who kept the staff busy so a couple of items were missed during our orders, also very slow response from the waiter. Not the same as our earlier visits, a little disappointed. Hopefully it will all get worked out.
Over-priced relative to Le Kliff, but a great experience overall. The food is good, although they were out of many items when we visited. The hike is challenging but fun, and a few hours at Colomitos beach before your reservation will make for a great day.
Great location. Had the veggie burger. I didn't like how the lettuce was much larger than the burger. I didn't expect the veggie pattie to be home made, which is a huge plus. Overall the burger tasted very good. The fries were original, flavored with lime and pepper. Also tried the shrimp aguachile, I didn't like that it wasn't spicy at all, and the taste wasn't really there. Definitely not an aguachile.
The location is really beautiful and peaceful. Getting there by water taxi was fun, just avoid the scammers. The food was fresh and everyone enjoyed their dish. My only complaint would be that the bar closed a little over an hour into the two hour reservation. I found that strange, and it led to us spending less time there. Overall it was a unique experience that everyone should try!
A friend of ours found this place, so off we went. The restaurant is a 25 minute cab ride and 5 minute boat ride south of old PV. The cab ride cost about $20 USD, very affordable to what we're used to, and the boat ride is free if you're dining at Ocean Grill, which is open only for lunch. Once at the pier in Boca de Tomatlan, you jump into a small boat that takes you to the restaurant which is one cove over. The ride was smooth. We arrived 18 minutes past our 1pm reservation, but was warmly welcomed to our corner, oceanfront table. We didn't experience any problems with tardiness, which wasn't our fault anyway, as the first shuttle boat was full. ATMOSPHERE: The restaurant is built on a deck and into the cliff side. The onwer's huge dog greets guests with a friendly bark hello. There's an open-air grass hut and umbrella-protected seating, with killer views and calming ocean music. A relaxing lounge area with sofas look out onto the beautiful Pacific next door. The single, unisex toilet is up a flight of steps and totally outdoors. It's fairly private with foliage, and as long as you lower the parking lot-like "occupied" arm, that'll keep traffic down a few steps. Very cool, but difficult for those with walking disabilities. MENU: Salad, seafood apps, chicken, fish, burgers, lobster, octopus, ribs. They were out of lobster, scallops, and oysters for the 1pm seating. BEVERAGE: 2 in our party thoroughly enjoyed the green margaritas. FOOD: Shrimp Aguachile I've never eaten raw shrimp before, but it was surprisingly good, and not "shrimpy" tasting at all. A generous amount of shrimp were bathed in a green lime sauce that had a smooth, savory and tart flavor, mixed with cucumbers, and topped with red onions & cilantro. Very refreshing app to start with. Ocean Grill Guacamole Yummy, chunky, and creamy guac! The best yet we've had in PV. The chips were on the thicker side. Caesar Salad Whole baby romaine leaves were coated in a fairly good caesar dressing, sprinkled with soap box cheese (AKA Kraft,) and topped with croutons. Mainstream but good. Shrimp Wow, these 4 buggers were huge! Cooked perfectly in a light butter-garlic sauce with a slight hint of coconut. I'm not a coconut fan but could tolerate it in this dish. Highly recommended. Octopus The partial mollusca sported 3 fairly thick suction cup legs, over 3 small breakfast-style potatoes, topped with a kalamata olive tapenada, and a plate side drizzle of a tomato-pineapple-onion-like salsa. The texture of the octopus was good, tender yet slightly chewy, but overall had zero taste. I come from Hawaii where we make octopus in several different styles with tons of flavor. Not here. Pass. Ocean Grill BBQ Ribs My spouse's dish. The meat was super tender and fell off the bone, and was basted in a traditional BBQ sauce. Very mainstream but good. He opted for a side of fried plantains which I didn't try. DESSERT: We declined any after being told that all the desserts are from Costco sans for one item. Bleh. SERVICE: Our local male server was friendly but not all together there. He hardly checked on us, so my spouse's request for more BBQ sauce for his ribs wasn't met. Dishes got dropped off to the wrong person at the table, and he plainly didn't seem into being there. There as another male server or bus boy, who I think was American that was helping him out, was very friendly and professional. Another guy, I'm presuming who is the owner, checked on us during our apps session. TIPS: Children under 14 are not allowed, which is great for a relaxing experience, but could also be a safety issue due to the boat ride and access to the restaurant. Open for lunch only. Reservations via credit card are required. Not handicapped accessible. There are a lot of house rules, so check out the website before committing. No cell reception. OVERALL: It was almost a half day journey to eat here from where we stayed in PV. Cool restaurant with a great ambiance, okay food & service.
The tuna appetizer was delicious as was the guacamole. The catch or the day needed some extra care, the fish was not moist and it needed some sort of sauce, very bland. I did tell the waiter it was bland and asked for a sauce of some sort and I was dropped off two bottles of hot sauce.. would’ve been nice to have something more matching with a delicate fish.. It would be more delicate if they cooked it a little less. My wife had a burger and it was not very good either, pretty dry. I’ve had better frozen burgers. The drinks were very nice and so refreshing with that view. You are definitely paying for the view here as it’s not cheap. We strategically booked our afternoon meal so that we could catch the later (pre-paid) boat ride back to the shore but we were told we had to get back on the boat as soon as we finished our meals. I had fallen asleep on the bus on the way out to Boca and when they took a sharp turn I had took a huge crash onto the floor so I was injured and not able to do the hike back, it’s not there fault obviously but we wish we could’ve been aloud to catch the later boat to enjoy the secluded beach after commuting all that way.
