The Deer's Head, beyond it's status as an historic place, is just a wonderful place to have a superb meal. The menus are imaginative and seasonal, the ingredients sparklingly fresh, the preparation and presentation flawless, and the owners and staff members universally professional, personable, and helpful. We feel very fortunate to have this gem right here in Elizabethtown.

Everything is planned perfectly. The ingredients in the drinks come together to make an amazing cocktail. The foods are all fantastic with tons of local ingredients. My wife and I love supporting local and this is a fantastic restaurant to do that with. We will definitely come back.

Such a great find! Warm, welcoming, funky place with fantastic food. You could easily make a meal of the starters and boards but the burgers and rosemary fries are to die for too. Lots of options for vegetarians too. We'll be back!

Fabulous quaint Inn. Staff couldn't be nicer. The room is very clean and comfortable. The food is the best I had in the Adirondacks. Menu is very interesting with many great options. They were using me as a trail for pets to stay at the Inn. It worked out great!

What a great place to slow down and relax. Almost like being home. Best amenity - no T.V. in room, just a turntable, with some great vintage albums to select from and an extensive library. Very comfortable and quiet.

Always a very different and fresh menu. We've never had a bad meal yet

Impeccable Service…Lovely Ambiance… Smart Menu… Fantastic Drink Program. We came in for a birthday and couldn’t have been happier with the experience. Some highlights of the meal: The Woodsman Toast is to die for. Order two. The Black Linguini Special was exquisite. But the Duck Cassolet was def the star of the show. Worth every penny!!!

The best restaurants and bar with great creativity on the menu, cocktails, and mocktails!

My wife and I enjoyed drinks at the bar in the restaurant. The bartender was incredibly knowledgeable about the spirits and had excellent drink recommendations from her custom menu. Would definitely go there again when in the area.

This place is an absolute gem. An Inn you would find outside of NYC or even in the City. So clean and simple but with all the amenities. The downstairs tavern is chic and has a very inclusive menu. The owner Rob is very accessible and kind. The room I stayed in had a record player and I showered listening to bob dylan. Not sure where else you would get that perk for the price. I’d give this place lore than 5 stars if google allowed it. I’ve traveled a lot and often, I don’t stay in places with many hotel options. Deers Head Inn has set the bar very high for quiet ADK towns.

Absolutely the best place to stay and / or dine in E-town. The Deer's Head Inn is the Adirondack's best kept secret as locals don't know how amazing it is all around. We will Stat nowhere else when we visit family and friends.

Awesome dinner, we loved it so much we came back again the next night, and we weren't the only ones—saw a couple other repeat guests. They made me a custom cocktail to my specifications that was absolutely perfect, and the bread pudding was out of this world. Really stupendous meals, and the owner was great to chat with!

If you would like an eclectic and fun place to stop this is it! We enjoyed our overnight stay: perused the bookshelf and played a couple of old records. Four rooms have been remodeled over the restaurant, and ours was very comfortable. This 1808 inn has character!

My recent stay at the Deer's Head Inn was wonderful! The Inn is a very charming and historic building located in Elizabethtown, near the Adirondack high peaks. The room was very comfortable, clean, and affordable. The record player in the room was a unique touch that I really enjoyed! I definitely recommend a visit to the tavern as well. The food was tasty and the service was wonderful! I felt that the tavern's prices were reasonable. I appreciate that they receive a lot of their products from local farms and businesses, and partner with them to provide fresh, homemade dishes. The owner and all the staff members were extremely friendly and helpful! The pleasant atmosphere and welcoming staff really helped to make my stay enjoyable. I highly recommend the Deer's Head Inn and I am looking forward to planning another stay at the Inn in the future!

Super cute lodge, front door and room code texted to you morning of Check in, room 4 was a mix between a cottage and a dorm room, plenty of space, big bathroom and open windows for mountain air. Small plug in heater and AC if necessary. Across the street from a gas station/convenience store, and a supermarket.

Very delightful menu. Took parents for an anniversary. Nice selection of creative and delicious combinations for vegetarians as well as omnivores, great service, and a creative drink menu. We are on the porch and our dog was able to join us. Other guests also had pets on the porch. Wonderful hospitality!

