Went for happy hour. The chicken tostadas were delicious! Great value!
Back Forty is an award-winning BBQ restaurant and a family favorite! There is a bar area with numerous large screen TVs where you can order food and/or drink without the full restaurant experience. The food is the draw. Meaty pork ribs are tender and delicious. There is a selection of side dishes with the entree. Our server was friendly and attentive. (We often purchase a bottle of Back Forty barbecue sauce to enjoy at home.)
We love to go to dinner every Monday. The food is so delicious, and the people are all excellent and friendly. Of course we have our favorite servers ( Trever and when he's not there Manny ). Pat is one of the managers and has a great personality.
We were pleasantly surprised at our recent visit to Back Forty Texas BBQ. The service was excellent and the food delicious. We went on a Monday night so crowds were minimal. We started with cocktails and they were made very well. Mannie was our server and he was both personable & efficient. We ordered the Early Bird special which has a variety of meats along with two sides. The Caesar salad was large enough to share as well as the cornbread & honey butter. I could not finish all of my meats so we took some home. The brisket was cooked perfectly and the chicken moist. All this and the bill was less than $100 before gratuity. It was a great value for what we got. We will be back!
Great food. Reasonable prices. Great customer service. Great atmosphere.
Been meaning to do a review about their BBQ and food. My sister always orders from this location for our family gatherings every single time however, we went to their restaurant and decided to eat there for the first time. As expected, the food was good. We ordered a full slab of pork ribs, half a bbq chicken , 2 pounds of beef brisket (with a little bit of fat) and 1 pound of hot link. I guess we ordered a bit too much but we almost ate everything. We also ordered some sides with our orders. Potato salad, Sweet potatoes fries,Scallop potatoes and beans. the scallop potatoes was very good and the sweet potatoes fries got mom’s thumbs up of approval. Mother also loved the beef brisket. She said, it literally melted in her mouth and the pork ribs. We didn’t even need a knife to cut the meat. That is how tender it was. We were so full that we didn’t try their desserts. We will definitely come back next time to try it.
Food is always good, the only thing is that they don't always have the baby back ribs. The service crew are great.
The ribs were fabulous. The sides were excellent as well. The baked potatoes were great. The owners are friendly. Great place. Not inexpensive but portions were large and I could have gotten two meals out of my order
First, shout out to Manny for being an awesome waiter. We had the 1/2 lbs Burger(Cooked Medium), Dinner mix plate(Pork Ribs, Beef Rib, Brisket) and the kids chicken tenders. All the smoked meats were tasty and easy to eat. The only downside of the mix plate is you only get 1 beef rib lol. The burger was cooked perfectly. My kids had a great time eating everything!!!
We are repeat customers, even for take out during the pandemic. This is the end of Bacon Week. A tribute to bacon with a bacon menu seperate from the main menu. So, I had the BLT and my wife has the Applewood smoked Bacon Flatbread. Everything is just as good as any of the main menu items...including the vanilla bacon milk shake 😆. I absolutely recommend Back Forty for lunch or dinner. Update: 2/24- Even with a party of 9 (6 more elder than I), our waiter Cameron did such a wonderful job, I had to mention him here.
After leaving a v important backpack behind from a visit. I called to inquire if it happened to be found. Jacqueline was so kind in her professional courtesy on the phone with me and addressing this nightmare. She didn’t locate it in their lost & found but she was so thorough in her hunting for it, and it was most appreciated.
Went for the first time with my family of four , the barbecue pork ribs were probably the fan favorite along with the barbecue chicken. The bean and coleslaw were okay , feel like the beans could use some more sugar. Brisket was slightly dry, but overall great flavors and very friendly staff.
