The service at Soto was phenomenal. From Chef Yoshi, Chef Andy, Sam the bartender, Leslie our waitress, the front house made sure we were comfortable and treated like old friends. Of course they were very skilled and knowledgeable about each plate and drink served. We had the Premium Omakase to get the full experience. It was a delight that sitting at the sushi bar we spontaneously met old friends and were able to share drinks. We had the Den sake. Each presentation was beautiful and delicious! I’ll be sure to come back and invite more friends! It was a night to remember. Thanks Soto team!
An excellent dining experience. You will be greeted into a sleek dining environment. The soft low lighting helps to accentuate the enjoyment of the experience. It's refreshing to read a Japanese menu with uniquely different offerings. The food is creatively and artfully plated. Each bite is like an orgasm in your mouth!! While this dining experience isn't inexpensive, it is definitely worth trying.
Soto is, without question, a standout in the Houston sushi scene. From the moment we walked in, the service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The staff clearly takes pride in what they do—every recommendation felt thoughtful and every detail was handled with care. As for the food? Absolutely phenomenal. Every bite—from the freshest sashimi to the beautifully crafted specialty rolls—was a work of art. You can tell the chefs are both skilled and passionate. Soto doesn’t just serve sushi; they elevate it. Whether you’re a longtime sushi lover or just dipping your toe into the world of nigiri, Soto is a must-visit. Incredible service. Unforgettable food. We’ll be back soon.
First time here. Loved it. Waiter, Alec, was knowledgeable, friendly, and very helpful. The Ora king salmon, Japanese uni , soft shell crab and Chilean sea bass, Soto 2.0 roll , and extra fatty tuna nigiri (cheek or collar which isn’t commonly served) were all absolutely excellent. All sushi is already dressed (perfectly) and does not need soy or wasabi added. What I love about Soto is that their menu is full of new creative touches that elevate the flavor profile to new levels not found elsewhere. This is a sushi “foodie’s “ paradise. The fried matcha panna cotta was delicious with a smooth but firm texture and not too sweet.
I was visiting Houston from Orlando with some friends and decided to try out Soto on our first night. Our trip started not so well since our flight got delayed but going to SOTO changed everything around. The food was AMAZING. Our waiter Alec had great recommendations! It was hard to pick from all the great tasting food but the salmon toro was my favorite. It had a surprisingly great explosion of flavors that took my mouth for a ride. SOO GOOD. Even the chef Moto come to our table and made sure we were having a great time and enjoying the food. The service, food, drinks, environment, lighting, even valet parking was all top notch. The mixologist accommodated our drink taste which made our cocktails taste even better. I want to point out the music was really good too. It was like a melodic soft upbeat kind of vibe. Overall a GREAT experience. I highly recommend.
Really enjoyed the dinner experience at the sushi bar. We went there for Xmas Eve dinner and it did not disappoint. Yoshi-San and Andy-San and the rest of the crew were all so much fun and so hospitable. Creative menu and unique dishes. Highly recommend the uni pasta and the toro risotto and to try most of the specials. One of the best sushi I’ve had in town but the amazing service is one reason why I’ll definitely come back.
Celebrated my wife and I's one year wedding anniversary here, happy to say we were extremely satisfied by the experience! Food: 5/5 all the nigiri and appetizers were amazingly fresh and tasty, I don't know if it's because I haven't had sushi in almost a year but this hit the spot. We got the premium omakase ($250 /person) and IMO totally worth the price tag! Chef Andy and team were all super nice and attentive, get a seat at the sushi bar if you can you won't be disappointed Service: 5/5 never had an empty water glass or sake cup, servers were all knowledgeable and attentive, definitely top class service! Ambiance: 5/5 you wouldn't know how classy this place was by looking at the surrounding area, but the decor is high class! I can see us being regulars here, thank you all for a great meal!
Delicious food, excellent service. Our waiter gave us perfect recommendations after asking about our preferences. And I know you're supposed to eat slow and savor every bite but we were hungry lol and the food kept coming out as soon as we were finishing our last plate. Perfect ambience for date night or GNO! Everything we had was amazing, but the stand out was the chili Hamachi. Will come back for omakase!
