First timers, kids loved their breakfast. Pancakes, eggs, sausage. Adults were pleased. My husband had the farmers breakfast I believe and he was pleased. I had a ribeye with chilaquiles and they were good as well. The food is good quality. The reason for my 5 stars is the service. They staff is very friendly. Checked on us several times but didn't over do it just to make sure we were taken care of. Definitely will be coming back.

Great Homestyle Family Restaurant. Great place for those who love your grandmother's old school home breakfast. The lounge open at 10 on Saturdays. There you can bring a date, or your entire family and enjoy the best Bloody Mary great conversations and good food. Quiet cozy very comfortable atmosphere. Employees are welcoming, polite, and courteous. Try it and you will return several times my father's been taking me for many years as he has passed along with the original bartender who made up the Bloody Mary mix I still love to be there with all the other employees that are still there. My children who started off in the lounge sitting in a booster chair or high chair are now grown and still go there to this day. Great place to call your family's restaurant.

This place is a wonderful throwback to '70s coffee shops. Seems mostly original decor that is truly well maintained and preserved. Very clean and comfortable. Breakfast eggs were hot and fresh, bacon on point, excellent croissant and tasty coffee. Great friendly service. I would highly recommend

One of a kind! My retired partner ate there as a child, the old 60s favorites and still eats the fried mush (!) when we go there! But has good modern food and tasty newer Mexican food too. Chocolate eclairs are to die for. A nice separate small sports bar area for that corner bar feel, but thankfully the main dining has NO televisions. Some of the flavors are very tradition American flavor, like the wine sauce on the hamburger and mushrooms steak (I skip the wine sauce in favor of A1, but my sweetie loves it! Good good comfort food at a good price with good variety! Good job, Stox!

I really enjoyed my breakfast here. They serve filipino breakfast and it was good! With a side of waffles it was affordable and our waiter Armando was awesome!

The nice customer service and good menu is why you’ll see regulars come back all the time. There is a personal touch to their friendly service. The baked goods are why I often pick up to go and the coffee get NO COMPLAINTS

First time here and will definitely be a return customer! I love it here! The ambiance is literally like a home town local dinner. Legit like Luke’s dinner from the show Gilmore Girls. The staff are super nice and attentive. The food was delicious 🤤. Had the Belgian waffle breakfast combo. My husband had the Corn beef hash and O’Brien potatoes and he loved it! This will be my husband’s and I new Sunday morning breakfast spot. Definitely check it out.

I really like this place. Very old school diner which is part of its charm. I've only been the for breakfast and it's never a disappointment. I've had the quiche, chicken and waffle, panini, Irish breakfast all of which are great choices. I've never had a bad experience except for one time when the server spilled a drink all over me... the meal was not charged so all is forgiven. The coffee is a little weak so I usually have gallons before I leave.

Classic American restaurant that’s still around. I’ve come here with my dad since I was a child and I will bring my children here as well. Highly recommend to go on Sundays for the chicken soup

This is a great, old school, American diner that has a good menu, good prices, homemade pies, good quality food, and a bar to boot. The decor is very dated, but to me, that's part of the charm. The service is very good and friendly, and I haven't eaten anything yet that wasn't very good. This place is a local gem. If you like Norm's, then you will like this place. The portions aren't as generous as Norm's, but it has a similar feel to it.

First time visiting this restaurant. Good old fashioned diner. Food and service was as good. Try the open face turkey sandwich. It’s comes covered in gravy with a side of mashed potatoes. Their coke slaw was good also. The server said everything is fresh made. Good selection of homemade pies too! We will definitely be back.

Our first time here and we had a great time. My wife really enjoyed here Mother’s Day breakfast. The food was really good and Lupe and Pilio I believe was his name I hope I’m not getting his name wrong. They were really nice and attentive. Pilio has a great attitude and is really attentive with your drinks. Hi’s a really nice guys and really contributes to a great first experience in this place. 👍👍👍

Comfort food, superb quality & hospitality is on point. My favorites are the salads, turkey dinner on Tuesdays; no wait, the open face turkey sandwich. Too many choices, to pick from, plus the pies are so yummy. Love the bar. Kevin is amazing & so is the gal that works the bar during his off time. Oldie but a goodie. Supporting our neighborhood restaurant versus chain restaurants just feels right.

