The young cashier/server served me my warm apple pie 10 minutes before serving me my hamburger 😂 By the time the hamburger arrived and eaten, the apple pie was cold. Not a lot of brain power with that one. Imagine management providing job training and explaining to someone they should serve the meal before the dessert lol.
The Apple Pan is a Los Angeles institution. The diner has been dishing up classic American fare since 1947, and there's a reason it's remained popular for all these years. The food is absolutely amazing. From the pies to the burgers, everything is cooked to perfection. The service is wonderful too - the waitstaff are always quick to help and they make sure you have everything you need. If you're looking for an amazing meal in a warm and welcoming setting, The Apple Pan is definitely the place for you.
This was my moms favorite burger spot when she was young, so I just had to try it myself while in Beverly Hills. SO GLAD I DID!!! It was just as my mom described. Fresh, fast, and that sauce!!! Delicious!!! I'm happy the Apple Pan seems to not have changed since the olden days :) Highly recommend for burger lovers!
An LA favorite for generations, known for its hickory burger and pies. But for me, it was the tuna melt I loved most (it’s off the menu) make sure to add grilled onions. You’re welcome!
I've been going to this place since the 50s. Now I live 100 miles away, so it's been decades since I've been there. Was visiting a relative in a nearby town, so I made it a point to drive over to grab a "Hickory Burger" to see if they were still as great as I remembered. Wasn't disappointed! Apple Pan is still amazing! Sadly, their prices have gone way up, but still worth it!
I love this place. Their dedication to high quality burgers makes In n Out seem like cafeteria food by comparison. Try the cherry cream pie, it's very different than others I've tasted before and it's great beyond words.
Literally 5/5 across the board! Their Hickory burgers are so good and the vibe of the restaurant is one of which I can always depend on to be an enjoyable experience. I have been coming here for years and it never disappoints how good their food is and the service that they offer. Parking is available around the neighborhood and along the street.
Amazingly good burgers and amazingly good pie at this “blast from the past” diner style restaurant in LA. It’s pretty simple but often the best places are. The size of the burger is really good and be prepared for a ton of fries. Sitting in back on a nice night is pretty much as close to perfect as you can get in this crazy world. Don’t expect amazing service, but the awesome food makes up for it.
This has always been one of my favorite spots. Banana Pie wins - such a memorable taste! I always make sure to come back whenever I’m in the area.
Got the hickory burger and it was so good. Soft bread , meat cooked just right and the hickory flavor from the sauce was so balanced.fresh lettuce and pickles rounded out the burger well. I also had the cherry cream pie which was great! Not too tart and has a custard base below the cherries. Def will go again.
In writing this review, I am actually shocked I’m giving it a near perfect score. While the Steakburger doesn’t look like anything special, it absolutely is. That crisp, crunchy iceberg lettuce makes a work of difference in providing freshness and texture. The two kinds of pickles, relish and slices, add acidic brightness to the juicy beef patty. The Tillamook Cheddar gives a velvety creaminess that envelopes a near perfect sandwich. I could not stop eating the French fries. While they were not mind blowing and a little under seasoned, I still ate these crispy pockets of potato by the handful — they were even good cold. The Boysenberry Pie is a delicious balance of sweet and tart that is mellowed out by the smooth and creamy whipped cream. The Pecan Pie is pure syrupy sweetness that meets oaky nuttiness in a delicately gooey filling broken up by the sandy texture of whole and chopped pecans. My one knock off is that the crust is just average. Despite a few nitpicks here and there, Apple Pan is serving up what might just be a quintessential hamburger.
I started coming to The Apple Pan shortly after they opened, and now, my grandchildren are 4th generation aficionados. Happily, the new owners had the good sense to not change anything and it is as good as ever. The steakburger is great, as are the very generously sized tuna salad and egg salad sandwiches and fries (I always ask for them crispy). Service is not quite as good and personal as it used to be, but efficient. This is one of the few restaurants in L.A. to hold up to the old standards.
Love these vintage establishments! On a chilly Saturday late-afternoon, the inside counter was pretty full, so we enjoyed our Apple Pie, Pecan Pie, and French Fries outside at a picnic table (with a portable heater). Note: Parking can be challenging because Glendon is for permitted residents only, but we lucked out and found a meter around the block on Malcolm near Pico.
Feels like you’re in a movie and the food is soo good. Staff is very very friendly, they recommended the best dessert in the house and we saw a celebrity, very cool and welcoming place for all, no-one was bothered. They have an outdoor seating which is great and delicious food and dessert. Take me back to the Apple Pan anytime!
