Instagram-worthy setting, tables, tableware, and food. The Blueberry Love Pancakes were some of the best pancakes we've ever had, and the Wild Mushroom Truffle Toast was well-loved at our table! (Not recommended if you don't love truffle! 🤣) We also enjoyed the Steak and Eggs (and wish there was more of it)! The SoCal Benedict missed the mark for us as a favorite, but we still managed to eat most of it (I was the only one who left any of it because I personally found it too salty). My friend who got the gingerbread latte loved it, and said it didn't make her jittery. My friend who got the butterfly pea flower tea also loved it. I liked the uniqueness of the unicorn hot chocolate, but personally dislike sprinkles; I enjoyed the lollipop and the hot chocolate itself. I would highly recommend this place for a girls' day out or a date! 💕
My third visit and still a charm,in fact got better! The owner was decorating herself for Easter and had a pleasure to have a quick chat as she wore a Pug t shirt, she shared they have some hidden pug mementos around some of which I could quickly filter! Food, service and ambience at 💯 as always, quality unmatched and perfection on flavors! I have always loved their in house bread!!! The oat meal latte was too good and even the servers were prompt and paid proactive attention! We had a pleasant day overall as the vibe was set right! Let the crowd/queue not dissuade you, Its worth the wait!!!
Came on Sunday at 10am and even with a party of six didn’t wait too long. Super cute decor, great service, good coffee drink choices, and delicious food. I had the lobster Benedict and shared the shashuka dish with my daughter. YUM ! Breakfast potatoes were a little disappointing but everything else was great.
Hands down one of the best places I have eaten. I was a little hesitant to visit bc there were no reservations, but even at prime-time brunch hour (11am-ish), there was no wait for three people. I’m sure if you have a larger party, that might be different. The place was packed inside and out, but I think service is fast, so they get people in and out. The restaurant is SUPER cute and offers a nice ambiance; it’s great for families, friends or even couples. Food was SOOOOO good. My group shared the mushroom toast, a healthy skillet and their infamous S & S pancakes. You guys, this is ALL the hype and definitely lived up to our expectations. We had great service at the door and at the table, but I failed to get either people’s names. Anyhow, this place gets 10 stars from me.
Very cute and Californian color palette of pink and green. Iconic and pleasant. Our server Tim was very nice and we had a good conversation. We tried their latter and chai. I loved the chai! Tried their blueberry pancakes and their spicy sunrise skillet which came with sourdough bread. The pancake was very impressive because it was very fluffy with what I think home made blueberry jam. Didn’t get to wait when it was like 11:40 on a Sunday in the less busy season.
Sugar and Scribe came highly recommended by our hotel as a great spot for lunch, and it is easy to understand why. The café is well known for its bright, welcoming atmosphere, a refined yet relaxed California style, and a menu that blends fresh, high-quality ingredients with creative touches. It is located in the heart of La Jolla, just a short walk from the coast, in a very pleasant and lively area, perfect for a break during a day of exploring. Unfortunately, we arrived right at closing time, so we did not get the chance to have lunch. We are an Italian family traveling with two teenagers aged 13 and 14, and our dog. Despite the restaurant being closed, we were warmly welcomed by Tim, an incredibly kind and helpful person. Even though service had ended, he took the time to assist us, giving us excellent advice on our program for the rest of our stay in San Diego and helping us find a very good alternative for lunch nearby. That level of genuine hospitality left a strong impression on us. Even without having the chance to eat there, the care, friendliness, and professionalism we experienced fully reflect the reputation this place has online, both for its food and for its people. We stayed four days in La Jolla and truly wanted to return in the following days, but our schedule was extremely tight with planned visits to San Diego’s main attractions. That said, Sugar and Scribe is absolutely on our list for the next visit. A well-deserved five-star review for the spirit, kindness, and hospitality we experienced. We will definitely be back.
This place is not only adorable, but also features charming decor, tasty pastries, fun drinks, and delicious food. It’s a perfect spot for a girls’ get-together or a date with that special someone. The service is good, and the wait time was reasonable. Keep in mind, parking can be a bit tricky and might require parking farther away. I highly recommend trying this place.
I brought three pies - Key Lime, Lemon Meringue & Cherry, to my parent’s Thanksgiving dinner in Orange County, and they were the highlight of the evening! Thank you, Sugar & Scribe, for making me look good! The pies are not only beautiful to look at, but absolutely delicious. It’s clear your pies are prepared by the most talented pastry team around using only the finest ingredients.
