We ate at "The Pass" half of this establishment and had a very nice experience with the five-course tasting menu. The food was very good, and service was good, though a little fast. We would definitely go back if we had the opportunity.
The food is excellent at the pass. It is a set course menu with optional wine pairings. Couples celebrating an occasion or people trying to impress a date as it is on the more expensive side, nonetheless appropriate for the gustatory experience offered.
Went to the Pass. It was just outstanding. I appreciate that they don't just offer the standard dishes, they stretch your palette. There were some dishes that I didn't expect to work and was pleasantly surprised (white chocolate and olive? crab foam?) and some that I didn't think did work at all (miso apple soup with some weird tomato foam?). Still, you'll be blown away by the food. They mixed it up with more comfort options as well (amazing lobster rolls, delicious chicharrones). Unlike Oxheart, I came away from here STUFFED. The eight course meal is pricey, but it's worth it. It's also worth mentioning that the front-of-house here was stellar. The service was amazing, the sommelier was very helpful and informative, and everyone was super nice. I look forward to trying Provisions, and going back to the Pass to try another seasonal menu.
Both The Pass & Provisions are excellent restaurants I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. The Pass is expensive, but if you're looking to wow your SO you will not be disappointed. Provisions has some of the best slow-cooked meat around and is much more affordable.
I had a small wedding ceremony and reception here last year and the staff really helped to make it a great evening. The event's manager Angela and staff helped us every step of the way. Food was great of course. 10/10 would get married here again!
Its a great restaurant! I love the style, setting, and general mood of the Pass. The staff is incredibly polite and knowledgeable. Yes their food has been better at times compared to others but it is always great. Great ambiance.
January 8, 2012- The day Gravitas closed and the day I thought I would never walk into the building at 807 Taft again. April 5, 2014- The day that I was proven wrong. Gravitas was one of my favorite restaurants. It was sad to see it go but last month, I realized that it was replaced with something better. The Pass & Provisions has a interesting set up. Half of the restaurant, Provisions, is more casual and consists of a conventional menu with a variety of awesome foods. The Pass, on the other hand, has a set course. The Pass is hidden behind a door that does not open on a hinge, but extends horizontally towards you. Behind the awesome door is a square room that is furnished beautifully with a black and white vibe. The open kitchen in the back provided a wonderful ambience. The visuals of the restaurant radiated uptight but the open restaurant and happy waiters and waitresses gave the restaurant a warm and open feel even amongst the white table cloths. The Pass has one set course menu that is either 5 or 8 courses depending on whether you want to spend just an arm or a leg as well. Although the menus are very expensive, the food and experience is worth it. Not only is it excitingly prepared and wonderful tasting but the waiters are attentive but not overpowering. I never had to go out of my way to flag down a waiter but at the same time I didn't feel as though they were breathing down my neck. I do not drink alcohol so I am unable to judge the wine pairings, however, I am fairly confident in my ability to judge food. As you would expect with a tasting menu, the portions were small. However, after 8 courses, I was full (and I do have a fairly large appetite). The evening opened with an asparagus puree topped with a ham and cheese wrapped asparagus and a few encouraging words from the waitress: Don't worry, you can use your fingers. So there I was, all dressed up and I dipped what looks like a rolled sandwich into a green soup! And the night just kept getting more exciting. Langoustine was presented on a bed heart of palms and avocados. Yakitori rested on a bed of house-made bologna. The smoked trout rested in a sea of Hibiscus soup. The fois gras came in Chinese steam buns. And the Beef short rib came with more types of onions than I've had vegetables. With each new item, I was blown away by the chef's creativity. After the "main courses", the dessert portion of the tasting menu began. I love dessert. You don't understand... I often order two desserts for myself! But oh my goodness, I did not know what I was in for. The menu simply said "Pea & carrots". I was not expecting a Pea and carrot cake wrapped in dark chocolate and lavender white chocolates. It was easily the weirdest food, which is saying something considering the things I've tried (raw horse meat and stingray to name a couple). Although it was weird, I am glad I tried it and it was a fun experience. The cake was followed by ricotta and mushroom cap ice cream. That was awesome!!! The last course of the night was their "petit fours". Don't let the name fool you, you are allowed to order as many as you want. The waiter came around with a cart covered in an assortment of chocolate and little sweets. The cart had macaroons, caramel, chocolate dipped marshmallows, chocolate, lollypops, etc. All of them were housemade and they all tasted out of this world! Finally after a long evening (this dinner will take multiple hours), we ordered the bill, the waitress asked if we would like her to tell the valet to pull our car up. It really is the small things that make a restaurant phenomenal. The Pass definitely was one of the best restaurants I have been to.
This is one of the best restaurants in Houston hands down, the chefs and the staff are extremely talented and of course the food reflects their passion. The cresta de gallo pasta, and the potato pizza are a couple of highlights but everything on the menu is delicious. If you're looking for a very special night reserve a table at The Pass, where you will enjoy some of the most inventive cuisine in town.
