The fish fry was Delicious loved the side salads very very pleased and service and associates were great haven't had a great fish fry like that in a long time 😀
Only giving a 5 to not mess up the ratings. Buff style was extremely overrated and would NEVER purchase again.
Great food, atmosphere and service. We ate at the bar and Natalie was engaging.
On a road trip, but such service, atmosphere and delicious food that we said "If we'd live in Buffalo, this would be our favorite place to come to!" Stop by any time! Warmly recommended!
Walked into Hoaks at 4pm on a Friday. Was told 25 minute wait, but after service at the bar, we only waited 15 minutes. Our waiter Matt, was spot on. Friendly, fast and very efficient. Didn't skip a beat. Our out of town guests were impressed with the fish frys, reasonable prices and outstanding views. Hoaks sure lives up to it fine reputation.
Even on a cold rainy day, we had a great time. Staff was friendly and food was very good. I can imagine on a hot and sunny day, this place would be mobbed
Had the fried yellow pike today. It was great! Chowder was awesome, too! This classic lakeshore restaurant offers great food and a nice view of the lake at prices that range from reasonable to high. The service and the food are well worth the cost. This evening, we ate outside. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The ambiance inside is louder and fun. If you're looking for a nice night out, Hoak's is for you!
Great food and good portions . Nice view summer or winter right on lake Erie.
Awesome place through and through! Great fish, cute girls with super great attitudes, and a wonderfully-polished theme to go along with the perfect lakeview! A little warning though! I can't speak for the women's room (since I'm a man), but the men's stall door is akin to a salloon swing-open door. No latches or anything! No indicator if it's occupied! Definitely anxiety-inducing.
I've always loved Hoaks. I remember going with my family as a kid and loving the fish fry and being on the lake. Nowadays, we don't get out that way all that often, but a recent stop in proved that Hoaks still has one of, if not the best fish fries around. Everything else ordered besides the fish was good too
Cool location. Historic and local-owned place with good fish fries
Beautiful views outside. We got there just before the lunch rush. Not thrilled with the beef on weck, but it's a wet bread thing for me. The fish sandwich was incredible.
Awesome experience! Order the onion rings if you like them. They bring you a whole plate of them ! Not just 5 or 6 onion pieces. I got the fish special (cod) and my husband got the walleye (I think). Both of our fish tasted wonderful. Light batter, fresh and I even loved their coleslaw. View of the lake was wonderful. It was the first time for me to see it frozen. Definitely will go back the next time we're up there.
Great view of Lake Erie. My family has been eating here since the late 60s and the food is consistently very good. Family tavern that sets an excellent table.
Usually come here every time I come in to town. If it was any more “on the lake” it would be IN the lake, so the view is amazing. Beef on Weck was excellent! See you next time!
After seeing some bad reviews we hesitated, but the couple other times we had been there were good so we went ahead. Hostess was very pleasant and when spot opened up outside she graciously moved us. Our waiter was attentive and very good. Food was great. I had fish sandwich with potato salad. Husband had Buffalo chicken sandwich with fries. Huge portions. Highly recommend.
The view, the fish fry, the music & family friendly ambiance- wow. We've lived in WNY for 11 years, this was our first time here and certainly won't be our last. Is it fine dining? No, but its a fabulous night on the water with delicious comfort / diner food.
My husband and I stopped for lunch and we were pleasantly surprised by just how much we enjoyed ourselves. My husband absolutely LOVED the French onion soup and burger that he had. And I enjoyed the fish fry I ordered. The staff was very friendly and the service was quick and the food was nice and hot and had good sized portions for the price. We will definitely be coming back!
A small wait (30-60 minutes), depending on if you wanted outdoor seating or inside. Waited @ bar & had a couple drinks. Bartenders were very nice! Once we were seated @ a booth inside (shorter wait), we had a short wait (very busy Sunday/Holiday weekend) & our waitress arrived took our ordered & wasvery polite, Paid attention to our special requests (no croutons on salad) & explained a few details about our order & repeated it back to us as she wrote it down (Always a good thing) We enjoyed our seafood & veggies & wine & were happy. But dessert...dont forget that! Turtle pie was huge (enough for 2) & Awesome. Considering everything we ordered, price was reasonable :) We will be back
I loved sitting right on the water .. made it feel as if your away in some distant place ....even though I live minutes away from the lake ..the service was good they had a young busser clearing away my plates soon as he seen them ...which was right away..the wait staff was polite attentive and the food was good...and came after the appetizer ...not at the same time which is annoying ...had a drink minutes after being seated
We went there for Tom and Jerry's. We ended up staying for much more. The bartenders engaged us in great conversation and we ended up staying longer than we planned simlly because of them!