What a totally fun night! Our group had a craving for some tasty BBQ and this was the place. I appreciated that it wasn't noisy so you could easily hear everyone at our big table. Our server was super personable, offered good suggestions. Always a fan of brisket, I went with the Chunk O' Beef brisket, the garlic mashed potatoes and a Ceasar salad. This brisket is thick cut and super moist and juicy. What a treat! Wished the portion was little bigger but it was delicious. They offered a decent selection of drinks, and prices were fair. Would certainly return again to try some of the other meats.
A wonderful dining experience. Our server was top notch. Attentive but not annoying. The food was delicious and generous. My prime rib was excellent. Just a very nice and memorable experience. I think our waiter's name was Manny or Manual. In any event, every thing was great, service food and atmosphere 👌

Searching for the best BBQ in Concord??? Look no further then Back Forty Texas Barbecue. I highly recommend the Ribs, the Pulled pork sandwich, and THE REUBEN!!! Affordable prices, great seating, and the waitresses are quick to take your order almost immediately with a genuine smile on their face.
We just had a gathering in the redwood room following my father in laws funeral. It was completely perfect. Javier, Kaylyn, and Sydney were our servers and could not have been more attentive. The whole experience could not have been better , especially given the occasion
10 Jan 26, zero wait to seating. I had pulled pork. Husband had 3 meat (pulled pork, pork ribs, beef brisket, beans, rings) and it was delicious! Tender, juicy and saused but not sloppy. You can taste the seasoning, smoking and sauce. Friendly staff, terrific atmosphere, easy conversation, good lighting. Clean restroom. ~$65 before tip. I recommend! Will not wait so long to go again!
Back Forty BBQ in Pleasant Hill is our go to spot for get togethers and celebrations, and it never disappoints. The food is always excellent, from tender ribs to smoky tri tip and hearty sides that are consistently delicious. You can tell they take pride in every dish. The staff is friendly and attentive, which makes it easy to relax and enjoy your time whether it is a family dinner or a bigger gathering. The rustic roadhouse vibe adds to the charm, and during the holidays the place is all dolled up for Christmas, making it even more festive and inviting. If you are looking for authentic BBQ, warm service, and a place that feels just right for celebrating with friends and family, Back Forty BBQ Pleasant Hill is it.
I was working in the area and stopped buy for carry out, Orderd the tri-tip sandwich and made it a cheesesteak, I picked the Texas fries which is more like giant potato wedges very filling with perfect seasoning. Next time I'm in the area I will definitely stop here dine-in for a different experience. Carryout was very simple and straightforward, lady at the front was extremely helpful with great energy.
Back Forty Texas BBQ Roadhouse & Saloon – Classic Texas-Style BBQ in Pleasant Hill Back Forty Texas BBQ is a well-known family restaurant in Pleasant Hill, celebrated for its hearty Texas-style barbecue. I visited on a Saturday at noon, and while it wasn’t too busy, I noticed they also have private rooms perfect for large family gatherings or birthday celebrations—a warm touch that makes the place feel welcoming. The restaurant has an old-school Texas charm, with rustic wood tables, a round bar setup, and plenty of Texas-inspired decorations like stickers and vintage-style details. The garden with flowers and greenery outside adds to the atmosphere, evoking the look and feel of a classic Texas roadhouse. For appetizers, we ordered the Texas Wings, and the staff kindly let us have sauces on the side. We sampled the original mild BBQ, kickin’ honey garlic, and buffalo sauces, all of which paired well with the wings. The wings themselves were crispy outside and tender inside, with carrots and celery served alongside. For the main course, we went with The Grand Pit combo, which includes three smoked meats and two signature sides. The pulled pork was flavorful, especially the fully pulled portions, though the cubed pieces were a bit tougher. The beef brisket can be ordered lean or juicy; we tried the lean, which had less fat but also less moisture—I’d recommend going for the juicy cut for more tenderness. The pork ribs were generous in size but slightly hard to pull off the bone, so perhaps a little more cooking time would make them perfect. As for sides, the seasonal veggies were a light mix of broccoli, cucumber, and zucchini, though