High quality Chinese food. Lemon chicken and Chow Mein is my go to its always fresh and delicious

I have been going here since my family first moved to Chico. I have rarely ever been disappointed with the quality and quantity of food I get from Egg Roll King. Their pork fried rice and pork chow mein have always been a staple to their menu. I'm not a huge fan of sweet and sour or orange chicken, but my friends always enjoy it when we get it. Their potstickers and eggrolls are fantastic! Hot and sour soup and pho always hit the spot. The workers may come off as rude and standoff, but that's because of the language barrier. They run a great business that has last for years. It may not be Panda Express, but it is family owned local business with delicious food that I will continue to support.

This happened to be my first experience with the "Egg Roll King". If I was only grading them on first impressions it would be a long struggle just to get to first base. It was the night of Christmas Eve and it was raining. I was placing my order inside and I was getting rained on. This was a to-go order which it really doesn't matter to me what it looks like. The establishment was clean and I had no concerns regarding anything else. So, here it is: The taste was truly fantastic, definitely some of the best Asian food out there. The quantity was perfect, just a little amount left remaining for the before bed snack. Two thumbs up and 5 stars for the "Egg Roll King". Thanks for a awesome meal.

I've been coming here since 1982! I later worked at a now gone family warehouse that supplied area small businesses with staples, cigs, paper goods...the owner of Egg Roll King would come in to purchase items & though we couldn't speak the same language, we figured out a code. I moved away 10 years ago and when I return to visit, I always make a stop & get the shrimp egg rolls. Crunchy, fresh shrimp sweetness & snap & I can count on everything tasting as I remembered ! Plus, the jasmine ice tea is ultra refreshing. To me, they are the ard working pressed for money student, the newly married family kind of place with ample servings and prices not having changed much in 40 plus years. I can spend $25 there for 4 people. Best value in town. Thanks to all of them who have started the restaurant with their kids, & then their own family members later on to be successful Chico natives! IMO, great folks make great food ! My favorite Chinese-American food!

I am a lifelong fan of the Egg Roll King, I have been eating there for nearly 30 years. My favorite dish is "tofu and veggies with steamed rice" it's not on the menu but the tofu is fried and delicious. The veggies with it are delicious as well. Bock choy, zucchini, diakon, broccoli and baby corn. I also love their pot stickers. My wife always orders a couple of veggie egg rolls. I absolutely love their pho soup as well. I have tried many other dishes over the years and been very happy with them too. I must say that they have a particular way about them that can turn people off so that they miss out on the delicious food. You might be sitting at the drive through menu waiting to order without a response for a while, sometimes a long while if they're busy. I sometimes cough or clear my throat to remind them that I'm still there. If you don't want to deal with that, you can always just go inside and order something to go. Also, the way they speak to you sometimes can feel a bit abrupt. They are very nice people and not trying to be rude but it can feel like that sometimes with our inflated standards of service. There food is made fresh and therefore be ready to wait. This isn't a microwaved hamburger like you can get next door. It is fresh and delicious. I just love this place, it is one of my favorite locations for lunch or dinner. You need to be patient sometimes but the reward is worth it!

Convenient drive thru with fast service. They always take my order perfectly and never leave anything out of the bag. I love coming here as many of their chicken dishes have a beautiful outer crunch to things like the orange or sweet and sour chicken. The chow mein and fried rice are delicious regardless of meat preference. The pot stickers are huge, meaty, and taste wonderful. I always get a few orders of the crab and cream cheese wontons because they make them SO good. Wonton soup is very hearty and flavorful and comes in a large reusable container. The best drink I've had from them is their Tai iced tea, it is AMAZING, they mastered the tea mixture, I couldn't even wait to get home before I finished it. Always my favorite place to go for good take out, an old location but always a gem.

Amazing food. The wait can be long, and the owners can be a bit quirky and rude, but it's all part of the experience. If you're not a little baby, you'll survive a short tempered old man, or a slight wait for your food. Definitely recommend.

R
Robert Wertheimer

Everything considered, this restaurant is great! I expect a wait every time I use their drive thru. Who would have thought that it takes time to cook up food. I would give Egg Roll King four stars because the grounds does need some attention but I will give them five stars to even out the haters.

The best Chinese food in chico. You may be thrown off by how long your order took. But I prepare for it and am thankful. They cook ever order fresh for you. The service is amazing and the people who own it so kind and respectful. I highly recommend for new chicoians or people stopping by.

I have been eating here with my parents since the 1980s and it is to this day one of my all time favorite chinese restaurants. I always said that if they served their food on fancy platters, it would be just as good as, or better than, any of the most fancy and expensive chinese restaurants anywhere. The chefs are very talented cooks who put great care into every aspect of their cooking. It is a family owned restaurant who are respected, hard working, and successful members of our community who deserve to be such. They have kept the prices of their drinks the same since the 90's and their food is very affordable as well. Equally enjoyed by families and college students alike. Highly recommended!