Best food experience ever. I had a much longer, more detailed review but apparently there's a short word limit, sorry guys...Through the secret wall door we sat right next to the kitchen, deer-in-the-headlights-ing through a glass window at every dish prepared with a symphonic, Michelin-esk cast, like a pretentious ‘chef’s table’ episode, eagerly awaiting our tasting menu. As my wife so eloquently phrased it, the best part of a tasting menu is two fold: it’s easier since you don't have to make choices and it puts you in the hands of a professional who certainly knows better than us how flavors profile together and this forces you to try things you may have never tried when you can simply fall back on comforts. I loved the start. An Asian influenced chips and guac. Asian themes prevailed throughout the dinner, as it is up and coming, and I couldn't have been happier. Tapioca flour, harissa and lime zest topped basically chicharrones. By themselves, wow. But with avocado mousse, a skin of black sesame and nori, it looks like a real avocado. And a blob of sour cream in place of the seed. Also salmon roe and pickled red onions. Actually the roe was surprisingly perfect with the chicharron. And cilantro micro greens; they nailed it down to the finest detail! Hard to forget this starter. The next corse was halibut for me and burrata for my wife. The halibut, which, like all the corses, I got to see them make, was sous vide, so of course it was perfectly cooked with a Cajun spice to it ('crawfish'). The thing that stood out here was the buttermilk foam and pea purée. That's what sets top of the line restaurants apart from ordinary ones. The sauces! Every meal has a few perfect ones, texturally and with a flavor profile that pulls the whole dish together and makes it pop, visually too. My wife's burrata was nearly the same aside from the cheese for meat sub, which honestly was taster imho. I would say our evening culminated in the next dish, an early peak, and slowly faded from here, because it was always impossible to beat what awaited...For my wife, a pasta that blew our minds (fagottini: basically a ravioli) with rich, smooth flavors of earthiness with another out of this world mushroom, the chanterelle, and a marjoram pesto (oregano with pine/citrus undertones). My pasta, tagliatelle, somewhere in between pappardelle and fettuccine, was just as rich and decadent too. The uni (sea urchin) was the first time I loved it, because I sure didn't like it raw at uchi. It's just an umami, oceany flavor, but it shined in this dish vs on its own. It was presented like a poached egg on top that should be popped, drained and mixed with the miso and nori. But there was a spicy undertone to it all that I couldn't place, something that was sharp but lingered only a bit, so not a quick wasabi, nor a strong, lasting chili. I got my answer from the waiter who asked the chef. Turns out they cooked the pasta in water flavored with basil and Aleppo pepper! Aleppo is one of my favorites because it packs more punch than a black peppercorn but isn't too strong, it's like white pepper. Next was the wagyu dish. More surprises! Loved the upright broccoli stem filled with bordelaise (red wine, butter, shallots). The beef cheek was texturally like a risotto ball, but maybe the most flavorful thing on the plate. The wagyu was mediocre, but to me everything blossomed with a shocking sauce: broccoli purée! Somehow it all tasted better with it. And the palette cleanser was so cool! A grape juice filled chocolate ball! Loved that pop of sweetness, cold and acidity to press the reset button and transition to dessert...a vanilla panna cotta topped with pineapple and lime zest, on the half-shell of a coconut, on a sandy bed of sugar. I suggest taking a spoonful and dipping a bit in the sugar as it's not a very sweet dish, if you crave a sweet dessert, or not! And the absinthe cart service was an immersive history lesson and unforgettable illuminating experience, a microcosm of our whole dinner! Easily the best restaurant in Houston!
Delicious! I went there for lunch. The service was great from beginning to end, and the food.... (closing my eyes and inhaling deeply...) it was amazing, the explosion of flavors was just incredible, I tried several dishes, my absolutely favorites were the cresta di galo (pasta) and the snapper, truly amazing. Highly recommended!
My husband and I went here for our anniversary and had the tasting menu. It was a wonderful experience, from the first course to the last. The ingredients are fresh and unique, and we greatly enjoyed our meal. Service was fantastic.
I spent a wonderful evening at Prevision’s side of this establishment, tonight with my family. The staff was warm and helpful. The unique decor was relaxing and lead to a feeling of belonging. But that fact that the restaurant menu provided something that pleased three generations from 7-6 0 says so much. Good food does not have to be served in a delicate environment.
An excellent meal. As the others have said, it is indeed expensive but the creativity and quality match the price. I opted for the 8 course tasting menu (regular) and it was great. The lamb dish will blow you away and the uni dish will drop you to your knees. What's cool about this place other than the decor/atmosphere/great service is that they have a vegan menu. My wife is vegan and we thought we would have to request special dishes just for her but when sitting down and being presented the menu, they flat out said we have a regular tasting menu and a vegan one. That's awesome and I give The Pass great props for this. Have a vegetarian menu/dishes is the norm nowadays and all places should have some options for vegetarians...to take it a step forward and have a vegan one that is also gluten free? Awesome! Good for them for being proactive and keeping with the times/trends. I tried most of them too and they were freakin' good! Just as good as my dishes, especially the mushroom chowder. That was the hit of the night! How do they get the essence of mushroom in a broth like that?? Anyways...go here for those special nights, you won't be disappointed! On a different note, four out of the six people in our party got the pairings (one wine pairing and three beer/liquor pairings) and they thought they were a little mismatched. The liquor pairings especially as they thought they were way to strong and overpowered the dish they were accompanied with. I can't say since I didn't try any but I did have two "mocktails" and these were fantastic. Very very creative drinks. I give the bartenders as much props as the chefs as they have some pretty darn creative drinks here too.
Fun Dinner Place. The food is very unique and delicious. My favorite items were the asparagus soup, roasted shishito peppers, and sea bass. The wine list is also great. I would recommend this for a fun date spot.