Like stepping back in time! Thanks to George Motz, Alvin Cailan, and other YouTube burger influencers who inspired me to include this on my LA burger journey! My wife and I tried both the classic steakburger as well as the hickoryburger. If it's your first time and you don't have someone to share with so you can try both, I recommend the hickoryburger. The only difference is the sauce. We ended our meal by splitting a slice of coconut cream pie, which was delicious! It's obviously a very well-respected and nostalgic establishment for the area. We were staying at the Waldorf Astoria, and when I went down to the concierge to request the house car, and I told him where we were trying to go, he said "The Apple Pan. Excellent choice!" Nick, the driver, agreed. When we ran into him in the lobby the next day, he said we had inspired him to go there when he gets off work that night.
Classic, long standing local burger lover's place. Fries are very fresh and delicious. Burger is just good as always. Recommend sitting at the bar table, not the backyard patio. Can feel more vibe and easy to order more. Coffee is unexpectedly decent. Go well with pies. This is definitely one of the places we keep coming again and again for lunch, dinner or late night snack too.
My step-dad took my mom and I out to eat here late the other night. He had been going here for a while and talked up the pies and burgers to us. It did not disappoint! They are open late, and even though we went on the later side, it was still busy. We were able to grab a spot pretty quickly and service was very fast and punctual. My mom and I split the hickory burger and some fries, both were great. It was a solid burger with great flavor. I also had a hot chocolate that had this thick housemade whipped cream and it soothed my soul. We had a couple pies to end the meal, a banana cream and a pecan (they were out of apple); both of which were really delicious. The service was nice and friendly. Seating was neat because it was a giant counter wrapped around part of kitchenette, so you could watch them make the burgers. Really enjoyable place with reasonable prices and wonderful pie.
The Apple Pan has been serving simple, straight forward food since 1947! They do what they do right! Love the atmosphere, dine at seats around the counter or get take-out at the window. Loved our burgers and fries, and MUST save room for pie! We sampled the pecan, apple, and banana cream, all excellent!
The Apple Pan has a very limited menu, but what they have is amazing. My parents went in dates here back in the 1950’s, and it’s still like walking back in time when you walk through the front door. The burgers and pies are always fantastic. Not many places you can go that has had such high quality food and service for decades. My hat is off to the owners and management.
Huell Howser would be proud. It was our first time visiting and the staff were warm, friendly and inviting. During the meal, the manager visited us to ensure everything was ok. We had the indoor counter seating, but there was plenty of outdoor seating as well. See for yourself. Enjoy!
This place feels like stepping straight into the late nineteen forties where nothing has changed in the best possible way. You sit at the classic U shaped counter, watch the cooks move with the same rhythm they have kept since nineteen forty seven, and take in the smell of burgers sizzling on the flat top. The Hickory burger with cheese is the star of the place with its smoky sauce, crisp lettuce, melted cheese and that simple old school construction that reminds you why the classics became classics. The pies are equally iconic with slices of apple, banana cream or chocolate cream that taste handmade and unchanged by time. The whole experience feels like Los Angeles history still alive and serving food with the same pride and charm it had the day it opened. I've been going here for many many years, it's historic, it's L.A. - it's everything! If you are looking for the best burger, your new favorite place, or an old-fashioned good time, definitely worth a stop, or two stops, or many stops! :)
The Hickory Burger and Apple Pie a-la-mode tastes the same as it did in the 70's. My parents brought me here when I was little, and now I'm turning the next generation on to it. Since we are coming up from south Orange County we only get to stop in every once in a while, but it's always good and it always reminds me of a simpler time. Since we hit it late at night we were able to all sit together at the counter, which is not always the case. When you first see the menu, you might think, wait, $5 for fries? But yes, they are tasty, and yes, there are enough to share between two people. And if you're looking forward to pie, ask when you arrive if there's any left, and ask your server to set aside a slice for you. This time around my wife opted for the Grilled Cheese on Rye, and she loved it. My son got a Double Steak Burger and still had room to split a Chocolate Cream Pie with his wife. Consistently, I have noticed that the chefs give an extra measure of hickory sauce and also a significant amount of lettuce, enough to make the first mouthful crunch. Just as good as I remember it from 40 years ago.