Awesome services from our waiter, Timmy and the manager, Jennifer. They were both very accommodating and helpful with guiding us on what to order as it was our first time there. The restaurant was clean with an amazing decor. Love the bar area. The sushi was fresh and delicious. It was a unique and pleasant experience. We will try the Omakase next time for sure!
We have been to Soto twice now and this is by far, is our favorite sushi restaurant when we want a little fancier date night out. Sashimi/nigiri is SO fresh and buttery. I highly recommend the Omakase; we've tried both the regular and premium sets, and you can't go wrong with either. You will definitely get surprisingly full by the end of the meal. The chocolate Fois Gras nigiri may sound interesting, but it is a must try - perfect matrimony of flavor :o Also, shout out to Dillon!!! He is always a delight to see and customer service is 5/5 stars. He is the absolute best.
We had a date night/ early New Year’s dinner Saturday night. We came 10 min before our reservation of 6pm and were seated right away. 5:30-6 or so is HH so win! I had the tuna tacos and hamachi crudo. Both were delicious and so good! We did the omakase. Everything was delicious, all the sauces were amazing, sushi chefs were amazing, and service was great! I can’t wait to come back again. We also had Earth & Honey Cocktail and old fashion! Amazing!
Quite literally the BEST restaurant I’ve ever eaten at in my life!!! The sushi quality was incredible, the presentation was amazing, the flavor profiles and combinations were immaculate, the chef was superb and so friendly, the waiter was also so kind, and so was the manager!! We went on a Monday night for my birthday dinner and wound up being the last table in the restaurant and chatted with all of the staff while we were eating our meal. We had an absolute blast outside of just eating the best food I’ve ever had. We had ordered the standard Omakase for $150 pp. It was the most amazing dining experience of my life. I will be dreaming about this meal. I also had a phenomenal craft sake pairing with my meal. The dishes were unlike any fish and garnish pairing. The toro was so delectable, it literally melted in my mouth. Every bite I took I found myself more and more amazing. Chef also made us the uni toast which I couldn’t believe the flavor was so sweet and delicious. If you don’t go to this restaurant you are doing yourself a disservice!!!
My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary here and had a wonderful time. The food was delicious and unique. We did their Omakase which allowed us to try a variety of different courses. Our server was very knowledgable and attentive, she chose excellent dishes for us to try. We will definitely return!
This cozy restaurant has left me the best impression. Hospitable host, friendly staff, delicious dishes. The service is unmatched. The staff truly cares about your experience. Chef Yoshi and Jennifer are attentive and supper nice. Food is absolutely amazing. I enjoy every single bite. However, The price is a bit steep compared with the other sushi places. If you want a special night out and are willing to pay a litte more for your amazing dishes, high quality fresh sushi this is the great place to go.
Hands down my favorite sushi restaurant in Texas. Each time I visit I'm astounded by the amazing hospitality. Chefs Andy, Andy, Jason, & Moto-San & everyone else on the team make you feel so welcome! If you lend your trust to them, whether it's omakase or just menu recommendations - you will not be disappointed! Every single dish we've had here has been a hit. A few of my personal highlights include: Kasugodai (whole fish) (Insanely beautiful and careful preparation, delicate sashimi with a bonus fried surprise at the end- this is an experience!) Engawa Nigiri (Melt in your mouth buttery deliciousness) Chu-toro, O-toro, & Kama-toro 😋 (The holy trinity) & Salmon Over Fire (This is a fun one! Great for a first timer!)
Tasty lunch! Have been here previously a few times for omakase dinner (amazing btw) but have been wanting to try lunch, specifically the tuna rice bowl (maguro don). Maguro Don was great, with lots of different types of tuna. Also ordered a Kaiseki bento box, which had a large variety of items. Both entrees included a salad and miso soup. Servers were very friendly and attentive. I didn't see valet for lunchtime parking, so it looks like it's free during the daytime, though I ended up parking on the street nearby just in case. Overall, great lunch spot for yummy sushi!
Apologies as I forgot to take photos except for that glorious melon. We hit up Soto kiddo's early birthday and everything was EXCELLENT. We ordered a bunch of rolls, a few pieces of sashimi, and a few random dishes that were recommendations from our wonderful server. There was not one item that was even a little bit imperfect. I cannot wait to go back!
