PHENOMENAL Michigan Avenue restaurant. On an extremely chilly, 8-degree Chicago winter day, The Gage was the perfect place for my college friends and I to escape to in the cold to enjoy warm, gourmét comfort food. Every dish we tried was outstanding. The Coconut Curry was deeply flavorful and comforting, with a rich, aromatic broth that felt tailor-made for winter. The Coq Au Vin seemed beautifully tender and hearty, with layers of savory flavor that tasted slow-cooked to perfection. Their Chips and Curry were far more elevated than expected—crispy, satisfying, and paired with a bold, well-seasoned curry sauce. The Agnolotti was equally impressive: delicate pasta, perfectly cooked, and filled with balanced, indulgent flavors such as the mushrooms. Expect to pay more—around $40–$70 per person for a standard meal, and higher if you opt for novelty or signature items like their steak—but the quality absolutely matches the price. The atmosphere during dinner was dimly lit, warm, and inviting, and the staff were kind, attentive, and efficient throughout our visit. You’ll likely be dining alongside large business groups whether you come solo, as a pair, or with family, but they were not at all bothersome to our experience at least during dinner. Overall, an exceptional dining spot that delivers great food, atmosphere, and service. A truly FANTASTIC Michigan Avenue restaurant.

This is a really great restaurant located right in the heart of Chicago. One of the things I appreciate most is the menu – it’s limited in size, which makes it easy to choose without feeling overwhelmed, yet every dish offered feels carefully curated and unique. Even though the menu isn’t huge, the selections are creative and interesting, with plenty of options that stand out from the typical fare you find elsewhere. The food itself is excellent – every dish is packed with flavor and clearly made with attention to detail. You can tell the chefs put thought into balancing the ingredients, and it makes for a memorable dining experience. The service is another highlight. The staff is attentive and quick, so you never feel like you’re waiting too long. There’s also plenty of seating, which makes it comfortable whether you’re visiting for a casual meal or with a group of friends. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting – laid-back enough to enjoy a slow meal, but still stylish and modern. It’s the kind of place where you can sit back, unwind, and enjoy good food without any rush. Overall, this restaurant is absolutely worth a visit if you’re in Chicago. It combines great food, fast service, and a welcoming vibe, making it a spot you’ll want to come back to.

This was an excellent experience. I was seated promptly at a nice quiet table near the back. They didn't mind I needed time to get my coat off and settled. I had the Buffalo Check, it was a really nice spirit forward drink. The special was a halibut with a beurre blanc caper sauce, broccoli and potato pave. It was amazing, I cleaned the plate! Glass of white wine paired very well. For dessert I tried the sticky coffee pudding. Sauce was perfect. Carmel ice cream amazing. The pudding was a tiny bit too dry. The cream sherry pairing was perfect. I will certainly come here again.

I had an excellent lunch at The Gage in Chicago, the perfect place to take a break while exploring the city. What truly made the experience outstanding was the exceptional service provided by José G. He was attentive without being intrusive, genuinely friendly, and incredibly professional. José anticipated my needs before I even had to ask and made thoughtful recommendations that turned a great meal into a memorable one. It’s rare to find someone who combines efficiency with such a warm and personable approach.

Everything we ate here with our party of 5 was delicious. The service was great, the ambiance was classy and nicely lit with large booths or even bigger tables for larger parties. I ordered the Irish Breakfast for late brunch and it was so good, instantly transporting you back to Ireland with the 2 eggs 🥚, black pudding, baked beans, breakfast sausage, brown bread and rashers! Can't wait to come back here.

The food was excellent and the service was welcoming and great! My boyfriend and I went for a dinner date and our favorites were the house country bread w/ brie and fig jam, prime filet mignon, and poutine! After that, I devoured the apple galette with caramel ice cream (an absolute must try)! I’m already looking forward to trying the burrata toast and scallops on my next visit. Thank you, Billy and the entire staff, for an incredible experience!