the portion was small. The chef’s special tortilla soup was excellent, with tortillas, chicken, onion, and corn coming together in a flavorful broth—one of the highlights of the meal. The portions were large enough that two meat lovers couldn’t quite finish everything, so we happily took some to-go. Given the combo deals, the pricing felt reasonable. There’s also plenty of parking available and the restaurant is ADA-accessible, making it convenient for all visitors. Overall, Back Forty Texas BBQ delivers well-prepared meats, warm Texas décor, and a family-friendly atmosphere. It’s a great spot for BBQ fans, whether you’re stopping in for wings and a drink at the bar or enjoying a full meal with family and friends. --- ✨ Highlights: 🍗 Crispy, tender wings with multiple sauce options 🥩 Hearty BBQ meats—pulled pork, brisket, ribs 🍲 Delicious tortilla soup 🎉 Private rooms for family gatherings 🚗 Easy parking and ADA-friendly
We had an incredible experience here! We ordered the 1lb beef brisket, and it was absolutely perfect — soft, tender, and packed with flavor. It practically melted in my mouth, with just the right amount of char on the outside for that satisfying crunch, while still staying juicy inside. On the side, we tried the corn and BBQ chicken salad, both fresh and delicious, and wrapped it all up with the peach cobbler, which was the perfect sweet ending to the meal. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, the service was friendly and fast, and overall everything came together for a great dining experience. I’ll definitely be recommending this spot to friends and family, and I can’t wait to come back!
Deanna was my server. She is a 100% pro. I asked what was best between the turkey burger, catfish, pulled chicken sandwich or smoked turkey sandwich. Deanna recommended I go with the turkey burger, which I did. So happy with the decision and her guidance. I also had to choose a side. I asked how the cornbread was and if it was moist (in my experience most cornbread is awful) and Deanna vouched for it and said it comes with honey butter. I ordered the cornbread. The burger came out hot and tasty. The cornbread was generously portions and moist and flavorful. This place knows what they're doing. You need to come here. Will be back and plan to entertain clients here for lunches/dinners im the coming months in my new job.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Back Forty Texas BBQ is hands-down a 10/10 across the board! The food? Absolutely incredible — tender, flavorful, and plenty of it. Everyone raved about the BBQ, and they even packed up the leftovers perfectly for us to enjoy again. Communication was clear and easy, they showed up right on time, and the whole setup was smooth and professional. Having BBQ on-site was a total hit — such a refreshing change from the usual taco bars. It was the perfect choice and I’d absolutely use them again. Highly recommend if you want great food, great service, and a real crowd-pleaser!
The food was amazing here. Everything was cooked to perfection. The steak was delicious, and the scallop potatoes were heavenly, hands down, the best scallop potatoes I've ever tasted. The staff was great they were very attentive and so pleasant. Did I mention the corn bread? It was also delicious. Fresh and moist with a yummy honey butter on the side. I'm looking forward to going back here again!
Took the family here after they help me move into my new place. Went in around 1. No line no wait. Place was half full. I guess we missed the lunch time rush. Cornbread in the basket of bread was filling. Tried to stay away so I can eat the food I ordered. The ribs fell off the bone as soon as you bit into it. The tri-tip was like butter. No chewing was needed to enjoy such a delicious cut of meat. The Apple crisp was crazy good. I’d go back just for that. Wait staff was semi attentive. She forgot our banana pudding to go. But made up for it by giving us a little extra. 5 stars all around, will definitely come back seeing as this is so close to home.

We shared the sampler platter and the food was very good. Everyone has their own preferences for the perfect barbecue and i thought the ribs were the best on the sampler. Thought the strips of brisket were good, but not great. My spouse liked the sausage. Overall I liked it. Tge service was excellent!
A friend took me for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Ok, the Brisket was unbelievably delicious. The side dishes were very tasty and the service was top notch. It's a bit more expensive then the average meal but the food and service justified the fee for me.