We had an AMAZING evening celebrating a birthday! Food was superb, from appetizers & entrees to dessert! Our server was on point, from helping us order to keeping our drinks coming! We loved the atmosphere! We had never visited The Deer's Head before and it's a evening we won't soon forget!!

Came with four friends and we each enjoyed ourselves immensely. Incredible food for half the price you'd pay in Placid, with a good ambiance. (Note: we didn't try any of the house made drinks, but appreciated that they had Allagash on tap). The nachos were some of the best we'd ever had. The chips tasted homemade. Great fries, and great other apps. My trout was also cooked perfectly, with excellent pasta and veggie pairings. Definitely plan on coming back.

Yessss!! Go here!! Weary travelers found a heavenly stay here with a delicious restaurant and friendly atmosphere. If you have time come for longer, but if you are driving home and need a bed for the night.. Stop here.. Sooo much better than a road side hotel and now we want to return and stay longer.. Check out the area as well. Rooms are great.. Food is prepared with fine attention to detail catering to all dietery needs.. Yes even gluten free and vegan choices.. By and far though the thing that stands out the most is the warmth of the place. From that first phone call to inquire about a room to sitting in the restaurant to the exchanges between customers we witnessed... Bravo!! and thank you!! 😁❤️We will be back. Added bonus we woke to snow!!

Had a lovely meal at the Deer's Head Inn restaurant this past weekend. Delicious cocktails and appetizers. We enjoyed the tomato and burrata salad as well as the halibut special - both fantastic. Will definitely be back!

Best food and service I've found in the region. Good drinks, portions are ridiculously large and everything we had to eat was just the best version of itself. This restaurant is a boon to the Adirondacks and I hope they'll stay.

This was our first time visiting the Adirondacks from New York City. From the tasty burgers and homemade italian sausage to the fantastic service from check in to checkout me and my fiance had a wonderful time. Definitely worth the price and will definitely be returning. The staff suggested great activities and other restaurants around town and you could tell they love showcasing the best of the Adirondacks and Elizabeth town and it really enhanced our experience of our first time to upper New York. Thank you Deer’s Head Inn!

Nice quiet dining experience. We were first through the door for Mexican Night. Our server, Berlin, was thorough and professional, and the food generously portioned and excellent. The bar was clean and well tended by a snappily dressed bartender. Restrooms were spacious for those that may need the extra room, and clean.

This was my first time coming to Elizabethtown and I was here for business. The Deer's Head Inn was such a nice place to spend the night. The Inn is so cute and I absolutely love the book selection and the area to sit and read. The bed was comfortable and it was nice and quiet. Not like staying at large hotels with the constant noise of people walking up and down hallways and slamming doors. Rob also let me check out an hour later with no issues. That was very helpful as my meeting got rescheduled. If I come back to Elizabethtown, whether for business or pleasure, I will definitely stay here again. Thank you! Edit - I changed to 5 stars because my stay was fantastic. Now I know what days to stay so I can try the food :)

We are already talking about going back! We had the bloody gin drink, burratta salad, Caeser salad, beet salad, endive salad, sweet potato app, shepards pie, scallops, brisket ragu, burger, trio of nightly ice cream, and a pear crumble...all was amazing, ESPECIALLY the ragu!

J

I would definitely stay here again. Was very clean & cute. Linens were clean, shower was clean. Easy check in. Window AC! My only issues is that the mattress is rock hard- and I mean like a rock (room 5) I would highly highly highly recommend management change the mattress out to a medium firm type mattress that would suit the general public more . It basically felt like I was sleeping on the wood floor. But otherwise, everything was wonderful!

This joins the short places of great places in to eat the North Country. Refreshing to have professional waitstaff (not often seen up here) -- I was expecting more growing pains since this place opened fairly recently but there were none -- and it was a busy Saturday. Interesting menu with a nice range of choices and a local emphasis. An interesting beer list and what appeared to be a good wine list. There was a broad range of price points for the entrees and appetizers. Everyone at our table was quite happy with our dishes and there was much sharing and passing around. Portions much larger than expected.

One of the best dining experiences we have had in our many years of vacationing in the Adirondacks. There is very pleasant atmosphere. The Brussels sprouts were superb. I would definitely come back to try their smoked salmon and cured meats.