Wonderful experience. Some dishes seemed to be trying a little bit too hard but you come here for innovation - and they certainly deliver! Throughly enjoyed trying each dish. This is an extremely unique atmosphere for Houston and is executed extremely well.
We've eaten at both. Pass is extremely unique and an incredible experience. We just ate at provision for lunch. The vegetarian noodle dish and Cobia were awesome. Our waiter and service has been great on both visits.
Provisions is truly New American, whatever that means. With small shareable plates and wood-oven pizzas, the atmosphere of Provisions encourages long talks about European vacations and philosophy. We were lucky enough to go there for brunch. The ham o’ day was excellent place to showcase the quality of the ingredients used at Provisions. Next up we had a pizza and two of the egg dishes. The eggs florentine were a little salty, but the chicken and biscuits were even better than advertised! Although it just looks like a black box from the outside, the interior is beautiful and versatile. The Pass is one of the best restaurants in Houston. With a creative menu that changes frequently you are sure to be surprised each time you visit. Their prie fixe menu highlights the skills of the chefs while also putting the spotlight on local ingredients. The most impressive thing about the pass is their ability to think creatively about vegetables. In a place where the focus is typically on meat (BBQ, steak, etc) they way the Pass prepares something simple like a squash blossom to imitate the crispy layers of a croissant makes you reconsider why people are waiting hours in line for BBQ when vegetables are clearly superior. The wine and beverage pairings are on point, but I would recommend sharing, unless you are prepared to drink a bottle of wine each with dinner.
I have only been here once and it was an amazing experience. This place is the talk of the town and I really didn't want to spend the money on a fancy dinner. But my lady and I ate at the bar, had a couple of drinks and split a pizza for an amazing meal. The bill wasn't too bad for what we got and overall it was a great experience.
I really love both of these restaurants. I tend to go to the bar for a cocktail to start with and then head over to Provisions. Provisions is much more laid back and a great place for a wine and a pizza or some pasta. The Cresta de Gallo is by far my favorite! Though they have great bread, salad, and meat options as well. The Pass has never steered my wrong for special occasions and their 8 course tasting menu with the wine pairings has always been fantastic! The menu from both restaurants changes with the seasons and are both fun and playful with their flavors. A must try!
Went to the Pass and I have to say this place is a must try when you want to splurge on a meal. You select between an eight course or five course from two menus, one vegetarian. I ordered the eight course and it had everything from oysters to red velvet foie gras. The waiters explain to you what you will be devouring every course, if you are into that. It is nice knowing the concept behind what we are about to eat. As far as taste goes, your pallet will be in for a treat! It is a little adventurous, my course having items like Uni and Bone Marrow soup, but everything tasted great. The only thing I wasn't prepared for was the 3 hour meal. Be sure to take lots of topics to talk about with whomever you go!
Delicious and interesting food perfect for sharing. The wine and beer lists are also exceptional. This restaurant has the feel of a place that would be on a travel program showcasing real Americana cooking with inspiration from the eclectic population of Houston.
Pass and provisions is one of my top three restaurants in Houston. The experience of both restaurants is so enjoyable. Provisions is a fun, laid back atmosphere with amazing dishes such as their ham o'day, hen of the woods pasta and let's be real... Anyone of their pizzas. Pass is a great place for a special night, they go all out and we got to select several handmade desserts and lollipops to take home. I frequent this restaurant at least once a month.
We've been to Provisions a couple times and it's definitely delicious. Service has always been great and it's a nice place. The menu items can really vary in size and may or may not have sides, so make sure you know what you're ordering, but we haven't eaten anything less than delectable here.
Another American restaurant on my favorite list. This place is worth visiting and rest assured you'll enjoy the food and everything this restaurant can offer. They have a good staff, very very great tasting food, and clean surroundings. You can't resist eating more even if you are too full. I will for sure visit again. Looking forward to meeting the chef. Happy eating everyone! Enjoy!
Provisions: This to me is the ideal 'city' restaurant...the wait staff has the 'I'm a bit too confidant attitude' you want from a restaurant that has every right to be that confident! The food is epic, and can be described in no other way. The pork shoulder defines how southern BBQ should taste. A nice cozy interior and fantastic bar too off this gem.
Fantastic pizza, ham of the day, brussel sprouts are a must order. If you like old fashions order the fist full of dollars. I have never had a bad meal. The only possible down side are the desserts which can be hit or miss
An amazing restaurant with two great chefs. One of the chefs trained under Hector Blumenthal, the best chef in England. Whether you eat at Pass, for the elegant tasting menu, or Provisions for exotic fair that is amazingly inexpensive for the quality, both are amazing.