I have been wanting to come here for YEARS. Each time I'm in Los Angeles, I try and visit, but for one reason or another, it just never happened until now. Obviously they're known for their burgers, and being the burger lover that I am, I had to give it a go. Now you can sit back inside if you want, but on such a nice day, we opted to sit outside. To sit and eat outside, you go to the side window first, place your order and pay, and then you're given a number. In about 10 minutes, your food is ready, and they bring it outside and call your number and you collect it from the cart. It's quite and lovely out the back, and a perfect spot for eating lunch. The burger was fantastic. I just ordered the most basic cheeseburger with a hickory sauce and it was great. It's up there for sure with one of the better burgers I've had. It was fresh and hot and perfect in every way. My sister ordered their fries and she was happy with those. Pricing is good. It's reasonable for what you get. The one "awful" aspect of eating here is the parking (what's new in LA?). We eventually got some, but it took a while. With that said, I'd visit again and if I have to drive around the block four times, it's well worth it. I'd love to come back again and try more items from their menu.
Old school diner that doesn't seem to have changed that much since it opened in the 40s. They did add an outdoor patio during Covid A limited menu but everyone gets burgers anyway. They have Impossible burgers for our veggie friends The pies looked really good but we were full from the burgers and fries and IBC root beer
Such an iconic place! My friend told me about this place. She's been coming with her dad since 1947, and I love to counter seating, where you are nearly shoulder to shoulder with strangers, and people are friendly. The hamburgers are good (especially the hickoryburgers), and I didn't have a slice of pie but man, they are stacked!
When I tell you my son loved the pies …….he LOVED the pies. Unfortunately, I’m gluten-free, so I couldn’t taste them myself, but I got to live vicariously through my son (and my ex-husband), who were beyond happy. Watching them last night felt like pure joy …”Okay, let’s try this one… okay, now this one… okay, now this one!” It truly felt like the greatest Christmas ever. They did a full pie tasting: chocolate, pumpkin, apple, and banana. According to my son, every single one was delicious, but his final ranking was pumpkin first, chocolate second, with banana and apple close behind. He couldn’t stop talking about how good they were. Thank you so much for creating such amazing pies and such a memorable experience for my family. We’ll definitely be back soon! 🥧
The burgers were alright, a solid American-style burger, no complaints there. But honestly, wouldn't say it was the kind of burger that'd blow your socks off. Good honest tucker, but nothin' too out of the ordinary. Now, the coconut cream pie... that was a different kettle of fish altogether! Sweet as. But the real star of the show, the absolute ripper, was our server. Pretty sure her name was Rowen, and she was an absolute legend! Top-notch service, straight up. She really made the whole experience a good one.
This place has been on my list for years, and I must say that it is money well spent. The only seating here is the counter that surrounds the grill on three sides, so the larger your party, the harder it will be to find seats. While the staff do provide an amazing service and food, they also focus on quick customer turnaround so more people can sit. So be prepared to know what you want. The food is amazing from the steak burger to the fries to the banana cream pie that ties the whole thing together. This experience was all that I had hoped it to be and more. I look forward to coming back in the future.
A great place to stop for a burger, fries and pie! You will step back in time as soon as you walk in. Take a seat at the counter, someone will be with you shortly. You might need to wait for a spot, but we only waited a few minutes for 3 seats together. There is a take-out window and outside seating in the back if you didn’t want to wait. The burgers are excellent as were the fries. During busy times the servers and kitchen are working hard. The fries a plenty large enough to share. Burgers come out hot and wrapped, be ready to be a little messy. The pies are to die for.
The Baseline: For a Burger-joint the burgers, fries, and drinks are prepared well, done with properly applied ingredients that should taste good, and any unique offerings should not take away from the basis of the burger itself. The Apple Pan exceeds the baseline. Food: The Apple Pan has an original 1927 Burger prep that is time tested and true to this day. Bun, beef patty, steak burger sauce, and lettuce. It tastes good and the ingredients taste fresh. No Frills and is a solid burger. The fries are hot and crispy, which makes me want to order a double dose of them. The ice tea is brewed properly and tastes like tea. Finally the pie which you can add ice cream to but I went plain on. The crust is delicate and the apples are sauced and sweet baked to perfection. You cannot go wrong. Service: Straight forward service which is friendly and efficient. There are a limited number of seats that are first come and first served. If you get fries the staff will throw down a plate and squeeze your ketchup on the plate (love that nuance of this place). My tea was always refilled and I didn’t need to ask for anything because they know what they are doing here (been open since 1947). Ambiance: This is iconic Los Angeles that is worth trying at least once and if you love it then you will love it forever. Stepping in the restaurant is like stepping back in time and enjoying a pure part of Americana. First come first serve seats but worth it if you have to wait. Update: Had the hickory burger which is 5-stars
Been wanting to try this place out and I relish a good cheeseburger anytime. Coming from the hometown of The Billy Goat tavern, Au Cheval, and other temples to the cheeseborgee. . I knew I needed to taste this ravely reviewed establishment. We ordered a double Steak burger w extra cheddar, single Steak burger, Hickory w dbl cheddar cheese and grilled onions, 2 fries lightly abd medium finished, coconut pie and apple pie ala mode. We ordered ahead via the website, which allows many modifications to your burgers which i appreciate. The pies had their whipped cream and ice cream packaged separately and caramel sauce for the apple pie version. The fries were finished to specification, salt & pepper as well as ketchup cup provided. The burgers were hefty upon unwrapping and i knew they were going to be special. One bite in, tasting the real meat and Tillamook cheddar, the smell of the meat - was heaven. A carnivores delight. I can't even imagine eating a cheeseburger anywhere else. I wonder if they make their own burgers, as in grind their own meat, bec it tastes like it. This is not the spot for vegans, quite the opposite. Next up, the pie, coconut cream for me, apple for my partner. Scrumptious! The real whipped cream was a delight. I can undsrstand why this place has been in business to long. Serving mouth watering burgers and pies that would make Poppin Fresh and Bakers Square weep. The bill was $85 for all this w the burgers being abt $12 or so for a single. Well worth it for real food. Will definitely be back. One of the best cheeseburgers I ever had.