Went to Hoak‘s for a friends birthday party and though we were a large group, they were very timely with service once we actually sat down. Food and drink orders came up quick! I ordered their insanely sized buffalo chicken sandwich which was delicious and the chicken was soooo tender. It came with fries were fine. I also ordered a long island ice tea, which was good as well. Overall everyone seemed to enjoy their meals and the staff were very friendly and nice. We did have views of the water, but it was a little too cool to set outside for dining.
Hoak's has been a Hamburg favorite for generations. The place to go for consistently good, pub style food, cold beer and friendly atmosphere. They also offer the best view of the sunset on Lake Erie!!
Hoak’s Lakeshore is one of those places that instantly feels like a Buffalo experience, not just a meal. The wings? Insanely good—crispy, saucy, perfectly cooked, and honestly way better than the wings from the so-called “claimed original.” If you’re coming to Western NY and want to know what real Buffalo wings taste like, this is the stop. What really seals it, though, is the vibe. Hoak’s is fantastic for tourists because it’s right on the water, open year-round, and always buzzing with energy. The staff is genuinely wonderful—friendly, fast, and clearly proud of the place—and the locals are half the entertainment. Expect great conversations, plenty of laughs, and that classic Buffalo/Southtowns charm you can’t fake. Come hungry, stay longer than you planned, and don’t skip the wings. P.S. Parking is super easy—a free, large attached lot. Right off the main road.
Hoak’s was such a cool place to visit right on Lake Erie. I had the chicken dinner and a bowl of their French onion soup. The soup was pretty good, a little too much pepper. The chicken was meh. Their blue cheese is homemade and very good. There aren’t really any healthy options at this restaurant. The service was pretty good. Sat right away and got our food right away. It was cool seeing all the photos on the walls of the history of the restaurant.
The Buffalo chicken sandwich is massive and delicious. I get 2 meals from it. They always have specials so check them out. I had the special prime rib sandwich. It was so tender and tasty. The view is awesome from the oatio.
We only went for beers and sides. Their potato salad is one of the best we've ever had. Original recipe from the 1930s. Fries were great. The waterfront views can't be beat whether you dine inside or out. We saw the fish platters others were ordering and they were huge, hanging over the plates!
The famous fish was a little more deep fry than fish, but good. The potato salad and coleslaw were great. Worth the wait. Next time, we will be here after 18:00. Crowed seemed to die down after that, a bit on a Tuesday night. Beautiful view and perfect evening on the lake. Once I sat, service was quick and painless. Definitely recommend if you're in the area. Great for couples. I'm bringing the wife back. $37.00 Fish dinner, 2 beers and tax. 👍🏻
I loved this stop! Dan was so cool, and a local couple chatted us up about the area. They actually recommended a nice place (Wilson Boat House) near Lake Ontario, along our route, and it was great, too! We stopped here to touch Lake Erie, and it's right on the water. The food was very good with 4 happy eaters in the group. Dan recommended the Hamburg Lakeview Lager based on my tastes, and it was spot on!
Service was fantastic today can’t wait for Hoak’s Summer Views! But there was a lady bartender and she told me her name (I forgot )but she was amazing. I mentioned to her I like outside and she had no waitresses but still helped me get the service I didn’t even ask for. She was sweet and very conversational. She made me feel comfortable and even made sure my food was cooked how I like it and assisted to make sure it was. She will keep the customers around! Oh.. the food and the view was also fabulous as always, but this review goes to show you, people make the place. Just my experience today before the food made me happy to return. Thank you!
We drove from Rochester just to have lunch here. It is so worth the drive. Chris and Natalie are amazing!! We had so much fun with them. The food was wonderful!! So fresh and the portions are huge. My husband had the original Buffalo chicken sandwich and could not even finish half of it. The potato salad is delicious. Can't wait to take another road trip to there again!!
Great local spot with a lot of historical value. Huge patio and a great view of the lake. The building has been a Hamburg landmark for ages and over the past few years has seen some great upgrades. The feeling here is casual and friendly and they offer a lot of classic casual bar food along with seafood options. Lots of great drink and beer options too which makes it a perfect spot for dinner or grabbing a few drinks. I came recently for lunch and had the roast beef on weck and the julienne salad. The beef was a very large portion, tender and cooked to perfection. The salad was also huge and had a generous amount of toppings. I got a great seat on the patio and enjoyed the wonderful view and service. During covid I can see the staff has worked hard to make guests feel safe. The staff is wearing masks, cleaning often and they offer social distancing guidelines inside and outside.