I live in walking distance and go to Provisions pretty often. I have never been to The Pass, which is the prix fixe half of the establishment. I am always a happy patron afterwards. We usually sit at the bar because we like the atmosphere better and you don't have to wait for a seat. They do take reservations for any number of people however if you would rather a table. The menu changes frequently so a recommendation won't work, although the drinks seems to stay constant and the Wylie Post is delicious if you like a little spice. The atmosphere is clean, cool and trendy. Dress to impress! Edit on 08/12/2015: We finally made it to The Pass. The entire experience, from getting sat at our table, to the special "Happy Birthday Zach" message on the menu, to finishing up and being sent home with pancake mix for the next morning, was so special. While both the omnivore menu and the vegetarian menu looked incredible, they were more than happy to accommodate my pescatarian menu request. Surprisingly, even considering Zach got the omnivore menu, both of our favorite courses of the night were a vegetarian course. They can do magical things. The exciting part about The Pass, that similar restaurant Oxheart doesn't offer, is the mixed beverage pairing. The beverages ranged from sherry, to sake, to beer, to cocktails, etc. It even included a shot. The night was a blast. The price tag was definitely higher than Oxheart, however it might be the slightly upscale atmosphere that you pay for. Definitely worth it for a special occasion.
Fred and the crew at Provisions have consistently provided the best service, remembering me and my preference for Italian wine, great suggestions for pairings, and of course, an absolutely gorgeous menu of classic foods, playfully and cleverly adapted, reinvented and renewed for a modern take. The menu regularly evolves as do the tastes. I go no less than once a month most recently on my birthday with a group of 6. I ordered for the whole table and we ate family style for a good 2 hours. 3 bottles of wine later and who knows how many pizzas we were blissful and without socks. Go, you won't regret it!
Fancy Houston brunch done right. This is not my typical fare, but the menu while small was extremely varied and unique. I love that! I didn't even care all the much for my meal, but it was interesting and different... It was not bad, just not my cup of tea. My wife's meal was excellent. And the bathrooms deserve another 5 stars of their own!
What an experience! From them printing out special menus with "Happy Anniversary" on the top to giving us a table right by the kitchen so we could watch the show, the staff was so considerate and worked very hard to make our anniversary dinner special. The sous chef Michael came out and visited with us, and our server Nick was extremely knowledgeable and patient with all of our questions. The manager came and talked to us, and even the person whose job it was to change out the silverware was personable and knowledgeable. We like to cook and experiment, and do one meal a year (on Christmas Eve) in which we try to be in the same universe as what The Pass does every night... We definitely don't get anywhere close, but we had so many questions about what they did and how they did it so that we could learn, and they didn't mind! I'm sure that we can be a nightmare sometimes with all of our questions, but they were terrific - patient and completely willing to discuss the ins and outs of the menu. And the food, the pairings, and the presentation were amazing. It was just a wonderful experience all around. Thank you everyone! We will definitely be back!
This place is one of our favorites. Provisions is a little more laid-back but still a really great place for a date night or anything else and the quality of food is still top. Get to The Pass right now though especially if you haven't been. We've been many, many times and the current menu is one of my favorites. The black truffle dish is in my top 5 favorite bites of all time along with the uni dish which looks like is still on their 4 course offering. Every single time we go I'm blown away by the care taken in every single aspect of our time there. From the waiters that seem to have studied each ingredient and each pairing for months to the small things like a specialized menu card for my girlfriend's birthday (without my asking). This is our favorite restaurant in Houston by far. The price is a little high on first glance but think of it like dinner and a show. The big glass window giving way to the immaculate and perfectly regimented kitchen. The waiters with endless knowledge of the techniques and sourcing of each ingredient and pairing. The 3 hour experience is well worth the cost and if you can swing it, don't forget to start you meal with the champagne cart.
Very good! Finally tried this place and it was so delicious. We sat outside on the patio and the staff kindly moved us from our bar top (which was a bit awkward for 3 of us) to a 4-top table as soon as one was available. We ordered the Cresta di Gallo which was super rich and delicious. I left not a lick of the sauce on the plate. We also split the lamb sausage pizza - not as life-changing as the pasta but delicious nonetheless. They also were playing Julia Child in the bathroom which was humorous and fun.
This review is for Provisions. We went on a Wednesday night, and it was packed. Nevertheless, the service was excellent. We were there for an occasion, and three different staff members came and congratulated us. The server asked about our preferences and made thoughtful recommendations. Each dish was flavorful, often in ways that were surprising but delicious. Even the chocolate cake was memorable.
This is my favorite restaurant (or 2 restaurants!) in Houston. We come to the Provisions side more frequently (order the Hen of the Woods pasta!) and the Pass side for special occasions. I've certainly never had anything bad here and it's always so hard to order because everything looks amazing. They have a really great bar too with lots of fun cocktails.
I have no words to describe how incredibly delicious this place is. The food here is OUTSTANDING!!! OUTSTANDING!!! OUTSTANDING!!! The manager is doing a outstanding job with this place. We had just driven 4 hours DALLAS and were waiting for my grandmother to arrive at the airport in Houston. And both our server and the manager were incredibly kind and accommodating with us. I highly, HIGHLY recommend!!!
I really like this place because I am not a picky eater, but beware! They do not substitute ANYTHING, nor will they take anything out of a dish. Like I said, not a problem to me, but I have eaten there with people and it was an issue for them to decide what to get. The yellowtail sashimi was so delicious, spicy, but delicious. On par with sushi restaurants. The pizzas are always incredible. The presentation never disappoints. The last time I was there, I went with a group of 6 and we all shared everything. That is the way to order here! The portions are small, so you get to try a little of everything if you order this way. We all ordered cocktails and they were all delicious. If you are a foodie, you will like it. If you are not, I would go somewhere else.
I've never been disappointed with a meal I've had here. I've only been to the "Provisions" side, but everything I've eaten has been flavorful, well-prepared and delicious. I also appreciate their tasting menus for lunch, which let me try some things I might not otherwise. The service has always been excellent, as well.