I love this “greasy chopstick”. Reminds me of New York Chinese food. Everything is good. It’s all fresh and tasty, but the place is a dive——as all authentic Vietnamese, Thai or Chinese food should be! I’m a fan. Beats anything Asian food in Chico.

S

I'm 41 years old and this place has been here since I can remember. I grew up eating this stuff and it was always quality, it still is. The only critique I could give this place would be to replace their speaker system which allows them to talk to the people coming through the drive-thru, that thing has been so bad for so long it's time they upgrade.

Great portions! Great food! Great prices! A drive through! Great after a long day of work, or whatever occasion. Really great pho! Along with everything else, I was just personally surprised they had pho. Hidden gem I hope everyone goes and keeps this place alive.

This place isnt going to wow you in any way other than the food, I get the Hunan Chicken and the Chow Fun combo plate, they are made hot to order and $25 feeds 4 people

Best comfort Chinese food in Chico. They wait to put the sauce when you order so it isn’t all soggy when you pick up. Pretty decent pho for a drive through place too!

My family loves this place! The dry braised chicken and pork fried rice are so good that I usually order an entire to go container of dry braised chicken and they only charge $23 which is a really good deal considering they pack it full and we have leftovers for a few days. We also order a whole container or two of the pork fried rice cause I could eat that for breakfast lunch and dinner it never gets old I could live off of it lol there has been a time or two that the food was just okay but everyone has their off days they’re human completely understandable. I’ve been buying from this place for years and years it’s been a hit almost every time.

I have never ate here until last week. I was craving house chow mein and the places I normally go were closed. So I was passing by here and said what the heck. A few people I know use to go. And I got to tell you it was pretty good. S better price and large portions

The food was really good, we had during and pork-fried rice so nothing too fancy, but they have a very large menu. The food was reasonably priced and we got alot of it for the money. There is a drive thru, which is convenient for late-night runs when you don't want to dine-in. Not sure what the dining area is like. It is cheaper than fast food and tastes way better, so drive past the McDonald's, Egg Roll King is right behind.

I've been eating here for over 30 years and it's been nothing but consistent. This is THE authentic Asian American restaurant experience. Small business owned, straight to the point service, grandma working in the back, dingy atmosphere, and amazing food with huge portions. The house chow mein here is the best chow mein I've ever had.

Best general's chicken I've had in a while. Will have to stop in again. Wish they were open more late. I also wish they did not use styrofoam containers for super hot food as this leeches harmful chemicals into your food

The food is pretty good, great that they have a drive thru. The staff/owners are pretty no nonsense, not mean or rude, just very straight forward. The kitchen looks pretty clean, but the decor is a bit dated. Not sure what this building used to be, but it was definitely fast food and they haven't changed much in the 9 years I've lived in Chico. Give it a try for some quick Chinese food, they have the usual stuff on the menu. Rice could use more soy sauce, but the orange chicken and sweet and sour pork are delicious go to's.

M

Egg rolls are the BEST but use to be significantly bigger. They give you a good amount of food.. I try to bring cash since they charge extra for cards. Really awesome pho. May have to wait (depending on what you order) but worth the wait!!

R

Food is amazing. They could improve on their customer service but some say its worth it. Chinese food authentic as it gets. Their portion size is friendly and most of the stuff in their menu is delicious. Best chow mein I've had as well.

I love this place they have great food I usually get the shrimp egg rolls and the garlic fried chicken wings the only problem is the wait time is so long I waited in the Drive-Thru for about 20 minutes but it was worth it. The is always piping hot.

Great pho!! Food has always been fresh although we come with extra time because of them cooking everything fresh obviously it takes a little longer. We don't mind. Could use a little nicer decor or extra cleaning

Really good food at good prices. The staff could be friendlier but still a regular eating spot for me. The vegetarian egg rolls are superb and a good value at only $1.50 each.

Just the right amount of spice and smoke on my favorite dishes of Kung Poa shrimp and eggplant in spicy garlic sauce. Dumplings are great too. The drive through could us an update but service is still timely, you might need to say hello to get noticed when it is busy.

I've been coming here for years. I love the taste of the food. Very good. The place is super dirty-a hole in the wall for sure. I overlook it for the taste of the food. I would like the community to know that each time I go I am overcharged. The owner tells me a price without using the register and he overcharges .50-1.00 every time. Is this happening to you too? Please be aware of this. Do the math beforehand.

It took over 20 minutes just to get to taking my order. Still had to wait another 20 minutes until I got my order. There were only 2 cars in front of me. The drive-thru takes forever. It's convenient not to get out of the car, but the food is not that impressionable.