Really incredible place in Houston for traditional style Sushi with a slightly creative twist. To be honest I still love the simple flavor of just a cut of fish on rice but the extra flavors were interesting and exciting to try. The inside of Soto is dimly lit which is one my favorite vibes for a restaurant and the interior design is rather minimal but fancy. Servers as well as Sushi chefs are thoughtful and fun.
We had an incredible experience and are so glad we found this place for our girls weekend. We have one vegetarian in our group and the vegetarian menu was fantastic with lots of variety. Highly recommend the chili tofu and Brussels sprouts as well as the Wagyu gyoza for apps! If you haven’t had Omakase before then you should definitely do it here. This is my third omakase experience and definitely my favorite so far. The fish is so fresh and the courses and presentation are unique, interesting and elegant. Phillip was our waiter and his knowledge of the menu is outstanding and service was perfect. We would have never guessed he just started there! Shout out to our chefs, you are sushi masters! All the praise goes to you and the rest of the kitchen. We will be back and recommend you to anyone for a fantastic experience.
Some of the best Omakase I’ve had in Houston. The seafood is fresh and the dishes imaginative. I brought my daughter, and she got full from edamame so she didn’t eat much of her risotto. Andy is the best. He thought she didn’t like the food and made her an egg soufflé. He didn’t have too since she was full, but he did just in case. Service is impeccable. Can’t wait to come back the next time I’m in town.
Easily the best sushi I’ve ever had. It’s been very rare that I taste something that activates olfactory links. I had two orders of the Chef’s 5 Piece. While each Nigiri was unique, the Shima Aji stood out to me - the flavor evoked a vision of being in the tropics, palm trees overhead and sun beating down. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Phillip was absolutely on point as a bartender/server. Super polite, attentive, knowledgeable on every dish and drink, and a lot of fun to talk to. I look forward to coming back to Houston and visiting this place again
Dined at the sushi bar for date night early evening, 7pm. Reservation was easy to make for that time. Valet parking right when you pull in. They valet for tips. Restaurant was about 2/3rds full. Our server Alex was very professional and guided us through the menu. Making several awesome recommendations after asking about our taste and preferences. Cocktail and mocktail were great. All of the dishes were prepared beautifully. A nice presentation and description of each plate. With some having directions in how to eat them for the best flavor. We left full and very satisfied. Highly recommend Soto for date night, family dinner or amazing sashimi and a cocktail. We will be back and with more friends.
From the moment you step in, the ambiance sets the tone—modern, sleek, and inviting. The service is outstanding, with attentive staff who make you feel like a VIP from start to finish. But it’s the food that truly shines. Soto offers a fusion of traditional Japanese flavors with contemporary flair. The sushi is incredibly fresh, with delicate pieces that practically melt in your mouth. The menu offers a wide variety of options, from raw to cooked, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Pair your meal with a cocktail or a glass of wine from their curated selection, and you’re in for a treat. Whether you’re a sushi connoisseur or a newcomer, Soto Houston offers an unforgettable dining experience that combines fantastic flavors, stellar service, and a sophisticated atmosphere. Highly recommended!
Wow. This restaurant is remarkable. I have tried most if not all sushi restaurants in the Houston area and this is one of the best ones by far. Our server, Jesus, was attentive and knowledgeable. Food was amazing, chefs were amazing, drinks were amazing, I cannot wait to be back! Please go give it a try!
Long overdue review for Chef Andy and his staff! Soto is that spot. The sushi’s top-tier, the vibe is sleek but not trying too hard, and Chef Andy knows exactly what he’s doing. Every dish is clean, flavorful, and hits like it should. Pair it with their top shelf Sake and you’re set for an evening to paint the town red. 😍 We always order the Foie Gras & Uni topped with truffle…🤤 Their lunch special is amazing and you’ll probably get a bang for your visit. It’s great quality fish selects (even Madai) — comes with soup and salad. If you’re doing omakase, just sit back and let the man work—he delivers. Bring someone you actually like.. lol the place is quite intimate!
Once again, the crew at Soto lives up to expectations. Chef Andy and his staff were amazing. We brought a newbie with us, and she was probably treated better than both of us regulars! Sitting at the sushi bar is probably the best move, and ordering omakase is a must. We were amazed with every course, despite being here several times.