Excelente restaurante lo recomiendo 100%.excellent restaurant I recommend 100%
I came here to celebrate a belated Harvey birthday and had an exceptional experience at The Pass. It was nice just having to choose from a meat inclusive menu and a vegetarian menu. Each course was different, yet complimented one another. The 5 courses was the perfect amount, we added 2 additional courses and ended up taking most of those courses as leftovers. Read the menu carefully, the price of the additional courses is mixed in with the wine pairing prices and are easy to miss.
The attention from the waiter and all the staff was great! We order the mozzarella pizza but it wasn't like any other pizza I've tried before, it has its unique flavour. At the end we ordered a three chocolate tarte, it was amazing a mix of flavours and textures. Absolutely delicious! I'm definitely coming back soon.
Came for my birthday. I honestly came in with some low expectations since I heard that they changed the amount of courses they had on their menu. What was pleasantly surprised by every dish they brought out. Everything was great. My friends and I got the mix drinks pairing and some of my friends got the wine pairing. Some were and hit and some were and miss. The overall experience was great. We has once dish that we felt were off and we told them so they make a fresh set for the whole table. I will definitely be back again in the future and I can't wait to see what they have in store for next time.
Amazing food! One of the best service... we ordered roasted shishito peppers (must try!!!), Mozzarella pizza, Cresta di Gallo pasta and Blue corn/ corn custard /kasha streusel/blue berry ice cream in dessert (this one blew my mind)... Its a lil pricey but worth every penny you spend.
Come hungry and bring friends. On the Provisions side, you'll want to set yourself up to try as many dishes as possible, most of which are meant to be shared. The whole foie gras is decadence defined: herby, melty meat butter that, when paired with the various breads and spreads, creates different bites throughout the experience. You'll need at least 5-6 people to do this dish justice. Their desserts are next-level and often call on balanced savory notes and layers of soft and crunchy texture. Service is warm, friendly, and well-versed in the offerings. Could not recommend this place more.
An amazing and inspiring meal awaited us behind the large door, the entrance to the dining room, along with an amazing welll thought out wine pairing. We ordered one omnivore and one vegetarian, and to my surprise, as an omnivore, some of the vegetarian dishes were better than the omnivore selections. We enjoyed our meals and experience.
The best food I have had in Houston and believe me that is compliment...considering Houston is full of nicely decorated restaurants with mediocre food and service. The staff at the P & P is very attentive and you can tell they like working there. I will be back to try more of the very inventive menu. Delish!
Varied and interesting flavors, lots of fusion and new menu items, delicious desserts. They are not afraid to experiment--uni pizza, squid ink pasta, tuna crudo with ponzu lime sorbet--but could not help but think something was missing.
Went for our anniversary celebration. We were greeted at the table by the waitress. The fixed manu courses are very well presented. We love most of the courses, especially the fish taco, the belly and the rabbit. It is at higher end than many other restaurants. But for a price of 65 dollars, you get to taste the king crab, the uni, the snapper, the lamb bacon and the rabbit. No complaints.
I definitely think this is a dining experience that is worth trying. I went to Pass side of the house and thought their tasting menu had some wonderful highlights. First off let me say a place that offers a choice between a wine and a cocktail pairing with the menu definitely gets a special place in my heart. This is a place that is going to stretch your palette. This isn't the place to go when you want to enjoy familiar items that you love. I tried their 8 selection menu, and it was quite good. If you like gastromolecular style of cooking, this is the place to go. Dry ice comes into play with you meal in a couple of the courses. Fois Gras was suspended into a wonderful grape shape and served with a mini loaf of brioche. I think the pastry chef has a wicked sense of humor by combining flavors that don't normally go together. White chocolate truffles with seaweed weren't my favorite. The tomato olive oil cake was amazing. This is definitely an experience for the senses and worth trying.
Great place to take a group or just a significant other. Menu is constantly changing but always has something familiar on it. Wood oven and fancy meat slicer = always a few amazing Italian-influenced dishes and pizza (I'm in heaven). Fills up quick so make your reservation soon.
The service is impeccable, and I would say three out of the five courses were sublime. One course, the pickled sturgeon dish, was simply not very good. The dessert course, although it appeared simple, was quite sophisticated and palette pleasing. In all, $65 for a five-course prix fixe is a very good value, and the service here is truly remarkable.
Ham of the Day can't be beat. Excellent beer and wine selection. Food is innovative, delicious and attractively presented. Waitstaff is courteous and knowledgeable. I didn't care for the boar and olive terrine (think olive loaf) but they happily took it off the bill.
Pizza and drinks were amazing, especially the mushroom pizza. Pasta dishes were a bit on the small side. Also, the duck tart wasn't really a tart so much as a pate type rectangle without any pastry. Would definitely go back for happy hour for drinks and pizza many times
I ordered the magnificent seven, which I expected to be modern spin on an old fashioned. The drink was well mixed and boozy, but was delightfully refreshing and not alcohol forward. We ordered one appetizer and four entrees for three people, but we probably would have ordered one less. The description of the dishes sounded fantastic, but it didn't translate to what we were served. The mushroom pasta was unique but far too earthy and creamy. Brussels sprouts were tasty, but could've faired better with less sauce. Overall, Provisions had excellent service, but the food didn't quite meet my expectations.