Adorable time capsule- really laid back, lots of old timers, opened in 1962 and they’ve done an admirable job not changing much. Great selection of pies including little pies (not all that little, either) for $6.

It's a diner that still cares about service and solidly good food. Asked for a coke, they asked if RC was OK. I didn't even know that sentence still existed. I had a really great burger and an RC Cola, it was a real good day.

This place looks like it would be a 90’s diner. But the food is super good, they keep a clean place. And the food comes super fast! (I should have led with that)

The atmosphere is amazing. The front of the restaurant looks like an old timey diner that has been very well maintained but not remodeled (which is a good thing). In the back is a bar which is quite intimate and a nice place to have a late breakfast on a Sunday morning.

This is our go-to hangout spot for breakfast, dinner, or just for a little pie and coffee. My girlfriends and I have been visiting this local spot for years and always enjoy our time and meals there. This is a great home style comfort food kinda place. Food was great had the Fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy and carrots. Excellent flavors really takes you back to Midwest and Southern style cooking like mom used to make. Restaurant also has an attached cocktail lounge again very old school and reminded me of times gone by. Service was very personable and prompt food was brought out hot and was delicious. Restaurant and lounge both were exceptionally clean and I for sure will be making this a regular stop going forward. Prices were more than fair and the portions were on target. I highly recommend this place to anyone in need of a little comfort and destress. Very enjoyable experience. Thank you to the chef and staff.

This restaurant has been here since I was in high school, back in the 1960s. It has the vibe of a 1960s upper class diner, but it’s family friendly and the food is very good.

Wonderful place to enjoy breakfast, mimosa brunch, or even a cocktail and watch sports! The service is excellent, especially if you are lucky enough to be served by Betty "Boop", who has been here for 32 years, and, boy, has she seen it all! You will dine with the locals of Downey, including the mayor, and if you are lucky, they will save you a seat "with your name on it".... Great French Toast, and breakfast fried rice with eggs and avocado on top! And their homemade PIES! Fresh whipped cream pineapple cake! Yummy! There's a reason it's been going strong for 50 years!

Talk about going back in time! What a wonderful little spot this is. Feels like you're stepping into a Time portal into the '60s. Growing up in the '80s there were still a lot of places like this but not anymore. There's only a few and this is one of them. The food was excellent to service was great. I didn't want to leave. Oh and they have lottery at the front. I made 50 bucks on some scratchers so breakfast was on California lottery!

Historic location with great homestyle atmosphere. Great selection of classic diner favorites and homemade desserts. We tried the Belgian waffle, veggie omelet and a raspberry cream cheese pie. Prices were a bit on the pricier side for diner fare, but everything was delicious and service was great.

In the entire world, this is my favorite breakfast spot. I was introduced to this restaurant by my mother many years ago. After we went home after a military tour, we would go to this restaurant for a terrific family breakfast. Armando, has been here the whole time, and his service is absolutely impeccable. He is fluid he is capable and he is able to talk to a variety of customers and make them feel at home every single time over these last decades. I always get the corn beef hash because that is my favorite item. However, their selection is the best in the world. If you’re looking for classic americana. If you are looking for classic California diner experience. If you’re looking for a nostalgic place for a terrific meal. Do not hesitate.

Stox is a very nice old style diner, the furnishings are brilliant and the customer service is just as exceptional. They have a Bar, Bakery, and diner all in one. The Bar is on the other side of the building so its nice and quiet on the opposite side. They have a very large assortment of pies and cakes and are even diabetic friendly if you want to custom order a pie. Lorenia made us feel right at home and suggested their house salsa they make, which was great. They also make their own syrup which is very falvorful. Thanks Lorena and Stox, be back again!