I grew up in La Jolla, so I’ve been coming to this shopping center for decades and remember growing up that my mom and all her friends would go to The Cottage across the street, it was always popular with the La Jolla moms. Sugar and Scribe being a new addition to the La Jolla landscape and I am really happy it is here because honestly it is really good and is always a consistently yummy and quick option. I would call it more of an upscale breakfast or brunch spot given that they don’t really specialize in dinner and have premium ingredients. Inside is very feminine in design, you will see lots of pink and flowers so it has a very Mother’s Day brunch look to it, which I really enjoyed. Reminds me of The Ivy in Los Angeles. We sat in covered seating outside, and the weather was perfect in late November, one of my favorite things about beautiful La Jolla. Our server was very polite and everything that we ordered came out very fast. Parking is fairly easy to find in this part of town, we were able to find a spot within the small shopping center the restaurant is located in, otherwise it would be a pay lot or street parking. I have been here a few times before, but this visit I decided to mix up my order. I started off with a Cinnamon Roll Latte and really enjoyed it. The cinnamon flavor was not too strong and overall it was really good. I also ordered their Black Iced Tea and you can tell it is homemade and was very good and refreshing. For my breakfast, I chose the Lobster Benedict and really liked it. I added avocado, which I would also suggest doing. There was a lot of lobster meat on it and the flavors were well balanced, and very good. Overall, this is a great brunch option and yet another reason to go to my favorite town in San Diego.
You have GOT to try the pancakes….I am literally sitting here in the restaurant still eating these pancakes while writing this review because you have to know what I’m experiencing. These are easily the best pancakes of my life!! I dipped some in my husbands caramel sauce from his French toast and my eyes got brighter, the sky got brighter, I could smell the flowers a bit more. I honestly think these pancakes have changed my life. You must get them. They are even good plain!! I would never say that if you know me…. Ugh I hope to come back here one day.
Delicious! The food is delicious, the benedict was cooked perfectly, with a tasty hollandaise sauce and crispy bacon. The potatos on the side were a great compliment, sliced like chips, they were perfect for scooping the sauce and yolk. The waffles were delicious too, the peach burbon sauce and elderberry cream was to die for We went during peak sunday bunch time (after 10 am on a sunday), parking is a little tricky, you might have to go a couple blocks, and since this place is popular, you might have a little bit of a wait. However the staff is friendly and the atmosphere is fun, plus there is a take out coffee counter with pastries to order if you need somthing to tide you over. If you can, definitely visit, the sweet and savory offering for brunch are great! Will definitely come back.
***Second Review*** Another outstanding breakfast Ordered: Smothered and covered skillet with BBQ Beef - over easy eggs smothered with cheesy chicken gravy. Beef was tender with balanced sour and sweetness of BBQ sauce. Butter Poached Lobster Benedict - Deliciously rich hollandaise sauce over perfectly poached egg. Great portion of succulent lobster meat on a toasty English muffin. Chicken Caesar Wich - buttery and flaky croissant with well seasoned and crispy buttermilk fried chicken and fresh salad on the side. 6” Dripping in Finesse Cake (Vanilla Cake w/ Strawberry Cardamom Buttercream) - $90 cake that is so worth it! Simple, elegant design and luscious cake! It was 915AM on Wednesday so I have to drive around the block to find a parking spot. Courteous and attentive staff. Highly recommended for brunch menus and desserts/cakes! ***First Review*** Charming and aesthetic decor which is inviting upon entering. Ordered: Crabby Royale Benedict - loaded with delicious crabmeat, fresh arugula/avocado and perfectly poached egg topped with spicy sriracha hollandaise sauce makes this dish to order again on our next visit. Roasted potatoes was crispy and seasoned well. **spicy sriracha hollandaise wasn’t that spicy** Famous Rebellious Lobby Roll - right amount of delicious lobster meat with lemon aioli and seasonings in a tasty/butter roll. It comes with arugula salad. S & S Chocolate - Picture and taste perfect! Chocolate and whipped topping is so so good! The “Best” according to my wife; which I Agree! The toasted marshmallow was good too. Our server, Erin was nice and attentive from start to finish. Still few empty parking spot by the surrounding streets right after 9AM on a Saturday. No waiting to get in and only took 10-15 mins for our entire orders. Highly recommended. Will absolutely coming back to try their other dishes and desserts.