What a classic timeless place! Food was wonderful, best fish fry I’ve had in a very long time. Fish quality was excellent. The waitress was so sweet and efficient. Everyone there seemed to have a story from the old days of coming and it was so nice to hear that. Including my mother :). We didn’t get a chance to sit outside but we sat by the window the views were so relaxing and wonderful. Can’t wait to take my children here one day and continue the summer tradition.

I've gone a few times this summer and it's always good. Love the new bar and outside area. The food and the view are great.
Excellent service and location. Menu full of great options, food was excellent. Very friend environment.

We went to Hoak's for a casual dinner on their outdoor patio. We have been to Hoak's before, but not for several years. We had fish fries, which were delicious. We will definitely return.
Lovely little waterfront restaurant! Food was pretty good, not amazing. Really nice spot to watch the sunset.
Exceptional pub environment. Good food, very good service. On the Lake Erie shore.
Pretty basic review. I've always had good service here and the food is very consistent. It's not the kind of place that you're going to be bragging about your meal to people but you are always going to get a well-made meal at a reasonable price with a good atmosphere.
Definitely a amazing chicken sandwich extremely big for the price , service was slow but thats due to covid witch is now the norm guys , my biggest complaint is the roll , I would consider changing it to a Costanzo's roll for sure other then that very happy the French onion soup was a 6 out of 10
Large serving of fish that’s great for one hungry person or easy to split for two. It was nice and crispy. Coleslaw and potato salad was super tasty. Fries were hot and crispy too. We went on a super windy day, but I suspect it would have been a really nice view of the lake since it’s right on the water.
On our way to the "other" place we passed Hoak's and decided it had more of the atmosphere we sought. We waited happily at the patio bar for our table. Cold, tasty drinks served up by Dan, the bartender, helped pass the time. Once seated we were graciously and charmingly looked after by Rebecca. Our drinks were refreshed to our liking and our food was fresh, hot and delicious. A Ruben sandwich for my wife and a bacon cheeseburger for me. The coleslaw was a bit bland, however the fries were amazing. The bill was more than fair. Made the drive well worth it.
Fish was fantastic. Hubby enjoyed his clam chowder. Might have the best rye bread ever.

Got stuffed mushrooms because I was told it was a seafood stuffing but when I got them they didn't look, smell or taste anything like seafood......tasted more like taco meat. If you order the roast beef with gravy on bread I recommend getting the gravy on the side. The wife got a seafood plate and was disappointed that the seafood had very little seafood taste meaning it was probably frozen and old.
This was my first time eating in a restaurant, we were outside on the patio socially distanced well, and although outside was great, we had to walk through a people-crowded small space. This side end burger was great and I think it's mostly because of this amazing bun! The views from outside are nice too.
I had been to this place years ago many times. Went again for the first time in quite a long time and was rather disappointed. The fish was soooo salty and lemony. Hard to eat. We were there a bit late in the day and you could tell. Waitresses were so over it. We waited a very long time for someone to even acknowledge us. Worst of all... The hostess gave you that "your bothering me feeling". That's the first impression of a restaurant, I'm sorry but when your not greeted with a pleasant person it puts a bad taste in your mouth right away.
This is the second year in a row I have tried to have a Birthday with 10 people here i understand there are no reservations but I did call in advance a couple days both times to ensure I could do this Both times I was told that they do not do reservations but it should not be a problem Last year was over an hour wait and we had children that were getting antsy so we left This year I show up and get told "yeah I dont think we can accommodate that today especially with how busy we are" I had 10 people waiting in their cars and we were prepared to wait a little while Apparently the money we were going to spend was not needed as they were busy enough It is really disappointing as I have heard the food is great here And apparently they do not need anymore business so I will be taking my business elsewhere there are too many other options I am frustrated because this happened not once but twice And bringing 10 people and having to tell them I am sorry we can't get in!!!! I am also a business owner so I understand the pains of growing but I am sorry this was not handled very well
We drove an hour to have the Guinness fish fry, and found that it's rare when the offer it. We saw it on line, that's why we went. But we stayed and had their regular fish fry which was good. No soggy bottoms. It wasn't beer battered, but fried with ,I believe ,bread crumbs. The sides were good. Choice of potato, Cole slaw, tartar sauce, which was really good. The waiter we had was kind informative and friendly. We never had to wait for coffee. Our food came out quickly and hot. Our problems were...it was very busy and we went at 8pm, to beat a Friday dinner crowd. We were seated at a small table between the door outside to patio, the bar, and the wait staff station. Crazy! I was bumped into by staff and customers our whole stay. One waiter, literally bumped into me every time he walked by. We counted eight times, once we began counting. So I had to watch before I took a sip of coffee. Try not to get seated there. It's very loud, so don't expect to have a conversation with anyone. The bathrooms were clean, considering how busy it was, but very small. Even with two stalls, two people couldn't walk in this tiny room. All in all it was a good visit, but probably won't return.
