Small, locally owned, cozy place to eat. Food is cooked right in front of you. Service was excellent. This is the perfect spot for date night.
Tesoro is a Carrboro gem. The menu isn't flashy or following trends, but it's always solid and well executed with high quality ingredients and prep work. Service has always been excellent and welcoming. The ambience reminds me of restaurants like Pasta Palazzo in Chicago - consistent always. I am in love with their olive oil cake - which is always slightly changing it's toppings and pairing sauces to my delight. The quality and texture of the pasta is the best in the region. Love it - please keep me coming back for more. When you dine at Tesoro, they've cultivated an atmosphere where you can truly just enjoy the food.
This is now going to be one of our go to spots for Italian! My fiancée and I had an amazing dinner this past weekend! The food, the vibe, the ambience, the service! Thank you, Caroline for making my first time there so special! Highly recommend the focaccia, local greens, arancini, Lumache, and the linguine.
If you live in the Triangle and haven’t been here do not call yourself a foodie! Extraordinary and highly creative pasta dishes. Caroline, our server, was perfect and described the dishes as if she were making them herself. On-site ownership (Dave) as the Chef proves their commitment.
Tesoro is an extremely small 18 seat restaurant that specializes in mainly Italian cuisine with influences from other cultures. Clearly a Philadelphian in the kitchen do naturally specializing in pasta makes absolute sense. They have a nice selection of appetizers/ small plates and pasta dishes. There was a pork cutlet special the night we were in a well. The asparagus toast was an absolute delight. The special pasta with green garlic sausage with capers as a part on a puttanesca sauce was amazing as were the gnocchi with ramps pesto. Desserts were delicious with an absolute wonderful strawberry preserve on the tart. Great wine selections and we had a great Spanish rosado and hubby finished with a sauterne. There are 3 tables on the sidewalk in addition to indoor seating. With respect to parking, it's horrible so I would recommend the parking deck at the Hampton. Def recommend and we'll be back!
I have been to Tesoro three times now and each time it gets better. Tonight's pasta special absolutely blew me away - gnocchi with ramp pesto. It was divine - a meal I will dream about for months to come. Have also had their version of cacio pepe 3x now. Always a hit. The focaccia is not to be missed either! Their olives (with orange zest!) and the toast (it changes) are great choices as well. The staff are always warm and welcoming and the atmosphere is cozy. It's a small space, so reservations can be tight week-of, but call ahead and they might be able to squeeze you in (like they did for us tonight!)
Went for our anniversary dinner a few weeks ago and everything was amazing — favorites were the ricotta gnudi & pork ragu casarecce. My only wish is that they had the olive oil cake when we were there because we were dying to try it, hopefully it’s back on the menu when we go next time!
I had been meaning to try Tesoro for months and so glad we finally did! Everything was so fresh and delicious. Loved sitting at the counter and watching the action. Don’t skip the olive oil cake! My only qualm is that the wine pours felt small. Note- the pork ragu is not tomato based. Don’t worry it’s still DELICIOUS!! Make sure to make a reservation.
Tesoro was a wonderful experience. About 1 month ago, I emailed the restaurant to set up a surprise birthday dinner for my boyfriend. The owner, David, was quick to respond and provided me with great suggestions/options for the perfect dinner menu. I have been looking forward to this dinner for several weeks, and let's just say it was absolutely PERFECT. We started with the bread and whipped butter/olive oil. The bread was soft/warm and paired well with the soft butter which had just the right amount of salt. The salad had the perfect amount of dressing/cheese and came towered high. It was a great appetizer to share between 2 people. These two starters were paired with the Le Ballon Rose- a great light wine to start with. For the main course, we shared 3 pasta entrees. - Bucatini w/ Pecorino, Black Pepper, Grana Padano: This is the best cacio de pepe dish I have EVER had. The pasta was cooked al dente and the dish was so creamy. - Aglio e Olio: Such a simple and light dish that had the perfect amount of kick to it with the chilli flakes. The taste of garlic was perfectly spread through the dish and was not overbearing. - Gnocchi w/ Roasted Pepper + Lamb Ragu: I am vegetarian, so I did not try this dish, but my boyfriend was blown away. He has never had gnocchi before and he said the pasta just melted into his mouth. The main courses paired perfectly with the Dolcetto d'Alba red wine. Lastly, for dessert we shared the Honey and Fior di Latte Ice Cream. Both were absolutely amazing, but if we had to pick, we could probably eat an entire pint of the honey ice cream! The customer service and ambience are perfect in this 18-seat restaurant. Sitting at the countertop and getting to see the fresh ingredients being used is truly its own experience. Thank you Tesoro!! We will be back :)
Tesoro is at the top of the list when it comes to Italian food! A serious slice of heaven in Carrboro. Great location for this cozy new hot spot! The food is all brought in local and pastas are hand made by the chef himself. The pasta dishes are absolutely fantastic. Al dente has never tasted so good. His staff works their butts off, great personalities all around, from the time you walk in the door to when you’re leaving. A M A Z I N G !!!