M

Food here is really well done. Even the least expensive meal was prepared nicely and with care. Wait staff is kind and friendly. Waitress topped of my water without asking me, nice touch. I think even the owner asked my how my meal was. Atmosphere is like an old homestead from the area. Very good experience.

Spent all weekend hiking the ADK and used this beautiful inn for sleeping and eating. The inn has rooms upstairs and a restaurant/bar downstairs. After hiking all day, it was amazing having a hot shower upstairs and then walk downstairs to wind down with delicious food and drinks without having to drive anywhere. Highly recommend the steak, burger, and mussels. Also recommend their cocktail New York Sour. The owners are local and know the area extremely well. I picked hiking trails based on their recommendations. They also recommended this outdoor store which is the best I’ve ever been to. The vibe of the inn is amazing. Everyone is always having a good time at the restaurant/bar. I made many new friends. I also ran into hikers that I met on the trail at the bar too. The rooms are spacious and have very comfy beds. Shower pressure is great. Grocery store is next door! In my opinion, the rooms are just as good as any hotel in the area - but having a restaurant/bar downstairs is the real charm. Thanks Aaron and Rob! Will be back in a few months.

We stayed and dined at the Deer’s Head Inn for three days. The inn had character and charm. Cozy bedding, clean rooms and conveniently right beside a tops and drug store. We enjoyed having our complimentary coffee on the patio in the morning. The Restaurant had delicious plates, great cocktails and wonderful, warm service. Also great size portions. The fries, pasta, and caramel apple bread pudding were the highlight! We had a blast on our trip and can’t wait to come back!

Stayed there last year on a road trip to Boston. I was upgraded to the library room, and had a fantastic stay. I loved the turntable, and had fun playing music. The restaurant downstairs also has fantastic locally-prepared food. It is also really close to the High Peaks for a quick hike. 15/10 recommend.

Just spent this past weekend - we were having a family reunion in Westport NY. The accomations were great; very comfortable bed and room was very comfortable. The staff was outstanding. Had a dinner at their restaurant Friday night (24 May) for 13 family members - the food was amazing and our waitress Samantha (Sam) did an amazing job and keep everyone in our group happy. I highly recommend her then next time you dine there. Great accomations, great food, outstanding staff. Can't ask for anything more.

A local staple. They always have sublime cocktails and dishes every season. The atmosphere strikes the perfect cozy yet night-out-on-the-town balance. Come as you are and you'll fit right in. It's easy to be a regular at such an excellent establishment!

The Deer's Head is a gem! My partner and I had two wonderful meals here a few weeks ago and I can't recommend it enough. Expertly made cocktails, outstanding food and service in a beautiful, welcoming ambiance. The summer crowd is a nice mix of locals and out-of-town visitors. Hands down the best dining experience we've had in the Adirondacks over the course of many years. As with other restaurants in the area, it's a good idea to check hours in advance and make a reservation. We haven't stayed at the inn but hope to in the future.

J

Cozy atmosphere and cute staffs! Old classic posters and Reno style. It’s much more than a restaurant and an inn for the residence in Elizabethtown,it seems like an history museum and the memories in common for the residence there. If you are planning to go to New York from Montreal and need to charge your electric car in the half way, this cute place is definitely a good choice to pass by while charging the car nearby EV 240kw charging station.

We are regulars at this amazing farm to table restaurant. It dawned on me I have not done a review. I have never had a meal where I said, “ it was ok” whenever we eat there, we are amazed at how delicious everything is. It’s a place you just want to sit & relax & enjoy each morsel you are served. It is actually the only place I have ever eaten alone-It was always out of my comfort zone, but soon realized after sitting at the bar that it no longer would be out of my comfort zone! Make a reservation as this place is 🔥tables fill up fast.

Awesome upgrades to a place I remember well from my youth. Everything was fantastic, including the service and ambiance. Update: Returned to stay at the inn after enjoying our meal on last year's visit. Lovely, modern, comfortable and quirky. Didn't realize the restaurant was closed both days we booked, but the self check-in was easy and convenient. Would definitely recommend! Another update: back for dinner a year later and wow. The menu is consistently stellar and interesting. Great drinks. Lovely staff. A real winner!

A hidden treasure! We stayed overnight in one of their dog friendly rooms. It was clean, spacious and decorated with love.. I am a huge music lover and appreciated the vinyl collection and record player. The check in process was super easy and the staff is so kind and friendly. If you visit don't miss the food. It is unbelievably delicious with something for everyone. Very high quality food and drink!!! We will absolutely be back.