Cliché or not, is the best burger in town. And you never lie about a great meal. I’ve had many burgers in my life, but never a medium-well this perfectly executed intensely buttery, rich, and stacked with bread-meat-bread perfection. If you’re visiting Chicago and want to experience a true classic done exceptionally well, The Gage is a must-try. Because in the end, the first bite is the real judge… and this one found gold. 🍔✨

Walked in and was seated immediately with no wait in the outdoor area. Very nice vibe throughout the restaurant. We ordered a couple appetizers including the heirloom tomato and burrata toast and truffle fries (both of which were outstanding). Main courses included coconut curry, Amish chicken roulade and (on the specials) pork shank. Portions were great and the food was deliciously prepared. Service was good, but nothing exceptional. Server was attentive but not overly friendly. I would definitely go back, but would probably sit inside partly due to the occasional pathetic drivers on Michigan Ave who think they’re in a Too Fast Too Furious sequel. It was extremely loud at times, but no blame to the restaurant for this - just be aware if you sit outside.

Stopped in for the restaurant week lunch special. Food was delicious and service was terrific. Seafood gumbo is awesome. I’ve never had a scotch egg and it was a real treat.

The food and cocktails were excellent! At one point, the manager Fallon came out to talk with everyone at the bar for a little bit and gave us his card. Great food, great service, fun atmosphere! Will be back.

Cami was our guide to a wonderful evening, she provided lots of recommendations & we had a lovely time enjoying the truffle fries, french onion soup, Caesar salad, oysters, appetizers, chocolate mousse and baked apple dessert with cider ice cream. We also loved the wine and cocktails, the Kir was a favorite. Highly recommend for a night out in Chicago!

First time here and had lunch. Loved the scotch egg. I never had one with a soft yolk and it was delicious. I can never pass up fried pickles, the coating was light and crisp with a nice dipping sauce. My entree was the blackened fish sandwich and the blackened seasoning really shines. Sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly and attentive. Would definitely recommend!

I had an amazing experience at The Gage in Chicago. From the moment I walked in, the staff made me feel genuinely welcome. The service was top tier, professional, attentive, and warm without being overbearing. Every recommendation from the server was spot on, and you could tell they really cared about making sure guests had a great time. The atmosphere perfectly balances upscale and comfortable, classy but not pretentious. And the food? Absolutely delicious. Every dish was prepared beautifully, full of flavor, and perfectly portioned. Overall, this was an unforgettable dining experience that exceeded expectations. I will definitely be returning and recommending The Gage to friends visiting Chicago.

What an amazing experience we had at The Gage. Went for dinner and sat outside. Service was very responsive and polite. Appetizer was the poutine and let me tell you, it was delicious... A must order. For the entree I got the curry noodles with shrimp and it was very good. Also got a special Martini which really hit the spot. If you're in Chicago, check it out!

My number one brunch spot in Chicago! Right in front of the crown fountain. On mother’s day weekend We walked in around 12:30 pm and were immediately seated on the patio, surrounded by beautiful purple tulips, it was the perfect setting. The food was absolutely amazing, and the coffee was unlimited, rich and flavorful. Our server, Jake, was incredibly helpful and made the experience even better. Don’t miss the crème brûlée it was perfectly done and full of flavor. I’ll definitely be coming back. A must-visit spot for brunch lovers! Thank you Jake

I love this spot. The restaurant was aesthetically pleasing. They had different colored tiles and bricks and cool floor designs. We sat at the bar and were served by two very nice bartenders. It happened to be restaurant week so we got to try a lot. I had a great espresso martini and my husband got an Irish cream hot chocolate, both were excellent. The first dish was a pub scotch egg and I’ve never had one but it was very yummy. I was honestly pretty satisfied with just that but my second course was the steak frites and it was a very decent piece of meat on top of good fries. Tasted like there was some vinegar, garlic seasoning but I could be off. Got the chocolate mousse for dessert and it was very good. My husband got the lobster roll and it was up to his standards as he often complains they aren’t fully enough of lobster but not this one. I’d absolutely come back, great spot in Chi-town.