This is actually two restaurants. The Pass is a nicer restaurant, which I have not been to and Provision, which is more family style dining. Think of Tapas style portions but with American inspired ingredients. My recommendation is just ask your waiter what they recommend and go with that. We normally get about 6 dishes between 2 people, as each dish is fairly small. I will have to update this when I have eaten at The Pass. Hopefully it will be really nice.
The relaxed atmosphere is welcoming, cordial and low key. The food was excellent across the board and quite creative. Would have been a 5 star review of it wasn't for the waiter repeatedly overpouring our wine, topping from a different bottle, and lack of knowledge about the wines he was pushing.
Review is for The Pass. The Pass is frankly an experience. The staff are hands down the best I have ever served by. The 8 courses were interesting and had a perfect progression and the wine pairings were sublime. However, the vegetarian menu felt like a watered down version of the meat menu - some dishes were simply the same components sans meat. If you are looking for a modern upscale dining experience (and you eat meat), The Pass will surely impress.
Went here to celebrate! The ambience and service was really nice. Food was excellent as well! Hen in the woods pasta, margherita pizza, and baguette with fresh butter were out of this world! Bass did not live up to it's price. In the desserts category, the zucchini and pistachio cake with orange ginger ice cream just wowed us, but the cashew based ice cream did not strike a tone with anyone in the group.
Wonderful food, quiet setting, great service! The flavors are a little bold, but I love that! I enjoyed the different flavors the chef Incorporated in the meal. I had the cauliflower soup which had a curry touch to it. I also had the halibut! Small portion but very delicious! I would go back just for the halibut! Must try but for lunch it was a bit pricey
I had great dinner and drinks with a business colleague here on a Tuesday evening. I found the service friendly and the menu very creative. The decor is interesting -- it has a sort of "prohibition-era speakeasy meets 'cold' industrial warehouse" feel -- as there are three separate areas: the downstairs bar (where I ate), the Pass restaurant and the Provisions restaurant. The roasted Shishito peppers, fried half chicken, and rye berry pumpernickel/beer jelly/bay blue cheese plate were all excellent and not your usual fare.
We had the anniversary dinner at the pass. So the meau was specified with happy anniversary note on it , which is sweet. The restaurant is well designed, not too big or noisy. The ambient light is supple and soft but not too dark. The five course meau taste delicious in general with nice plating. The only disappointment is the first king crab course. The crab meat is too salty while the water melon and tomato are not so well balanced in this salty dish. There's an other blend dish in the supplemental meau which contains caviar and farm egg. Its toasted bread base is no flavor and burnt. Other smaller imperfections are things like bitter tasted edible flower garnishing, and get prepared to protect your nice clothes when having the ‘belly dish’. Overall, the place is still very good.
In all honesty, this was not an experience I enjoyed nor was it worth the steep price. Between the mister and I, dinner was probably around $360! For the price tag, I was expecting nothing but amazing quality of food but that was not the case. Service was superb nonetheless. They did a great job of explaining the menu and the drinks accompanying it. However, my disappointment was with all the courses and time. We literally spent 4 hours there! That’s just a ridiculous amount of time wasted. 1st - chip & quac. cool concept with the edible avocado arrangement. Wish they had provided silverware’s to eat with it because ether chips would fall apart and crumble when trying to scoop the guacamole. Appetizers: Fois gras torchon & butternut squash fondue. These were my least favorite. The fois gras was hidden underneath a lot of fried root vegetables. And once removed, the liver pate was overly sweet. Maybe only took 2 bites before I gave up on it. The butternut squash looks delish but it was undercooked. Squash was really tough and not tender enough to cut with a knife. And the cheese within wasn’t melted al the way to where it was gooey. Slightly disappointed. By the time they bought another one out, we were already over it. 2nd - smoke sturgeon. This was not that great either. The itself was overcooked and dry. The cabbage foam threw me off a little. It wasn’t a nice aftertaste. The Brussels sprout salad was okay. Liver mouse threw me off though because it was heavily salted. 3rd - uni pasta. This was definitely the most pleasing to the eye. It was beautifully presented but the taste was just so overwhelming. The wakame butter and uni within the pasta was really salty. I took 2 bites and chugged my ice tea. Gave my portions to a friend. When you eat something too salty, your tongue starts to get this tingly feeling. Not for it. 4th - Texas wagyu. This dish tasted the best. Has the most depth to it. Meat was cooked perfectly. Portion size was like kids size. Literally a few bites and then you’re done. 5th - coconut ice cream. Not for me. Overall, all of our dish were really pretty and easy to the eye but taste was little off. I had high hopes for the restaurant but this might be my first and last.
Went to the Pass. From the entrance to seating to the ambiance it was very well throughout. The service was great but the food was a hit or miss. All the dishes were well presented, a treat for the eyes, but lacked in taste. I might return when they have a different tasting menu out.
Interesting place. Food was ok. they have a nice combination on the menu. I had the halibut. It’s bland and make sure you’re not hungry. It’s a small portion. More like an appetizer dish. The mussels dish was the tastiest dish we ordered that evening. Overall, I wasn’t impressed.