Rooms were nice,.self check. Dinner and bar were superb, hence the 5 stats. The coffee machine on the second floor has inadequate instruction,.for example how to tell the machine you want decaf not regular, so it was easier to walk to Stewart s. Shame! Plus the coffee grinding weaks people up.

I'd spent a long day hiking and I was in search of something delicious to put some gas back in my tank. The Deer's Head Inn was a great choice. I had the house burger, medium add bacon, plus the garlic cheese fries. Just the thing to satisfy that deep hiker hunger. The Brussels sprouts were delicious as well. The special cocktail (I think it was called the Irish Goodbye) was tasty and well balanced. I was pleasantly surprised. A couple of draft beers were the perfect way to rehydrate and to round out an excellent meal. I would definitely eat here again, and they didn't say a word about our *casual* hiking attire

I had dinner with friends on the busiest day of the year...Eclipse. The place was packed, it was late, the server was poised, patient and accommodating. Stopped here for dinner on the way home. Food was fantastic; I like pulled pork so when I heard it was a special I had to get what turned out to be the most delicious pulled pork sandwich I’ve ever had, hands down. People were great too, efficient and very friendly. We’ll be back soon.

My partner and I had a wonderful stay at the Deer's Head Inn. The Inn is charming and quaint, and very clean and comfortable. Our room was nicely furnished and had everything we needed for our night's stay (mini fridge, clean bathroom, comfortable bed, etc.). The owner was extremely generous when I accidentally booked the wrong dates! They were kind and allowed us to stay the night we intended with no extra charge or hassle. Highly recommend this sweet place!

I don't know how this is listed as a 3 star hotel. They deserve so much more!! It was the easiest check in experience I have ever had, the rooms are lovely and clean. Everyone I spoke to throughout the booking process was super friendly and helpful! This hotel was such a find on our journey to the slopes! I would recommend this beautiful inn to anyone looking to have a nice relaxing weekend in a historical spot! Also I can't help but make a note of how exciting it was that this place was pet friendly!

My daughter and have come here a few times, we love it. Our waitress tonight lily was very nice and had a great smile always. As another patron was leaving he stopped by to say "Oh!! Such a wonderful stay! This place is a real gem- affordable, comfortable, cute! I booked this stay as a surprise birthday getaway for my husband and we both loved it. We really liked the in-room record player and all the books in our room (the library). And we appreciated the coffee station down the hall. Plus we had an absolutely fabulous dinner at the restaurant! We're looking forward to going back.

I’ve spent many a weekend in the ADK and I’m bummed I’m only just now discovering the Deer’s Head Inn! It’s perfectly located with easy access off 87 and quick to Keene and Lake Placid. The room was just what I needed, with lovely little details, and the restaurant had delicious food and drinks. I’ll definitely be back!

We had dinner there for New Year's Eve. I can't say enough how amazing the food and service was. I had duck and artichoke for appetizer (to die for). Husband had sea bass which was superb. And other couple had the filet mignon which was great. Everything was amazing. Great service as well.

We had a great stay here! The room was cozy and had everything we needed. It was in a convenient location not far from Lake Placid and very central in Elizabethtown being near a grocery store and convenience stores. It was very convenient being above the restaurant (the options were unique and flavorful and the cocktails were top tier). The owner was also very responsive. We would stay again.

Deer’s Head made us feel welcome from start to finish. Enough so we might consider relocating! The dining room is perfect in every way. Imagine the best food and great service without being pretentious. That’s it. Room was cozy and sweet and all we could need!!!

Owner is incredibly responsive, friendly and accommodating. This place has a lot of history and is very well located for a hike in the ADK (very close to New Russia trailhead for RPR). If you are looking for a fancy hotel with all the amenities, then go to the Crowne Plaza in Lake Placid, this is not the intent of this place. If you’re looking for a warm, cosy place where to stay in the heart of the High Peaks, then this place is for you.

We stayed the night en route from Quebec to NYC. Excellent food, fun cocktail, and really good friendly service in an historic building. Love the old photos and maps! The room was perfect for the three of us (queen bed and fold-out couch). Love the old vinyl and record player. Easy check in and out. VASTLY nicer and cheaper than the depressing chain place we stayed in on the way up. Recommend!