Amazing food, service and atmosphere! Our server, Jose, did an amazing job from start to finish. Highly recommend his section, the venison burger and the chicken noodle soup!

Decent food, metro feel, busy during the eve. Did not have to wait for a street-side table for 4 around 6pm on a weekday. Walked there while staying nearby. Really good Irish coffee & the lobster was well seasoned!

Had a nice brunch. The steak and eggs were delicious. The chilaquiles with sausage were delicious and not greasy. The seasonal G&T was crisp. The cranberry pomegranate drink was outstanding!!

We’ve just enjoyed our second meal at The Gage. The food is excellent, a diverse menu of American favorites with a twist. The fork and knife wedge salad with pork belly is amazing. (I asked mine to be served pre-chopped). Others in our party raved about the Amish chicken roulade and the burger. The servers are attentive and gracious. I also highly recommend the truffle fries and the seasonal ice cream. Reservations recommended at least 24 hours in advance. And good news for out-of-towners, considering the location of the restaurant and the quality of food and service, the food prices are reasonable.

We enjoyed dinner at The Gage on the Fourth of July! Conveniently located right across the street from Millennium Park. Would highly recommend the poutine appetizer and scallops entree. The service was incredible and ambience very nice, we loved our server, Gerardo! Highly recommend The Gage for a fancier night out!

This place is AMAZING. Went here super last minute but it was the best decision we made. It was super busy but that didn’t stop the quality of the service and food from being amazing. We tried the fish and chips and the burger, absolutely delicious. Definitely recommend to anyone in chicago!!!

The Gage is an absolute gem in the heart of Chicago. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between upscale and inviting, ideal for anything from a casual night out to a special occasion. I have to highlight the fish and chips, easily some of the best I’ve had anywhere. Perfectly crisp batter, flaky fish, and house made tartar sauce that ties it all together. It’s classic comfort food done with real attention to detail. The service is consistently attentive without being overbearing, and the drink selection is top-notch, featuring a thoughtful list of craft beers and cocktails. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, The Gage should definitely be on your list.

Great service, great food and drinks. Went around 2.30pm and it is not crowded at all. Waitress is attentive from the start to the end without being too much overbearing. Food is great. The mushroom bolognese is the star of the meal. Scotch Egg is decent, I wish the sausage is more spiced, juicier, and hotter. The salt and pepper martini is awesome and as the name advertised, it is on the saltier side. Great portion for the drink though.

I was on the hunt for a fun happy hour spot and stumbled upon this gem. The vibe is super chill and inviting. I went ahead and ordered the grilled oysters, truffle fries, and French 75. And let me tell you, my food and drinks were absolutely delicious.

Excellent- was seated immediately on a Saturday night, apps and drinks came out right away, timing with our meal was impeccable. Our waiter was incredible! Food was delicious- and it’s hard to impress me with a salad but the wedge was perfect with the pork belly done so perfectly!

We had a fantastic night here, while on a work trip to Chicago! Food was delicious, hot, and just beautiful! Fallon and his team went above and beyond to make our evening special, and even took us on a little tour around the venue, telling us all about the owner and his journey as an Irish American. Beautiful venue, great service, even better food. Our server, Stephanie (I think was her name), was amazing! So funny and just a lovely human. Can't say enough about this place- you must go!

Right after checking into our hotel, we headed to this restaurant and had an amazing experience. The Vince sandwich was absolutely delicious, and the fish and chips were delightful as well. The owner added a personal touch, walking around and chatting with customers, which made the atmosphere even more enjoyable. I truly loved my time there and can’t recommend it enough

We were able to grab a seat at the bar. Reservations are recommended. This is one of the few good spots to eat in a tourist area. Bartender was great. He was super busy but was very attentive to us. My date got the chicken fried lobster, a fancy version of the fish and chips. 3 lobster tails fried (Chicken fried steak batter) with some fries and jalapenos. It was very good but heavier of looking for something lighter. I got the diver scallops. Fun and refreshing and light meal. The sauce went very well with the lobster. We ended with a double espresso and a dodgy Sunday! Then went for a long walk down Michigan ave!! Definitely go back once in the area again. Great Job, The Gage!