VERY Good breakfast food ..BETTER than IHOP, Dennys, and Norms. The atmosphere is outdated.. stuck back in the 70s- 80's perhaps. So if looking for very nice exclusive experience..this is not the place..but looking for great food, clean, friendly service.. not too long of a wait yet. (Once the Norms people find out about this hidden jewel . This will no longer be the case)...This place is recommended for sure..plenty of parking.

The food and the staff were great. The only drawback back is the seating is mostly booths, and I'm a somewhat of a big guy the space wasn't adequate for me. But I can't hold that against them...will return but maybe for takeout.

Stopped in here for breakfast with a few co-workers. Hostess was friendly there was no wait, seated in minutes.Waiter was fast, service was great, food was excellent and had good flavor. Friendly staff, good quality food and good price. I went in with my parents on a Thursday morning. the waiter was awesome, anticipating our requests and refilling our drinks. The service here is pretty good. We have been coming here since I was a baby. We've had some down sides with management but overall the food is delicious! We also like a few of the waiting staff so it's all good. I highly recommend for breakfast! The stox burrito, ham steak and eggs and french toast are the best!!! No complaints, what we ordered was prepared they way you would expect and pretty quickly. Food was nice and hot, fairly hearty. Restaurant was also clean. Food was nicely priced, I would come here before going to fast food restaurant. When we finished, I asked if I could take a mini chocolate cream pie home. They had ran out of the chocolate ones. The waiter did offer the other pies, but I said it was okay. He was so nice and asked if the pastry guy would make one more before leaving for the day. The waiter asked if I would wait and I am so glad I did. This little chocolate creme pie was so good and decadent. I would come back just for the pie.

Great place, good food, old fashioned! The service here is always great and friendly. Great pancakes for breakfast, their burgers and sandwiches are very good and they have one of the best if not best chicken pot pies I've had. Speaking of pies, their pies are fantastic. Great place for them during the Thanksgiving weeks. They also have great cream cheese pies. They also have a cocktail lounge where you can get a drink, order some food and watch the games! Highly recommended!

Had the Filipino breakfast. It consists of pork longaniza, garlic fried rice and an egg. You can order chicken longaniza. The longanizas were tasty. They are a bit sweet. The food here is pretty good but I wouldn’t call it the best breakfast in Downey necessarily. I also had a pretty good individual sized cherry pie. Parking is ample. They have a large lot.

M

First time here. Plenty of parking. Accidently walked into their bar which is attached. I thought that was neat, you don't see that anymore. Ordered a breakfast panini and french toast. Food was good. The place is a bit outdated but it is well maintained. Service was great!

S

Staff was nice. Sat outside in the back in a big tent. Inside looked nice, I got to peak on the way to the unisex - mens room. Needed spicy brown deli mustard, instead of yellow mustard to go with the corned beef Ruben. The sandwich was good. As was the bread. Fries were not well done - as I ordered. They needed salt ((or something) as there is no salt and pepper on the table. Prices seemed a little high on the limited outdoor/to go menu. Particularly for the breakfast items. Though there is a St Patrick's Day special that looked interesting.

D
Dwayne Henry

Food is good. Service is good. If you pay with a credit card, you are charged 3.75% as an “adjustment amount” and they don’t tell you about it. You would think the cost of using a credit card would’ve incorporated into the menu price.

K
Karolsnewday

This place appears to be a legend and I think pretty popular with the seniors. WHAT I LIKED: The two mini combo sandwich with ham, turkey, and dried cranberries is a great quick pickup lunch. Perfect if looking for beach or picnic food for an outing. It comes with a bag of chips. DOWNFALL:. This place was due for a remodel 10 years ago. Just look pass it and sit down if you want a quiet not so fancy place to eat.

A

Service was good. The busser/dish washer was super friendly and should be the manager at this restaurant. He was fast and making conversation with with everyone. Will be coming back. Side note: the pancakes were kinda stiff. Might want to revisit the recipe.

