If you are looking for a healthy, delicious, fresh and authentic Japanese restaurant in Long Island… Plan an evening out to Takumi Japanese Restaurant! I had the Japanese Style Sushi meal which came with 9 beautiful and intoxicating pieces of high quality sushi, chefs choice! I even started with the mouth watering grilled Himachi Kama which was totally to die for. The good news is… Once you eat here you will feel full and satiated all night long! You won’t want a second meal later. Very wonderful and homey experience! The prices are worth every bite and reasonable, I’m totally coming back!
I went with my husband and received the most outstanding service from the chef and his wife. I honestly can say this will be my go to restaurant. They really took the time to interact with us and teach us the proper Japanese customs. I can't stay anything but beautiful things about them both. Thank you for the wonderful experience. ❤️❤️
This restaurant was nothing less than amazing. I don’t usually write many reviews but the service of the people running it was incredible. This restaurant gives a very cozy vibe but not cramped. We ordered a couple rolls, some regular suhi, and miso soup. DELICIOUS!! I’ve never eaten my sushi rolls so fast. The food came very quick and it was very flavorful. I will definitely return here! Also seems like a smaller maybe family owned business and it’s really important to support those. Great restaurant overall 5/5 stars.
Absolutely loved this place! A HUGE thumbs up! The owners were running the place, she was super super super nice! Took my order with patience and care. Small, very quaint and quiet. I too my sushi to go and it was excellent, even the second day. There was ONE sushi cook, which is the way it should be, in my humble opinion. He took EXTREME care in preparing my meal. You can feel the love, when you are the sushi. They gave me extra wasabi without an attitude. Both the waitress (owner) and chef, they were SO SO sweet and grateful for my business. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT.
10/12/24 Excellent quality Japanese food. The #2 Yokozuna (Spicy Crunchy Crab on Top of a Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll) and the Volcano Roll (Spicy Crunchy Tuna on Top of a California Roll) were outstanding. The service from the owners was also great! Friendly, knowledgeable and had great suggestions. Will definitely return soon! Unbelievable! Freshest sashimi ever! Had the platter that consisted of tuna, salmon, marinated mackerel ,sardines etc. Cozy and clean establishments. The service and friendless of the staff is unmatched. I will definitely be returning to Takumi.
Found this place on Google (same day) and went for the first time tonight! Great service, food, and atmosphere - You can tell that the owners put a lot of effort and love into their craft and making their customers feel welcomed. It means a lot as an Asian person, to find a restaurant that holds true to its cultural authenticity - in its food, approaches, ambiance, etc. You want the low-key “hole in the wall”restaurant that stays true to themselves, make customers feel welcomed/attentive towards their needs, and to have a nice experience all round! This will be my new spot and I am excited to try the ramen as well!
One of the best authentic janpanese restaurant in Long Island. Their sushi and sashimi are excellt in quality. Highly recommended.
I can’t even. Amazing! Atmosphere, authenticity and family environment. Family owned and ran by two of the most proud individuals we’ve ever had the honor of dining with. Every time we’re in the area, we must stop by to enjoy the most tasteful and elegant Japanese Cuisine on the island HANDS DOWN!!!
One of the world's best Japanese restaurants. Period. Their sushi is of outstanding excellence. Original, down to earth, non pretentious raw goodness. Honesty created from fish, rice, seaweed and wasabi, it is not a fashion statement, but one of values. So is the hot meals one can get there. Japanese soul food. The equivalent of coming home after a long journey to your mom's home cooked food. A gem on Long Island.
The ratings speak for themselves! Really enjoyed the sushi here. Very filling and delicious. It was my first time here and I noticed every person that walked in seemed to be regulars. Had the shrimp tempura roll and the #2 Yokozuna roll (I believe that's the name) Also, had some hot sake and edamame. Beyond amazing. One woman dining in was saying how she drove from Bellport because she loves the sushi so much! Highly recommend <3 The people there were very friendly and welcoming. Couldn't help but smile the whole time.
Takumi is one of the best, most authentic Japanese restaurants on Long Island. The food is incredible, and everyone who works there is so friendly! Everything about Takumi is just right, definitely a 10/10.
Just went last night for ramen, and WOW! Probably some of the best ramen I’ve had. The duo working was incredibly friendly and gave such a nice vibe to the place. The restaurant itself was very clean, and well decorated. After trying a bunch of ramen restaurants on the island I could say I’ll definitely be going back.
