Couldn’t be happier! On a whim tried it out with my wife, and it was fantastic. The tacos were fresh and amazing. The ahi tuna BLT was perfect, fresh and rare. It was so good we brought our kids a week later, who loved the atmosphere and food. The service is great also, both times they went above and beyond, and even got my little kids orders rushed through. Will be back many more times!
For a first time customer, we thought it was a great experience. I feel like the bad reviews are people who are expecting a 5-star restaurant experience, which this isnt. The food was great, and the portions were huge. Im a big guy, and I literally filled up on the appetizer. The prices are also insanely fair for the amount and location. We will definitely be back.
Excellent food - haven't had a bad taco yet. Fries and nachos are great appetizers. Their relationship with Harbor Head Brewing Company as well as their raw bar/outside seating makes the long waiting times for a table go by quickly since you can drink beer and relax outside.
great tacos! the wait was long but it seem to be worth it. The view was great and we had some appetizer french fries they were very very very good! and then we had the tray of tacos which were excellent, Korean barbecue was my favorite maui chicken was delicious Pork was great but I keep thinking about that Korean taco oh my god I’ll definitely be coming back
My family was first time here last long weekend where it was beyond our expectation. We had three appetizers which were very yummy and filled up our stomach half way full. We barely finished our yummy tacos too.👍
Very cool little wedding venue and they had good food!
Great atmosphere and yummy food. The manager, Anna, is always very friendly and helpful. Happy to see there are more vegetarian options now. We’ve also taken our friend with celiac disease and they were able to accommodate her gluten free needs, with no fear of cross contamination. Dog friendly always a plus!
Melina was our server and she was so sweet and pleasant. Highly recommend going to whales tale especially if Melina is your server.
This is usually a busy location and has a unique setting. You have to be on the waitresses and waiters if you want prompt service due to the large attendance. Has a great taco Tuesday. And a good selection at the bar. Come hungry and don't be shy, wave your arms if you need service..
PRIVATE PARTIE review! Our company hosted our annual holiday party at Whales Tale this year. From the start we were connected with Elise who runs catering and she was amazing, quick to answer and had things set up for us right away! She was amazing to work with from beginning to end. The party room is beautiful right on the water, the food was great and staff was amazing as well. We had Elise and Joe and they both were so accommodating, helpful and happy throughout the whole night. We had a blast and recommend to anyone thinking about this venue to host an event of party, definitely give it a go it will not disappoint! Will use them in the future for sure.
Was great, stopped by after Vanderbilt Planetarium thursday, half off appetizers. Food was awesome! My 3yr old son kept asking for a pink drink, the server was so cool even though they didn’t sell anything like it, went and figured out a way to put a-little grenadine in a glass of water to make the kids day. Bill was under $40, threw $60 on the counter and will be back again due to the server.
We love this place. I can’t get enough of it ! Hahaha. We came over the weekend. We only had to wait 25 minutes. We were a party of 8. Greeted immediately. Our drinks were strong and delicious .. we ordered a bunch of apps. Wings are a must here. My wife and I shared the mussels. And then we all had tacos and a couple burgers. My favorite taco is the Maui ! Must have. I recommend this place to everyone I know
My sister suggested this place for my best friends birthday dinner and I'm so happy she did. We went Sunday evening and the wait was an hour, my sister warned the wait times are long but it was absolutely worth the hour wait. We got a drink at their Brewery across the way, I think it was a strawberry lemonade which was delicious. For an appetizer we ordered the queso blanco and it was so good I wanted to drink the cheese. I ordered 4 tacos: Maui Chicken, Fillet Mignon, Bang Shrimp Taco & Baja Pork. Of the 4 all were amazing except the Fillet Mignon. I thought I would like it but the tomato sauce killed it for me. Baja Pork is definitely a winner. We all got drinks as well, my sister and I ordered the Rum Punch and Bestie ordered the Pomegranate Margarita, all made well. Service was really good and food turn around times weren't that bad which was nice given how busy they were. I truly can't wait to go back. This is the view from our table, nice way to watch the sunset. Great company, food, drinks and weather, can't beat that.
