What a good cafe with a beautiful view. It’s a bit out of town but only a short bus ride away. I strongly recommend a booking as even in the off season there were people waiting for a table. My wife booked us the window seat and it was the best in the house. You can watch the ocean and sea birds go by while you eat. I recommend the soft shell crab bahn mi. It has bold pickle and spicy flavors.
Back again. Booked, but after a long drive and delays were late. Called to notify and cafe offered to keep kitchen open a few more minutes to accommodate us for hot food. Service and food were excellent, delicious and good value. Some simple recipes, others more adventurous and all done better than I've had anywhere else. View over the sea is something very special, facilities and atmosphere all well kept and well considered.
This is a cute little cafe with views that are hard to beat. The windows are tall and really opens up the views. We had a sweet potato burger and a salmon & shrimp sandwich. My Sweet Potato burger was delicious and the portion was huge. We made a reservation with only a few days notice and had brunch. So book well ahead of time.
An unforgettable breakfast with a breathtaking view! I took my wife to Drift for a breakfast date last Saturday, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences we’ve ever had. At first, I was a bit surprised to see the restaurant built from a few shipping containers perched on the edge of the cliffs — but the moment we stepped inside, I was absolutely amazed. The panoramic sea view is simply stunning! We were lucky to have a table facing the water, and it created the most romantic atmosphere — perfect for a quiet breakfast date with my wife. ❤️ We both had The Drift Breakfast, and it was outstanding — beautifully cooked, full of flavour, and presented with real care. Every detail, from the food to the service, made us feel welcome and relaxed. My wife was so pleased, and I could tell she truly enjoyed the morning as much as I did. If you’re visiting North Berwick, Drift is an absolute must — the view, the food, and the peaceful setting make it an unforgettable experience. I even took a few pictures to remember the moment — that’s how special it was! Highly recommended. 🌊☕🍳
Myself and my sister visited Drift Cafe after seeing it on Instagram. It did not disappoint. The entire surroundings are absolutely breathtaking. Like something out of a film. We felt we were a million miles from our stresses and worries. We noticed a sauna on site which we’d definitely try in future. There are also little benches which would be perfect for taking in the scenery. The cafe itself was busy which we expected but we were still able to get seated. It was clear that most people are keen to take a window seat given how stunning the views are. The staff were so lovely and very welcoming, making us feel right at home. We arrived after 3pm so were unable to get hot food. However, we had a coffee and cake. The coffee was really nice and the cake was delicious and the portion was big. We even took another two away with us! The types of cakes on offer included combinations like cinnamon and plum, orange and blackberry, so not your usual plain cakes. I really loved the fact that the menu was so vast and it appeared to have seasonal touches too, making this cafe even more special. There’s no wifi but we loved the little sign suggesting you talk to one another as was the case before wifi was around! Neither of us wanted to leave and we felt totally calm and at peace there. We noticed they have some items for sale such as candles, jams and books plus a map of Scotland and a guide of the surrounding areas which was a lovely added touch. It definitely seemed the type of place you’d want to explore and the cafes location is perfect. It’s the kind of place you’d enjoy visiting in all types of weathers. We love quaint scenic cafes, especially coastal ones, and this one was magnificent! We can’t wait to come back again and have already recommended it to our friends and family.
Make sure you book!! Always busy and rightfully so!! Great Scottish breakfast, not the cheapest but one of the best. Stunning views. The team in their work so hard and the service was excellent. We have been a few times and can highly recommence
Wonderful café with delicious food and cozy atmosphere!! The view is fantastic! I loved it 😍 ❤️
The Beef Brisket meal was fabulous. Everything was. We weren’t able to book as last minute and had to queue for 40 mins but so worth it. View amazing too.
Doggy friendly outside, plenty of benches with breathtaking view. Staff are so friendly, welcoming and helpful and food, coffees and hot chocolate were delicious.
This isn't my first visit, but everything about the place makes it worth the two and a bit hour drive from Newcastle. On this visit I had the salmon poke bowl which had generous cubes of smoked salmon rather than the usual sliced salmon which gave a totally different flavour and texture. The service was great as was the atmosphere and the view.
This was my second time by Drift, first was in February 2020. Now the weather was absolutely beautiful, so we could enjoy the delicious coffee and cake just out side. Place with an amazing view. The big windows inside give you the opportunity to look at the see while sipping your coffee in super cosy atmosphere during the cold days.