Best authentic sushi on Long Island! I would give 6 stars if I could. Authentic Japanese atmosphere, very friendly owners/chef, delicious food. I highly recommend it!
So today I was able to come to Takumi and they had Ramen on the menu. From what I've been told it's generally only on Tuesdays and Fridays for lunch. Excellent. Flavors were rich, bowl was filling, will absolutely be back. Not to mention they have amazing sushi as well!
This is my favorite Sushi Restaurant of all time. Chef Yuki is an artist with many of his own personal dish creations that delight the taste. His Sushi Pizza is our favorite appetizer. Many times we never look at the menu and just ask him to surprise us and we are always delighted beyond belief with what he comes up with. His drink specials are just the same. Do not miss this special restaurant.
The owners run this place (they cook and serve) and you can tell they put their hearts into their food and customer service. There are a lot of Japanese restaurants in commack and we have tried most. This is the ONLY one that feels authentically Japanese. They will treat you like family and you will leave with a full belly and a smile on your face, guaranteed.
The cooked Japanese food here is delicious. I ordered the shrimp and vegetable dinner. My husband ordered the gyu Don, which is thin sliced marinated beef over rice; Before the entree, they served him a delicious soba noodle soup. The woman who served us is co owner, and her husband does the cooking
The best sushi I've ever had! So fresh and so authentic. The owners are lovely people! My wife and I love coming here for dinner.
Best Sushi on Long Island. We used to go to the other places in the area like Nisen, Izumi, Aki, etc....but none of those places can match the great flavor and authenticity of great sushi and Japanese cuisine. The owners are great people, Chef Yuki's sushi always has fresh clean favors, and their specials are amazing works of art. My advise is to let the chef choose for you, try the omakase and Takumi for two! You won't be disappointed.
Small little place but is the best sushi around. I highly recommend Yuki Pizza! Would love to see more lunch specials with salad/soup but you cant go wrong with any of their rolls, always fresh!
I’ve been eating here for years and the quality of the food and care that the owners put into each dish really shows. Japanese owned, this place really speaks to the culture as well as how much they care about their customers. Highly recommend the Pork Katsu-don and the Gyudon Soba Set
The owners, Kiyomi and Yukio are so friendly and accommodating, it's like going to a family dinner. They serve very traditional and authentic Japanese food and it's where I go when I miss the taste of home.
We had such a wonderful experience here! The owners, a kind husband and wife originally from Tokyo, make you feel so welcome from the moment you walk in. The food is absolutely delicious—authentic, fresh, and clearly made with care. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and you can tell how much pride they take in sharing real Japanese cuisine and hospitality. A true hidden gem, highly recommend!
My wife and I were looking for an authentic Japanese restaurant this evening and we stumbled across this amazing restaurant. Our experience and food was top notch and exceeded our expectation. The service was fantastic. The waitress so very sensitive to us and provided a second to none service. The food was the very best Japanese food we've ever had. The chef personally came to our table and served us. It was such a special touch to our experience. We were deeply moved by their hospitality. This will be a restaurant that we will continue to return to. The service, food, price was just right. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a truly authentic Japanese experience.
We had a lovely dining experience at Takumi. It was our first time there and the food was fresh, authentic and the service was extremely friendly. We loved the cozy atmosphere. At this time vaccinations are a must which we were more than fine with as we have immunocompromised family members.
Really liked the food and service. Will definitely come again!
Stopped in hoping to get some ramen, but they don’t offer it on Mondays. Went with the udon noodle soup, a few apps, and a sushi roll. It was great and will be back to try the ramen. The service was amazing and very welcoming. Great find while on that side of Long Island
Amazing authentic Japanese food. Place is quiet, clean, and cozy. House and wife are chef and waitress and they are so friendly and welcoming. Soups were great and squid and meat platters were so light! You could eat here and have a healthy meal. My new favorite place in Long Island. Don’t be fooled by the outside appearance of the place.
Everything was phenomenal. We had the soba noodles, fried oysters, takumi for two, the yellowtail jaw, and chirashi. I only have two pics. Anyway, I expect to become a regular here.
The ramen was exquisite... I can't believe how good it was. The owners were so friendly and kind. Highly recommend to anyone who wants an amazing meal!

Greatest little place, owned by the sweetest most authentic Japanese couple. Best sushi I have ever had, incredibly fresh, simply delighted to be handed hot steam towels to clean my hands and face before eating, loved the experience, great choices- can’t wait to go back. Don’t let the tiny facade fool you- you are walking into a delicious restaurant- not to be missed.