This is a great spot with delicious food. Everything we ate was delicious. The Bread Pudding French toast was yummy! The place is dog friendly (outside patio) and they have a good portion shredded chicken for the dogs. The service was good up until the end when we wanted to get things boxed and pay the bill.
This place is a brunch goers dream!! Decor is very floral and stylish. Servers are so kind and the food tastes just as amazing as it looks. We went as a group of 5 and one of my friends was on a scooter and they sat us by a table with a ramp for easy access which we really appreciated! I definitely recommend the Naughty Skillet or the Bread Pudding French Toast!! Nice spiciness on the skillet and for the French toast, all the toppings come on the side so you can customize it yourself! Parking can be a bit difficult to find but OMG everyone needs to try this place out!! 10/10
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Sugar and Scribes, and it was an absolute delight! This charming breakfast spot never fails to impress with its delicious offerings. I ordered the Corned Beef Skillet, and it was bursting with flavor — the perfect combination of savory corned beef, tender potatoes, and fresh veggies. Each bite was a comforting experience that left me wanting more. To top it all off, I couldn't resist trying their Lemon Curd Pancakes. Wow! These pancakes were perfectly fluffy and had just the right amount of tartness from the lemon curd, creating a balance that was simply divine. It’s no wonder this place is a favorite of mine! The service was friendly and attentive, making the whole experience even better. If you’re looking for a fantastic breakfast spot with delicious food, I highly recommend Sugar and Scribes. You won’t be disappointed!
Fun and unique environment, I’d guess a great experience for kids especially. Our server was great, the mushroom toast was awesome, the crab cake benedict was alright. Unfortunately the manager was disruptive, yelling at staff in front of customers multiple times for minor things, which was disappointing and changed the experience for us and many around us.
I love this place and visit often. The servers are always wonderful; the indoor staff and baristas can be hit or miss. One thing that stood out this time was the indoor seating. I called earlier that week about seating for our company holiday brunch, I was told indoor seating isn’t available on weekdays and reservations aren’t taken on weekends at all, which I understood. We still came on a very cold Monday and were told seating was outside only, which was fine, but I noticed groups dining indoors when I went to pay. It may have been situational, but the inconsistency made the experience feel uncomfortable.
As the name suggests, Sugar and Scribe leans heavily on the sweet side. I ordered an oat milk latte that came sweetened by default, even though I didn’t request sugar so I’d recommend asking for no added sugar in advance if you prefer it less sweet. The bread pudding French toast was rich and flavorful, though definitely a large portion, best shared! My husband got the shakshuka without egg (he’s vegetarian), which was okay. They don’t offer dedicated vegetarian options, but the kitchen is accommodating and can modify dishes to exclude eggs or meat, which is helpful to keep in mind. The ambience is cute, the staff is friendly, and the wait time was reasonable. Overall, it’s a cozy spot for a sweet brunch, just be mindful of how sugary things can get.
It was an absolute treat! The interiors were adorable, with a pink aesthetic and beautiful floral decor that made the whole place feel warm and inviting. The menu had a great selection of breakfast items and pastries. I tried the French Toast and the Eggs Benedict—both were delicious! The French Toast was perfectly fluffy and just the right amount of sweet, while the Benedict had a rich, flavorful hollandaise sauce. Overall, it’s a great spot for a cozy breakfast or brunch. If you love cute cafes with a lovely ambiance and tasty food, this place is definitely worth a visit!
Came for Sunday breakfast around 10:30am, very busy, which we expected. The text system for table readiness is great, and the ~30 min wait to be seated was fine. Unfortunately, once seated, service really fell apart. It took ~25 minutes for a server to come by, another ~20+ minutes just to get coffee and water, and nearly an hour total for food to arrive. Our meals didn’t come out at the same time, which made it worse for our group. The most frustrating part was being told there’s a 90-minute table limit, despite how long we waited with no service. I’d much rather wait longer outside than feel rushed after poor service. That said, the food itself was delicious. Just be warned, expect to wait and eat fast.
‘Ingredients are on the back’ is our new inside joke slogan with my gf. This was the response when we asked what was the flavors for on of their cookies in a fairly rude way. Pretty sure it was the owner or GM. Really wanted to like this place. The atmosphere is beautiful. But the GM was just really hard to witness. She was talking down on her staff. The food was good, small portions compared to The Cottage across the street, but decent. But the GM telling customers to get of the way without apologies or anything really bummed the experience out. Just go to The Cottage across the street.