Went this morning for my birthday with my wife, stunning views, great service, probably the best breakfast I’ve had.
What a vibe!!! So chilled and beautiful place to sit and relax. The staff was really nice! We didn’t book a table (best to book) but they managed to find us a table and changed us a bigger table when it got available. The food was amazing! Reuben sandwiches. Yum!!! Be mindful that sitting outside has a different menu, but still looks a big menu to choose from. Afterwards, we walked for an hour along the coast to get back to North Berwick. So for those who want to come without a car, feel free to take bus 120 or walk.
Amazing view, very accommodating to gluten free and dairy free dietary requirement. They have clear labelling on the menu and dedicated gluten free fryer.
Great cakes and even better views. Lovely selection of baking. In a beautiful location just outside of North Berwick. Think it would be beautiful even on a stormy day. Didn’t get to try the breakfasts + lunch but it looked fab getting taken past
Lovely on a sunny day. We had no booking but outside tables were available. The chips and the fish were truly incredible. Thank you chef!
We had the cake and coffee outside with our - dog- as dogs are not allowed inside the restaurant. Lady outside at refreshment van was very friendly - where we had our coffee and cake. Was amazing views.
Amazing location with absolutely stunning views of the sea and the beach. Food was nice, made from locally sourced products and the staff were very friendly and the service was quick. I feel like there were a couple of areas of improvement with the food, for example the eggs and salmon was (in my opinion) too heavy on the salmon and not enough poached egg (only one) and the crushed edamame could have been better seasoned to lift them, and perhaps some lemon. However I am nit picking!!! The place really is super and worth a visit!
Update(1 year later): It's 5 stars from me now. Well done on the te for offering hot food like pulled pork burger which was delicious. Not too salty with appropriate sides, their food was perfect. The cakes were also better than the last time I reviewed. I think they are improving and would like to see what they have next. Update (7 months later): Revisited after restrictions were eased. It is still an amazing cafe with stunning views. The staff were calm, efficient and the service has overall improved! 4 chocolate Guiness cakes for £10 was a great deal but have to leave it at 4 stars because the muffin-like cakes were drier and not as delectable than the previous tray bake recipe. A lovely cafe with some of the most amazing views. You can get fresh and delicious food with seating available inside and outside. We really liked it but gave 4 stars because the service was bit stressed and not too much space inside (the owner clarified that was to ensure every table gets nice sea views). I would recommend stopping by if you're driving and grab something to drink and eat.
The Family met up here a have lunch. It's situated on the Coastline, with amazing views! Food and the atmosphere is really good. The Guiness Chocolate cake is something else...truly scrumptious
This place is absolutely stunning. We didn’t make a booking but we waited about 20 minutes and we’re able to get a table, the staff were so polite and friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. The food was INCREDIBLE and so well priced, we even got cakes to take away. Stunning location and gorgeous views, amazing food, couldn’t ask for more. Will definitely make a booking next time as it is super busy and I’d hate to risk not getting a table because it really is a unique dining experience. We will be back!
We’ve heard about Drift for months now. We wanted to visit for a while now. The first thing that I can say... It worth the drive! The Drift has a very special spot and offers breathtaking views. The 40-minute drive is definitely worth it. This little hidden gem is located next to the castle 🏰. You can enjoy light bites and breakfast/brunch until 3pm. They also offer a great selection of freshly made cakes. We enjoy a slice of the chocolate cake and the almond & cherry cake, both delicious. The coffee was great. You’ve got a few indoors tables - all with panoramic view - and a few tables outside if you want to sunbath but be prepared for the wind 💨 🥰. The cafe is one of the best spots to admire Bass Rock 🗿 I highly recommend this place and we’ll definitely come back.
Situated at the edge of the cliff top that provides breathtaking views of the Bass Rock, the cafe offers a lovely selection of brunch, lunch and desserts. While seating is limited, it's a must-visit spot in North Berwick. Reservations are highly recommended!
Easily 5 stars! Cosy place with amazing view to the sea and to the nearby beaches. The food was very tasty, although a bit pricey, and the service was great with staff being very friendly and efficient. Plenty of space outside for parking your car too.