I was dog sitting for my son. I needed dinner and this place was close by. So I dropped in to order something to go. Once inside, I half expected John Dutton to walk past me. The order was quickly filled. I had the brisket- which was moist and tender. There's a good sized bar. There were several large screen TV's situated for easy viewing no matter where you sat. People were in there eating while watching sports. If I lived there; I'd be in the place often.
Brisket was outstanding sausage was delicious ribs very tasty wish there was a little more meat on them but they were good. Customer service was outstanding the desserts were sweet and tasty, side dishes we're enjoyable except for the potato salad and I already talked to the management about that. Cornbread that was outstanding next will order extra butter the coleslaw was outstanding the scalloped potatoes and garlic mashed potatoes wonderful I forgot to grab some macaroni and cheese but I will take care of that sometime this week. Courtney the manager is marvelous!
It's been awhile since I've been to Back 40.... Their menu now offers only a limited choice off "full meals" (meat, sides, and dessert). Most of the food items are offered a la carte. Meat, sides, etc are billed separate, which really adds up $$. Our bill for 4 adults (no alcohol, no dessert) was $131. My ribs were good, no complaints.
We went during the last 30 minutes of lunch. Which worked out great because they have an amazing lunch menu where you can select a few different items for a reduced price. I believe it’s called The Texas Combination. I got the Pork Ribs, Beef ribs, Mac and cheese and Au Gratin potatoes. Pork ribs were the star for sure. Didn’t care for the beef ribs. Mac and cheese was a bit cold and underwhelming. Au gratin potatoes were okay. My wife had the Baked Potato. It was great! Service was on point. Very attentive. We loved the look. The bar was already very busy when we got there at 4:00pm. Will absolutely be going back to try again. I can’t express how busy this place is everyday. That’s why we had to go. Very popular and will return.
There's a lot to try on the menu. We ate in and also placed a separate order to go. You can get briskets 'dryer' or tender (marbled), and we opted for the second option for the take out order. Some menu items are more flavorful than others. Baked beans have a pleasant smoky flavor, but less taste than expected. Mac & cheese has a lot of flavor from the cheese, by contrast. My Texas bandit burger felt a bit bland, but easy to remedy with provided condiments. The temperature of all food served was perfect, as was the service. I will try this again and order different items to sample in the future. The atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant with nice furnishings, decor and lighting on the inside. It's easy to have quiet conversations without straining to hear or be heard. We didn't try the patio due to the heat, but it looks rather pleasant with a large tree in the center. Good food to serve a variety of tastes, very pleasant atmosphere and great service, excellent for couples or groups.
Everything was great. It's like Black Angus Plus. The quality of food, service, and atmosphere is like Black Angus only better. For those who miss the Black Angus across the freeway from here, it's a very good alternative. I got the juicy brisket and my wife got the cowboy steak. Both were very good.
This is a very nice restaurant. It's been years since we were there last. The food was good, decent portions, and came relatively quickly. I had the 3 meat platter: juicy brisket, pulled pork, and 4 pork ribs. The pulled pork was pretty good, but some of the fat wasn't removed. The ribs were meatier than I am use to when going out (a very good thing!) and there weren't "burned to a crisp". The brisket was juicy and very good tasting. I had the beans and Onion Rings as my sides. Only 4 stars for the food was due to the meats being a little bland; well smoked, decent seasoning, but missing something. The beans were "OK", but like the meat, missing something. Onion rings were wonderful with a light seasoning (again only slight flavor addition) but large and the onion didn't pull through the outer coating. They do not "Barbeque" really. They are really a "smoke house" (there is a difference) that only serves the "sauce" on the side for these 3 meats I had. I do not know about the "chicken". They are VERY good for what they do, I was just looking for something else I guess.
It’s a great hangout spot with a classic Texas BBQ menu. I tried the BBQ chicken and lean brisket—both were pretty good, though they were served a bit cold. The sides were decent; I especially loved the banana pudding and BBQ beans. The portions are definitely larger than what you’d get in California. The place itself is amazing—beautifully decorated with excellent service.
Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: Casual Value: Good Based on all the reviews, seems like it’s hit or miss but I had a good experience. We ordered the dinner sized plates of beef ribs, pork ribs (award winning), tortilla soup, Caesar salad, and mac and cheese. This was enough to feed 5 of us. I thought the pork ribs were flavorful, juicy, tender and could see how they could win an award. We all agreed these were better than the beef ribs. Beef ribs were still juicy but I can see how some people could have a “dry experience”. The tortilla soup missed the mark and so did the Mac and cheese. I like my Mac and cheese more al dente with some kind of breading, but the Mac and cheese here was pretty soggy and lacked flavor. The service was solid where multiple staff members checked on us to ensure we were having a good experience. We could’ve had a bit more attentiveness from our waitress for refills, but understand they were busy. Portion sizes were good, especially the pork ribs. I’d come back again to satisfy my Texas bbq cravings, but it didn’t have enough of the wow factor to get the full five stars from me.
Back Forty Texas BBQ I am all about the whole experience when going to a restaurant. I ordered To-Go. When I went to pick up the order, I was welcomed and greeted with a smile. In both instances, the host checked my order, read it back to me, handed me the bag, and followed with a farewell. To write this seems absurd, but customer service is not always commonplace these days. The food was good as well! This is what I ordered the first and second time I visited: 2 Meat Combo Lunch Plate: ☆The meat could use a bit more smoke flavor, but overall good. Sliced beef: The meat was tender. Could have used more seasoning or maybe seasoned overnight before smoking. Ribs: The meat was tender and flavorful. For those who like to eat the meat off the bone, it allowed for that without a lot of pulling. BBQ sauce was added as a nice compliment. Macaroni n cheese: Creamy cheese and pasta cooked to the perfect consistency. Potato salad: Mustard based with a nice blend of peppers, relish, and potato. Ranch roll (similar to yeast roll): Fresh with a soft texture. 3 Meat Combo Dinner Plate: ☆The meat could use a bit more smoke flavor, but overall good. Chicken: The meat was well-seasoned and did NOT require BBQ sauce. Double Ribs: The meat was tender and flavorful. For those who like to eat the meat off the bone, it allowed for that without a lot of pulling. BBQ sauce was added as a nice compliment. House salad: The salad was fresh; exactly what you would expect. Potato salad: Mustard based with a nice blend of peppers, relish, and potato. Cornbread: Perfectly cooked. I was hoping it would have been a little sweeter, but most people are looking for cornbread, not cake. Banana pudding (half-pint): Great flavor. Contained small bits of banana. If you are someone who enjoys layers of cookies, you might want to get a box on the way home. There was only one cookie placed on top as garnish. I am a banana pudding snob, and this one was actually decent! I will be back!
Came here for Father's day. Didn't have a reservation, so we waited for a hour to be seated. Website is confusing, we thought reservation weren't possible. You need to call ahead. Front desk and entire staff are very nice and friendly! We did have to wait a while for dinner, several large parties before us. Brisket is very tender, beef ribs are good, as are the hot links. Cole slaw is good, you need to mix bbq sauce with the beans. Overall nice place for BBQ.
I am not sure what happened with this local favorite but the cowboy steak that I ordered recently was about 50% fat which was of course inedible. I appreciate that the serve4 offered to send me home …

I don't know what it was, but the food was lacking in real bbq flavor. I felt like I should have smelled it in the air too. They were so nice, helping us by suggesting their favorites. We tried the prime rib, brisket, ribs and sausage. The waitress was amazing, so was the host. The place was beautiful and full of country style.