Haven't been to Hoaks in a long time was excited to go. Had to wait to eat outside so we stayed in better because I only saw one table with an umbrella it was hot sunny and just a little wind. We ordered Onion rings that were very greasy my daughter squeezed the 1st one and grease come out of it I ate 2 and had enough to greasy the onion on the inside was nice but no thank you. My daughter has chicken wings mild they were saucey she thought they weren't mild but they were she liked them nice crunch but could have given something to put the bones in the thing they were in was to small for it all I seen somebody next to us putting the bones on his wife's plate! I had a fish sandwich that looked on other reviews to be really large! Not mine had to scrape some of the coating of the fish alot of extra breading wasn't very much fish under it the roll was nice and the coleslaw was just ok but not bad. I wasn't satisfied after I was so excited to eat there didn't even want to have a drink at the outside bar wasn't talking any chances being disappointed again I might come back before summers over and try something else
I had the fish fry. Food was okay but just wasn't seasoned properly. The restaurant atmosphere is okay it has a nice view of the lake.
Haven’t been to Hoak’s in years… 8 of us! We sat on patio under awning/ view of the lake was beautiful. We all really liked the appetizers. I ordered the fried perch dinner, & a cup Of New England clam chowder, as did my cousin. Well; we never had “ clam chowder “ like what was served! It was so thick, looked like a “dip”, and appeared to be cream of broccoli soup with tiny bits of clams- the taste was very strange. We let our server know; she was great. Hopefully the chef will see this & improve the recipe!

Very disappointed with our meal. Services incredibly slow. When we got our fish it was not cooked properly. Waited over 45 minutes to get in. Best part of the meal was the baked potato. Will not return after years of dining there!
Not normally a reviewer like this, but the prime spot on the water and it's wasted potential drove me mad. First... is it not possible to build a dock or two for boats? Second... don't use the side where the customers walk intoto the building from parking as storage for moldy buckets, grease traps, and the smoke pit for employers. Got our soup and salad almost instantly, waited well over an hour before asking where the rest of our food was. Then surprise it came 10 minutes later, so was clearly forgotten. How can you pride yourselves on fish fry and serve tubs of Ken's tartar sauce and not just make a house sauce? Food itself was just ok. The fish was undercooked... the pork was just ok, the fries were old. Watched multiple customers try to sit in empty tables on the patio only to be told to move and see the table left empty for an hr while they still boasted a 1hr+ wait? Also... not a good look to have 4-5 staff behind the bar and see many of them doing shots with what are clearly the regulars that have allowed enough revenue to become complacent in your pursuit of a successful business. Again, as I said... not really a picky person. In fact I ha e the pallette of an 8yr old boy so it's hard to leave me unsatisfied. But just seems like so much wasted potential.
Adequate food poor service. Arrived on a blustery early afternoon, on arrival we asked the woman who greeted us to sit in the bar area for some nice views. We were told we could sit there but couldn’t have any food menus from the restaurant because we had to order from the bar. My partner the went to ask for menus from the bartender, who apparently had no idea what she was saying. He eventually and begrudgingly handed over two menus that were exactly the same as those the woman said we couldn’t have any of…. I go up to order in my best BBC English accent, still couldn’t be understood - ended up with clam chowder that came out immediately then half an hour later a burger and the side of fries we had ordered at the same time. Clam chowder was fine, the ‘famous steak end sandwich’ was unseasoned, overcooked and missing the cheese I had ordered and double checked. Hung around at the bar waiting to pay whilst being ignored. Finally went to the service section to pay. Disappointing, unfriendly and a bizarre experience.
Came on a Monday afternoon. The place was so loud you couldn't hear yourself think. The fish fry that used to be so good was barely edible. It was mostly just fried batter. Will not come back again.
Hometown Buffalonians returned for a wedding after a half dozen years away. Many food attractions were on our list (Polish Village, Bar Bill, Ted’s, Chef’s, Illio DiPallos, Blasdell Pizza, Anchor Bar, etc.) and none of them disappointed but one—Hoak’s in Hamburg. The fish fry meals were mushy, tasteless and not near what it was in the past. Sides were pretty much the same. Would never return opting rather for the Matthew Glab VFW Post on Fridays. For a little over $100 for three, we were very disappointed.