We stayed for one night at the Deer’s Head Inn and had a great experience! We received a key code via text before we got there, and we had everything we could have needed! The room was comfy and spacious, we loved using the record player, and the shampoo/conditioner/soap in the bathroom was so nice! Definitely would recommend for a little getaway. We didn’t have time to try the restaurant but it looked great!

Great stay! Sort of between an inn and a airbnb- no staff, self check in via code which was easy and convenient. Communal coffee and basic service items made it easy to do a quick meal from the grocery since we arrived late with nothing around open. Restaurant wasn’t open so we will need to come back and try it. Bed was comfortable and room was clean and charming. A bit sunny and loud but didn’t bother us!!

We spent one night here and only wish we had stayed longer! It's in a great location, being close to the ADK hikes we wanted and across the street from a Stewart's. The room we stayed in had books and records, and was nice and quiet. The bathroom had literally the fluffiest towels I've ever experienced. We also had dinner here and the food and cocktails were phenomenal. We'll definitely be back! Thank you for your hospitality!

We booked a room here on a whim while visiting family. Rooms are clean, bathroom and bathtub were spotless (grateful to be able to give my 1 year old a proper bath after a long day outside!). Easy check in process and inexpensive pricing for the area. Will be staying here again!

Absolutely amazing stay! Centrally located to where I needed to be for work, beautiful rooms, and amazing restaurant right down stairs. They have a really nice coffee machine in the hall upstairs for guests, and they were very accommodating. There was no where for me and my dad to stay on our business trip but these guys had a room that had a pullout couch so we were sold. So glad we stayed here. The food was amazing and unique. Highly recommend checking this place out even if it's just for dinner.

Nice old fashioned place. We got a code for the doors by text message. Had hard time figuring out how to lock the door. Coffee machine in the corridor was a lovely addition. There was a microwave and a fridge in our room number 5. And A/C unit in the window. There were books available to read or take. Nice wall lamps next to the bed. Tiny build in desk. They could use napkins or a couple of plates. There was an old-fashioned phone booth downstairs even though the kids didn't succeed in making it work.

K

Great for a quick one-night stop while passing through the area! There’s a lot of charm and character to the rooms. Great value for the price! It’s not the most luxurious; however, it’s charming and great for a casual stop.

I can only comment on the food. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is that the service was sloooow. I think they're understaffed, and while I can be understanding, it's not really my problem as a consumer - especially if they don't do anything to accommodate (like something on the table already, or quick attention to drinks, etc.). We tried the indian-inspired carrots, and I enjoyed them although my wife found them too chewy. The mussels were excellent. For dinner she had a burger with Kimchi, and was very good - the fries were excellent. I had the pork chop, and really really enjoyed that - probably the best single dish I had on this trip. I would probably go again if I thought they were staffed right.

We booked this place for the weekend trip and it was pretty good experience. When we just arrived, I was little upset because the room we've got was different from the one I thought I booked. I reserved a room on Booking and the photos of the room they have are little misleading. When I click on room photos, the website shows me the photos of their most beautiful room and photos of library. First of all it made me think that library is part of that room, but in reality these are two separate rooms. And second is that I didn't get any of those 2 rooms. My room was still pretty, I just didn't expect that I'll get something different from what I saw on the photos. I understand when it's a hotel, their rooms are pretty the same, but in the places like this each room is unique and I think it's very important for people to know which exact room they are booking. The restaurant is great with large food and drink selections. Cheese fries and chimichurri sauce were delicious! Overall it was a good stay.

R
Ryan Unser

A very well put together cocktail list, tried two and they were both great. Friendly service. Food not perfect. Had a piece of meat that was cooked a little more than it needed to be, and a salad dressing that was a little thin and bland, but overall a delicious meal (totally still ate 'em both). Comfortable vibe despite menu items skewing higher end.