The Gage offers a consistently enjoyable dining experience in a lively and welcoming atmosphere. The food is flavorful, well-prepared, and thoughtfully presented, with a menu that combines classic favorites and modern twists to satisfy a variety of tastes. Portions are generous, and everything feels fresh and carefully cooked. Service is friendly, attentive, and professional, making the meal smooth and comfortable from start to finish. Overall, The Gage is a reliable spot for great food, excellent service, and a vibrant atmosphere that makes dining there a pleasure.

We always enjoy coming to The Gage for great food and atmosphere. This time, we want to give special thanks to our waiter, Jose, a real pro who made us feel like royalty. His food and wine suggestions were excellent. He has a very attentive and pleasant manner without hovering. Service like this is what makes us want to keep coming back, and why we choose The Gage over other restaurants in the loop. We also noticed the music choices were very cool and fun as well. The Gage does a great job at being sophisticated without having a stuffy atmosphere. Looking forward to our next visit!

This was a good dinner. I had an incredible glass of wine off a reasonably priced wine by the glass list full of actually interesting wine not your typical by the glass offerings. One of the best bread appetizers i’ve had recently. Irish soda bread leaning. Coq au vin for the entree was decent and good rich flavor. It did not take itself too seriously just good classic cooking. Only takeaway was the pearl onions were not cooked through and the whole dish was a bit toward room temp like it had sat for a minute before coming out. service was decent. Our waiter was not as attentive throughout the meal, having to flag hm down after several minutes to order entree and get the check for instance. We weren’t too mad as we had good wine and appetizers! He was very helpful in selecting a sample of armagnac to try- a 1oz pour if a very nice bottle for only 5 dollars! Overall recommend for the vibes. the restaurant is beautiful and the fixtures are incredible

We ate outside in the covered area near the street. End of January and plenty of snow on the ground. Still warm while eating and drinking :) The food was good, not great. Seemed like elevated pub fare for some of the plates Drinks were made well and the wine was delicious with plenty of options. Definitely will be back to try different food options

We went for Restaurant Week late lunch. The food was very good while service was great. We had a nice booth and found it very conversational friendly. Next time we will explore more of menu and try bar seating as well as Happy Hour.

I had dinner at The Gage and really enjoyed the creative twist on classic American dishes, especially the bison tartare which was delicious and well-prepared. The drinks were great too, but the prices felt a little high for the portion sizes. The atmosphere was lively and stylish, though it got pretty loud at peak hours

For a place to showcase what Chicago has to offer in restaurant-style American Food, this is an excellent choice. I was looking for a restaurant to give my cousins visiting from Poland a good first taste of the American dining style, and this place delivered. It was near 4 pm when we walked in, and I was pleasantly surprised they could seat our party of five right away, especially with no reservation. The inside is interesting, with at least four distinct areas that each have their own vibe (ranging from open-spacing, bar seatings, and quiet/secluded areas for max comfort). Presentation-wise, the table was clean and ready for us, but I did notice the surfaces on top of the seating cushions and framing had a layer of lingering dust, looking like they hadn't been wiped in a few days. Our server greeted us immediately and was a great help with the menu. The main drink ordered was the Negroni, and I appreciated that they let me choose the gin. It was well-made with a fragrant orange peel. (Photo attached). For appetizers, we got the Truffle Fries and the Meat & Cheese Board. Both were good, but for a group our size, you'll likely need to order 3-4 items to feed everyone equally. My main course, the Fusilloni, was a surprise. I didn't expect the entire dish to be green, but it was a good, creamy pasta with a proper portion size. (Photo also attached). The staff were friendly, checking on us occasionally without being intrusive. The whole experience was smooth, from getting in quickly to leaving without any hassle. Most importantly, my cousins were very happy with their meals and felt it was a great example of quality American food. For that reason alone, this is a solid, safe bet for a great meal out, especially if you're hosting guests.