My absolute favorite place on the north shore of Long Island. I have been here so many times and each time has been AMAZING. The staff is always friendly.. the beer selection is great, the food is YUM.. and the view is OUTSTANDING! Last night I purchased my first t-shirt & I’ll be wearing it proudly. If you haven’t checked this place out- go for it! You’ll be so glad you made it there ☀️
My go to taco spot! Been coming here for years and they’ve never disappointed. Except when they got rid of the large taco tray with the smaller tacos & I just hope more people don’t figure out about it. The waits getting a bit crazy! Just kidding, this place is great. Summer evenings here are always a blast. Amazing food, great drinks and a nice atmosphere! Be sure to try the street fries! Highly recommended!
Wonderful place to relax with a great meal and a cocktail while enjoying the beautiful views of the water and boats in the marina.
To bad they are closing their doors this weekend, something about the marina wanting the space. This was a GREAT place for lunch or dinner .
Had an awesome time here! The view was killer, service was top-notch, and the food? Seriously good eats. Everything we tried hit the spot. Definitely planning to come back. Our waitress was on point, super friendly, and always there when we needed her. Totally recommend it!
This spot is under rated- very tasty food, good portions + great service and ambiance. We’ve there several times, good spot for a solid happy hour - plenty of food and drinks. Well priced. While you may have to wait for a table- they’re associated the the brewery right across the property so you can have a drink while waiting for a table. Keep up the good work! -Roberto
The food was great and experience was a 10/10. Sam was the best server - so funny and always checked up on us!
I had a phenomenal time with my family here at the Whales Tale. The Bang Bang Shrimp appetizer was really really great. For my entree, I ordered the Surf and Turf Tacos, they were delicious! The staff was incredibly friendly, especially Luke. Luke seated us in our preferred area and he was a charm to be around! I will definitely be coming here again with friends and family!
Everything was great. Thanks to our waiter Rose who made some great food suggestions. She was super friendly and great.
Great vibe and atmosphere. Cool that it over looks the marina. All their tacos are extraordinary. Plus the mix drinks in particular the rocket fuel get you feeling nice. Just make sure you have patience to wait to get in unless you make reservations because on a beautiful weekend summer day you will wait. But the waiting is okay cause put your name on waiting list and go across the small parking lot roadway to the Head Of the Harbor brewery ( another cool place) and grab some good tasting brews to kill the time.
The tacos were delicious! I got the filet and chicken tacos. The staff was very attentive and sweet. They are young ladies doing the best they can and they were great! The view spectacular! We figured if we went a little early for dinner around 5pm on Saturday we wouldn’t have to wait long, instead we didn’t wait at all! We had beautiful weather too. It was a nice summery thing to do. Highly recommend!!
Was there on a Sunday afternoon. Located in a Marina. We ate alfresco. Beautiful views. Mexican food 🥑 and Margaritas just perfect. Shared the loaded nachos! So much food ! The Waitress was so friendly.
The whole experience was wonderful.. From the view.. to the amazing service.. To the delicious food.. very delicious food. You must go to Whales Tale to get a bite to eat or just to get out of the house. Trust me... You will be very happy. Plus they introduced me to guacamole.. something that always grossed me out. And now I love it.
Outstanding taco options, ontop of friendly staff, and perfectly balanced margaritas. The korean steak taco may have been the single greatest taco experience I've had. Perfect spot, great atmosphere. Parking situation can be tricky, but get here early and you will not be disappointed.
Rose was great! Great service and overall great experience! We had a blast and she was very attentive. We had a 10/10 experience. She made our time here very fun and enjoyable. Great server!
Drinks & tacos were both amazing!!! My favorites are the Maui chicken and filet tacos! Our server Rose was incredible and so so accommodating! Highly reccomend
Melina is the absolute best server and saw to my every need!! She made sure our table was taken care of all night and made the best food/drink suggestions. Definitely recommend!!