I will definitely be back. This place lived up to the hype and the food was fresh and delicious. Got the steak burger added cheese and the Pumpkin cream pie. The burger was well balanced and all the ingredients were fresh. The Pumpkin cream pie was not to sweet and covered in whip cream. The crowd was a good mix of locals and tourists. Make this place a priority.
The Apple Pan is a time machine. You step in and you're transported to a different time and a different place when quality meant something. They do everything the same way they have always done it. The menu is tiny but perfected. The pies sell out daily. There is only counter seating, first come first serve. The staff is great. I believe a lot of them have been working at the Apple Pan for a very long time, because by all accounts it's a quality company that treats employees well. I love that this burger joint exists. It makes me nostalgic for a time I never knew. And it's absolutely delicious.
Been wanting to pop by for years and finally did on a rainy Saturday night. Just walk in, sit at the counter, grab a menu and someone will come by and take your order. Lovely staff and a warm cozy feel. There's a takeout window outside too on the side of the building. We tried a hickory burger, steak burger, fries and some pecan pie w/ ice cream. The burgers where hot, delicious, and beefy, even as a single, and the hickory burger really had smoky hickory flavor making it stand out from something like In N Out or five guys.. I would skip the steak burger next time and get a couple hickory burgers. The fries where crispy and tasty, and perfect after a liberal sprinkle of salt from the shakers. Nothing special, but no notes. The pecan pie was the only pie available that night, but damn it was so sooo good... It seems like they may use maple syrup instead of just corn syrup in the pecan binder... The filling, the crust, the ice cream .. just perfection. I'm not really a sweets guy and I have found myself thinking about that pie the last few days. They have gone cashless, so bring a card, but go here! It's been around for something like 80 years for a good reason.
Comfy, rushed, old school, touristy and local all at the same time and that’s what makes it great. Stools change over quickly and the loyalists know to ask for their fries well done and order their sandwich lightly toasted. I had the tuna salad on rye. Generous amount of tuna which was a hint on the sweet side with lots of crunchy iceberg lettuce. Ice cold can of Sprite, ketchup squirted on a small plate and passed down the counter. We didn’t need to order the fries crispy but I also would have liked them that way. Slice of chocolate cream pie to go. Chatted to a few of our neighbors. At 7pm on a Wednesday night there was a steady flow - 4 seats empty and within minutes full back up. My Husband had the hickory burger and liked it. One time my friend ate here, sat next to a big time director - even shared some fries with him and didn’t know who it was until he left. That’s the beauty of LA, you just never know. Next time I’ll try the egg salad or grilled cheese.
Not only the best burger in L.A. - but maybe the best in the USA! And great throwback vibe! I went back to the Pan for the first time in years - and the hickory burger was awesome as usual! I used to go here in the 1980s on a regular basis, always for the hickory burger (best in LA), fries, a doctor pepper, and a slice of pie - and I have never been disappointed. One of the things I like best about the burger is grilled bun, crunchy fresh lettuce wedge, and the melting Tillamook cheddar. The apple pie a la mode can’t be beat, and the banana cream pie is still amazing! There are other burgers and sandwiches on the menu which I have heard are delicious - but I always get the hickory burger! Almost nothing has changed - even the same waiter - who still pours the ketchup for you! Two updates since the 80s - it used to be cash only, now cash is no longer accepted - only credit cards or e-pay, and it used to be closed on Mondays. Also, the paper cone drinking cups have been replaced with glasses. They’ve added outdoor seating in the back. The inside vibe is still like stepping into the 1950s and a nice blast from the past. Seating is limited, but if you arrive early enough before the lunch rush you won’t have to wait. You can find parking on the street - just be careful not to park in a no parking zone. Pro-tip: ask for your fries to be cooked crispy.