I am known among my friends to be a bit of a food snob (especially when it comes to Italian). That being said, I took my first bite of their rigatoni prepared much like carbonara and said "this is what it's supposed to taste like." I am always hopeful about a menu as short as Tesoro's and it is clear that though they have few options, they do them very well. We also had the arancini (very well made in a delicious sauce) and my partner had the casarecce with a spicy pork ragu which was also very good. Another big plus on the food was that everything was nice and hot (which is usually a BIG problem when restaurants attempt carbonara-esque sauces). Now why 4 stars and not 5? The atmosphere was romantic with low lighting and nice open kitchen, but it was a bit loud for such a small restaurant on a Wednesday night. Also, me being VERY picky here, I was served my prosecco in a white wine glass as opposed to a flute so it lost its effervescence very quickly. This is just a small detail that I expect at restaurants with a decent wine menu. I recommend Tesoro for any date, celebration, or a night where you are craving a bowl of well-made pasta. Will be going back to try more.
We finally got to dine here. The greeting and service were good. The lack of cocktails was disappointing. The restaurant is small. The tomato toast was laughably small for the price, but really delicious! The pasta dishes we had were on point and delicious. BUT there needs to be more variety. The lack of seafood on the menu was surprising for Croatian and Italian food. The affogato wasn't available in decaffeinated espresso, which was disappointing. The chocolate tart with cherries was satisfying. We travel for food and I cook a lot, including making pasta. This was a very nice experience, just not outstanding.
A solid restaurant for fresh pasta dishes. I appreciate that the menu is very succinct, but I do wish there were more interesting options. Half of the plates/appetizer section is simple breads, olives, cured meat, etc. I tried the spicy sausage casarecce and the spaghetti. The pasta in both was cooked very well, with nice flavors, however I again wished for something more inventive. They also have a surprisingly good amount of dessert options.
My first visit to Tesoro was long overdue. This is not your traditional mom and pop spaghetti and meatballs Italian restaurant (the types I grew up with in Western NY). The pasta dishes are a mix of Italian and Croatian influenced dishes. Having recently dined at a similar albeit much bigger and higher end italian-croation restaurant in Raleigh (Brodeto) I felt Tesoro was close in terms of quality but just not at the same level of quality dining experience (4 stars versus 5 stars). Here's what was really good: The lumache and the tomato - pepper sauce was very very good. I ordered the lump crab meat add-on and could barely tell that it was included (not what I was expecting for an extra $4). The focaccia bread was very good - it had a nice crisp that included some spiciness and peppery flavor. One of the better breads I've been served in a while actually. We also tried the gnocchi. My wife thought it to be really good. I thought it was just okay. While only a 4 star rating I am eager to dine here again so I can try another pasta dish.
Quaint spot in Carborro, Chapel Hill — difficult to get a reservation. We had it for 8:30 and by the time we got there the special pasta had run out. Pasta was very nice! I got the Malfade and it was a good balance of flavours. The focaccia and olive oil whipped butter were too oily for me: I would not order again. I ordered a pear sparkling drink and it did not pair nicely with the food. I would not order again either. Service was nice, a little slow, but the atmosphere was lovely and candle lit!
Food was great, no issue there. My issue unfortunately lies in the service. My boyfriend and I ordered a ($60) bottle of wine for my (25th) birthday. The server looked at each of our IDs twice and accused us of not being the people in the ID photos. I encouraged him to inspect the date more closely as it was the day of my birthday. He reluctantly said he was paranoid and brought us our wine. This unfortunately kind of killed the vibe right off the bat. I felt it could’ve been handled differently (e.g., “sorry guys, it’s dark in here” or “oops I wasn’t paying attention, let me see that again?”). I get that we are young, which is a good problem to have I suppose, but it just came off kind of awkward. Also, what 20 year olds are ordering a $60 bottle? Again, food was great, but the experience was tainted by the service.
A friend and I arrived on time for our 6pm reservation looking forward to catching up and enjoying a lovely meal. We ordered quickly, and the food was delicious. At 7:23pm just after we ordered our dessert, our server notified us that the reservation following ours had a arrived and we had five minutes to finish dinner and leave. It was a terrible way to end the meal and left us with a terrible feeling. As we were rushing to finish our wine and dessert, the server notified the table next to us that they had 10 minutes remaining to order and finish their dessert. We had booked our reservation on resy and there was no notification that we were limited to 90 minutes. We each paid $90 to be rushed out of the restaurant. Do later reservations get to enjoy a more leisurely dinner? I get that everything costs more these days and this is a small restaurant that is facing cost pressure - I elect to eat locally and pay the high prices to support our incredible local businesses that make our community so vibrant, but you can't have it both ways, Tesoro: either chose to be a fine dining establishment with high prices and a 'no rush' approach, or let people know that you'll usher them in and out and they have a 90 minute limit so they can make an informed choice about what they are buying. Being kicked out put such a damper on an expensive meal.
Pasta was absolutely delicious but I will never be back based on service. After being handed the bill and before receiving our espresso order we were asked to politely hurry up because there was another reservation waiting. As soon as we were handed our espresso we were told there is a 90 minute max and we needed to leave. I didn’t even finish my wine or espresso. We spent well over $100 on wine, small plates, entrees, and espresso. It’s wild to me that we would be hurried out while we still had full drinks and food on our plates. I’m disappointed this was our experience, since they had such terrific food. But if we can’t take our time to enjoy it, what’s the point?
We had a reservation for two and one child joined us. Instead of accommodating us, the host seated walk-ins first and informed us that our meal would be timed. The attitude made it clear we weren’t welcome, so we left. Definitely won’t return.