For some, the last impression is what is remembered most. And the last action from the server put the icing on the cake on my dining experience at The Pass. But more about the end (so it's the last thing you read..) Parking is valet or park on the street from what I could tell. I'm against paying someone to move my car 10 feet so I parked about a block from The Pass and walked a couple of minutes. The Atmosphere of the Pass is great, you're in a small room with 15 or so tables. The tables are big with a clean white table cloth and a small centerpiece that seems to be a signal to the servers that food hasn't been ordered if it still there. There are pretty much 4 choices for meals, 5 or 8 courses for omnivore or herbivore menu. You can get drink pairings if you want as well. Servers are quick to refill water and ask if you want more drinks if you don't order a pairing which makes sense which alcohol beefs up you already hefty check. The food overall was good but not the best. There are many other small plate course restaurants that have amazing flavor, here the dishes went from this is tasty to i don't even. Also, the food we were served seemed room temperature or lower. While some are supposed to be that like an ice cream sandwich, pork that has "seared right before plating" shouldn't be that temp unless it's been sitting there waiting for garnishes. Speaking of sitting, you will be doing that for hours (meals will last 2.5-3.5 hours) to the point where you feel like they forgot about you as they bring your next dish to people around you that weren't "ahead" of you dish wise. And finally, the part that makes me never want to go back. After you chop off your arm to pay for the meal, they gave each patron a nice little gift wrapped cake. Two people to the left of use, two people to the right of us, 4 people behind us, all got a cake of their own. Come our turn, we get one. It wasn't until my girlfriend asked why everyone else got two were we given a second cake. They could have been running low, but it paints a bad picture when we've been sitting for three hours watching people get "free" cake and we get one thrown in our face. It reminds me to tell you that the servers are nowhere near good enough for such a fine dining establishment. The chefs that brought out food randomly were more cordial and their job is to make food not talk to guests. I'll go back maybe, because it kind of sucks having one arm.
The chicken terrine, shaved ham & cheese board appetizers were all great. Our main courses were just okay. The "steak for 2" did not have much flavor. The pizza was great but the 2 homeade pasta dishes we ordered were undercooked, although they did have yummy sauces. I definitely wasn't impressed by any of the 3 desserts we ordered but I've heard they can be hit or miss depending on the day. Service was really good but I did have to send my first glass of champagne back because it was given to me at room temp.
My husband and I went to The Pass for our anniversary. We loved the experience of coming in and going to the private dining room and also the open kitchen. The food was good but every dish was so over-thought. Also I'm not a big fan of seafood and there was a lot of that on the menu. I had the 5 course and my husband got the 8 course menu. Our bill was $350 at the end. It was a nice experience but I don't think it was worth the cost. We would like to try Provisions which shares a kitchen and doesn't carry quite the price tag.
Over priced for the quality of the service and the food. I had a butter knife drop on my lap cause of the server and I wasn't offered an apology. The waitress did a spectacular job but we had three plates arrive at the table from the kitchen only to be swapped with another table...not to mention the AC was dripping all over one of our party members. They did offer compensation with a bottle of sparkling wine which made up for the experience.
My office had our Christmas party at Pass & Provisions in the upstairs room. This is not the type of place I frequent but the staff was great and the food was okay. My date had the fish and it was horrible. I had the steak and it was very good. We all passed around samples of our meal and overall, it was okay. Not one of the top 10 on my list but the facility and staff were great.
So this is a difficult review for me to write. I so desperately wanted to like this place! In fact, I was sure I would. I've been to Seth and Terrence's other....chef's tables (I suppose that's what you would call them) so I know what they're capable of! Their creativity, vision, and skill in the way they bring things together is amazing. However, it just fell a little short for me this time. Atmosphere: I do love the way they re-imagined the Gravitas space. They brought in wood flooring from a basketball court for the walls and sectioned the space off so it doesn't feel as empty (not that it was even close to being empty! It was packed for a Tuesday night!). Service: Better than average/good. But with a place like that and the prices that you're paying, good service is expected. Food: With four people we were able to get a wide variety of dishes, however none of us were particularly impressed. The food on its own was okay, nothing spectacular. However, taking into account the portion sizes, the price and what came in the dish, it definitely seemed overpriced. Some of the orders came on such large plates that they dwarfed the food presented and left us wondering where the other half was. If the portions are going to be so small, they should be served on plates more proportional to the serving size. The only item that we were more impressed by was the pizza. It was a good size, on an appropriately sized plate, and while more expensive than an average pizza, was a steal compared to the rest of the menu. Wine: Fantastic. Got three bottles and they were all wonderful...but a wine list won't change my opinion. Maybe my expectations were too high? Maybe it was an off night? But for me, compared to all the farm to table restaurants popping up all over town, there are other places I would choose to dine at before coming back here. But who knows, maybe in the future I'll give it another chance.
I went here for my birthday. Our table was not ready at our reservation time. We waited at the bar for 10 minutes. Our waiter, Read, was not engaging and seemed annoyed when we asked for his recommendations. The food was very good (except for the foie gras and chicken skin dish), and all of the other staff members that we interacted with were pleasant. Maybe I'll be back but probably not any time soon.