Fantastic views and great food. Didn’t have quite what I was after on the menu but the staff were very flexible to change a dish to make it suit! Very much appreciated
Fantastic place to dine and enjoy the stunning view out to The Bass Rock. It does get busy so recommend you book. An early morning breakfast is a true delight in this magical place
Fascinating brunch/bistro cafe built with metal containers next to a cliff. Cozy atmosphere based on cushions, wood and pastel tones. Impressive views of the shore and Bass rock island. Large array of rolls including some vegan options, good selection of Scottish classic dishes including saumon, haddock and British pies. Gets really busy at peak hours, booking in advance is a must. Free parking outside. It has some tables on the terrace, where it can get extremely windy.
Fabulous place, great food served very quickly. Very friendly, helpful staff. My husband has Coeliac Disease and he was catered for very well. The views were beautiful. I would highly recommend this quirky, remarkable place.
Absolutely love Drift, we’ve always just cycled & stopped for coffee & cake but stayed for lunch yesterday & came back for breakfast this morning, I thought the chowder was amazing then I had maple carrots today, stunning dishes great service and well that view! Very special. Thank you team drift :)
Unexpected find on our road trip, absolutely wonderful staff who made a plan. The coffee and Chocolate Guinness Cake was outstanding. The views are to die for. A must visit!!
Fantastic location! Great food! Dog friendly! One thing I think could be better is the advertising on the road side shown in my pictures. If it wasn't for Google maps I wouldn't know Drift was a cafe. Beautiful place!
Very busy. We hadn't booked but they are happy to serve takeout and you can sit on the picnic benches outside and enjoy the wonderful views. Excellent coffee. Plenty of free parking.
The views were incredible and The staff were extremely polite. we both had soup and a cake was lovely and homemade!! A must stop if you’re passing through on the way to Edinburgh!! Try book a table if you can pre hand.
Beautiful location and views while you eat. Breakfast was great quality and very tasty. Had to sample coffee and cake too and was not disappointed. Staff were lovely and will definitely be back again. Booking is recommended as its a busy wee place.
This was our first visit to Drift. My family and I were staying nearby for a short break and Drift was recommended to me by a friend that lives locally. I booked a table in advance and although the floor to ceiling window seats weren't showing as available I requested one if there happened to be a cancellation or any way to accommodate this. We were made welcome on arrival and delighted that we got a table with floor to ceiling window/views. The food was piping hot, tasty, generous and beautifully cooked. Our server was very friendly and even asked the kitchen staff how to make the best poached eggs for my hubby who has been trying to master this for ages! Then we had cake! I'm not sure who creates these culinary masterpieces but all were spectacular. Toffee apple, chocolate and Guinness, plum and cinnamon, carrot cake etc. I love that these are proper home made cakes not mass produced, tasteless disappointments. I'm not sure why anyone would leave a negative review of this wee gem. Absolutely stunning location especially when the sun was out. Nowhere matches Scotland in the sunshine. I will say definitely book in advance so you're not disappointed as it is busy due to popularity! So be organised. We will definitely return. Thanks to you all for your hard work ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great experience here yesterday morning for breakfast. Service was superb and very friendly but the food surpassed it. Was really really tasty and lovely coffee too. We got the train from Edinburgh to North Berwick and then walked out to Drift. We were both so glad that we did as everything was excellent
No food taken but menu looks goid. Busy on Sunday lunchtime - booking essential i would say. Great views and coastal walking g opportunities. Sauna looks like fun!! Next time!!
Lovely atmosphere and fabulous view. The food was kinda okay, nothing great to be honest but the service was lovely. Definitely worth the visit for the view, I would go again and try out their drinks next time! Book in advance to get a nice window seat.
Incredible location✨ You might not read anything else - just visit here because of the place. Also I like that the menu is so different and I can feel they cook with 💕 love Whenever the Panko Fried Chicken BonSam rice was difficult to finish. Rice just flooded in sauce and radish smells too strong🤪 While Salmon salad was really delicious with big smoked prices of salmon 🥰
hi just called for coffee and cake. Been here before. solo lady. On arrival lots empty tables with fab views. However waitress said that's a single table you've to sit there!! small table with fixed seats back to the glorious view outside. nobody arrived at empty tables. I grabbed a spare chair and positioned so I too could enjoy the view!! scone and coffee lovely! view to die for but single lady not allowed table with a view!! I did comment to older waitress! So solo visitors be warned can't have table with a view offered to every other people who arrived off speck! marred my visit today!! been 3 times before this year when in the area!!!