I celebrated my birthday at Soto Sushi and the experience was exactly what I hoped for. Our waiter, Tommy, was phenomenal. He gave excellent recommendations, knew the menu well, and was genuinely attentive without ever hovering. His suggestions were spot on and he made the entire experience feel intentional and celebratory, not rushed or transactional. The manager, Analise, was incredibly kind and welcoming. She checked in with warmth and made sure everything was running smoothly, which added to the overall comfort of the evening. Great food, thoughtful service, and an atmosphere that actually feels special. An easy choice for celebrations or a quality night out.
Our second time here! I actually chose this restaurant for my birthday!! And we got the same server we had our first time, Jesus. Jesus remembered us and we remembered him and the freebie he gave us at the end of our first meal, the “potato chip”. I ordered for the table with our server’s input. He’s very knowledgeable and gave great suggestions. The white salmon nigiri was the most memorable dish, but everything was spectacular, with an honorable mention for the “potato chip”. Great birthday or special occasion restaurant as they deliver a quality experience in a trendy space.
Every item was outstanding—flavorful, fresh, and delicately seasoned to let the quality of the fish shine. The hamachi toro nigiri was rich and buttery, the masu nigiri was clean and well-balanced, and the botan ebi nigiri was exceptional. The addition of the prawn’s head alongside the ebi added a beautiful visual flair and highlighted the care put into presentation. Everything was delicious from start to finish.
I just returned from a 2 week trip to Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto), and had amazing food and SOTO restaurant is superior and definitely competes with the mother land as dishes on menu is TOP KNOTCH! Preparation, quality, taste, service is the BEST in Houston and all of Texas (& Ohio where I’m from). Definitely treat yourself to this awesome restaurant for the best sushi, and dpmeasextry the Truffle Risito, OMG mouthwatering
We drove over an hour today for my birthday, quietly praying the food would be worth it. It didn’t just meet expectations. It exceeded them in every possible way. Soto delivers an omakase experience that is thoughtful, precise, and deeply respectful of ingredients. From the first bite, it was clear this is a kitchen that understands balance, restraint, and intention. Our server, Eric, was exceptionally well-versed. His knowledge of each course elevated the experience. Nothing felt rushed or rehearsed. Every explanation felt informed and sincere. The opening dish set the tone immediately. An oyster crowned with toro, caviar, and salmon roe. Briny, buttery, clean, and indulgent all at once. Pure harmony. I remember thinking, this is heaven. Eighteen courses later, I was still thinking the same thing. What made the evening even more special was meeting the chef. He took the time to personally greet me for my birthday. That level of presence and hospitality speaks volumes. It turned an already extraordinary meal into a genuinely memorable experience. Each course unfolded with intention. Impeccable temperature control. Knife work that showed confidence rather than flash. The sake pairing was elegant and beautifully aligned with the progression of dishes. I’ve dined at Japanese restaurants across the U.S., Asia, and Latin America. With that perspective, I can say confidently that Soto’s quality is exquisitely top tier. This is not just good for Houston. This stands among the best. Even more impressive, the experience felt welcoming and warm. My five-year-old loved it. My husband loved it even more. I have videos more than photos. Soto isn’t just a meal. It’s a journey. One worth the drive. One worthy of celebration. And one I’ll be thinking about for a very long time. 🍶🍣✨
The food was exquisite! My sister and I went to Soto today for lunch and Chef Andy did not disappoint. The sushi was fresh and full of bursts of flavor. We also enjoy our very first oyster shooter. I can assure you we’ll be returning sooner than they think. All of the staff was extremely friendly and efficient.
Soto is the best sushi in Houston. We’ve been coming regularly for years because the quality is amazing. Daily HH from 5-6:30 has great deals (and they’ve got a good lunch menu too). Chef owner Andy is so much fun and we love sitting at the sushi bar interacting with the team. We’ve brought friends or sent friends here and everyone has always loved it.
I've been coming here for years now. It's a must go to when I'm in Houston for work. The wait staff is extremely knowledgeable about a very varied menu that changes often. I really enjoy the straight from Japan specialty menu they have. I always make a point to sample off it every time I'm at Soto. The go to favorite of mine is always the Uni Shooters, such a wonderful mix of textures and tastes. In a city full of great sushi restaurants this place is very unique.