I ate ribs, clam chowder, fries and an sweet ice tea on late Friday evening Nov 15th. I had traveled 1.5 hours to try this place out. I was a little disappointed in the flavor and tenderness of the ribs. They looked good but I've had way better ribs at other eateries. The chowder was very good and the tea was cold. I will not be going back. The other thing that was crazy was this cost me $41.00. Ouch. Value to overall flavor is only 2 stars.
unfortunately they changed the menu drastically. gone are long ranger and other specials. our favorite prime rib sandwich is gone too so probably won’t be going back anymore. service was still good but even our server was shocked of the menu changes.
They've changed the menu. After all these years. They raised the prices. We won't be going back. I ordered the cowboy steak and it was terrible. Their new style. French fries on the other hand were really good. The buns were doughy and horrible. It was adequate at best. We've been going for almost 30 years but, again, we won't be going back. It was $170 for four of us and we didn't drink alcohol.
Back Forty Texas BBQ-We had the early bird special, which included brisket, pork ribs and chicken. Meat was a little dry, but the BBQ sauce was delicious and made up for the dryness. When I say dry, I was not getting a lot of flavor from the brisket without the BBQ sauce. The ribs, also very dry, came off the ribs easily and again the BBQ dipping sauce made the difference. Sides were generous. The difference maker was Julianna, our server. She was attentive, but not intrusive and always smiling. Great service! The early bird special was decent value, but had I gotten one of the other plates and paid more I'd be disappointed. Will definitely go back, could be it was a Monday-I've known Back Forty to be much better.
Inconsistent. So I have been here 3 times. The 1 st time was really bad. Cold food, Cold ribs and Flavorless. The 2nd time (earlier this year in may), Amazing. Delicous hot and very tasty. The 3rd time (a week ago) it was bland flavorless ribs. I was so looking forward to our meal but was quite dissapointed. Especially since i paid $55. Not sure if ill go back. The sides and service we very good. The cheese curds are amazing. The free bread and fried pickles really good. But we dont go to a bbq restaurant for the apps (generally). I needed the various main meals to be really good. And it was not unfortunatly. And they no longer have the pork sausages.. oh man that was what i was most looking forward to eating 😬
I had the one meat and 2 sides. Mash potato's were cold. I mean cold to touch and colder inside. Bbq chicken was cold. Corn bread was hot and tasty . Great beer selection!
The staff was great. They were very attentive and friendly. We were disappointed in the food. The wings were very good. The brisket and spare ribs were very dry. The turkey was okay, and the chicken was good. Mac n cheese, I would not recommend it. Potato salad was extremely vinegary, but the baked beans were OK. The prime rib was cooked nicely but was a little tough.
B+. 3.5 stars. Because the beef rib was the one I was looking fwd to, I can't give food a 4 star since my beef rib bone was dry and missing something..this was my 3rd attempt. 1st visit I tried a full order, 2nd tried a half, this time I got the combo and the one beef rib was again, dry and lacking something so it's a no. Cornbread was a hit, smoked beef sausage was good, sweet potato fries was good, salad tasted like its been in the refrigerator too long. My folks, did enjoy their orders however: Grilled Salmon, Beef ribs, baked potato, salad&vegi soup. Complimentary bread was nice and warm. Total of $105 without tip. Our server Courtney was the best! Attentive, personable and just makes you want to give the place another shot. I couldn't disappoint her and tell her my order was a bit disappointing, but I know now what not to get. We'll be back. Oh the ambience is just beautiful..and quiet, even though there's a bar on the other end. It's like passing through the Caldecott tunnel. Different atmosphere.
Pretty busy. Everything is smokey flavored - great if you like bbq, not great if you don't care for smoke taste. Large portions.
Great margaritas! Food was meh. I wish their brisket was more tender. Their service and ambiance is good.
Decent bbq fare the sauces are good, the chicken I had was tough from being overcooked. The Caesar salad was OK. The ribs my husband had were tasty and tender. His meal arrived well before mine.