The Pass: Blah, not worth the hype. Maybe I just don't understand complex food... and frankly don' t really care to if that is it! The flavors on a plate should compliment each other. They do not so don't try to mix food. Be sure to separate your bites. That said, each pile was unique and nice. I finally understand why people pay so much for caviar. power basil cream flakes are amazing but did not fit with anything else on the plate. Imagine pickled mushrooms, ricotta clumps, nut powder w chili powder, and mushroom bread all on top of truf sauce. Each individually wonderful. Any one with any other a disaster. They over salted everything. Went for the 8 course, don't bother, get the 5. The extras are the worst plates. It was too expensive. 200 person at the end of the night. Really amazing wine. For me that was worth it. The wine made the food better. The pastry chef is clearly the best one in the back and I'm not really a fan of post dinner indulgences. The waiters were nice, but had no personality. They just rattle off something they memorized. Makes it a bit impersonal but that fits with the place. Am I glad I went? yes for the experience, but I'll never go again. Would I recommend it to friends? decidedly no. I will try provisions though. I could smell the pizza all night and wished I could have moved over the other side- damn that $150 cancellation fee! not to mention I was hungry walking out the door. I can list at least 15 better places in houston to eat. If you want a really special night with out all of the pretense in perhaps the most romantic buildings go enjoy Just Dinner. I promise you will love it and its personality.
I had pretty high expectations of The Pass after having had a delicious meal at Provisions a few weeks ago. My husband and I, together with our two grown kids went today and had one of the more disappointing meals. First of all, it was freezing in the restaurant, which added to the discomfort of sitting though a generally unappetizing five and eight course meal. Some of the courses were tasty, but nothing qualified for my top rating of "lick the plate" good. Then on top of this, my husband had the wine pairing, in which he paid $45 for five half glasses of mediocre wine. I wouldn't suggest that anyone pursue this route in future, either get a bottle of wine, or forgo entirely in favor of the complimentary water. All in all a very disappointing experience.
Provisions dinner experience. Service was very good (3.5 to 4 stars). The menu....well, just because the offerings are clever and unusual does not mean that they will equate to being tasty or good. The pizza was good, but there are a lot of excellent "real" pizza places in town. Did not (will not) try the foie gras. Our group had a smattering of everything else. The mussels in chorizo broth - did not taste like chorizo had ever come close to the pot, and you can really eat so many of the mussels before you just get bored. And on, and on, and on.... I would call this type of cuisine "hipster-random"; an homage to the crowd and the ingredient choices of the fare.
To begin, they called us an hour before to tell us they overbooked and moved our party outside. In the summer time, unacceptable. The waiter left randomly while we ordered after one of our party of seven ordered before coming back to finish. Not sure what happened but he didn't excuse himself. Other than that he was really good. If you like culinary art and not taste, this is the place for you. I will not be returning. I prefer my food to taste good. I'm not shallow enough to go back for status and not have taste go along with it. On a good note, the music was good.
Provisions-Drinks from the bar were fine star. Seating was ok but we were cramped and anytime some sitting next to you had to get up they put their butt in you face and vise versa. Good was just ok, and with the price I knocked it down a star. The ceasar salad and smoked cumin salad was awesome and big hits. We also had a cold cauliflower soup that was good. But our main meal was just average. The chicken terrine had a nice smokey flavor but honestly was just a fancy meatloaf and not the price. The crudo tasted good but it needed salt as it was under seasoned. The pizza looked good but I didnt partake. Loud and not a good date spot unless you don't care to hear more of your neighbors conversation than your own.
This place is not good anymore. Hadn’t been here in a year. My how things have changed. They used to have the best cocktails, rivaling Anvil. Cocktails were not good, mixed by an amateur. Every dish we ordered had this foamy cream of mushroom sauce. What happened?
They completely butchered the Cresta di Gallo! It was one of my favorites and I used to have it at lunch all the time- all of a sudden, the recipe “changed” -in that someone is dumping a kind of sauce they might have cooked the mushrooms in, right into the pasta sauce. It’s no longer foamy, creamy, subtle .. now it’s overly sower, overly salty and rancid. What happened ? Did the chef change here? Is their staff incompetent and no longer can follow simple steps for a good old recipe? Quality of food has gone down, tremendously. I had really high hopes for this place, but for this caliber restaurant, it is inexcusable .
Normally I like the Pass, it has one of the best tasting menus in the city. But when you show up on time to a reservation (one they couldn't possibly add another person to) and you've waited over an hour and you still can't sit down, you have to give them a single star for the ridiculously bad service.
My husband and I celebrated our first anniversary at the Pass this week. The food was delicious, and the service was good. However, I'm pretty disappointed in their customer service. To start, my husband ordered a whisky with an ice cube on the side. As he went to grab the ice cube, the glass of whisky overturned. The waiter saw it happen and said, can I get you another? He brought another. At the end of the meal, he presented us with two small tasting glasses of champagne to celebrate our anniversary. When we got the bill, they had charged my husband for the glass that overturned. Clearly, this was his fault, albeit an accident, but I don't expect a restaurant this nice to charge for this sort of accident. Note that our bill was over $400 - expected, but would have expected that they cover this. Secondly, the tasting glasses that were presented to us (without our asking for them) appeared on our bill. I didn't mind paying for this, but again, not what you expect from a few hundred dollar meal when something is given for 'celebration'. Finally, as we pulled into our home, my husband immediately went out into the yard and vomited. He was sick all night, and mine started the next morning. We called and talked to the restaurant, and they told us that they would see if anyone else had gotten sick. We never heard back from them. While the food was very good, appreciated the menu, I expect a much higher level of customer service, and basic empathy when I pay this kind of money.