My friend took me here who has been a few times. I enjoyed the authentic Japanese atmosphere and cuisine. The miso soup is different the what I’ve typically received, but very good, maybe more authentic? Also their most popular roll, which is a california roll with crab (I forget the name) is amazing. The crab is fresh and lightly fried. They also have a selection of authentic Japanese sodas and drinks. Overall I was very satisfied and will be returning!
We had an exceptional first experience at Takumi. The staff went above and beyond, making the evening truly memorable. The food was not only authentic and fresh, but bursting with flavor. We had the pleasure of meeting the chef, who was incredibly kind. We’re already looking forward to returning to see Kiyomi and explore more of the menu!
Small cozy place with Quality authentic sushi coming from very humble owners who put pride in their work (17+ years). It is definitely the best sushi I’ve eaten. The bluefin tuna was delicious. I have eaten at the best sushi places in NYC and I can tell you this is better. I highly recommend.
I've been going to Takumi for close to 8 years now. This in my humble opinion is the best Japanese food on long island. It's run by the sushi chef Yuki and his wife Kiyomi who is one of the most attentive servers I've had the plessure of having. This isn't another fake Japanese place run by Chinese owners, the couple is actually from Tokyo. You can order just about anything from the menu and have an amazing experience. This isn't just a sushi place, it's a large sample of a lot of Japanese food such as katsu and ramen. The ramen is served Wednesday and Thursdays and is always chefs choice and I've never been let down. Overall this place is amazing and I highly recommend it, 10/10.
The best place for sushi on Long Island The staff are super friendly and serve up the best authentic Japanese food outside of Japan. It feels like you're home. They make everything in-house from the miso soup to the chipped ice that goes in your drinks. Everything has care, love and thought in it. Truly an experience to be enjoyed over and over again.
It is not near any major shopping centers so it feels like it's off the beaten path. A restaurant owned by husband and wife. With the husband being a professional chef from Japan. Some items are even made in house like a banana caramel pudding that we had for dessert. It is very refreshing to see a husband and wife own and operate a restaurant like this. I had an absolutely amazing time and it even feels very authentic.
The only authentic Japanese restaurant I havr been to in Long Island. I don't think I will ever go to another japanese restaurant other than here in Long Island. I had Blue Fin Tuna sashimi, Salmon Don (donburi meaning rice bowl) and Zaru Soba (cold soba noodle). All very delicious and cannot wait to come back. The conversations with the waiter and chef (wife and husband) was also very fun. Thank you for the great food and conversation. - Ben
Very good food, always fresh and high quality ingredients. Very friendly staff. Our favorite place.
Perfect date night or family restaurant. Family run Japanese speaking small hole in the wall. My wife had the Nabeyaki Udon and loved it. Kids gobbled down the noodles. Kids had the Teriaki shrimp and liked the shrimp. I had the Beef Negimaki and it was really good. Sized in perfect portions for chopsticks (I admit I used a fork).
Very good food, always fresh and high quality ingredients. Very friendly staff. Our favorite place.

I'd been to Takumi several years ago, but it was the first visit in a while. We had a party of 7 with reservations for a Saturday night. Our group are all frequent diners at various Japanese restaurants. This is a tiny restaurant, but they try to make the most of the space. As far as I know, you need reservations, at least on the weekends. We were seated right away, and there was one other party of 3 or 4 dining while we ate. Another party was finishing up and leaving as we were getting settled, and I saw then turn another group away, so they are taking precautions for Covid. The waitress even stopped me & gave me hand sanitizer before I could sit down. I was a bit surprised by the menu, though. There were no bento- box style meals. I didn't see any great dinners featuring multiple sushi rolls or sashimi pieces. In fact, for a restaurant that says its all about authentic Japanese food, the few "meals" were less than inspiring-- a Maki roll dinner with 3 very basic rolls, like a California roll & 2 other equally American rolls. They had some interesting specialty rolls. But only a la carte, not in any kind of meals. And the waitress was really friendly & got into the spirit, as it was a birthday for one of my friends, but not overly informed. For example, one of my friends asked how big the Maki rolls were, as she wasn't sure how many to get. The waitress said 8 pieces, not 6. My friend asked about that, as we are used to 6 pieces, & the waitress said people to get more pieces. So we asked if the rolls were made bigger than average, or just cut into more pieces? The answer was one we then ended up hearing multiple times in the night- that this is an authentic Japanese restaurant, not a Chinese Japanese