Ordered a BLT; it was skimpy on the bacon for sure and the tomatoes were kinda green. I requested "lightly toasted" that was apparently disregarded by the cook; it was so over toasted that I wanted to send it back but we waited a longer that average time already. I enjoyed the fries. The waitress was attentive and outgoing.

M

The food's kinda decent (not really) but I can't bring myself to pay $20+ for bacon, eggs and a cup of coffee. The waitress is awesome and all but I won't be returning.

I stopped here a couple of weeks ago. I grabbed a chocolate creme pie to go and it was absolutely amazing. The lady working the cashier was amazing and offered great customer service. I decided to grab some chilaquiles to go, and honestly, they were pretty bad; it was as if I ordered chips with a splash of salsa. The pie, however, was five stars.

Josh Welch

Food: My friend and I stopped in for something light while waiting. We got the chocolate pie—it was good, though I was surprised it was a whole mini pie, not a slice. Solid snack. Service: My waiter—a bald guy with a medium-thick mustache—was just going through the motions. Dry, not very engaged. Hardly checked on us. Atmosphere: Cool old-school local restaurant vibe. I liked the look. Beyond that, it was what it was.

I've lived in the area but never bothered to go in, but noticing the very high reviews here on Google, I was like wow, let me check it out. And it was an average, there's nothing wrong but nothing special other than the incredible customer service. They make u feel at home and cook regular meals. At least the stuff I ate. I usually try locations for new and unique tastes. But most of my food lacked taste, and u seem to season your own food to taste..

Rueben sandwich wasn't a thrill. It was edible and did not taste bad but that's about it. Got a brownie from the case and it was great. I'll try again cause this is the kind of business I want to support. Very cool old school vibe. Has a separate eating area in the lounge if you are lucky enough to work where it isn't forbidden to drink at lunch.

Erick Martinez
Erick Martinez

I'm surprised it has so many 5 stars. The food is very basic, same with the flavor, If I'm eating outside I expect top of the line cooking, otherwise I rather just eat at home. Needs many upgrades, specially in the restroom, and everything inside feels and smells old. Bottom of the story, this is one of those restaurants you go once, but never go back again. False advertising, not the best breakfast in town for sure.

K
Kymeth K.

Ordered the special salad they serve on Thursday. It sucked. The dressing was horrible and the salad was nothing special. My friend ordered a sandwich as said it was ok. Nothing great. Atmosphere is nice, but for the prices of the food we choose to go elsewhere. 2 stars for good service, and nice atmosphere.

Yolie Ornelas Romero

I understand the climate and the effect of the pandemic but come on. The food I received was cold, the prices were too expensive for what I received which was a breakfast sandwich, biscuits and gravy, and orange juice. Also, a cup of Oj was $8, mind you the cup size was quite small and I had to ask for refills, which cost extra. I think this place has potential in doing better however,it can update its aesthetics with the time a bit. I do want to appreciate the service though, thank you for good service.

A
Arthur Watson

Hash browns were crispy and good. Biscuits and gravy were lackluster. And for the price you think they could give a real hand made sausage patty. The one they serve is a mass produced rubbery floppy disk. Like breakfast equivalent of bologna.

j

Very pretty interior but me and my mother went one time and they had us waiting for our food for 1 hour. We ordered our drinks got that quickly but I ordered a sandwich and my mother the steak breakfast. Our waiter only came up to us once after our drinks were served and that was to tell us our ticket was lost and that’s why our food was late. Still we stayed waited another 20 minutes for our food and it was terrible. My sandwich was hot and soggy more bread then meat. My mothers steak was burnt and so hard to chew. It tasted like the grill. We don’t even finish our food. The waiter came back and told us he’d give us a discount because we waited a long time but it still wasn’t enough. We were disappointed and disgusted. They only have hype cause of their waffles

I went in at 1:00 pm on a Sunday. The restaurant was half empty. The food felt too rushed. The omelette was under seasoned. The potatoes on the side were over peppered and burnt. The pancakes were average. On the menu the syrup they have is either maple or boysenberry. When I asked for pancakes the server did not clarify which syrup I wanted and I ended up getting boysenberry. The default should be maple as both syrups look the same but taste completely different. The best thing about the restaurant is the hospitality.