LOVE THIS PLACE!! Tacos are phenomenal, especially the cheeseburger one. Their Thursdays a half apps and taps is also a family favorite. The Quesadilla and wings are a huge hit. Prices are reasonable, a little on the higher side, but you get what you pay for and it’s worth every cent. (Especially that summer sunset)
Rose was super attentive, kind, and so much fun. She really helped make the night so much better and she was accommodating and understanding with every request. I hope everyone who comes here gets her as a server.
Our server, Sam, was exceptional in every way! Fun, professional, knowledgeable, courteous and on top of everything. Food great, atmosphere fun, drinks strong. Ask to sit it Sam’s section!
Whale’s Tale is the best local spot around! The view is unmatched, the prices are great, food delicious, and drinks large. We LOVED our server Rose. She was filled with energy and happiness that exuded onto us as well. Thank you for always giving us a wonderful, fun, delicious summer experience!
WOW... why did it take me so long to try this place? Everything about it was great from start to finish. The atmosphere is so cool matched only by the food and service. The servers were attentive and made sure I was enjoying my experience. They were helpful in making suggestions since everything sounded so good. I mean how do you choose between street fries, fresh amazing looking quac, szechuan calamari and wings... and that was just the appetizer I was trying to decide on... the food is awesome and the experience amazing. It will be a regular place of mine to eat at moving forward. Do yourself a favor and go and not matter what you decide on the appetizer try one of the taco options.. you will be so happy you did.
My husband and I wanted to go for an MC ride somewhere new and decided to venture to the North Shore. What a treat...we landed at Whales Tale. From the moment we arrived at the restaurant, I knew that I'd like it. The hostess was very kind and sweet. Had us seated quickly and retrieved us from the bar. We then were set at a beautiful high top with an amazing view of the sunset on the water. At the bar, we ordered a Pomegranate Margarita and a Rocket Fuel to get us started. They were delicious. We brought our drinks to the table, where Alana introduced herself as our waitress. She is an asset to Whales Tale and I commend her for her level of care and service. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient, and above all, she went above and beyond to meet our needs. If you aren't aware riding on a Motorcycle, makes doggy bags complicated. Needed to have the plates wrapped in saran wrap so they don't break open and spill all over the saddle bags, and she made sure it got done. Her recommendations on the food were spot on. Oysters are beyond fresh and clean. Guac was good, it just needed a hint of lime to make it great (fortunately Alana made sure we got our lime, had to cut it herself), and the Bang Bang shrimp were yummy. Then the main course had a tostada salad with seared Tuna and I couldn't be happier. My boyfriend ordered the picnic pork, and pork belly taco. Let me just say I was stealing a bite whenever I could; And finally the bill. Very affordable and you definitely get your money's worth. So if you're looking for a spot with good drinks, amazing food, and a view. Head to Whales Tale, you will not be disappointed. Already planning a group for with friends to this amazing restaurant.
Pretty good food. Got the 12 taco platter for around $35 and it was delicious. I recommend the Maui taco. I went on a Thursday night and there was an hour wait for two people that ended up being only 30 minutes. The biggest problem I had was that there were misting machines all over the place that drenched the floors and the seating areas. Only around 8PM-ish did they decide to shut them off. It was annoying to eat when I was getting pretty wet from these things. The view is very nice overlooking the marina. I would go again on a date.
Really nice atmosphere being on the North Shore overlooking the marina. Food was very good and the staff was very nice. Definitely recommend.
Went here on the Sunday before Memorial day. They serve raw oysters and clams, but they were out. They also did not have a good selection of drinks. No prosecco, No champagne, only reds and whites if you are watching your calories. The tuna poke bowl was tasty, even with the sauces on the side. The mussels in red was also tasty. I didn't try the tacos. Portions were great size. Food was fresh and tasty.
Delicious food , great staff, pet friendly, and a nice outdoor seating. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the pricing. Some things just did not make sense, I appreciate them trying to keep prices reasonable, but for example, guacamole and chips was the same price as nachos with guacamole and chicken on it. Some things just didn't make too much sense. Overall I would highly recommend and would go back if I was around.
Nice decor and area. Definitely a good spot during the summer time. Went for their happy hour and was really impressed with the food and drinks. I would recommend the bang bang shrimp and filet tacos. It was really good. Happy hour is only at the bar and their bar is kind of small and situated weird. i kept having to move my chair in for people to pass just to get to the other side of the bar. Other than that it was a good time.