Didn’t think the food was worth the price. Could have went somewhere else a spend a 115$ and gotten way better but we said we would try it. Shrimp and scallops were over done. Potato and the potato salad were good. Kids cheeseburger was like an adult’s size and was kids high. Services was average but if it was 115$ I expect it to be better than average. Atmosphere feels you just going to a bar. That needs updating.
Great view, fast, courteous service. Those two things were enough to earn the two stars. For me the food was quite disappointing. My wife ordered the grilled chicken on salad salad. She said the chicken tasted well overdone to the point of almost being wood. The rest of the salad was disappointing for her. For me I had the clam chowder which is extraordinarily lumpy and tasted closer to and had a texture of tapioca than actual soup. I ordered one of their famous fish fries. It was definitely not to my taste(this obviously is highly subjective.) I found the fish too. Watery and fishy. The tartar sauce was terrible and Tasted like institutional canned and was definitely not homemade. I chose not to waste coleslaw cuz it would just be thrown out anyways. So I just received a regular proportion of fries and no second of anything. I must say the sunsets. There are spectacular and it was worth just going there just to see the sun's setting but definitely not to eat the food.

We waited over an hour and half after being told 45 minutes. There were no lights on the patio so we had to move inside after ordering food because once the sun went down, spiders dropped onto our table. Waitress brought out the wrong drinks, never checked for refills, forgot the soups/salads and I had to ask for them when she brought out the main course, which then had the incorrect sides. At that point, I was done but it got even worse when we bit into our food, no flavor and everything was over cooked. I usually give places a second chance but I’m not thinking I will here. Side note: I would’ve given zero stars but the hostess was great and way more assertive than the wait staff. Apologized for the delay and even made sure we were all set once we had to move inside.
I love Hoak's. It's my favorite local restaurant even though I don't get out much. The best time is in the summer if you are lucky enough to get a table on the deck. The is always fantastic. And the service? Most excellent. Love it there. Update to my previously positive reviews: Hoaks used to be one of my favorite places to eat. I have eaten there many times both singularly and with friends. I am an elderly woman who only goes out to eat once in a blue moon because I can't afford more. Today I went back to eat alone and was refused service because I came solo. I have eaten solo for years both on the deck and inside. Also at the bar and the table. I guess rules change because today I was told they no longer seat singles. I don't think this new rule will hurt their bottom line. They do a rocking business but I will never be back and will never recommend them to anyone else.
Stopped in yesterday for corned beef and cabbage. It was the worst corned beef I've ever had. It was fatty tough when it was served. It was ice cold sent it back to be reheated. Came back like shoe leather also had their famous fish fry. There was more breading than fish. I couldn't even taste the fish The only good thing about the fish fry was the potato salad
The bartender was so rude to so many at the bar that others warned us. They were right he ignored us for about 8-10 minutes then took our order he made a terrific drink though so we waited for our table one with a view. There were two other couples behind us one for outside and the other for inside like us. Yep you guessed it they sat them before us and gave us a table by the restrooms. I told them it wasn’t what I asked for and wasn’t going to sit there but would gladly take the center table we don’t like booths. The lady with the short brown hair said that it was taken by someone that just walked in. So we walked out! We went down the street to Rodney’s they were so pleasant and let us have the table we wanted the food was delicious and large enough for leftovers.
At first I thought my cocktail with top shelf tequila was watered down till I saw how little I was charged for the drink, $4.50. Next time if i ever go there, I will just ask for a double. Okay my future mother in law and I both had stomach issues from two seperate fish menu items. My fiance got the chicken salad. My broiled pike was not cooked long enough as I learned after the 3 sprints to the latrine. The skin was not hard the fish itself was very soggy. I never had broiled pike before and will never again order it from Hoak's. My gf's mom was far worse off. She actually didnt make it to the bathroom. Thankfully she doesnt own a pc or a smartphone so she won't know I posted this. Please retrain your cooks on how long and how high the internal temp has to be cooked for fish in all preparations. Very scary stuff. Please email me if needed.
Walking into this restaurant last Saturday night and seeing one small group of people in the entire restaurant and the rest of the tables empty, should have been a warning. The food was simply not fit for consumption, wish I didnt need to be so harsh but "Bar Rescue" needs to visit this business and save them as there are so many other problems I dont wish to mention as it will come across like i am complaining. I actually feel sorry for the staff as they are all walking around unaware how bad the experience really is. I would highly recommend avoiding this restaurant until they make some serious changes.