Probably the best burger I've had in a long time. The relish was awesome in the steak burger though it didn't taste like steak, seemed like regular burger. However the hickory sauce in the hickory burger literally gives vibes of old west cowboy smoke. Simply outstanding. The parking is horrible, but still worth visiting if you want an awesome burger. 💯
The one. The only. The Apple Pan. Where the only thing better than the burgers is the nostalgia. And the pie. The pie is undefeated. Service is outstanding, so sit inside at the counter; it’s worth the wait. This joint is a LA institution that has been at it for close to 80 years… and hopefully at least 80 more. The hickoryburger & banana cream pie are unforgettable. Prices are good. Food is excellent. Apple Pan hits the spot!
If you're looking to find the top 5 burgers in LA, Apple Pan is going to be on your list. It has influenced many other burger chains such as Johnny Rockets. If you're into local film trivia, it was also the original location of The Peach Pit from Beverly Hills 90210. Come for the delicious burgers and stay for the equally legendary pie.
Great burger, more umami flavor compared to the normal pink sauce style burger. Good fries and I had the strawberry pie which was just alright. Dad I missed the apple pie No parking but not hard to find something. service was quick and attentive. style was old school including a guy reading the newspaper, as to the ambiance.
The Apple pan is a classic staple LA eatery. The atmosphere is amazing, I can smell it just thinking about it. The burgers are to die for, but the real star is the tuna melt (recommend ordering on rye bread with cheese & grilled onions) - it’s life changing. The pie is divine, I love getting the seasonal flavors! Their staff is so nice, beware that seating is first come first serve!! *p.s. I recommend ordering the fries well done*
Love their burgers and fries and 1950's ambiance. However I think their apple pie is supreme, fresh, not overly sweet, just the best.

Great place for a long time. They can make your banana cream for sure. The apple pie is great too. Also the hamburgers rock.

Good little burger joint. Perfectly cooked and dressed. House hickory sauce has a nice sweetness to it. Fries were crispy and delicious and just needed a pinch more of salt. All items are A la carte . Took two pies home. Chocolate cream and coconut cream. Both are excellent. This place is an icon of the area. So drop by and show it some love if you are in the mood for a satisfying meal.
We got the Steakburger with double cheese (Our Original—1927) and the Grilled Cheese. The Grilled Cheese was phenomenal, nearly perfectly made. The burger was good but I’m not a relish guy and they had it in the sauce. Still good tho! Ate our food in the patio outside. We went on March 5th 2022 so it was a bit chilly. They ran out of heaters so that was the only downside to the experience.
I visited this quintessential LA burger establishment on a Wednesday, just before the bustling lunch hour. I was lucky to grab a seat at the bar, since I know it’s first come first seated. Service was quick and friendly by the man behind the bar, and my order was taken within minutes. My server promptly squirted ketchup from the bottle on a plate and placed it in front of me. Now That’s good service! I ordered the Hickory Burger with cheese, which arrived hot and fresh in just a few minutes. The burger was good, as expected, but to fully enjoy it, you really need to be a fan of the hickory sauce. There’s not much flair in the presentation—no plate, just the burger wrapped up with a few napkins. The strong hickory sauce overpowers the flavors of the meat, melted cheese, and bun, so if you’re hoping to savor those elements, you might be disappointed. The crisp iceberg lettuce overpowered the bite. With all the hype surrounding this place as one of the top-rated burger spots in LA, I was expecting more. While the burger was quick, fresh, and decent, it doesn’t quite live up to being in top 10 LA burger status. As for the fries, they were standard thick-cut fries, nothing to rave about—they could easily be mistaken for grocery store frozen fries. Apple Pie did look amazing and I will be back to try it, however I was full after this meal and could not find anymore room.
A tiny place with great food. It's a classic and almost feels like you're stepping back in time. The food is great, but the drink selection could be a little better. It's a counter only diner, so you have to wait till seats open up to get a spot. Not bad if it's not busy, but if it's packed, which it usually is for dinner, seating almost becomes a free for all and it's left to the customers to figure out. A+ burgers though, top notch!