I have been really blown away by my last several experiences at Soto! In particular the happy hour options are an incredible value- high quality sushi at a great price. The chef's choice 5 piece nigiri can't be beat (and pro tip, the fish continues to change if you keep ordering). The service has been great, just the right amount of attention and explanation. Cool and classy vibe overall.
Absolutely amazing sushi restaurant! Everything here is super tasty, freshly prepared and beautifully presented. The service is exceptional with lots of good recommendations. The drinks were phenomenal! Lots of good cocktails and Japanese whiskeys/ cocktails. All the specials we tried were great. A must visit place when you’re in the area.
Review for Soto Soto is one of the best dining spots in Houston. Everything tastes incredibly fresh, and the quality of the ingredients is unmatched. You can tell a lot of care goes into every dish. They also have the best happy hour in the city without sacrificing quality. The service is top notch—attentive, knowledgeable, and welcoming. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!
Came here for omakase on Valentine’s Day. The fish quality was impressive — fresh, clean flavors, and nicely executed cuts. The progression of courses felt well thought out, and the presentation added to the overall experience. The restaurant was understandably packed due to the holiday, so service timing was a bit slower than usual. However, the staff handled the crowd professionally, and the food quality remained consistent throughout. A great spot for special occasions. I’d love to return on a regular evening to enjoy a more relaxed pace.
Dined in at Soto for our two year anniversary and was welcomed with the warmest staff and amazing food. Our server, Alex, was the best! It was our first time trying Omakase and he was very patient and informative. Alex went above and beyond to make sure our time at Soto was unforgettable. He explained and presented each course perfectly. Chef Andy also stopped by our table and was the cherry on top to our entire experience. He really knows how to make you feel right at home inside of the restaurant. This will definitely be our favorite sushi spot moving forward, the quality cannot be beat!
Our first time here and everything was excellent. Our waiter Tommy had great suggestions for fish, most of which tried. We didn't get to meet Chef Andy, but he graciously offered us some of their really good sake on the house. A few of our favorites came off the Toyosu selection- blackthroat seaperch, channel rockfish, and the giant clam mantle with truffle. Drinks were well made, and dessert was so good, we decided to get two dishes to end our night. Overall, the staff made the experience amazing, would definitely recommend this place if you want high quality sushi.
Good was amazing, service was better. Ask for Tommy he’s the best! Will definitely come again thank you to all the staff and chefs! Thank you to the main chef that came out and took a shot with us!
Erik was so informative and really knew the menu gave great recommendations. Sophie also very knowledgeable and the sweetest. Definitely will be back for the service and the food!
Had an amazing time here. Hubby and I tried to get a variety of fish from their different menu options. We visit a new sushi spot every week, and this definitely makes Top 3. Still thinking about that Chu Toro. Our server Jesus was the best! Will definitely go back asap.
We came to Soto hours after our court marriage to celebrate with the Omakase experience. Chef Andy and his team made our evening feel so special. The food and the service was AMAZING. Special thanks to Chef Andy and Joseph for such an amazing experience. Will definitely be coming back again and again!
We came here for my brothers birthday. The service was fantastic. The main chef came out and took a shot with us. The gave us many items on the house. Just an all around great experience. Thanks to our waiter, Tommy.
First omakase and we couldn’t have asked for more. The upgrade is worth it. Everything was unbelievable!! Our Chef Andy and server Ethan made it unforgettable. Honestly one of the best meals I’ve ever had. The sushi was fresh and everything was unique. Will be back soon.
I came in last night for the first time with my husband and Sam was our waitress. We did the omakase which I highly recommend. It was 18 very well done courses that had us full by the end. Sam as well as every staff that we had the pleasure of interacting with was amazing! She was attentive and so sweet. I will definitely be coming back in. Thank you to Chef Andy and the entire team.
Easily the best sushi in Houston! We’ve explored many places, and the imported fish from Japan here is unbelievably fresh. The prices are very reasonable, especially considering the quality. We ordered several items from the menu, and our waitress recommended the nigiri. We tried the toro nigiri, and we were so glad we did—absolutely the best we’ve ever had. The chefs specialize in nigiri, and it shows! The ambiance is contemporary with a sleek, modern Japanese style. The staff was professional, friendly, and made the experience even better. Loved it! Can’t wait to go back.
