Looking forward to visiting them at their new location starting in January 2026, God willing. Something out of the ordinary and truly delicious. Congratulations on the concept!
In my very personal opinion, it's a place to try new things and delicious flavors, with traditional ingredients. I don't think it's a place to go for lunch if you're fasting for two days. 😁
Hñähñú offers a showcase of the cuisine and local ingredients of the Mezquital Valley, a semi-desert region in the state of Hidalgo where it's essential to make the most of everything the environment provides. Chef Juan is an expert at transforming his ingredients into experiences that encompass different aspects of the local flora and fauna. This is perfectly complemented by the selection of original cocktails and drinks prepared at the bar. Arriving at this restaurant is a magical experience, as it's located in a place where you wouldn't imagine there's an award-winning restaurant, recognized as one of the best in Mexico. It's an ideal spot for foodies passing through the area. There are seasonal menus, so each dining experience will likely be different depending on when you visit.
It was one of the best culinary experiences we've had. The dishes are delicious, original, and prepared with local ingredients. Chef Juan Antonio Rodríguez explained the preparation of each dish to us. It's worth taking the time to enjoy the food and support local producers.
It honestly exceeded all our expectations. It's an experience that transports you to the past and present of the Mezquita Valley's gastronomy, a fusion of flavors that will delight even the most discerning palate. It's something to brag about.
An incredible experience at a bargain price (Sept. 2022, $600 for a 10-course tasting menu, cocktails starting at $120 on the event menu). It's food made with highly specific ingredients from the region (Mezquital Valley, within the state of Hidalgo) and a superbly refined technique. The level of ingredient handling is astonishing, with fermentation and nixtamalization techniques. The menu changes seasonally, in addition to seasonal events held on certain dates. Despite the unusual nature of some ingredients, the delicious flavor of each dish makes it very accessible, except perhaps for the truly picky eateries (like any good prix fixe, it's not for everyone). Reservations are necessary, and attending is a must if you're near Mixquiahuala. That said, the trip to the restaurant (and to enjoy the region's barbacoa the following day and do some sightseeing) is worthwhile in itself.
Celebrating the culinary culture of the Otomi people, Hñahñu Restaurant showcases the Mezquital Valley as a prime example of culinary culture and tradition. Chefs Cintia and Juan Antonio demonstrate that ancestral culinary techniques and gourmet gastronomy can coexist and merge to deliver history, flavor, and tradition in every dish. Located in the heart of Mixquiahuala, Hidalgo, in this simple yet inviting space, the chefs, committed to their roots and heritage, will present a seasonal menu where each dish embodies culture from its name to its ingredients. Mesquite, nopales (prickly pear cactus), alberjones (Peruvian white beans), garambullo (a type of cactus fruit), mandarin oranges, mushrooms, and even the occasional insect will be the main ingredients of your flavor festival… Visit them and nourish your soul!
A tasting of very different food, very good flavor and service
A great discovery of Mexican haute cuisine and the best thing is that it is made with 100% Hidalgo ingredients. I would call it signature Otomi cuisine, combining flavors and tradition....highly recommended. I came from Pachuca to try it.
A marvel of flavors, the service is fabulous. Thank you for the experience.
The place is small, but it's worth mentioning that their dishes are delicious! However, keep in mind that the prices are a bit high if you want to do the full tasting.
The service was incredibly slow. There were about 12 of us when we arrived, and there was only one girl working. The chef arrived almost two hours after we did, so the food took ages to be prepared. We were left hungry, and the portions were extremely small; everything looked like snacks.
I didn't like it at all. It's horrible that they have the bathroom vent next to their table and therefore the whole establishment smells like a bathroom.