Unique old fashioned hamburger joint with plenty of counter seating. Cons: French fries were undercooked and unseasoned. Too much lettuce on the burger. Small patties. Expensive. –2 Stars Pros: Excellent flavor on the Hickoryburger. Friendly and attentive service. Historic location. +1 Star I was still hungry after eating one Hickoryburger, so I ordered a second one to go. They really are delicious, just not very filling. While I'm happy to pay a premium for history, atmosphere, and great flavor, the price point at the Apple Pan is still too high. A double cheeseburger will run you $18, and a single can of Coke is $3.75! While I did enjoy my meal, the quality just didn't match the price.
This place is the definition of a time capsule — and I mean that in the best, ketchup-on-waxed-paper kind of way. The Apple Pan isn’t trying to impress you with Instagrammable nonsense or truffle aioli. It’s here to slap a perfectly griddled burger on a paper plate and say, “You’re welcome.” You sit at the counter like it’s 1947, because it is — they just never bothered to leave. The hickory burger? A smoky, saucy masterpiece. The fries? Hot, salty perfection, no fancy herbs, no apologies. And the pie — oh my God — the pie is what your grandma wishes she baked. That apple pie with a scoop of vanilla? That’s the real L.A. love story. The staff moves with the speed and energy of a team that knows they’ve been doing it better than everyone else for 75 years. No frills, no BS — just pure, greasy excellence. This isn’t dinner, it’s a pilgrimage. Five stars, no question. The Apple Pan isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a rite of passage.
I've had their burgers before and they are pretty good. This time, I went for the tuna sandwich as I'd heard it was supposed to be so great. It was good but nothing special, certainly not worth running back for. It's a pretty plain sandwich with piles of lettuce. For context, the best tuna sandwich I've had thus far is from Bay Cities.
Fun! I only eat beef 1-2 times a year, but when my brother wanted to go to Apple Pan, I decided to go for it. I wouldn’t say that the burger was out of this world, but it was yummy. More notable were the ambiance and experience of sitting at the counter. Service was friendly, and the pie was very good!
The burger is like a slightly better version of in-n-out, thicker patty, not too greasy, bun holds up well. Wish it came with tomato. Love their slightly thicker fries. Their apple pie was standard. Their service is so friendly and efficient. The atmosphere has a nostalgic touch that makes it special.
We got the hickory and the steak and tried one bite out of each other’s. I personally preferred the steak to my surprise as it’s less sweeter and tastes more like a burger. But I would return for their vibes alone. It feels just like as if you’re in a movie with counter top seating. Also get their banana cream pie !
The place was very casual and what you expect from a pie restaurant. The hickory burger was pretty solid, but had too much lettuce (easy to take out) and the fries were pretty mid. The food food would be a 3 stars for me, but the pies were easily a 5. For what it's worth, the cherry and apple pie slices were tasty and great quality. The size is pretty good too so it's not like the skimp out on portions. I'm not usually in this area and so I'm glad I checked it out, but definitely visit if you want good slice of pie.
First things first, the service is 11/10. Best service I’ve had in years, so hats off to that! The staff was very attentive, always filling up water, taking care of trash, and extremely friendly. They even drew a ketchup smiley face :) Food wise, I got the regular burger with fries and the banana cream pie. The burger was solid but a little heavy on the relish for my taste. Nothing out of this world but will satisfy your burger craving. I tried the banana cream pie because I was recommended it, and even though I don’t LOVE banana, it was yummy! My favorite item was the fries—hot and crispy! I’d love to come back and try the other pies.

Cool, orginal LA vibe. No AC, the place probably has never changed and that's what makes it great. Ham & cheese sandwich was huge. apple pie with ice cream a must.
Covid casualty. Missing their best pie by far: Boysenberry - bring it back. ASAP. Need to open counter service again. Like the outdoor seating, but inside is what made this place legend.

I hate being one of those “I don’t get all the good reviews” people, but that’s my exact thought after eating here. With so many 5 star reviews and write ups I was excited. The building is really cool and I appreciate the history but the food is mediocre at best. I liken the burger to what you make if you get ground beef at Vons, don’t season it, and put it on a bun with lettuce, tomato, cheese and pickle. No more, no less. Definitely not worth $10+ for a small cheeseburger. The fries are fine, they don’t come salted and they have a very thick “fried” crust to them. I tried 5 pies, banana was my favorite, pecan, cherry, and boysenberry were fine. I didn’t like the apple as it tasted sour. I unfortunately won’t recommend.
Start with the good. Lots of history and a fun place to hang out. Service was okay. One cashier was a little slow juggling the takeout orders. Grumpy guy at the back patio was awesome. The food was okay. Burger was good but not outstanding. Fries are frozen and came out cold. Apple pie was just okay. Kinda mushy and not a lot of flavour.