Amazing experience, amazing views! Really, one-of-a-kind!!! Food was ok. Service lacks quality, attention and there is a lot of room for improvement! Everyone on their cell phones, not attentive, you had to flag them down and watch out if the employees tell you that you can walk over to playa Colomitos, two minutes away, and if you do not pay attention to their panga/boat, they will leave you :( I am not asking for too much, I am comparing what we got with the cost of the experience! However, I am always up to give someone or an establishment, a second chance :)
Stunning view, not great food for the price you pay! Our party of 6 arrived at the Boca de Tomatlan boat port, about 20 min before our reservation time (1:00). The Ocean Grill boat taxi is purple. Don’t stress about thinking your not getting on the boat, they may have to take a group and come back for another. The boat ride to the restaurant is not long at all (10min). When you arrive, the restaurant is perched on the side of a small mountain next to a cove with a very small beach, that you can get to by walking (very cautiously) on the locals make shift board walk. The restaurant itself is beautiful and worth the trip just to experience the views! The food and service however did not meet our expectations. Our waiter informed us that they were out of oysters before we place our order, however after we put in our order, we were told that they ran out of octopus. Very disappointing after you have set your mind on something. I felt the waiter should have apologized, but nope, no apology. We also had to wave him down several times to ask for certain things....serving sizes were very small and pricey. In all it was a decent experience, but could have been so much better if they would change a few things. They also need another toilet! One bathroom for everyone there, so make sure U don’t wait until last minute or you’ll have to wait on the boat to come back!
Amazing views!!! Restaurant sits up on the side of a cliff, overlooking a gorgeous beach and crystal clear waters. Service was ok - they wouldn't split the bill for the 3 parties in our group, even though there was no one else in the restaurant. The food was good but expensive. I guess when you are the only restaurant, you can charge more. :( Careful walking up to the restaurant. Wear shoes if possible. You have to climb over some rocks, walk on a narrow wooden path, and up some cobble stone like stairs, with some areas as rough concrete. Bare foot is possible, but it's a bit of an ouch, ouch, ok, ouch kind of walk. Lol.
What a massive disappointment! We were so excited to experience this alleged paradise. The water taxi was fine, as expected (on time, too). The place is currently a construction zone with the appropriate noises and sights of such. The food was average. Our steaks were very undercooked and nobody came to check how our food was. My wife ordered an appetizer for dinner and it didn't come until the rest of us were over half way through our steak dinners. While eating our dinner, we wanted another drink and something else (that I forget at the moment), but every staff member around the restaurant was standing around staring at their cell phones. The key lime pie was like something from the freezer section of a grocery store. The reservation info says that each seating is a two hour window. The server came to our table before that and said the boat was ready to go. Considering the sum total of costs to do this (water taxi pre-payment upon reservation, R/T taxi from Puerto Vallarta, and pricey menu), it's a definite thumbs down.
We had a very deeply disappointing experience at Ocean Grill. We had looked forward to our meal as a highlight of our trip, but unfortunately, it was a highly unpleasant experience. The service we received was very poor. One guest was served a very thin tail portion of fish that had to be sent back. When a replacement was brought out, it looked much better but was completely raw inside. Another guest in my party ordered salmon, which also arrived raw and was still cold from the refrigeration. Furthermore, when I requested hot sauce, it did not arrive until 10–15 minutes after my son had to get up to find a waiter. He found a group of about five staff members standing around talking. When he mentioned that it wasn't right for them to be ignoring guests, the staff became very upset. Someone came to our table and told us it was time to leave, and the servers began mocking us as we exited. We were never rude; we were simply there to enjoy the food and the beautiful location. We were never offered a second cocktail or dessert, and we refused to pay for the two plates that were inedible. We asked to speak with the owner at the time, as I am certain he would want to know how his staff is treating guests. I believe we were treated so egregiously that I would welcome the opportunity to have a conversation with the owner regarding this matter.
The food was good but too expensive. They had a small menu and they were out of a couple of items which made our choices even more limited. We had the catch of the day which was mahi mahi. Quite tasty & a pretty presentation. The key lime pie was bland and tasted store bought. Beautiful setting. If you want to get to the beach from the restaurant be cautious. The "walkway" was falling apart, extremely dangerous! Most of the restaurant was under construction. There was a beautiful pool that overlooked the ocean but guests were not allowed to use it. Not sure why. The beach itself was swimmable but not the cleanest. Too many water, taxis, garbage and debris in the water. We got to see some cool fish and jellyfish also so be cautious about that as well. Not very crowded. The only services were at the restaurant. So unless you make reservations (online only) and deal with potential death walking across the pathway, you won't have a bathroom available to use.
The food and the service was good, the view is great. But, not worth the risk of suffering an injury when getting on and off the boat. You can fall or smash your fingers, the stairs to get to the restaurant and to the bathroom are unsafe. If you are willing to take the risk go for it.
Paid up front for a reservation 11 am/Nov 25 and emailed to confirm that it would be refunded against our meal - no answer! Walked to restaurant (have been MANY times) and the restaurant was not open - construction going on - full rebuilding of the restaurant was happening with saws, hammering etc Many workers present but gates locked and no response to buzzer. Stayed for 15 minutes and was unable to get any response from workers on site as to the status of the restaurant. Was charged on credit card for no service/lunch and no response from restaurant when emailed again. DO NOT BOOK OCEAN GRILL - this is the second time we have been shafted by them - last time they did mot apply the reservation/boat ride fee back to our bill. Disappointing to say the least. . .