Soto remains our go-to destination for impeccably fresh, high-quality Japanese fish. Andre was exceptional—welcoming us warmly even close to closing time and thoughtfully arranging seating at the sushi bar. His recommendations were flawless; in particular, the masu ocean trout stood out—luxuriously fatty, delicate, and truly melting in the mouth.
Alex was our server and he recommended us nigiris that we weren't familiar with and all tasted amazing! He was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable about each ingredient that came with the dishes. Would definitely come back and request for Alex to be our server :)
Some of the best sushi I’ve ever had, and I am really picky. Very nice ambience and wonderful recommendations by our server, Toan. The Soto 2.0 roll was absolutely amazing. Can’t wait to go back for the homemade mango mochi, it sounded so good! Thank you Victoria for all of the great info on the menu! Looking forward to returning the next time I am in Houston.
Best meal I have had in Houston in a long time. The Truffle Risotto was out of this world. Fish was amazing and fresh. Ken was a kind and effective server and the ambiance excellent. I cannot wait to come back
I don’t usually make Google recommendations but this place is absolutely amazing. Chef Andy is truly gifted and amazing at his culinary skills and abilitiy to plate such amazing and flavorful dishes. Our server Andre was so attentive and every single recommendation he gave us was spot on and very good. We have been to Uchi and Aiko many times but guys this is the new #1 for sushi. Period
Soto was the first fancy sushi restaurant we came to together, and in the many times we've been since they've never disappointed. To notch service, delicious food, and great value. 10/10 recommend!
Sam was so attentive and kind, making sure we tried the best dishes! We sat at the bar, Andre was super polite and helped us pick the best drinks! We are so grateful and extremely satisfied. Definitely recommend the torched toro truffle, house made potato chip, the happy hour 5pc nigiri, and the Japanese old fashioned and the shiso lychee margarita!!!!
If you love sushi, this is your spot. My partner and I come here almost every weekend, and we always get treated like royalty. Chef Andy is the best—passionate, talented, and so attentive to detail. The servers remember your name and treat you with real kindness. The manager Annalise always checks in with genuine care, making sure everything feels perfect. My favorite people are Erik, Toan, and Jesus!
Absolutely phenomenal evening here! Service was impeccable, Toan was amazing, food was exceptional. The omakase flight is expensive but completely worth it, could not recommend this place more. Will definitely be back!
We are sushi lovers and this one has now become our favorite. The sushi is sooo fresh each one melted in your mouth. The sauces and garnish are flavorful and unique in their combination and pair well with the sushi they use them with. If you love salmon, they have 3 types of salmon which were fantastic. The cold noodle shooter was very different and excellent. They were very happy to switch out the uni with caviar. Analise, the hostess was gracious and hospitable and Joseph our server was very helpful in making food choices. The restaurant wasn’t too loud so you can have a conversation and did not leave with a pounding headache!!! Overall a wonderful and positive experience. We will be returning often.
My sister and I were celebrating our birthday at Soto, which we have done for a few years. In our many years of going here, Andre C. was one of the best servers we have had. He was very attentive, gave great recommendations, could recall menu items with very little description, and served us a great complimentary dessert. We were very impressed with his service, the additional servers, and the food. I can’t wait to come back again!
We had the absolute best experience tonight thanks to Ethan, our server at Soto Sushi. He was truly incredible—hands down one of the best servers I’ve had in a long time. Ethan was so personable, attentive, and genuinely fun to be around. He made sure we were always taken care of and even chimed in on our conversations in the best way, which we really appreciated and loved. It’s servers like Ethan that elevate a great meal into an unforgettable experience. 10/10 across the board—he’s a total standout and a huge reason we’ll be back.
Alex was amazing. His recommendations were all phenomenal and he knew exactly what to bring to the table for us. His energy was top tier through out our entire dinner! Definitely will be returning thanks to him and the amazing food! Next level freshness!