Apple pen has lost its luster. I’m sorry to say I’ve ate there twice a week for about 10 years. I haven’t been to that band in about five years since the new owners the food is good to a point but not like it used to be.
I've wanted to visit for a while ever since I saw The Apple Pan featured on Youtube, but after my meal I was kind of disappointed. - The steak burger was not bad - generous lettuce, mayo, relish sauce, quality cheese for a dollar more. The relish sauce was unusual and made the cheese harder to taste. - Fries were stale out of the fryer and unsalted, which probably means their fryer wasn't up to temp. Had a hard time getting through them. - Apple pie was really disappointing for me. It was really watery and soupy. The crust was also mealy and burned on the bottom. Ice cream just melted into the soup. - Service was great and the staff were very friendly. I liked the whole old Americana thing, but the lights were a bit dim and dark. In total, the whole meal ran me about $30 before tip. It is pretty expensive - at this rate I probably would have just gone to Five Guys for about the same price
Finally had a chance after a coworker raving about it. And noticing Google having high scores, so basically - the food is good quality - great bread, great quality meat, great fries, and there is the problem, this feels like burger were when they first started. And if u get the same quality ingredients, you can make these at home. Their sauce is unique- I'll give them that, but it not the best sauce either. You either like it or you don't. They're fries has absolutely no taste, but salt and pepper clears that up and some ketchup. And lastly they're pies, so for banana and chocolate cream pies, these unfortunately seem more like great tasting pudding on some pie crust. I've had way better. Now the pudding might taste better than maybe like the magnolia bakery - it doesn't taste as a pie.. but overall- ok place
This iconic restaurant opened its doors 77 years ago and is still going strong. My last time here was over 40 years ago. Other than changes in ownership the place itself looks much like I remember. From the limited counter seating, to the picnic tables in the back, this place still has visitors from around the world walking through its doors for a taste of history. Many staffers have worked here over 25 years. My server Jorge, a 30 year employee has seen changes over the years but he said what hasn't changed is the quality of the service and food. I ordered a Hickory Burger, a side of fries and a slice of Apple Pie. Unfortunately, everything was good not great and the pie lacked serious flavor. With that said, If you enjoy visiting iconic restaurants & venues rich in history this is definitely a place to see.
I finally stopped by to try this classic spot and since I was in the area back to back days, I figured I swing by each day to try all the items The Apple Pan is known for. First off, let me say the vibes are awesome here. Nostalgia has not left the building and the help of staff who have been around 30, 40, 50 years is pretty neat. The first day I stopped by I tried the Hickory burger with fries which was about $18. The hickory sauce is unique but I will say it's a bit overpowering, heavy on the ketchup and vinegar. It's not bad at all but it takes away from the burger. I also am not a big fan of the lettuce mountain stuffed inside the burger. BUT The burger itself is solid. Nice bun, juicy meat, fresh veggies, can't go wrong. Is it worth $10.25? I don't think so. The fries are great. Simple, crispy, and a good portion size. The second day I tried the Steak burger and Banana cream pie for about $20. I definitely prefer the steakburger. It has more of a classic burger feel and taste with a sauce that isn't overpowering or taking away from what this burger or any burger should be. The banana cream pie is awesome. Look at all those banans! Light layer of whipped cream and light layers of custard between the bananas, this is the way to go for banana lovers. On my last day I tried the not-so-secret tuna melt with a slice of apple pie for $24. The waiter also recommended grilled onion in the tuna melt so I went with it. Look, for $15, the sandwich is absurdly overpriced. The tuna itself is as basic as it gets with just mayo and relish. The bread is toasted nicely and it's cheesy, but what makes it better are those grilled onions. But even then, it's not really worth the price or anything special of a sandwich. The apple pie however was such a disappointment. It's soaking in that syrup/juice with mushy apples and the thinest pastry crust that is completely soggy on the bottom, and completely dry on top. Overall, The Apple Pan is a solid classic diner spot. The burgers are good but nothing to go crazy over. Other items are a hit or miss. It's also pricey for what it is. I don't mind paying $15+ for a burger in this economy but that burger needs to have the quality, taste, size, and sauces or flavors to match the price. I'm glad I tried it and that I was able to try it for a few days. But it's not a place that I would return to
I love the diner vibes. The burgers are mid though for the price. $10.25 for a steal burger, $1 extra for cheese, $5.75 for an extra patty, and $5 for fries. Kind of expensive imo. \n\nI love the U…

Shtick, pure unadulterated shtick. My hickory burger was just ok, served on a crappy little paper plate without silverware. Banana cream pie was excellent and served on a ceramic plate. Recommendation? Drive a few blocks south on Pico to Big Tomy’s for an amazing burger at half the price. Genuine article but no pie.