Only booths, no tables. Very cramped seating. I have a 6'3” son who could barely fit. Below average food for above average prices. Absolutely nothing special except the full bar attached. Clearly a local nicotine naugahyde hangout. Will not return, and feel like I was riped off. Jack in the Box would have been a hardier breakfast.

I've seen this place for years, always wondered about it, husband and daughter and I went for lunch, it wasn't the worst thing in the world, but it was tasteless, and bland, the wait staff stood and spoke with a table of people across from us the entire time we were there, and it was loud, and hard to enjoy our meal, distracting, I ordered a turkey sandwich and the turkey was good, but had absolutely no seasoning, like someone forgot to even salt the meat. Daughter ordered French toast, the syrup was watered down, didn't even taste like syrup, it was just sugar water. I know this place has been around for years, and I'm sure they have a loyal customer base, but it could be better. Much better.

$4.50 for Ice Tea? Yikes. Lunch ended up being $37.00 for one... While it was good, it's a coffee shop. I paid $17.00 for a pork chop, ok, fine. Asked for salad, $1.95, fine. Got 1/4 of soup, thought it was included, oops, not. Ended up paying for soup, really???? Won't be back. Way too much $$$$

I will never eat here again. There are meal that cost less then NINE EGGS. All I was told is that I was paying for the quality of eggs. SMH

I'm surprised at all the 5 star reviews....my dinner experience was lousy....I ordered breakfast for dinner obviously expecting fresh food.....it was the leftover food from the morning thrown into microwave and reheated.....the chicken fried steak was cardboard hidden under warm goop considered country gravy.....today's prices are so high which compounded my anger....I still tipped my waitress her 20% but that cook should work in a kennel bc he makes dog food.....how do you serve that ??? And how do you allow that to be served ??? Look at the cook area, they have 2 microwaves sitting in prominent areas for all to see, they don't hide the fact that they rewarm leftovers from unsold dishes....ugh I should mention it was my 2nd time at Spox....the first time was previous month for breakfast and I ordered chicken fried steak with country gravy....it was delicious....that's why I ordered it again when I went back to Spox a month later for dinner.....this dinner experience was terrible.....

The food is great and the service too but the only thing that concerns me is the they tried to charge me 2 times, I called them and the manager said to talk to the bank, unfortunately the manager didn't took me seriously. So I did called my bank and they said this was a fraudulent transaction from this restaurant. Please people be careful and check your bank account. The charge on my card was $141.85 l, I'm not making this up my bank rep told me this was a fraudulent transaction, and I had to block my card and they would send me a new card.

I been going here for years during the week breakfast experiences have been great. I went yesterday Sunday in the afternoon it wasn’t busy we sat ourselves the blonde waitress took our drink order and gave us menus. 20 minutes passed she didn’t come back to take our food order or bring our drinks. We got frustrated and left we will not be going back we felt like she didn’t wanna serve us and we felt very unwelcome we wont be going back ever again.

Used to come here all the time because it was big on family which is what I loved but the female bartender offered such a negative experience it was enough to overpower the positive ones.

Today, Sunday Oct 27th, we were shopping with my wife, and just on the way we thought of stopping by for breakfast. The truth had never caught my attention to eat in the place, but we decided to venture out. My wife ordered Chilaquiles, we wanted green sauce but they said they only had red sauce. Totally disgusting. I think they just put a little tomato sauce on the chips, passed in the pan and were served. That was horrible. I ordered a Denver Omelette, the onion I think was neither lava nor peeled. I think it was egg with onion juice. Wow, disappointed. Because the service is very fast, the place is very cozy, but the menu should be improved. It definitely needs new administration.