Restaurant, so they do things the authentic Japanese way. How did that answer the question? (P.s. they cut the same size roll into 8 pieces instead of 6), The "this is an authentic Japanese restaurant, not a Chinese Japanese restaurant" started to get annoying when we got the food. 2 of us ordered shrimp tempura Maki rolls. We have ordered these rolls at JAPANESE restaurants across LI, NYC, & even other states for tears, & you get a piece of shrimp tempura, sometimes with avocado, sometimes cucumber. Roll it in rice & wrap in seaweed, add tempura sauce, any toppins, and slice. That is also what the menu said, but the shrimp in our rolls was boiled shrimp, not shrimp tempura. There was no tempura batter anywhere. Instead of apologizing or even saying she'd check with the kitchen, the waitress gave us a hard time. Saying we must be used to Chinese Japanese food. "We are one of the top 100 Japanese restaurants on LI & that's shrimp tempura roll." We tried to tell her no, & even showed her it was boiled shrimp. But we were just wrong. In my experience, at the very least someone should have said sorry, we use a different recipe than other restaurants. It was things like that, and all the "Chinese Japanese" talk that got to us. The shrimp tempura rolls were not shrimp tempura & not good. They were out of the seaweed for seaweed salad, which was a disappointment for some. But the specialty rolls were very good. Geisha roll & Ichi roll were excellent. An udan noodles bowl was very good. Desserts were also delicious. And as I said, the staff did get into the birthday & socializing with us, which was fun. So the night had ups & downs. But I would stay away from the shrimp tempura rolls if I go again!
Service was excellent, sake was good, sushi was average... way, way too much reliance on the surimi based crabstick and sauces to spice things up. Would love to see real crab because they have a few rolls that would go from "meh" to "hot damn!" real quick if they just made the switch. I do want to note that the udon based dish I had with steak (honestly cannot remember the name and I do apologize) was delicious. That and the service kept this from two stars. Why the harsh grading? Because sushi restaurants that don't use real crab should know better. In truth, though, they deserve 3.5 stars so please consider this review just that: 3.5 stars out of five. Great people, decent food... you won't regret it but it won't necessarily shout loudly when you're listening for a place to go.
Did not enjoy the sushi. My husband and I ordered the sushi for 2 platter and when we got home, the sushi was primarily rice and the fish portion was minimal. We called the owners and they were defensive saying this is how sushi is in Japan. I have had much better sushi at Kotobuki and would probably go there as it never disappoints.
I don't know where these raving reviews are coming from! Went there and first bad sign was that the place was empty. OK well, I'm adventuresome. Quickly found out why. It is the WORST sushi I have ever had. We had sushi for 2 and it was bland and tasteless. Only one way to know if this review is true, compared to the raves, but we'll never go back. Take another 5 minutes and drive to Kotobuki. A little more money but outstanding. Evidenced by the line out the door.
I am very disappointed with my lunch order from this restaurant today. The vegetable tempura appetizer was extremely undercooked, the batter was still soft and gooey near the vegetables. The vegetables themselves were extremely al dente. The sushi was all rice and hardly any fish. The rice did not have that vinegary sushi rice flavor and tasted just like white rice. They forgot to include my salad with the order, and I was really looking forward to it because they have a unique dressing that I like. I'm willing to pay more for good food but this was quite a bit more expensive than most and way subpar.
Became very ill after eating their shrimp and vegetable tempura. Went to bed early and woke up in the middle of the night feeling nauseous. Tried to sleep it through only to wake up at 3 in the morning to have multiple exorcisms out my rear end. I had an episode of family guy where the whole family was viciously vomiting except out my rear end as I sat in the dark feeling like dying. The waitress was very polite and nice. Can't say the about the shrimp and vegetable tempura. The crust was not crunchy, it had somewhat a crusty yet soft exterior and felt very oily biting into it. The Vegetables were very bland. I don't like wasting food so I tried to truck as much as I could. Very disappointing experience. Food is very expensive for the quality. Perhaps I may have had a better experience ordering their sushi, but I will not be returning.

The staff and and the atmosphere are both amazing. I loved the time and attention they gave us. But some hard truths. We ordered a salmon avocado, but the avocado was unripe. Ruining the dish. The up selling for additional dishes felt pushy at times and the rice used in all the dishes was subpar. I'm truly disappointed. I was hoping this would be a better experience in terms of freshness, taste and texture. Again. This isn't a reflection of poor service. The service was great. But the food wasn't good.