Have enjoyed a variety of menu items on a number of occasions. If you come at the wrong time your wait time will be a long one so be prepared. Small spot on the water but not the most water front ambiance you can get. Tacos are fairly large so 2-3 is plenty for one person. Only thing menu wise we have not enjoyed at all were the wings, not sure if it was an off night or just a preference in how they are done but they didn’t have that classic wing crunch, very soft skin that was almost slimy. Taking a star off for the cocktails/mixed drinks. For close to $15 a drink they are rather weak. Stick with a beer, you know what your getting.
Really enjoyed their food, and the selection of tacos and was large. I tried the Wahaka tuna taco, as well as the bang shrimp taco, and found them to be very tasty. The appetizer of guacamole with chips could have had a little more spice, but was still also quite nice. Sangria had a nice raspberry taste to it
There was a long wait, but it was the Saturday of Cow Harbor Weekend with gorgeous weather. Everyone was very apologetic and super nice about it. They were quite accommodating with our dog, which was also lovely. The food was, honestly, better than expected. Well flavored and fresh. One of our drinks was quite weak and, after requesting another, the waiter brought back a cup with just liquor so he could make it to taste. The only weird part was the fact that we were placed next to the ice machine which was in constant use. That was a bit distracting and loud.
The wait was a little bit long for the four of us, 45mins on a Tuesday but it was so worth it! The appetizer we got was a little bit small, the buffalo bites, but still very delicious. We went on Taco Tuesday, $2 tacos all day and it was a steal! The tacos were so delicious, especially the bang bang shrimp and the surf and turf tacos. I recommend this place if you like a fun atmosphere, good food, an excellent view of the Marina, and don't mind a little wait.
There's not much on the menu, and my food came out cold. Mainly tacos 🌮 which is not a bad thing if that's what you want. I was hoping for broiled or grilled fish. Most food is already seasoned. Drinks are very good, and so was the service. Beautiful view of the harbor. This is a place worth going to for some drinks and simple meals.
I always feel like I'm at a summer spot when I'm here. Situated by the water in a marina gives me somewhat of a Fire Island vibe. I usually order one or two of the tacos which, due to them being one of the least expensive items on the menu, one might anticipate them being tiny but they happen to be a lot more filling than you'd think! The burgers are good at well and the fries are delicious! Definitely a go to place if you're looking to eat (or have drinks) outside with that summery feel!
Had a great time with my mother & her friend, her food was cold so she didn’t like it. I liked mine and so did her friend. Our waitresses name is Leah and she was both nonchalant and funny which I really appreciate. She reassured my mother that she was okay for asking questions which I also appreciate.
Ambiance (5/5): It’s hard to beat the sunset views of the water. It can get extremely busy on even weekends so be prepared to call early or wait for 30min to 1hr. Service (4/5): Young staff members are hustling to give you the best service they can but it is extremely busy at times. They are always courteous! Dog friendly. Street Fries – usually their fries are great and cooked with a superior crunch and coated with a nice flavored. Other times, they can be a little soggy. Bang Bang Shrimp – skippable. I like the flavor but it is usually more batter than it is shrimp. Chicken BBQ Quesadilla – big fan. There’s a good portion of chicken. I might ask for the BBQ sauce on the side next time instead of drizzled on top (which is how it comes). Oysters - Questionable tasting freshness Tuna nachos - meh Tacos from best to worst – the tacos are sizable! Shells hold well too Kung pao cauliflower – surprisingly the best. thai chili sauce sticks well on the battered tempura Salmon poke – salsa and soy dressing worked well Spare rib //Korean steak – both remembered being good Hot chicken – pretty good Pork and plantain – pork belly was not too seasoned and way too much slaw portion (5:1 ratio) Surf & turf – steak was super chewy Tuna – quality of the tuna was chunky and was bleh Crispy fish taco – on both counts was the worst taco by far
Food was great someone of the Hidden Gem on the Gold Coast of Long Island. I would say the service was average at best it was very slow I can only imagine what it's like in the summertime when the marina is open. I 100% will be going back. This might be the best place for tacos on long Island.