My husband and I came for our 10th year wedding anniversary and the service and food was amazing. Lily was our server and she took amazing care of us. We really enjoyed the chili hamachi which was our favorite. The nigiri was amazing as well and so flavorful. We would definitely recommend Soto to all our friends and would return ourselves.
Great experience. Our server Alex was awesome. Celebrated a late valentines here and this is our new favorite omakase place. Great value for pricing, left full, and will be back again.
We got the omakase experience & 10/10 1000% recommend. Toan was so knowledgeable on every item that he brought out. Everyone was super friendly & the chef was very engaging even though it was a busy night. Will be back (:
I’ve been to Soto countless times over the last few years. Every visit is such a treat! During tonight’s visit, Annalise, the general manager came to our table and was so kind to us and really made sure that our experience at Soto was great. She also went above and beyond to accommodate my food allergies. She made sure that valet brought our car out before we went outside and brought an attention to detail that was really special. The owner was also so generous and helpful with my allergies. I’m going to Japan soon and he gave me so much information about sushi and fish in Japan that I should order. Soto has the best quality fish, amazing hospitality that goes above and beyond, and I keep coming back for the incredible dishes like tuna truffle risotto. I love supporting Soto and want everyone to know about it!
I’ve been wanting to check out this location having been a regular at the Austin location over 12 years ago. There’s something stale about the atmosphere in this one, maybe because it was so empty but also maybe because one of the servers gave a mechanical obligatory description of the lunch bento. Why do you even bother if you don’t wanna do it? The best parts of the bento were the marinated the sashimi mini plates. Everything else was okay. Soup was watered down but salad was quite tasty. The sushi scene is competitive and I’m not sure how they’ll do in the long run but I may return for dinner with my husband and kids. Their prices are reasonable but perhaps in the end, we’re getting what we’re paying for.
Good service and then sushi here is very good with some unique flavors. The special with pineapple was amazing. The pork ribs were really good and would recommend. The salmon over fire is worth the show one time but not really worth the price. Great cocktails. Valet is good and only tip based. We had to order hot tea to warm up as it was absolutely freezing in there and constant air blowing on you which wasn't pleasant.
First time here for the Valentine’s Day dinner, not the experience I would expect from a restaurant at this level. Made the reservation but still waited 20 minutes to be seated. Everyone was standing by the door, waiting their names to be called. For a moment I thought I’m at IHOP. The food is definitely amazing and delicious, but I feel like they try to fit too many tables in the restaurant (not sure if it’s because of the Valentine’s Day), making the place like a market or food court. Tables are so close to each other that you can hear every conversation around you. More over, there’s this cooking stone dish on the Valentine’s Day menu, the whole place is so smokey as if you were in a Korean BBQ place (except Korean BBQ has ventilation).
My husband and I dined here for the Valentine's 10-course omakase ($150/pp), which took 2 hours. The experience was...ok at best. We were seated right next to a support beam, which felt cramped. The kitchen was struggling to handle the workload, and the dishes came to our table out of order. There was also a couple that got seated at the table next to us 45min after we had sat, but somehow they ended up receiving their dishes two at a time and lapped us in courses, eventually finishing their meal at the same time as us. They had received their wagyu stone plate before us, even though we had already been waiting 20min for ours! And it turned out our stone plate wasn't even hot enough and didnt do the a5 justice. Outside at the valet stand, one of the valets had apparently lost a guest's keys. I wasnt able to stay long enough to see the drama play out, but overall, it was a very disorganized experience. There's plenty of other omakase places in Houston at this price range
We went to Soto on Valentine's Day for their 10 course omakase. The food was great for the most part but the atmosphere and service were not. Everything was extremely rushed. Courses were coming out one after the other. The waitress would barely have time to explain one before the next came out. Then they would hover until we were done and they would take the plate away too fast, once before I was even finished eating. We also found what was VERY obviously a hair on one of the nigiri pieces and were told that it was "a bone." It was quickly wiped off the plate and dismissed. No manager came to speak to us or even acknowledge it. The atmosphere was super weird as well and we were all sat right on top of one another. Overall, I do not honestly know if I would go back. We spent a lot of money to be there for less than an hour and to be dismissed when we raised concerns. Not super impressed.