Food was not good this time. Ordered the Chicken Breast and soup and salad. Chicken breast was rubbery and appeared to be reheated with very little flavor. Vegetable soup was not very flavorful, tasted like tomatoes juice with some vegetables thrown in. Salad was fine. I wonder if their food quality has been going down?
The latest changes to the menu leave me thinking that I probably won’t return. I’ve been a customer since they had a location off of Alcosta Blvd in San Ramon, which is hard to live up to as it was fantastic! The 2 best items this location has are now “premium” items. Free bread is no longer small white and brown loaves and cornbread, but rather boring rolls that taste like dry slider buns. Cornbread is now a charged item, $5 for a basket. Not a bad price, but a bummer since it used to be free. Also, the scalloped potatoes used to be on the Fixin’s list but are now $9. Really??? No thank you, I don’t think that’s a fair price for potatoes and onions. Another lacking point is the teeny glasses they are using for drinks. All it does is make the servers walk more and customers have to wait more often for refills. How much are they really saving? Pennies.
Food not very impressed. Mac cheese not that good like 4/10. Beans 5/10. Beef rib with bbq sauce 6.5/10 without bbq 5/10 also under seasoned IMO...brisket inside parts dry and lack flavor outer parts more moist and juicy still lack flavor 5/10. Wanted to luv it as it as we were headed to different place and drove by and seen this spot look bomb.
Ordered the half slab of pork ribs with shoestring fries, mac and cheese, and cornbread. The ribs were good but that was the only edible part of the meal. The mac and cheese was overcooked with a thin sauce that lacked seasoning. The shoestring fries are actually just regular fries. They were soggy and had so much salt they were barely edible. Worst of all was the cornbread which was completely burnt. I'd choose another spot for your BBQ.
I really want to like it but there’s a few problems. Unfortunately the food is riddled with bacteria. The meat was served cold. Brisket could use more seasoning/ rub on it. Service was a little rude. Desserts were generous portions but the meat portions average. Sad to say I probably won’t be coming back, and the quest for good Texas BBQ continues.
$90 for lunch for two was unexpected and no value. It's very uncomfortable watching my elderly guest attempting to navigate a minefield of charges when ordering lunch, only to be nickeled and dimed for this or that, cornbread, a loaded potato-- what we were accustomed to be part of the meal previously. The menu has changed for the worse, and my guest pointed out what kind of bbq place sells ribs by the # of bones? We had to send back the $11 loaded baked potato because it was cold. Never had any issues with service here, and the servers have been very nice, accommodating, and even entertaining, but inflation is getting the better of Back 40.

We were really looking forward to our meal last night. I made a reservation ahead of time and we when arrived, we were told we would have a 10 min wait. Ok. We sat down and waited awhile for our waiter to come. He comes by, friendly guy. Tells us he’s the bartender but they had him working service and bar. We order our food and we don’t see him again until the end. The food takes along time to come. When it comes, they forgot my soup and messed up our order. We had to wave someone down. I ask for spicy BBQ sauce. It doesn’t come. I ask again, second time. It doesn’t come. I finally make eye contact with another waiter walking by who then asks us if everything is ok. No. It’s not. Third time asking for my BBQ sauce and missing soup. I’m 2/3 finished with my meal before the REGULAR bbq sauce and soup comes. Food wise, our food came out lukewarm warm. You can tell it’s been sitting for a bit. This isn’t the first time we have had issues. Last time we were there they messed up our meal too. But this last experience takes the cake.
The service and atmosphere was good, but the food left much to be desired. The sliced brisket was extremely dry. The bbq pork ribs were not tender a bit tough, the Bbq bake beans taste like pork n beans from a can. Very disappointing.
The prices have increased dramatically,.so now there is no value. I ordered a meal for two and it was 80 bucks pictured below. Update: Not sure why, but unable to post a pic. Nevertheless, I have been a customer here since it was located in Poets Corner on the other side of the freeway, but i cannot see myself visiting anymore with this pricing. They wanted 9.00 for a baked potato, the same one at Wendy's is 1.99, and it will have chilli on it.