The website attracted me to the restaurant even though it was an hour drive from me. The staff up front was very nice but the wait was awful. The bar stools at elevated tables are extremely uncomfortable. Those type of tables and stools predominated. Once seated at a comfortable table, our expensive strawberry daiquiris had no noticeable alcohol in them although the taste was refreshing. The tacos took forever to arrive but did taste good when they were brought to us. The salsa and cheese and Tostitos were a nice plus. They take no reservations and only take Visa and MasterCard rejecting my Discover card. Will we go back? No, for sure!
Appetizers were better than my dinner. I ordered a chicken taco and a surf & turf taco. Both tacos had way too much dry fried crispy onions in the taco than meat. There was barely any meat in them. I’ve had better tacos before. One can hope they start improving on the food quality, the portions, and the ratio of the ingredients. Unfortunately by the looks of these reviews and the dates they were posted, it’s safe to say not much will change.
Very rustic decor. Food was so-so. There are better places to eat near the water in Northport.
Great taco flavors but wasnt a fan of the tortilla, was almost stale? But they have great flavor combos. My favorites were the Korean Steak, the Raw Salmon (almost like a poke bowl taco) and the Spare Rib taco. Great views too
Been coming to whales tale forever, have always loved the food and atmosphere - a great local spot. However we had a weird experience tonight with the service / atmosphere. This place is known for its sunset and water view, but they had huge umbrellas blocking the entire view. I understand that it gets hot at certain times of day, and the umbrellas are great for that. However it was 7 pm and pretty brisk outside. We asked if they could take the umbrellas down for the sunset and the staff refused…we even saw other customers ask about the umbrellas and they said no to them as well. People come from all over the island for this view, and for it to be completely blocked is pretty ridiculous. Also when we left we said “have a good night” to the staff at the host stand and they didn’t even acknowledge us. I just expected better from this place. We’ll prob be back though because the tacos never miss
Pros: Good casual food and drinks, and really nice waitress. Amazing crispy fries and refreshing margs. Business seemed to be doing well as it was packed in there! Tacos seemed to be a popular order here. Cons: Was super hot inside where we sat. No AC or fan (at least nearby) with the sun blazing through the window. The high top table setup is unfortunately not practical for sitting or comfortable as there’s a shelf in the place you normally put your legs (see in image). Perhaps the shelf can be removed from the high tops? Nonetheless, our level of comfort overshadowed the meal for us. If we were to go again, we would probably eat out on the patio.
Very disappointed with Whales Tale. Over the last year or two it has completely changed (I think ownership). They ask you to take a picture of a QR code to pull up the menu as they aren't giving out regular or paper menus anymore. Due to covid, we understood this no problem. We take a few minutes, decide what we all want to eat, and order. Our waitress told us that menu is not correct and asked us to take a picture of a menu she pulled up on her phone. We could hardly read it and we had to share the phone amongst the 6 of us. They are not doing any party plates and the tacos are no longer $5 a piece. Some of them up to $6.50 for one taco with maybe 2 small pieces of meat. It's not worth it at all!! My mom ordered a burger well done and it was medium. The fish taco was very chewy and we sent it back. It was really embarrassing to hype up this place for my boyfriend who lives out of state as we left disappointed as the food just wasn't good. It cost over $100 for 6 people to eat lunch without alcohol being purchased there (during the wait for the table, we bought beer from Harbor Head across the street). Will not be returning and will not be recommending.
Very long wait to be seated. Very close to 1 1/2 hours. However, it was Taco Tuesday. Seated once, then told there was someone before us. Had to wait another 1/2 hour. Ordered and took almost another hour for our food to arrive. Prior to bringing the food we decided to take the tacos to go. The staff was cordial. The bartender very good. The tacos were also good. Maybe avoid Taco Tuesday. We will try a different day. We have been there before and it was very good. Staff always cordial.