J
Justin Bushido

Id say the best thing I have ever ordered here is the Chicken Teriyaki Bowl. The dish was very well packaged and delish. I believe the prices are worth it based on portion size and quality of the food. However, I have a few complaints though... I ordered the "Fried Crab Meat and Cheese Wontons" and got over cooked wontons. Edges were dry and almost like they were microwaved. The food is mostly fresh so be prepared to wait (Longest I waited was 35mins but it was slammed about 5pm on a tuesday). Lastly, it was very difficult to hear through the drive through speaker box. Overall a good experience. Thank you Egg Roll King I will come back for another visit soon. :)

L
Lindsey MYERS

I love the food and inexpensive prices. The staff is rude as they can be. They always have been. It's like a Chico tradition. If you didn't know it, it might be a bit alarming, she is very very rude. Just don't make small talk, speak clearly if orderimg at the drive thru speaker box but don't expect her to speak clearly to you because you wouldn't be able to hear her thru that distorted old thing. The decor is very very old and dated. The fish tank has needed to be cleaned for the last 50 years. It's pretty warm inside on the summer days but they have a very good rating from the health inspector, it is very clean in there. You can see thst they really keep everything very tidy it's just old, dated and rude. The cheap, delicious food and prompt fast service really makes up for it tho.

R

I don't often go to places that are just okay. I just don't have anything glaringly bad or great to say here but I'll go over what I had. The fried rice was decent, with chunks of chicken, which was a huge surprise, but could have used more seasoning. They went huge and easy on the peas, which was nice. The pot stickers were fluffy and good but no sauce! That's okay though, I can make my own when I get them home. The the sweet and sour pork was pretty tasty but there was something off and I'll get to that when I get to the chow mein. The egg fu Yung was generous, but unfortunately the gravy on it was not. Still, good quality. The chow mein was where I noticed something off. It was a bitter, chemical taste and it was in everything just a bit. My guess is that, in order to save costs, they use canola oil instead of peanut or vegetable (soybean). It didn't ruin it for me but it wasn't a benefit. Overall it was fine, but nothing incredible, except... The foil wrapped chicken was absolutely delicious. I would go back just for that. A rich, savory sauce that permeates the chicken thighs, they were the star of the show by far. As others have mentioned, there's a bit of a language barrier but the order came out fine regardless. No napkins unless we asked though.v My only suggestions for the owners? Upgrade to peanut oil and bump the prices up like $0.50 to compensate. A bit of oyster sauce really helps deepen the fried rice flavor but that's just my preference. The low score for atmosphere can't be helped. It's a covered fast food building, so it will always have hard seats and just have that aire. Overall, will probably go back just for the foil wrapped chicken and pot stickers.

Well it's kind of a mixed story. I was going to my favorite buffet around the corner( that is closed on Monday 🙄) And I've drove passed this place for years and never stopped in because it looks iffy from the outside. (See pics) The parking is oddly structured, the building itself has been remodeled several times poorly but it was clean inside. It's fortunate for new customers that the menu (see pic) is numbered because the place is ran by a elderly family or 2 couples with poor English skills. Yeah the service was slow but the food was good and plenty. I had one of my Asian favorites, Garlic Eggplant with rice, good but not over the top. They have a standard extensive Asian menu, lots of choices, and reasonably priced but looking back the man that took my order never used a register nor gave a receipt just rattled of a price off the top of his head and I don't think it matched the posted prices. Not cool... Ya can't get 5 stars if you short your customers, lack atmosphere and service but good food will get steady local traffic.

Decent food. Light on the protein and veggies. Lots of fried rice and noodley chow mein. Drive- through convenience when I was in a hurry.

Just ordered. There was a strand of hair in the dish. The customer service was alright. The wait was expected, considering the fact that they started making the dishes once ordered. I had better chinese food. The beef broccoli was gross and also had a weird smell. The food overall was disappointing and some was just gross.

S
Shannon Cross

Beef and Broccoli was all broccoli and very little if any beef. Kung pow chicken was a giant zucchini, cut up with lots of peanuts and very little chicken maybe a handful of tiny pieces.. fried food tasted stale. Crab Rangoon was gross on inside and tasted like it was fried yesterday and nuked for my order to warm. Rice tasted like yesterdays for sure. Egg rolls tasted old too. First time trying and disappointed. Way too expensive and not hungry enough to eat. Sadly, I won’t be back. $31 down the drain. 🥴

This used to be a childhood favorite of mine but the quality of what I used to love getting there has drifted pretty far from what it used to be. However, they at least sell cream cheese wontons for maybe the lowest price in town currently, and fill them very generously compared to anywhere else, although the ones I ordered today were slightly burnt. They're also – to my pleasant surprise – put into paper bags for to-go orders, and not into a styrofoam containers like most of the other stuff they sell.

food is decent. i dont mind eating here. its the service they have to work on. its terrible. you wait 10 min. before getting helped/ order food. then you have to wait another 20 for the food. all they got to do is work on having better service then maybe I will give them a better rating

The wait was absolutely horrible, they didn't even know we were at the speaker to order. All the cars were honking to get their attention. As well as them being rude while we were trying to order.
