Great little diner. Lots of selection on the menu for all tastes. My first time visiting and I tried the Santa Maria Tri-tip sandwich. The roll was grilled very crispy with lots of meat. Great wait til the next time I'm in the area and try something else from the menu.
Very friendly staff, huge portions, good food. This would be my local go-to if I lived here. My wife got the chef salad and couldn't finish it, it was so big. But even more impressive is I couldn't finish the pot roast, no easy feat to fill me up. The price was way less than what I got for it.
Pappy's Restaurant is like stepping back in time. From the staff to the atmosphere and decor. This is a family place and a truckers home along the road. They play old country music that takes you back to childhood and there are a million photos of cowboys and Rodeos from days gone by. The tables and booths are all comfortable seating and the staff are helpful, polite, friendly and fast. The food is ALL fresh. The chopp all fresh veggies for sides, salads, and recipes themselves. Dressings are home made. Gravey + mashed potatoes, all homemade. And folks the gravey is to die for no matter what kind you get. The chicken fried steak is HOMEMADE like my mother used to make. They serve all the best breakfast, lunch, and dinners from home. Meatloaf, lasagna, roast beef, fish, tir-tip everything, steaks, and the list goes on and on. It's the best fresh, authentic, in your mother's and grandma's kitchen cookin'. Pappy's is like being wrapped up in sunshine on the best day of childhood 🌻. There's no place better in my book.
Guys on the CB radio said that this was the best place to eat and that they fed you well. But oh my word, the turkey dinner that came out was enough to feed three people. We usually split a dinner at truck stops because they always feed you well. But this was enough for three people not just two! And it was absolutely delicious! The dinner was $20 and it was enough to feed three! Highly recommend!
I love a good ol fashion diner and pappy's answered the call. Hearty menu, full portions, affordable prices. The chicken fried steak was great, good tenderness with solid gravy. The biscuit was ok, a little on the drier side. The vanilla shake was awesome, and it came the old school way with the cup of extra, always a good call.
I decided to try this restaurant because I was coming in for an event from out of town. Boy was I glad that I ordered from this place. Their food was great, portions were huge, and service was awesome. Friendly staff and very reasonable prices, what more can you ask for? I loved their Santa Maria Tri Tip Enchiladas and their Meat Loaf Dinners. Try it out and I think you'll like it.
I stopped by this restaurant on my way up to SLO and was very satisfied. My server was very friendly and attentive. The chicken fried steak was very good with a side of mashed potatoes and fries. You also get the choice of a soup or salad, so I asked if they could make me a Caesar which was very fresh and tasty (not pictured). I will definitely come back if I find myself in Santa Maria. This is a nice retro diner with very reasonably priced food and I would like to try some other dishes here in the future!
Stopped here to have some breakfast. I had my headphones on prepared for the louder than I care for music. The server asked me a couple of questions and seemed annoyed for repeating herself. I guess she got over it when she realized I could hear, I was just hard of hearing. The music was loud, but not as loud as most other restaurants. The server was nice, checking on me a reasonable number of times. The food was good. I ordered country fried steak, one of my usuals for breakfast. The steak was actual steak and not some factory cut dredged in batter. The eggs were cooked a little more than over medium, but I still had some runny yolk. Nothing special about the toast. I asked for extra butter, and I don't feel that's what I was given. I am confident that it was some form of margarine. It was pasty white, almost flavorless and left an oily after sensation. Condiments were on the table. I thought it was special having syrup in random bottles. I would visit this place again if I am in the area. If you are traveling and want good food and a bit of nostalgia, stop in. I should mention I didn't bother to look at the full menu as I was told breakfast was the only option, unless you wanted a burger or salad (I think).
I’ve passed by this place many times when I worked in the area about 25 years ago and never stopped in. Well, we’re up here for the rodeo and figured we give it a shot. Remember watching them old TV shows with truckers stopping in at the roadside coffee shop or diner? Well, this is it! Country music playing in the background, conversations all around, good coffee, quick service and seating, polite, dishes clanging, etc. but still comfortable! I ordered the breakfast burrito and it was awesome with a side of hash browns (guacamole extra on the side). The wife ordered two eggs with pancakes and a side if hash browns. DELICIOUS!!! Wife got a coffee and we both had waters. The overall bill was under $50 before tip. Great food, great service, and nice atmosphere for the experience. The food was so good that I even finished the food my wife couldn’t finish. We’ll definitely come back here the next time that we’re in town!
Im a female trucker that travels state to state trying out restaurants. Here at Pappy's the food was wonderful. I ate dinner last night. Chicken fried steak & mashed potatoes with squash & broccoli. Everything was tender and well seasoned. This morning I had sirloin steak & eggs with breakfast potatoes and a pancake. Coming to Santa Maria again I will definitely eat there each time.