The 2 stars because the food and drinks are amazing(worthy of 5 stars)0 stars for service. Here right now and I don’t we have an actual server just a guy running around taking orders. No follow up on table. We constantly have to ask the other actual servers for even basic things like plates cutlery etc. he just dropped the appetizer and left without even plates to eat in. Need other stuff but at this point feel bad to bother other servers so just gonna finish what’s on the table and leave. Nice place and good but terrible service.I think he may be the manger or someone coz clearly doesn’t look like he cares but in that case his service should be even better.
What happened to The Whale’s Tale?! This place used to be a staple in the community but the last few times I’ve been, it’s gone from bad to worse. We were seated and waited patiently for about 20 minutes while server after server passed us by without even a glance. Finally, a waitress came over and said “You still haven’t been served yet?” Needless to say, that did not make us feel welcome or excited to be there. After she took our order, it eventually came but it was clear our beers had been sitting waiting for pick up because they were warm. The food was okay…just okay. I understand times are tough and it’s hard to find experienced/enough staff but times are also tough for customers. This was our ONE date night in months because we have a 1 year old at home and it was super disappointing.
Went on a hot day. First bad decision. No fans outside sitting under a boiling hot tent, no indoor seating. Tacos we all got were just ok. Wings were good. 20 min wait when there were 5 large empty tables at the entrance. Ordered guacamole, never came out. Were told our kids tacos were taken by another server so they came out last. Just overall not a great experience.
Service was great I don’t want to put this review on them. Food was not good. Quac from the chips and Quac tasted like the store bought guacamole cups (but worse somehow) and the chips were rubber. I was sad for the tables around us ordering them because of how bad they were. I remembered the tacos used to be amazing maybe the best on the island. But today they were dry and in general just disappointing. Not sure if it was a different cook or something happened but I could not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
I don't know why I gave this place a 2nd chance. Walked up and was told to sit anywhere. We sat anywhere... for over 5 minutes without being brought a menu as the servers passed us multiple times. I finally went to go look for some menus and saw a stack. I asked if I could take 2 and she said no but she will bring them over to us. She did not. So we left because we knew we would have the same awful experience as the last time we came 5 years ago. I don't know how this place is still open. I gave it 2 stars so that my review is taken more seriously.
So....the good part is that the food was really good. Nice selection of different tacos and all were tasty. It's also a beautiful location, overlooking the marina and the inside of the restaurant is nicely done. The not so good part...I wish I knew if the wings were good or not but after ordering them 3 times and waiting and waiting, we finally gave up. They were the very first thing we ordered. After waiting awhile for food, the tacos and drinks came out so I reminded waitress of wings. After the tacos were almost done and we ordered our second round of drinks, we asked again. No wings ever showed up nor any reason given. If they ran out, fine, just let me know and we'll probably order something else. But we just got apologies for the wait and were assured they were coming but they never did. Then there was the second round of drinks....For some reason, for the second round of beers, my wife's came in a cup about 2/3 the size of her first cup. I kind of jokingly asked the waitress what was up with that and she just kind of made a face, said she didn't know, and that was that. From the no wings after asking three times to the baby beer, it'll probably be awhile before we go back.
Not what it once was. Menu not as fun, but tacos still there. My favorite Korean Taco has become inedible. Steak was cold, tough, and had no "Korean" sauce, ie some combination of soy sauce, sesame oil, and/or rice wine vinegar. Service is still great despite idiot management having staff in all black in the sun in July. After years of being a favorite spot of mine, I'll pass from now on until I hear about improvement.