I found out about this place from TimeOut.com’s Top 20 restaurants in West LA. It seemed quaint and with the number of good reviews, I braved LA traffic to try it out. Unfortunately, everything was underwhelming and I left the restaurant perplexed about the many 5-star reviews. First, the burger ($10.25): There are only two options, the steakburger or hickoryburger, with the option of adding cheese for $1 and extra patty for $5.75. I opted for the hickory burger from the number of excellent reviews. The patty had good hickory flavor, but with only pickles and lettuce as toppings, the overall burger was underwhelming. Second, the fries ($5): It was fresh out of the fryer, and unsalted. There was salt on the counter so you can add salt to your liking. I appreciated this as I am watching my sodium intake. However, I thought the “basket” of fries were too small for $5. Third, the pie ($7.75): There are many pie options, but for the namesake, I opted for a slice of apple pie. I did appreciate that the apples seemed fresh and the pies were made in-house. Unfortunately, the taste was just mediocre. Overall, this was a disappointing experience and I would not recommend.
I saw the rating and being in the mood for apple pie i decided to try this place out.... The waiter was nice, and old school diner style, sat right away at the counter. That's where the good things end unfortunately. I saw some comments saying these were the best burgers ever, maybe these people have lost their taste buds. The burger was underwhelming, and for $11 it felt overpriced. I was really looking forward to the pie, and it was just disappointing. I felt I could have gotten a better deal at any chain restaurant or even McDonalds tbh. $16+tax+tip for a mediocre burger and small fries No fault to the staff they were alright.
What happened to my favorite hamburger joint? I’ve been coming to Apple Pan since the 80’s. I recently went on a Saturday to get my favorite hickory burger. To my surprise, the hamburger didn’t look the same anymore. They used to pride themselves on using the best part of the lettuce head. The hamburgers we got, all looked like crap! I used to enjoy that crunch of the lettuce, but didn’t have that crunch. Either it’s your workers or the new owners. Very disappointed. Not sure if I’ll ever go back. Not worth the price.
We loved this place the first time we ordered, so we tried it again and couldn't have been more disappointed. The hickory burger and fries tasted like they were old or had been sitting out all day, and the coconut cream pie tasted stale, worse than a Ralphs pie. We really liked this place the first time but given the quality control issues we won't be risking it again.
Burgers were terrible (ratio is bad, quality is bad, special sauces are horrendous) but the cherry on top was the service and experience. First we were served extremely overdone fries. They did replace our fries when we asked but they should not have served it in the first place as while we were looking around at other patrons, their fries were all properly done. Next, when they ordered dessert the server basically swiped our 75% unfinished fries without even asking, and we had to call him out to return our fries. Then, when the dessert came (Apple Pie and Banana Creme Pie), they were also absolutely atrocious. I have no idea how this place still exists with how bad every single aspect of this entire experience was.
Sorry, but this was a waste of time and money. My burger was pink, and the bun was soggy from the gigantic bundle of lettuce and oversaturated relish. It took 15+ minutes for them to cook my burger for only 2 minutes per side. And if the burger was disappointing, the apple pie was even worse…it’s almost like they rinsed the apples off before they placed them in a mediocre, dry crust. The only reason this place is open is because of history and bad taste palates’ recommendations from social media influencers. If you’ve ever traveled 10 minutes south, you’ll find a better burger at any mom-and-pop burger stand. The best thing was the canned soda.
I ordered the steak burger. It came with blood dripping everywhere. When I tried to get the waiter attention he shrugged me off. Finally my son spoke loudly and got him to redo the burger. It came a second time with raw meat. I left it there. The bill should have been reduced for that item and the other two my guests ordered which were only marginally better but it wasn’t. That is it for me.
I ordered from door dash, you don't find me posting a review. Even if I experience bad food. But this time a double burger from here kept me awake for an entire night. I had been throwing up all night and my throat and stomach have been burning and still feel it.... I don't know what happened to the old high-quality apple pan we all knew. But this was such a disappointment. I hope whoever you are, read this review and do something about your quality. You are ruining the legacy of this amazing place.
I was pretty disappointed with my visit. The fries were cooked well and had a nice texture, but they were very bland and lacked seasoning. The burger itself was a good size, but unfortunately the taste was not good at all — it just felt off and didn’t live up to the reputation this place has. Overall, the experience didn’t match the hype, especially considering how iconic this spot is supposed to be.