I came here after visiting Navy Pier and the other Chicago lakefront parks. The hostess was welcoming but there wasn't any outside dining available. There were open seats when we arrived, but they must have been reserved. The food was great, my daughters and I enjoyed everything that came to our table. Service was a bit spotty. There was also a tall, middle aged blond man that did nothing but stand in the dining area, staring, and taking notes. He added a weird vibe to the restaurant. The Gage is inviting but very dark inside. This restaurant seemed overstaffed, more employees than customers. Burgers, steak, salads, seafood, and a great bar with a bunch of unique drink and cocktail recipes. The wait staff was cautious and thorough when asking about food allergies. This restaurant deep fries a lot of lobsters, so the other fried foods have a risk of cross contamination. They do a great job of asking customers about their allergies.

I randomly stopped here from brunch after visiting some of the nearby attractions—great choice! The hostess was very welcoming and the food was good, but service was a bit spotty. They also didn’t have a regular table (or inside seating) available at the time; eating a meal on the high table was a bit of a struggle esp on a hot day.

R

I have been to this restaurant for lunch and dinner probably about 20 times over the 15 plus years they've been open and I have never had a bad meal. The service is excellent, the waitstaff is friendly and informative, the atmosphere is good though it can get a little noisy at peak times, and the location, on Michigan Avenue, is great, especially for visiting Grant Park and the Art Institute

Awesome meal at The Gage - everyone was friendly and nice. They were pretty busy when we were they so we had to ask for our drink order twice. I have special dietary requirements and they messed up my meal the first time, but once it came out again it was delicious.

I want to give 5 stars but the bread of smoke salmon BLT was a bit hard to eat. There was a alot of bread left over on the plate and the server didn't say anything. Consider they told us that salmon BLT was their best seller, maybe I expect a bit more. All the other foods were amazing (burger, fish and chips and fried chicken sandwich).

I bring a lot of out of town guests here, and frequently host lunch meetings & special work outings here. One of the best restaurants in downtown Chicago. You can dress up or keep it casual. The seasonal gin & tonic is something I look forward to every time! The first time I enjoyed one it had fresh basil and pink peppercorns. The staff are very accommodating and professional. The food is outstanding and can be creative. It’s an eclectic mix. There are a few times where there were some misses on flavor or execution but fairly consistent with the hits. It can get a little loud at peak times but that’s just a part of life. People are loud, ya know? Long time patron and will continue to be! I will also note that they really do a good job of accommodating food allergies. My boss is allergic to gluten, dairy and soy and it can be tough to say the least to find places that can and will look for solutions. If you see the green curry or the Big Gage on the menu, get it. Winners!

D
David Busby

Horrible wait - after our wait for a table - 25 minutes to get 3 drinks (Diet Coke, old fashioned & sprite), another 20 minutes to get the bread for the table - dinner took over an hour after ordering. Spent almost 3 hours. Food quality was excellent but the service was well below par for this calibre of a restaurant.

A

The food was surprisingly mediocre. The patty on the burger was unevenly seasoned. Some bites were super salty. The fish had a unpleasant fishy smell. Service is good tho.

G

The atmosphere was great and the food looked nice, but the taste was terrible. I would only recommend burgers and fried foods. The biggest issue, though, was the service. The waiter did not treat everyone with respect, and that is unacceptable. This was Valentine’s Day and she missed out on a great tip because of her attitude. This restaurant needs to get it together good vibes don’t matter if the food and service are poor.

L
Linh Phan

Very pretty atmosphere but food was sooo bad. We got the steak and venison rack and it was so bad, never have I ever had steak this bad, it was burnt and the server forgot to ask how I wanted my steak, I didn’t realize until after. The season or sauce on the venison taste off, maybe that’s just their style but it just wasn’t good. I was really excited for the steak but it was so sad lol. Ribeye was not good quality. The server also stopped trying after our appetizer. I love the oysters and the drinks were amazing. I have never really experienced this at a fine dining restaurant. Me & my boyfriend love trying different fine dining restaurant but this wasn’t it. If you go here just get the burger. The steak was not worth $72.
