Went with a local to Gus's. Was my first time there. We weren't super hungry so we got the wrapped shrimp and potato cakes. Bot were excellent. Interestingly, the potato cakes come with applesauce. Surprisingly good combination. The potato cakes are huge which is why you have a choice of one or two. The shrimp were good and I like the horseradish dipping sauce. They have several German dishes. I.plan on going back to try/split a few entrees. I LOVE that it is a family run business going back to the owners great grandparents. The decor is the same as ut had always been with the exception of seating. The owner, Lauren took care of us, was super friendly... made me feel at home. Definitely go to Gus's for good food and being a part of history
Love this restaurant, make a reservation for your beautiful prime rib.
One of the best finds in the area- our friend brought us here and the food, services and drink selection was outstanding. We sat at the bar to enjoy meeting people and it was the best! Highly recommend ❤️
Always a good time and food is great. Old school feeling which I love about the place.
Genuinely some of the best food I’ve had in the Hudson Valley. We had a duck special and it was ACTUALLY the best duck I’ve ever had.
I do love German food! I had the Jager SchnitzelI, the sauce with mushrooms and onions was made nicely, along with the red cabbage. The staff and the environment were welcoming, and gave the warm family feeling that we all love.. Furthermore my husband had the porterhouse steak which is few and in-between to find in regular local places. I must say it was absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. Gus's food is definitely worth eating again. Kudos to a place that has been around since 1934! 👏
Very good german food. I've driven by many times while in the area and finally stopped in for lunch. I ordered schnitzel and a side of potato pancake. The schnitzel was thin and cripy and was the percfect size for lunch. They substituted the side for me with spatzle, which were great, the red cabbage was also very good. The potato pancake was large and was also nice and crispy. I will definetly be back again.
Highly recommend the house made bratwurst! Though I ordered a mix just to sample what they had, hands down theirs won the prize. Their mustard is house made too! What a treat! Lobster bisque was the soup of the day, and since it was my first time there, I had to have it. Wow! Flavorful and definitely made with real lobster (I even caught some shell in there so I know it was genuine. Thumbs up) A great meal after a decent hike in the gunks. Recommended.
Absolutely amazing experience and incredible authentic German food. I’d have to say my favorite was the German potato salad and their bratwurst!! The rye bread is also their original recipe dating back to the 30s and it’s SO ridiculously good. Amazing atmosphere and German decorations, super nice owner and their dog Chloe was the best! 12/10 will be back again.
My wife is German from Wiesbaden Germany. We travel often and always seek to find good German Food. We were really surprised when we stopped for lunch at Gus's. The food, beverage, and hospitality were wonderful. We will definitely be back and highly recommend this establishment for great German Food, great service, and very warm hospitality.
Went there for birthday lunch with my daughter. Food was excellent we especially liked the smoked salmon appetizer. Schnitzel, red cabbage and potato pancakes good too. The very nice waitress heard us talking about my birthday. She brought a dish of ice cream with a candle at the end of our meal. Very enjoyable.
Food was pretty good. We ordered escargot $17 and a German pancake $7 for an appetizer and the duck $32 and Jager schnitzel $30. The escargot was not great. The German pancake with applesauce was delicious. The duck was absolutely delicious. The flavor was amazing. The veal jager Schnitzel was okay. I was literally looking forward to a mushroom cream sauce and that's not what was given. They did have great beers on tap including an Spartan Octoberfest beer. We went way out of our way to stop at this restaurant. Probably wouldn't do it again. But it's hard to find good German food. If you are driving bye make the stop.
The Spatan Octoberfest on tap was ice cold. The blue cheese on the salad was very creamy. The rye bread was very fresh. Mashed potatoes were fluffy. Red cabbage was tender. Schnitzel was crispy. $21.95 for the pork schnitzel dinner. $25.95 for the veal schnitzel dinner. Our waitress, Debbie, was very nice and did not rush us. Will be back.
Has that local tavern feel which was cool. The beer was nice and cold…the bread was fantastic. Rest of the food was, well…terrible. Schnitzel was almost paper thin, no seasoning and super dry. Instant, yes, Luke warm instant mashed potatoes and literally a table spoon of gravy on it..cabbage tasted processed - too sweet. Our other meal was bad too - corned beef tasted off and most of it wasn’t finished.
We were so looking forward to our visit but from the moment we arrived our excitement bubble was deflated. This experience was so bad we actually thought we were part of a candid camera skit. Arrived and greeted, ‘reservation hun’? (That was the first of probably a dozen times I was referred to as hun or honey). I said no, she turned to the other waitress and started discussing. We stood there not knowing if we needed one to sit, mind you, there were just two other tables. I asked if we needed one and she said no, we are just trying to figure out where to sit you so we said we would sit at the bar ~ huge mistake, should have walked out then and there. My husband asked what draft beer they had, waitress said none as cooler was broken, she proceeded to ramble on how she misses it as it acted as a shelf. We placed our order for pancakes, pierogies and eggplant napoleon. As we waited for our food the two waitresses were discussing the drinking habits of a reserved table that was due in, just seemed so unprofessional. Waitress had given us share plates and silverware but came by with two more share plates, when the food came out I had to push the abundance of share plates out of the way to make room. As we were eating our food, a gentleman came out of the kitchen and started arguing with the other waitress, from the way everybody was speaking to each other all I can assume is that they were related. We asked for the check so we could leave. To add insult to injury, the food wasn’t that good and very overpriced ~ potato pancakes were soggy, no crispness or seasoning, pierogies again, no taste but the kraut was nice, eggplant was nice but very greasy. 3% service fee added to check, I assume because it was card but nobody said that to us. An hour and $100 we will never get back for this most awful experience.