I came to the Whale’s tale for lunch for the first time and it was ok. I ordered the “rocket fuel “ for a drink and it wasn’t that strong for a drink that had Bacardi 151. My guest and I ordered the taco tray. I got the fish tacos, shrimp, and one chicken. The fish taco was my least favorite. The fish was somewhat soggy? The chicken was good I believe because of the mango . The shrimp tacos were the best. The tacos I ordered had soooo much tomatoes on it I had to scrape them off just to find the rest of the ingredients. Not sure if the other location is better but I’m not sure I will go back but it’s worth a try if you like tacos 🤷🏽♀️
If there was a minus stars for service I’d put that down Sat at the bar on Wednesday 7/23/25 2 bartenders behind the bar Non serving or making drinks when we sat down Got ignored to the point where the one asked the people next to us if she can clear their tray , picked it up and walked past us not even eye contact she was missing for a few minutes returned only to chat at the register with the other who also ignored us. 10-12 minute go by and the other bartender came over and asked if we want anything. a minute latter the one who ignored us first came to ask if we need anything although we had nothing in front of us and she watch us sit when we walked in. We Put 2and 2together, we walked in 10 minutes shy of the end of happy hour. so I guess that’s a common tactic by sketchy bartenders to raise the tab and to delay so the drinks are full price not HH prices The 2 of them looked lost walking slow reacting slow and making drinks and pouring them down because they were no good Ordered our foot which was delicious The first drink was too sour I had to tell her how to make the second that took two tries even though I haven’t tasted it yet. I will never go back or recommend the bar to anyone I know I live on the east end and have nothing but exceptional service at their hampton bays location The bartenders always smiling, attentive and very professional the drinks are great and the food is delicious I will continue to go to the hampton bays location but as long as those two characters are still working in northport I’m telling my family and friends and coworkers in the area to avoid the bar. Again the food is excellent it’s the bartenders that caused this bad review
Service is always mediocre at best. Tacos are tasty when they get the order correct but the servers need to pay closer attend to allergy requests. Tonight I told my server I can’t do dairy and ordered my tacos without cheese on them and they were delivered with a white creamy sauce on top. Normally I would ask for new, but it was so busy in there and it already took us a very long time to place our taco order after our appetizer arrived. I pushed the top layer to the side and enjoyed the rest of the taco. Atmosphere is what you go to enjoy.
So here’s the thing: our bartender was great. The food was great. The ambiance was great. But a COVID surcharge? Charging extra money for no reason when you should be thankful that patrons are visiting your business? As much as I enjoyed the food and drinks, nonsense like this will absolutely keep me from visiting again and instead, I’ll enjoy better local establishments like Bistro 44 or Mill Pond House, which are only a short ride up the road.
Went here because of other reviews and the nice view. Overall experience was pretty terrible. The drinks were not strong. Mescal marg was unbalanced. Tacos were underwhelming. Tortillas were stale and came from a bag. My pork belly taco was overcooked and almost inedible. Overall underwhelming food. Save your money and go elsewhere.
Great people watching place. I hope you like doing that, because that's all you'll do. We sat for 15 minutes on the back deck, got passed by 6 different staffers and a manager of sorts. Not even "someone will be right with you." Tables around us were asked how things were, if anything was needed, etc. Nada. Perhaps I'll be back when I'm not hungry or thirsty. Menu and food looked affordable and delicious. Woulda been nice
Half way through our meal we finally got our drinks. I felt like I was inconveniencing our waitress, as she stood by the bar in her phone. Food sucked.
What the heck happened to this place? Haven’t been here in a year and it fell apart. It used to be amazing. First off the steps on the entrance are all cracked and splinting. Not good if you’re wearing flip flops. A few steps up there is a shrub growing through the lattices and hitting you and your children if they’re not being held. Someone decided to build a 4ft pvc fence that restricts you from seeing the water at all. This no longer feels like a restaurant on the water. Now onto the food. Chips and guacamole, and the street fries still were amazing. The menu has shrunk and no longer has the taco tray on it. The liquor menu has shrunk as well. The bartender is awful. We ordered 3 margaritas ( regular, skinny, jalapeño) and also one of their mixed drinks that was all ginger beer. They sucked! Bring back the chick with the tattoos. She was awesome! The tacos now are massive. The shells are huge and they are full of filling but the same amount of meat as the old ones. They’re toasted and bent which is just gross. The old tacos used to be great. Small tortilla not toasted and the right amount of fillings and meats. This place went from a 10/10 to a 2/10 only being saved by 2 appetizers. I will never go here again until it’s reverted back to the place it used to be, and I’m a resident. Taco spot on elwood blows this out of the water. Literally
Awful. Nachos were just some tortilla chips thrown on a plate and covered in cold, jarred queso, salsa and sour cream. Tacos were flavorless. Such a shame for a spot that is in such a great location.