The views and location of this cafe are incredible - could spend hours looking out to the sea. The food was quite good, the French toast was definitely better than the omelette though. Coffee and cakes were great - would return for these but probably not for lunch. The service was however a bit abrupt - we felt a bit like we were bothering the staff by asking for salt/pepper etc. Could definitely be warmer!
The food was ok. They were busy but my veggie breakfast came out as a meat one and not that great. Cakes were nice. Great spot, which saves it I guess
Horrible food but Great to have a scone and tea/coffee , Waitress could smile more but they were nice !!! We ordered chips and french toast, bacon u get only fat and full of oil everything . But view is stunning. Overpriced tho !!!
Looks a great place to stop with great views but we didn't stop for a drink or anything as they said they were fully booked. I asked about the 2 empty tables, only to be told they were reserved. I asked when were they reserved and the time the girl gave me was over half an hour later so we would have had time to have a coffee but she wouldn't let us sit at either of the 2 tables.
I was recommended to try this but I didn't get my coffee and breakfast as I was on my own and could only be given a table in the center of the room even though the place was half empty. Unwelcoming, made me sad perhaps they might consider why someone is on there own and be more friendly. Not curt and dismissive. I won't ever go back, they obviously have no interest in my custom. I went for a view of the sea elsewhere
1 Star – Uncomfortable, Unwelcoming, and Poor Service My visit to this café was deeply disappointing, not just because of the subpar food and drinks, but because of the openly uncomfortable and unwelcoming atmosphere my family and I faced as Asian customers. The stares from staff and other patrons made us feel like aliens—like people of color were some kind of novelty they couldn’t comprehend. The owner couldn’t even muster a smile while serving us, and the overall energy was hostile, as if they couldn’t wait for us to leave. The only person who showed basic decency was one woman at the till, though even that felt like a forced front. The terrible service might’ve been slightly forgiven if the food and drinks were good, but they weren’t. The "hot" latte was lukewarm, and the tortilla with salmon was barely warmed, dry, and hard with no poach egg as stated on the menu. The hot chocolates were just glorified milk! And to add insult to injury—you have a chai latte on your menu, a drink rooted in our culture, yet you couldn’t extend even the most basic respect or hospitality to us. If you can’t treat customers with dignity, you have no business offering items tied to their heritage. We left feeling humiliated and out of place. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone, especially people of colour who deserve to dine somewhere they’re actually welcome. Save your money and go to an establishment that values all customers equally.
I don't normally leave reviews, however I felt I needed to on this occasion. We purchased some fries and coffees etc for the family (family of five, spent £35) from the outdoor food trucks. The fries are delicious, however the portions are terrible, we had 2 x £4.50 regular fries and 1 x portion of garlic/cheese fries. The £4.50 fries were tiny, actually can't believe they are charging that much for such a small portion. You can see the regular fries in the round tub in our picture before we started eating them! Our kids were gutted, didn't help seeing other people later with much bigger portions. Anyway, cool place ‐ just don't order fries!!
Terrible customer service twice. The latest highlight was the following: I entered the shop asked if they serve food and received a positive response. I asked for the food options and was sent outside to look at the menu. 1 minute later I re-entered and was told that the kitchen just closed. Amazing views but wouldn't go back.
Incredibly disappointed at our most recent visit to Drift, which was actually supposed to be an anniversary treat. We arrived to be told no hot food due to the dishwasher having broken(?!), however we could have cake in a takeaway container. This was booked for a late lunch, so unfortunately the scone didn't quite cut it. We were booked for 2.30, and would have appreciated at least a heads up so that we could have chosen an alternative location for an actual meal having travelled a not insignificant distance. Disappointing that they didn't even offer a reduced menu e.g. soup or a bacon roll, in takeaway cups/containers to pre booked tables. I do my best to support local being from the farming community, however the way in which Drift dealt with their unfortunate circumstances today have lost them a customer. We understand they had the same issues with the dishwasher the previous day, however I fail to see how a broken dishwasher means that hot food cannot be made.
Upon arrival, we did not receive a warm welcome. The service was poor, and the staff member who served us was unprofessional and discourteous. Although we were seated indoors, the area was extremely cold. Several of the chairs were made of metal and lacked cushions, making them uncomfortable to sit on.