We came for dinner when staying in Elizabethtown and had a great experience. We arrived with the early Friday crowd, so there was no wait and the dining room was quiet. There is also a ton of outside seating with a nice patio around back. A pool table too! Our server was wonderful. She was friendly, fun, and accommodating. Since it was slow, I went for their signature cocktail, which was on special for a cool seven bucks. Normally, I wouldn't expect much for a north country inn, but kudos to the bartender because it was excellent. Boozy, but well-mixed, and refreshing. If it were busier, I would have just stuck to beer. The menu is diverse without being too large, and it offers lots of vegetarian options. Everything we tasted was great, but I would especially recommend the brussel sprouts. The portion sizes are perfect and priced right. You can order a bunch of stuff and hang out and drink without feeling too full or leaving broke. This is key since after you get out of the woods, there is nothing else to do in Elizabethtown. If you got to the end of this review, you should already be at the Deer's Head Inn.

Found this place on a trip to the Lake Placid area. Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to find a Western Swing band warming up. They were incredible! Food prices are reasonable. The chef needs to find where the seasonings are kept in the kitchen. Everything was rather bland. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. All in all, a nice experience.

Our review of the Deer's Head Inn only pertains to our dining experience. We did not stay over night. First of all, we are glad to have the option to dine in this caliber of establishment in the northeast Adirondacks. The restaurant is very good. We visited on a Sunday night and were met with a full dining room on our arrival (it was the 4th of July week). We were immediately seated in the charming dining room. The noise level was higher than we expected, given the acoustic tiles on the ceiling. Our harried, sweaty, pony-tailed waiter neglected to share all the specials for the evening, which we overheard from servers taking care of nearby tables. I ordered the night's special appetizer, a strawberry salad, which was very short on the strawberries. We heard another diner at a nearby table rendering the same judgement on the salad; I only wished I heard her opinion earlier before we ordered. The rest of our meal was excellent. The service was slow and rather awkward, but that's the reality of the post-pandemic world. We will definitely consider returning.

Solidly good. Burger and fries cooked well. Refreshing hibiscus iced tea. Excellent wait staff. Only note is I wish the burger had more caramelized onions and more fixings on top.

This is a wonderful place. My husband and I spent a long weekend here. We dined at the restaurant each evening. It was such a treat to hike or read , rest, shower and then just head downstairs to an excellent restaurant. The food is locally sourced and there are items for every mood. The atmosphere is hip but not pretentious. There is an elegant billiards table that we enjoyed with an after dinner drink. Each of their guest rooms has it's own charm. The beds and linens are divine. Nice big fluffy white towels and natural bath products. We slept very well as did our dog(and she is a very tough customer)! There is a nice space for off-site work which my husband appreciated The Wi-Fi was very good throughout the inn. Thank you to the lovely staff (Kelly is especially awesome) for a delightful weekend.

We passed a very comfortable night at the Inn on our way to Quebec. The historic charm of the snow-covered, old building drew us in immediately. Check in was a breeze. Our host was incredibly accommodating, and we settled right in. We put a classic jazz album on the Bluetooth turntable in our room, and rested up before having an absolutely delicious meal in the restaurant downstairs. The cocktail list was inventive, and the delicious, seasonal menu was locally sourced and well-executed. Plus, the friendly staff were so helpful, and the meal so satisfying, we “bought a round for the kitchen” to show our appreciation. Slept well in our cozy beds and were off on our way in the morning. I would definitely recommend the Deer’s Head Inn for weary travelers and epicureans alike.

We didn't no what to expect as we were stopping there as a halfway point without any knowledge of the place whatsoever. We were so pleasantly surprised and had such a wonderful experience there. The room that we stayed in was delightful and the dinner on the porch at the restaurant was just wonderful. It was so good that we plan to go there again this year for an overnighter

Beautiful restaurant. Beautiful setting. Interesting and tasty food. Pricy...$160 (including tip) for 4 people....2 appetizers and 2 glasses of wine, and 1 soda. No dessert. Very friendly waitstaff, but they got something wrong on 2 out of out 4 orders (no cheese in the cheeseburger, even though she asked me twice). No vegetables as requested in one dish. It took is 15 minutes to get the 2 glasses of wine. Not really sure I'll go back.

Stumbled across this restaurant after visiting some nearby parks/trails. The restaurant had a good atmosphere and nice decor, however, on this particular visit, it took quite a long time to be seated, even though there only two small groups at the tables. It became obvious there was only one server on duty who was trying his best to attend to everyone. Food was pretty average in my opinion. Sadly didn't live up to its potential.