I got an 8oz prime rib medium rare for just under 29$. It was served lukewarm. It was very tough and bland. Hardly seasoned at all. Really disappointed in the food quality. It could be half off and I’d still go somewhere else.
I know I'm bias cause I'm from Memphis and this was my first and last time. I had to ask for dressing for my salad; chicken, ribs, and brisket was dry like it was cooked yesterday and cold and and they served me this. I've had Texas BBQ before and this is no where close.
Deserves NO star. Food is overpriced; the steak was ordered med rare and it was well done, it came in a puddle of brown gravy. I guess that was to make up for the lack of taste it had? Didn't bother to eat it after the first bite. The steamed veggies was extremely hard, it was like they took it out the package and threw it on a plate as soon as it was warmed. The old fashioned was muddled. When this was bought to the manager "Julie Arndt" attention she was rude AF, most definitely won't return. This place was definitely a waste of money. Save your cash and time, don't bother
This place is not cheap to eat at, so the food should be delicious. To the contrary: The wait person asked if I wanted the brisket 'lean or juicy'. I said "juicy", but the brisket was not only dry, it was cold, gnarly and above all bland. Not seasoned with any flavor at all. Not even salted properly. Lucky I didn't ask for "lean". The BBQ beans were smeary and had the distinct flavor of steam table water. I added BBQ sauce and still couldn't get rid of the acrid flavor. Not fresh, not handled properly. Felt risky to eat this dish. The cornbread looked good, but in keeping with the flavor theme of the meal, was bland and dryish. Shouldn't be called a "Texas backyard barbecue". More like Texas hospital food with a hospital bill at the end.
The staff was friendly and there was no wait time. Unfortunately, for the price we paid for two people, the food did not meet expectations. While we were in the middle of ordering, our server walked away mid-sentence, which was surprising and unprofessional. The brisket was dry and cold. My salad was brown and wilted, and although I ordered a chicken breast, I was given a wing instead. The “hot link” was essentially a hot dog. The scalloped potatoes were horrible. For the amount of money we spent, the overall quality was disappointing. What was most frustrating happened at payment. The server tapped my card for me, selected a 20% tip without asking, handed the machine back, and told me to sign while standing over my shoulder. I want to be clear: I am typically an over-tipper. I used to work as a server and understand how important gratuities are. Even if the food is not great, I usually tip 25% or more. However, having the tip preselected without my consent was inappropriate and left me uncomfortable. At that point, I just wanted to leave. This was not my first time dining here, which makes the experience even more disappointing.
Unfortunately, this was not as good as anticipated. Food was raw when instructed otherwise. Blue cheese was given instead of ranch, chicken was dry and overcooked while the burger was still mooing. Management tried to fix it by reminding me the item would be free. I was not there for a free meal; I am assuming they think I needed a free meal. My suggestion is for you to hire people who are able to read and follow directions. But then again, at the end of the day, it is BBQ.
Where should I begin? Well for starters, me and my husband was looking for some good ol bbq, we should've kept looking, because what we found here was a complete disappointment! The food was bland, slightly cold, and over priced to say the least. We have eaten bbq all over the Bay Area and even went to Texas (I did) I've never had bbq like this, and I pray to the good Lord we never experience food like this again! I would never recommend this restaurant to any of our friends or family or to anyone looking for some good food! It's not worth it! And that brownie was supposed to be for two!! Just terrible!
Me and my husband was looking for some really good bbq, heard about this place so we came in to try it. What a huge disappointment!!! The food wasn't good at all, the portions were small, almost like it came from the kids menu. Slightly cold and completely flavorless! The only thing was good was the rolls they bring out before your food. We were shocked and disappointed. And what we paid was outrageous! I could go on on , but what's the point. We will never suggest this restaurant to any of our friends or family. Nor will we ever return. This place was not it at all!!