First off, we’ve been coming here for awhile and have eaten there at least 6 times over the years, so to start off we’re pulling for you guys but honestly I’m leaving a review based off our last experience! To say it was awful is being kind! We were 4 people… 3 got the same dish, the street bowl with shrimp… shrimps smelled like urine… food was definitely not fresh at all! Drinks were horrible! The server was great not her fault at all! Not sure what’s going on with this restaurant but it could be a gold mine if run properly! The view is fantastic! No need to skimp and cut corners on food like this! John Taffer should pay you guys a visit! Sorry
Absolutely horrendous experience hands down worst experience I had at any restaurant. I can't decide if the service or the food was worse. My friends and I wanted to enjoy a nice dinner by the water on a warm summer's evening. This is an outdoor dining area and the atmosphere was so chaotic. The establishment did not even put fans around the area for air circulation for such a hot day nor to keep bugs away. There were lantern flies landing on people and the food and smooshed across the floors and numerous flies swarming the place and I should've taken that as a sign to leave and take our business elsewhere. The waitress was very rude and condescending towards our group. First off she was very unorganized and all over the place. Although our group was on the younger side ranging from older teens to early 20s we remained respectful towards service workers understanding that they might be having a rough day but did not understand why the waiter had such a bad attitude towards the group from the get-go. A member of the group asked a question about the food due to dietary preference and was met with a condescending quip from the waitress about how she never was asked such a question instead of being straight forward and answering the question of if the shrimp came deshelled and deveined as some seafood restaurants keep shells on the shrimp. The waitress also quipped when I asked about the drinks menu. When the waitress brought our half empty drinks to the table they were brought in broken cups with the drinks spilling out onto the tray and as the waitress handed them out they spilled onto the table and spilled onto clothes of the group members. Another much friendlier waitress had to help our waitress with getting drinks and food to our table. We did not get replacements for the broken drinks brought to our table, staff did not bring rags to help clean up the spills all over the tables floors and ourselves, nor did we get moved to another table. When I asked for a straw I was told they had all just been knocked over. At this point our group just wanted to quickly eat and leave the restaurant. Our food arrived cold it was bland and flavorless. To top off the whole ordeal a few bites into my food I had found a blonde hair in my food which was absolutely disgusting and I completely lost my appetite and could not eat after that. At this point I asked the host for the bill so that we can leave. I am usually a generous tipper but due to this whole ordeal I tipped 5% even though I should've tipped nothing. Tips are a generosity from the customer for good service and not something that anyone is entitled to. As we were leaving, the host/manager became aggravated seeing the tip on the bill and called the waitress over who shouted condescendingly after our group throughout the restaurant. The group was shocked at this type of behavior after already having such a terrible dinner where none of us were able to consume even a quarter of the meals we ordered. Mind you none of the members once spoke back to the host or waitress throughout the evening, not even as they shouted despicably after us as we were raised much better than that. They also up charged the bill amount so I had to dispute that with my bank. Just completely astounding how entitled and rude people can be and seeing this type of behavior from both the waitress and host/manager says a lot about such a low class establishment.
This is my first time at this restaurant. I’ve heard the suggestion come up many times through my 13 years of living in this town, tonight I made plans for my fiance and I to meet with some friends to kick off summer, why not down by the water! Whales Tale was the perfect place on the perfect day, but our experience was no where close to ideal… Too small of a table for our call ahead, we had to find our own chairs to sit our group entirely. 26 tacos for 8 people piled onto two trays that took 4 servers to identify which was which item… our appetizers were cold, and forget about a timely refill. Two entrees even came out 15 minutes before the rest of the tables food! Simple is better if you’re still planning to eat here, as far as mixed drinks they aren’t consistent either. The kitchen messed up most of our orders, who’s to blame is irrelevant besides the management. This place was swamped and clearly a staple, they did not set the staff up for success nor their customer experience. Neither myself nor my guests will return, this place is all about the hype and its location, not about service or the food. Best of luck!