After a very long day of finalizing some business up locally, my beautiful fiancé wanted to take me out to eat. We were tired and very hungry and, if you've driven through Elizabethtown, you'll understand that there really aren't very many options. Anyway - we were close to the Deer's Head Inn and decided, based on the reviews we read, that this would be the spot for us. The establishment combines old world with new to create a more modern chic vibe - very Nouveau Adirondack. They have a lovely front porch which folks could dine on, and the indoor space is clean, bright and vibrant. The bar looked well stocked and they even have a beautiful pool table in the far back. This seemed to be 'the big' town bar (and frankly, probably one of two locations locally that HAVE a bar). We did not spend the night, so I cannot comment on the rooms. We ordered a cheese board, which was hands down the best part of the meal. It was outstanding. The Blueberry jam and Saint André combination with a little local honey - uh... killer. But sadly, that's where the meal deviated, and I can say, with much disappointment, that the remainder of our dinner was sub-par. My fiancé ordered a pasta dish with grilled chicken, which she said was very bland. A lottle dash of salt and she said it was improved tremendously. I ordered the New York Strip Steak and house fries with a Chimichurri sauce. The steak was cooked excellently, but I'm sorry for saying this, the chef was wrong on the cut - that was no New York Strip. The steak, though excellently cooked, had a tremendous amount of gristle, tendons and sinew. It was very difficult to cut and to chew and ultimately I had to do some serious 'surgery' to get at the meat, which ultimately I have to say, was very tasty. My guess is that the chef chose a Flat Iron Steak (also known as a Boneless Top Chuck Steak) as it had an inedible piece of silverskin/gristle that ran through the steak. The fries were also disappointing. Some were seasoned very well and had the perfect consistency, others were fried to death. The Chimichurri sauce was very nice. Our bill came to $110, which for steak and pasta, and no drinks, I felt, was a little steep. Ultimately, I don't think I'll be coming back here any time soon. For the price we paid for the food we received, we both agreed that it was too much buck for the bang. But the drinks look outstanding and so does the bar - so I'd recommend this place as a fun meet up spot for folks looking for a cocktail or locally brewed beer.

We usually take my mom here for her birthday and have no complaints. Unfortunately last time we went I ordered a crab pasta that literally had no discernible crab. There was a slight bit of flavorless shredded meat, but no enough to count. The pasta itself was overcooked and the dish was very expensive. I usually love this place but this dish was definitely not worth the price. Also the chefs were standing out back openly smoking which didn’t help the experience.

This review is for the restaurant, not the inn. Menu was great, they had a lot of interesting flavor combinations. The food, however, was bland. I got the Caesar Salad with chicken. It was supposed to have Parmesan cheese on it, it did not. The caper croutons could not be tasted at all. My partner got the fish with orzo. The orzo was all one flavor, onion. It overpowered the entire dish making the rest of it difficult to eat. Service wasn't great. Now, there was a very large party there. But with that said, they only had one waitress for the rest of the customers. We will not be returning.

My boyfriend and I just ate here this evening. I will preface by saying that the food and drinks that we got were very good. That being said, between the time we sat down to when we first got one of our appetizers was FIFTY minutes. One of the appetizers we literally mentioned we were waiting for (a meat board - literally no cooking involved) to two different servers in passing and received about an hour and a half into sitting there. We saw our server maybe a total of three times. We literally NEVER ordered our entrees after an hour and a half went by (never were even asked) and so we got the check and went to the Tops next door. I think we would still be there for another hour and a half if we had waited. On top of this, the table nearby us was angry because they had been waiting for their entrees for two hours and we listened as the host/owner/whoever was literally defensive about their food being so delayed. All you have to do is apologize and offer free appetizers or drinks. It’s truly shocking. Honestly I am still angry for the amount of money we were charged for being there for over and hour and a half for just appetizers. This is the first time in my life I have left somewhere early because the service was so slow. We definitely do not recommend going to dinner here unless they can get their act together or at least know what good customer service and an apology is.