My husband and I visited Soto on a Sunday evening, but the service was incredibly slow. I could understand if it was extremely busy, but it wasn’t. When we arrived, four people were already dining, and only nine more came after us. So, it wasn’t even remotely busy for the size of the staff. We ordered two drinks, three appetizers, two chef’s choice nigiri sets, and a risotto. It took them 40 minutes for our sushi and an hour for our last dish. The waiting time between dishes was so painfully long. The food was delicious, but we won’t be returning anytime soon because of the slow service.
We found a HUGE piece of EGG SHELL in the sea urchin noodle and they did NOTHING about it. Literally nothing about it! The waiter simply took away the egg shell with his bare hand and pretended nothing happened. We didn’t want to make a big scene of it, so we kept our mouth shut. I WILL NOT come back and I DO NOT RECOMMEND this restaurant to anyone.
Incoming guests: Houston has many high-end Japanese restaurants. Please avoid this one by all means. It tosses away loyal customers like dispensable human cash producer. I experienced SNOBBISH, COLD-HEARTED, DISCRIMINATORY treatment from Soto. I used to be a routine happy hour guest at Soto (been there for at least two dozens times, knowing all the staff and their names, having developed genuine friendliness with the bartenders and manager). Until last Sunday, the manager followed me outside after I finished my meal, and told me that I was banned from the restaurant. The reason she offers is that their boss believes my spending amount is too low. I was dumbfounded. I have never met or spoken to this boss, who is no doubt too self-important to ban a low-margin guest. A repeat customer is rejected because the spending ($30-40 each time at happy hour) isn't aligned with the store's expectation. Can you believe that? Btw, the restaurant never elaborates any minimum spending amount. Most of the time it has fewer than 3 guests, and maybe a few more during holiday seasons. As a graduate student with a modest income, I'm not ashamed of only going to the happy hour. Apparently Soto doesn't care about losing a low-margin guest, so why would it cares about a bad review. The quality of food is inconsistent. Sometimes the toro tastes fishy, or sometimes the sashimi is overshadowed by odd sauces, a random combination of Lee Kum Kee and Sashikomi. Most of the dishes are random fusions from Chinese, Japanese, Italian cuisines. Perhaps the intention is to stand out and be creative, yet the result is subpar at best. I would like to shout out to the bartenders Dennis and Andre and manager Annalise, whose service is the reason that keeps me coming back, not the food or the snotty boss. Unfortunately the service of the staff is not likely to be appreciated by their boss. Leave sooner before being tossed away like garbage! There are better places to be in Houston.
Came to Soto expecting a quality omakase experience and left feeling like our time and money were completely wasted. From the moment we arrived, the host told us we would not be allowed to stay longer than 1.5 hours — which immediately set a rushed and uncomfortable tone for what’s supposed to be an enjoyable, premium dining experience. Once the omakase started, things only got worse. The service was extremely slow, with long waits between courses, yet somehow we were still made to feel pressured by the time limit. To make matters worse, our waiter barely checked on us and didn’t bother to follow up on drink refills. Overall, the experience felt disorganized, inattentive, and not worth the price. Definitely not what you expect from an omakase — just a disappointing night and wasted time and money.
We went for the Valentine’s Day omakase experience and unfortunately left still hungry. The courses were served as shareable plates rather than individually plated, which felt unexpected for an omakase. We were also surprised to be cooking our own A5 wagyu on stones that were not hot enough and unable to get a decent sear. We anticipated a true “trust the chef” experience. Dessert was simply a slice of melon, with no additional creativity or presentation. Overall, the price did not reflect the level of quality or experience we were expecting.
Honestly, I would have given this place 5 stars after having really nice meals there, but the Valentine’s Day “Omakase experience” was just a complete let down as it was our anniversary too. Every dish was shared and outrageously expensive for what it was, the icing on the cake (spoiler alert, there was no cake), the dessert was literally just one slice of melon for the two of us to share. Took forever to get every course out and they were so behind that the courses didn’t even come out as planned. They forgot my fiancée’s dietary restriction and overall just didn’t have any really positive vibe or the whole experience. Almost everything was way too spicy and just not very inventive. When I said something to what seemed like the manager about it being pretty disappointing, they brought out a piece of cheesecake. Will definitely not being going back after a $400+ bill for the two of us (without alcohol even being drank).