Pappy makes my belly happy. We were so hungry after visiting Avila Beach. Saw the road sign off the 101 freeway and decided to give it a try. Large portion food. The restaurant was established in 1959. Alyssa our server was friendly and courteous. Lots of truckers and locals eat from the surrounding agriculture community. Food did not disappoint. Unlimited coffee. One free refill hot chocolate. Worth the stop.
If you're looking for a family style restaurant with large portions and good service, Pappy's is the place for you. I ordered the Santa Maria style tri-tip. It came with soup or salad and your choice of 2 sides. My son ordered the chicken mushroom fettuccine (chicken and mushrooms on the side). He had his with the veggie tortilla soup and he ate all of it, which was a win to get him to get his veggies. Great experience overall!
I had the Chili Verde burrito and momma had the breakfast special with eggs, pancakes and bacon 🥓 She really enjoyed her food and there was so much she could not finish it all. The burrito I had was very good and a generous size. We both had diet Coke and our waitress was friendly and attentive. Like everywhere else it was pretty pricey but I would recommend Pappy's.
This place is bomb, huge portions, friendly staff, it gives you that home away from home feeling, they have a little of everything from pot roast, to shrimp, to burritos, and they serve breakfast all day!!! Definitely must try if your in the area, they also have a wall of fame leading to the bathroom, with people like Gene Autry and Ronald Reagan. Come and eat here you won't be disappointed!!! 💜😍
This is a great place to eat! It's got the old country western feel and the waitresses are wonderful. The food was great. I ordered the philly cheese steak and added mushrooms and a side of fresh fruit and it was delicious 😋! My fiance ordered the tri tip with sauteed onions and mushrooms and he loved it. To top it off we had a few Coors light. They have local and domestic beers even mimosas! Semi and RV parking available also. Definitely a place for you to try. While you are there you can check out all the photos of famous people that have eaten there even Ronald Reagan!! Pretty awesome!
I came to this place for a light dinner and was pleasantly surprised. The California burger is very, very tasty — juicy, well-balanced in flavor, and cooked just right. I also tried the wings, which were just as good. I really liked that the spicy sauce is served separately, so you can adjust the heat level exactly the way you prefer. The onion rings were also well done — crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, just the way they should be. However, there are a few things I didn’t like: • The glass cups have chipped edges, and when you drink from them you could easily cut your lips — this is quite concerning and should definitely be addressed. • The waiter kept coming to the table very frequently (almost every 3 minutes), watching us while we were eating and repeatedly asking if we wanted anything else. I understand the intention might be good service or increasing sales, but it felt uncomfortable. • The prices are quite high. For one burger, one portion of wings, onion rings, and two beers, the total was around $70. Overall, the food is good, but the experience and value for money could definitely be improved. Also, regarding cleanliness, a bit more attention should be paid. There is definitely room for improvement in maintaining higher standards. Another thing — if the staff wants to eat a piece of cake or have a snack, that should be done in the kitchen or in their break area, not next to customers. It was quite unpleasant to have a waiter standing on my left side with a plate and a plastic fork, eating and chewing loudly. That was unprofessional and honestly uncomfortable to experience while dining. This would significantly improve the overall atmosphere and customer experience.
I haven't been to Pappy's in awhile but started here about 50 years ago. We ordered breakfast. The scrambled eggs were flat without much texture, no fluffy eggs, the pancake pale looking and thin not much flavor as the previous cooks used to make. Coffee was good, hash browns good. The short order cook needs to be retrained by a real chef... Make Pappy's Great Again!
If you’re looking for burgers and fries or bacon and eggs, the simple basics, then this is a good place. But for the love of god, stay away from the ribs. You won’t be able to chew the disappointment. I wasn’t even able to cut the bones apart with a steak knife. It’s my fault really. I should’ve known that you can’t trust a skill like cooking ribs to a short order grill cook. And believe me, I’m being kind with this review. But absolutely do stop here and eat. Basically a good meal. Just be reasonable with your expectations when you order. It is great as a short order cafe.
Went to pappy's was just so unhappy with our food it was huvevos rancheros and a egg sausage burrito but I order it the grande style suppose to have sauces all over burrito was expecting big portions got less then half portions as if he were eating at the restraint but because my family have been sick with flu so I thought I could order it to go I was on time the food was cold had no taste of Mexican foods I had ever tasted food was cold low portions and the money I spent was 43.00 and I gave a ten dollar tip I believe my total was 53.09 just totally dissatisfied with the food and it would surprise me if I told someone that if anyone really cares the price of food you would think restraints would be more on top of how there cooks and workers are doing but it just seems like no one cares about a family getting the worst meal or an order they didn't order eating out just says you are guaranteed food to eat that's eat and to the people that are preparing your meal they don't care how's it gets to you or anything IAM ready to say no more eating out in fact I think people should go on strike from eating at all restraints for one or two days that might smap them back in for being so greedy and more caring about how theY are and what they are preparing for paying customers