After planning a weekend getaway a few weeks ago with friends, we chose to stay at the Deer's Head Inn. The reviews and pictures led me to believe that this was the place for us. 2 days prior to our stay, I reached out to the owner with regards to our 5 hout drive and a forecast of 16-20 inches of snow expected. The owner responded and told me that due to the less than 72 hours notice, he would have to charge us regardless if we stayed or not. This showed no regard for our safety. Upon arrival, we were given a code to enter the building and a code for each of our rooms as there is no one to assist with check in. Yes, the building is one of the oldest in the Adirondacks, and the history behind it is incredible, however, the rooms certainly needs some updating. The website description should disclose that the radiators don't always work depending on the downstairs restaurant temperature. Space heaters are provided in case this situation occurs which it did. It would have been nice to know that there were no tvs in the room. This wouldn't normally be an issue, but when you are snow bound it would have been a nice option. Many of the outlets did not work as well. We stayed in room #1. The shades did not go all the way down, the floor was slanted and my phone stuck to the night table. For the price we paid for the night (just under $200) I would have expected a bit more. We dined in the restaurant and found the staff to be exceptional and very friendly. The drinks were great. The food was very good but for the price, the portions were exceptionally small. It was very convenient to return upstairs due to the storm but the room was not conducive to being in a room by 9 with nothing to do. The walls of the rooms are exceptionally thin and you could hear any and all noises throughout the hallway. Our friend's room had an actual crack in the door which did not lend itself to quiet. Overall, I would not be quick to recommend this establishment. Had the owner been more receptive to our needs with a more positive attitude I may have upped my review to 3 stars, but unfortunately, this was not the case. *****IN RESPONSE TO OWNER'S COMMENTS REGARDING MY REVIEW*** A tv would be an added bonus when you are in an area with nothing to do at night. Your website does not say under amenities that you have TVs, but maybe disclose that you don't. You should also disclose that you don't offer heat unless one plugs it in themselves As for canceling, it was a question posed 48 hours in advance, and referring back to our texts, I did not have a negative attitude. The owner was polite in responding that that was not the forecast he was seeing, and I positively responded with see you this weekend Multiple rooms were not booked. It was a pair of rooms. Actually, 3 out of 6 rooms were vacant that night, so u can see your need to make some money regardless of how far someone needs to travel. Funny how the slanted floor is all that your response picked up on, leaving off all else that was mentioned My winter travels will be continue, but I will be sure that they have the overall needed necessities. Funny how the negative reviews are always met on a defensive rather than simply apologizing for how the customer feels. Maybe this is were the negative attitude comes in.

We ordered 3 1808 burgers ,2 of them were burnt 3rd one was cooked to order . I ordered the Steak Fritz($36) , was over 1/2 grizzle and inedible. This steak was one of the top 5 worst steaks I've ever had . Only reason I have it 2 stars was our waitress did a decent job . I do not recommend this place for any meal .

This is our 2nd time here, the first time the food was ok, but I had reservations as to trying it again. The service could have been better by letting us know the meat and cheese board contained goat cheese and dried bad meat, bahhhhhd! The smoked salmon was good. The pork and bean soup was undesirable! The bread and salad was good but one can't really mess that up! Will not eat there again.

I ordered food from the restaurant at Deers Head. I ordered the Smoky Crab Pasta. For $28 the portion was so small I was in shock. None of us could believe they would serve such a small portion. It was a joke, literally only a few bites of food. I will not be ordering food from there anymore.

There were no elevators, we have weak knees and had to walk up rickety stairs with our luggage. We had no disposable drink glasses, no coffee, no Kleenex, and NO T.V. The restaurant was very nice, but it’s down stairs, so all the talking, laughing, music, and the food smells were extremely annoying as we tried to sleep. I would not recommend this facility. When we asked why we did not have a television. We were told we could take a walk, read or listen to music.

The Deer’s Head Inn is, as its name implies.. dead. The revitalization of this building needs serious work; the amenities are nonexistent, the air conditioning was completely out in our room during our stay, and the food was misleading. The overall saving grace could have been the food, but if you’re going to make fancy descriptions and great sounding dishes on your menu, then please ensure they do in fact taste just as phenomenal. Do better, chef! The experience as a whole was beyond pitiful; the room was stifling and extremely uncomfortable (e.g., the bed was not great, and there was no closet). However, a lover of music will enjoy the record player in the room. The shower pressure was great, but watch out for scalding hot sections to surprise you, and obviously the historical value of visiting such a place for history buffs is appealing. Altogether, not a great experience, and this will, of course, be a one time stay. Sad, just sad. This place is giving Urban Rustic a run for its money! Oof
